Abstract:Microcavity structures are widely utilized as resonators in many optoelectronic devices to improve their optical performance. We present an analytic approach to study the angle-dependent properties in active microcavities with dielectric Bragg reflectors. Based on the hard mirror (HM) model and paraxial propagation approximation, the angle dependent resonance properties can be expressed analytically in virtue of the cavity parameters and incident angle. Making use of these expressions, we found both the position of the active layer and the configuration of dielectric Bragg mirrors contribute to the angular characteristics of resonance in the active microcavity. The varying trend of the standing wave effect, intracavity electrical field and the degradation of quantum efficiency due to different incident angle are discussed in detail. It's found that there exists an optimal cavity configuration where the enhanced intracavity resonance can keep high value within a broader incidence range. Then further performance optimization of the whole devices can be performed.

Abstract:We study the resonant wavelength of nanograting structures covered by a dielectric medium. We find that the resonant wavelength oscillates as the thickness of the thin dielectric layer increases due to the cavity formed by the dielectric layer. The amplitude of this oscillation in the resonant wavelength is small when the minimum reflection occurs in the nanograting structure. For a plasmonic sensor covered by a dielectric medium, a small oscillation in the resonant wavelength as the thickness of the dielectric medium changes is preferred. We also study the impact of a rounded corner on the resonant wavelength and find that the rounded corners with a small radius of r effectively reduce the nanogroove depth by about 0.2 r . Results from the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method agree very well with the phase-matching condition, using parameters calculated from the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) method. These results will lead to a better understanding of the accuracy of plasmonic sensors covered by dielectric media.
Subwavelength-Confined Hybrid Surface Modes of Low Attenuation in Cylindrical Metallic-Dielectric Waveguides

Abstract:Subwavelength-confined hybrid surface modes of low attenuation were found in a cylindrical waveguide with a high-permittivity-dielectric nanocore nested in a metallic nanotube. When phase-matching conditions are met, mode transfer occurs, which is associated with a strong anti-crossing behavior. At the transfer radius, a hybrid mode with superior properties, namely low propagation attenuation and high light confinement, transforms into the other that has inferior properties. Thus, the superior mode with subwavelength confinement can be efficiently excited through this mode-transfer process when we taper the nested nanocore. This nanoscale cylindrical metallic-dielectric waveguide may have applications in high-density integrated photonic circuits, plasmonic sources, and biosensing techniques. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Abstract:We investigate the mode characteristic of bilayer spherical dielectric cavities embedded in ZIMs and find the resonance and mode degeneracy effect. Superior to monolayer cavities, the electric field distribution and mode degeneracy of bilayer cavities can be manipulated by changing the geometrical sizes.

Abstract:To meet the urgent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for the electronic products, microwave absorbers with a lattice of the dielectric cylinder were investigated. The elements of the lattice have a cylindrical shape and are composites of epoxy resin filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-EP). The relative complex permittivity of the MWCNT-EP was obtained from the S-parameters measured by the transmission-reflection method with X-band waveguide. The numerical simulation results show that the reflection coefficient of the uniform lattice of the dielectric cylinder is less than −10 dB in the entire X-band (8 GHz–12 GHz) and the reflection coefficient of the hybrid lattice of the dielectric cylinder (HLDC) is less than −15 dB in the same band. Moreover, the reflection coefficient of HLDC is less than −20 dB at normal incidence in the frequency range of 8.4 GHz–11.3 GHz. Further investigation demonstrates that the proposed HLDC could maintain good absorption performance under different incident angles and polarizations. This study suggests that HLDC with the characteristics of lightweight, excellent absorption performance, good angle, and polarization stability provide a promising prospect in the EMC field.

Abstract:In this paper,optical properties of two-dimensional periodic annular slot cavity arrays in hexagonal close-packing on a silica substrate are theoretically characterized by finite difference time domain（FDTD） simulation method.By simulating reflectance spectra,electric field distribution,and charge distribution,we confirm that multiple cylindrical surface plasmon resonances can be excited in annular inclined slot cavities by linearly polarized light,in which the four reflectance dips are attributed to Fabry–Perot cavity resonances in the coaxial cavity.A coaxial waveguide mode TE11 will exist in these annular cavities,and the wavelengths of these reflectance dips are effectively tailored by changing the geometrical pattern of slot cavity and the dielectric materials filled in the cavities.These resonant wavelengths are localized in annular cavities with large electric field enhancement and dissipate gradually due to metal loss.The formation of an absorption peak can be explained from the aspect of phase matching conditions.We observed that the proposed structure can be tuned over the broad spectral range of 600–4000 nm by changing the outer and inner radii of the annular gaps,gap surface topography.Meanwhile,different lengths of the cavity may cause the shift of resonance dips.Also,we study the field enhancement at different vertical locations of the slit.In addition,dielectric materials filling in the annular gaps will result in a shift of the resonance wavelengths,which make the annular cavities good candidates for refractive index sensors.The refractive index sensitivity of annular cavities can also be tuned by the geometry size and the media around the cavity.Annular cavities with novel applications can be implied as surface enhanced Raman spectra substrates,refractive index sensors,nano-lasers,and optical trappers.

Abstract:We experimentally realized an optical nanofiber-based cavity by combining a 1-D photonic crystal and Bragg grating structures. The cavity morphology comprises a periodic, triplex air-cube introduced at the waist of the nanofiber. The cavity has been theoretically characterized using FDTD simulations to obtain the reflection and transmission spectra. We have also experimentally measured the transmission spectra and a Q-factor of ~784(87) for a very short periodic structure has been observed. The structure provides strong confinement of the cavity field and its potential for optical network integration makes it an ideal candidate for use in nanophotonic and quantum information systems.

Abstract:The resonant frequencies of a single cavity embedded in the three-dimensional layer-by-layer photonic crystal are studied with microwave experiments and transfer-scattering matrix method simulations. The effects of the number of cladding layers and the size of the embedded cavity on resonant frequencies and Q values are carefully examined. The fine increments of cavity size indicate a new pattern of relation between resonant frequencies and cavity sizes.

Abstract:Rolling up 2D atomic layered materials into 1D nanotubes gives rise to fascinating properties due to their lower dimension, higher anisotropy, and strain effects. In this work, the curving of 2D graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) sheets into 1D nanotubes is demonstrated for the first time through simple and clean ultrasonic treatments. The steady-state optical transitions are slightly enhanced while the localized trapping of excited carriers is considerably suppressed after rolling up the planar sheets into nanotubes. The mechanical method to modulate the dimension scarcely changes the chemical structures, enabling the pure investigation on shape-induced physical effects. As a proof of principle, this work confirms the dynamics of excited carriers, and the photoelectronic properties of 2D semiconductors can be significantly engineered by a simple morphological evolution.

Abstract:The dielectric resonances of spherically symmetric micro/nano cavity in zero-index materials have been systematically studied. However, the resonance properties of other shaped dielectric cavities in zero-index materials remain unclear. Here, we theoretically investigate the electromagnetic resonances of the dielectric cavity with cylindrical symmetry in the epsilon-near-zero materials. This kind of cavity supports a set of resonances with strong light confinement, including dipole, quadrupole and higher-order modes with multiple nodes. Furthermore, there is a redshift of the resonance wavelength with an increment of its size, obeying a law as the function of diameter and height. Also, we find that the redshift will be slower for higher-order modes. Through the infinite refractive index contrast and extra degree of freedom, they should have potential application in the enhancement of light-matter interaction and multiple-functional light manipulation in the integrated optical systems.

Abstract:The pore structures are invariably ignored when evaluating the dielectric properties of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics. In this work, the effects of pore structures on the dielectric properties were revealed using both theoretical models and experimental evaluation. Theoretical models illustrate that the pore geometry and average pore radius are the determinants of dielectric properties when porosity remains constant. Experimentally, Si3N4-based ceramics with different pore structures were achieved via adding different amounts of β-Si3N4 whiskers. Then the correlations between dielectric properties and pore structures were investigated. The marked variation between experimental dielectric constants and three homogeneous isometrical sphere models reveals that the pore structures have conspicuous effects on the dielectric properties, as well as the consistent loss tangents.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures host many-body quantum phenomena that can be tuned in situ using electrostatic gates. These gates are often microstructured graphite flakes that naturally form plasmonic cavities, confining light in discrete standing waves of current density due to their finite size. Their resonances typically lie in the GHz - THz range, corresponding to the same $\mu$eV - meV energy scale characteristic of many quantum effects in the materials they electrically control. This raises the possibility that built-in cavity modes could be relevant for shaping the low-energy physics of vdW heterostructures. However, capturing this light-matter interaction remains elusive as devices are significantly smaller than the diffraction limit at these wavelengths, hindering far-field spectroscopic tools. Here, we report on the sub-wavelength cavity electrodynamics of graphene embedded in a vdW heterostructure plasmonic microcavity. Using on-chip THz spectroscopy, we observed spectral weight transfer and an avoided crossing between the graphite cavity and graphene plasmon modes as the graphene carrier density was tuned, revealing their ultrastrong coupling. Our findings show that intrinsic cavity modes of metallic gates can sense and manipulate the low-energy electrodynamics of vdW heterostructures. This opens a pathway for deeper understanding of emergent phases in these materials and new functionality through cavity control.

Abstract:A model including a periodically corrugated thin layer with a GaAs substrate is employed to investigate the effects of the corrugations on the transmission probability of the nanostructure. We find that transmission gaps and resonant tunneling domains emerge from the corrugations, in the tunneling domains the tunneling peaks and valleys result from the boundaries between adjacent regions in which an electron has different effective masses, and can be slightly modified by the layer thickness. These results can provide a way to design a curvature-tunable filter.

Abstract:(1)A 2D tunneling model is developed to assess the tunneling reduction in cylindrical gate (CG) in nanowire (NW) MOSFETs with radius Rs, comparing with the planar double gate (PG-DG) transistor with Tsemi=2Rs and same dielectric thickness Tox. High-k gate dielectric is more effective to suppress the gate leakage in NW than in PG transistors, (2) the carrier quantization induced tunneling barrier reduction is larger in NW than in DG-PG transistors. The gate tunneling rate is finally determined by combining two effects of (1) and (2). Different results for Si, Ge, and InGaAs NWs are demonstrated, (3) comparing with PG transistor, the overdrive gate voltage in NW transistor can be reduced significantly. At the same time evolution of dielectric charge generation, the NW transistor lifetime can be greatly extended.
Effects of Stacking Order, Layer Number and External Electric Field on Electronic Structures of Few-Layer C2n-H2d

Abstract:Recently, a new type of two-dimensional layered material, i.e. a nitrogenated holey two-dimensional structure C2N-h2D, has been synthesized using a simple wet-chemical reaction and used to fabricate a field-effect transistor device (Nat. Commun., 2015, 6, 6486). Here we have performed a first-principles study of the electronic properties of few-layer C2N-h2D with different stacking orders and layer numbers. Because of the interlayer coupling mainly in terms of the orbital interaction, band structure of this system, especially splitting of the bands and band gap, depends on its stacking order between the layers, and the band gap exhibits monotonically decreasing behavior as the layer number increases. All the few-layer C2N-h2D materials have characteristics of direct band gap, irrespective of the stacking order and layer number examined in our calculations. And bulk C2N-h2D has an indirect or direct band gap, depending on the stacking order. Besides, when we apply an out-of-plane electric field on few-layer C2N-h2D, its band gap will decrease as the electric field increases due to a giant Stark effect except for the monolayer case, and even a semiconductor-to-metal transition may occur for few-layer C2N-h2D with more layers under an appropriate electric field. Owing to their tunable band gaps in a wide range, the layered C2N-h2D materials will have tremendous opportunities to be applied in nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We present a novel design of optical micro-cavity where the optical energy resides primarily in free space, therefore is readily accessible to foreign objects such as atoms, molecules, mechanical resonators, etc. We describe the physics of these resonators, and propose a design method based on stochastic optimization. Cavity designs with diffraction-limited mode volumes and quality factors in the range of $10^4$--$10^6$ are presented. With a purely planar geometry, the cavity can be easily integrated on-chip using conventional micro- and nano- fabrication processes.
An effective cavity resonance model for enhanced optical transmission through arrays of subwavelength apertures in metal films

Abstract:We present a novel theoretical approach for modeling the resonant properties of transmission through subwavelength apertures penetrating metal films. We show that cavity mode theory applies to an effective resonant cavity whose dimensions are determined by the aperture's geometry and the evanescent decay lengths of the associated diffracted waves. This method suggests a concrete physical mechanism for the enhanced transmission observed in periodic aperture arrays, namely it is the evanescently scattered light, localized in the near field of metal surface, which couples into the apertures. Furthermore, it analytically predicts the frequencies of peaks in enhanced transmission, the quality factor of the peaks, and explains their dependence on variation in the hole radius, periodicity, and the film thickness over a wide range of geometries. This model demonstrates strong correlation to simulation and existing results with a high degree of accuracy.
Enhancement and speed-up of carrier dynamics in a dielectric nanocavity with deep sub-wavelength confinement

Abstract:The emergence of dielectric bowtie cavities enable optical confinement with ultrahigh quality factor and ultra-small optical mode volumes with perspectives for enhanced light-matter interaction. Experimental work has so far emphasized the realization of these nanocavities. Here, we experimentally investigate the ultrafast dynamics of a topology-optimized dielectric (silicon) bowtie nanocavity, with device dimensions down to 12 nm, that localizes light to a mode volume deep below the so-called diffraction limit given by the half-wavelength cubed. This strong spatial light concentration is shown to significantly enhance the carrier generation rate through two-photon absorption, as well as reducing the time it takes for the carriers to recover. A diffusion time below 1 ps is achieved for the bowtie cavity, which is more than an order of magnitude smaller than for a conventional microcavity. Additionally, parametric effects due to coherent interactions between pump and probe signals are also enhanced in the bowtie cavity, leading to an improved extinction ratio. These results demonstrate important fundamental advantages of dielectric bowtie cavities compared to conventional point-defect cavities, laying a foundation for novel low-power and ultrafast optical devices, including switches and modulators.

Abstract:Resonances in optical cavities are used to manipulate light propagation, enhance light-matter interaction, modulate quantum states, and so on. However, the index contrast between the traditional cavities and the host is generally not high, which to some extent limited their performances. By putting dielectric cavities into a host of zero-index materials, index contrast in principle can approach infinity. Here, we analytically deduced Mie resonance conditions at this extreme circumstance. Interestingly, we discovered a so-called resonance nesting effect, in which a set of cavities with different radii can possess the same type of resonance at the same wavelength. We also revealed previously unknown degeneracy between the 2(l)-TM (2(l)-TE) and 2(l+1)-TE (2(l + 1) -TM) modes for epsilon approximate to 0 (mu approximate to 0) material, and the 2(l)-TM and 2(l)-TE for both epsilon approximate to 0 and mu approximate to 0. Such extraordinary resonance nesting and degeneracy provide additional principles to manipulate cavity behaviors.
