Abstract:Understanding the frequency spectrum of the optical force is important for controlling and manipulating micro- and nano-scale objects using light. Spectral resonances of these objects can significantly influence the optical force spectrum. In this paper, we develop a theoretical formalism based on the temporal coupled-mode theory that analytically describes the lineshapes of force spectra and their dependencies on resonant scatterers for arbitrary incident wavefronts. We obtain closed-form formulae and discuss the conditions for achieving symmetric as well as asymmetric lineshapes, pertaining, respectively, to a Lorentzian and Fano resonance. The relevance of formalism as a design tool is exemplified for a conceptual scheme of the size-sorting mechanism of small particles, which plays a role in biomedical diagnosis. Abstract:Temporal coupled-mode theory has been widely used to describe the physics of resonant optical systems. In general, an optical system can be constrained by energy conservation, time-reversal symmetry, and reciprocity. Most previous developments of temporal coupled-mode theory made use of all three constraints. In this paper, we consider separately the implication of each of these constraints on the parameters of temporal coupled-mode theory. For this purpose we made extensive use of the connection between a physical system and its time-reversal conjugate. This connection also indicates some of the nontrivial implications of the relation between the resonant properties of a physical system and its time-reversal conjugate. We validate these implications numerically by direct electromagnetic simulations of a guided resonance system. This work should enable the application of temporal coupled-mode theory to a wider range of resonant systems.

Abstract:We have proposed generalized temporal coupled-mode theory for P T-symmetric optical resonator, and on this basis we have explained the Fano resonance in P T-symmetric photonic heterostructure. Our theoretical predictions agree very well with the simulated results obtained by transfer matrix method, which confirms the correctness of our theory. Compared with conventional Fano resonance in optical resonator with time-reversal symmetry, in this Fano resonance the amplitudes of scattering coefficients can be tuned in much larger range, which can be much larger than one, and tend to infinity at singular scattering point, where the rates of dissipation and accumulation are equal to each other and the difference of the phases of the coupling coefficients between output fields and resonant mode is equal to ±π/2. Not only that, the quality factor Q here can be negative out of accumulation, and approaches infinity at this singular scattering point. The phases of reflections jump π in the vicinity of the minima of corresponding amplitudes. We believe that we open a new door to study Fano resonance in non-Hermitian optics and inspire relevant study in other non-Hermitian wave systems.

Abstract:We present a theory for Fano interference in light scattering by individual obstacle, based on a temporal coupled-mode formalism. This theory is applicable for obstacles that are much smaller than the incident wavelength, or for systems with two-dimensional cylindrical or three-dimensional spherical symmetry. We show that for each angle momentum channel, the Fano interference effect can be modeled by a simple temporal coupled-mode equation, which provides a line shape formula for scattering and absorption cross-section. We validate the analysis with numerical simulations. As an application of the theory, we design a structure that exhibits strong absorption and weak scattering properties at the same frequency.

Abstract:We develop a temporal coupled-mode theory to describe the interaction of plane wave with an individual scatterer having an arbitrary shape. The theory involves the expansion of the fields on cylindrical or spherical wave basis for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, respectively, and describes the scattering process in terms of a background scattering matrix and the resonant radiation coefficients into different cylindrical or spherical wave channels. This theory provides a general formula for the scattering and absorption cross sections. We show that for a subwavelength asymmetric scatterer with a single resonance, the scattering and absorption cross sections can exceed the single-resonance limit for some specific incident angles of illumination, but the sum of these cross sections over all angles has an upper limit. We validate the theory with numerical simulations of a metallic scatterer that does not have any rotation symmetry.

Abstract:We measure and analyze reflection spectra of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities. The observed Fano lines offer insight in the reflection and coupling processes. Very different from side-coupled systems, the observed Fano line shape is not caused by the termini of the waveguide, but the coupling process between the measurement device fiber and the waveguide. Our experimental results and analytical model show that the Fano parameter that describes the Fano line shape is very sensitive to the coupling condition. A movement of the fiber well below the Rayleigh range can lead to a drastic change of the Fano line shape.

Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. Abstract:A Fano resonance originates from the resonant coupling between interacting multipoles inside nanostructures. It breaks the symmetry of spectral line shape and enables Fano-resonant media to present unusual scattering properties. However, understanding the mechanical effects of such multipolar coupling systems is highly complex compared with the traditional simple dipole. In this work, using single Si nanospheres as the Fano-resonant media, optical forces arising from different types of Fano resonances including the electric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric Fano resonances are investigated. It is shown that the directions of these types of forces are tunable in three dimensions. The necessary condition to realize a direction change of the Fano-resonance-induced forces and elucidate the underlying physics are presented. Furthermore, it is found that the Fano-resonance-induced forces exhibit strong polarization-dependent properties which traditional optical (dipolar) forces cannot possess. Optical forces due to the electric, magnetic, and hybrid Fano interference are investigated for silicon nanoparticles in optical tweezers. A universal theory is presented to unravel the necessary condition for attaining the sign change of the multipolar interplay components that have dramatically different responses to the light polarization. image

Abstract:We observe from simulations that a doubly resonant structure can exhibit spectral behavior analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency, as well as superscattering, depending on the excitation. We develop a coupled-mode theory that explains this behavior in terms of the orthogonality of the radiation patterns of the eigenmodes. These results provide insight in the general electromagnetic properties of photonic nanostructures and metamaterials.

Abstract:We consider the resonant optical force acting on a pair of transparent microspheres by the excitation of the Morphology Dependent Resonance (MDR). The bonding and anti-bonding modes of the MDR correspond to strong attractions and repulsions respectively. The dependence of the force on separation and the role of absorption are discussed. At resonance, the force can be enhanced by orders of magnitude so that it will dominate over other relevant forces. We find that a stable binding configuration can be induced by the resonant optical force.

Abstract:We investigate the extraordinary behavior of periodic photonic structures within radiation continuum from the perspective of interfering resonance. The coupled-channel equations of both TE-like and TM-like polarizations are reformulated into the similar forms of the quantum-defect theory that describes the interference of resonances belonging to different Coulombic quantum channels. The concepts of closed-channel, open-channel, coupling potential, and eigenvalues are well interpreted. Some iteration techniques, i.e., field-iteration and k-iteration, are proposed to obtain self-consistent solution of the coupled-channel equations. The iterations are important to guarantee quantitative accuracy for high-index-contrast structure, in which the strength of wave interactions is significantly enhanced compared with its low-index-contrast counterpart. The semianalytical results of resonance wavelength, transmissivity/reflectivity spectrum, and band structure agree well with the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, confirming the accuracy of the iterations. The interfering resonance provides a clear and consistent picture to understand the periodic photonic structure within radiation continuum, and also reveals the intrinsic similarities between the photonic and quantum systems.

Abstract:The Fano effect or Fano resonance with a characteristically asymmetric line shape originates from quantum interference between direct and indirect transition pathways in continuum-bound coupled systems, and is a ubiquitous phenomenon in atomic, molecular, nuclear and solid-state physics. In optical nanoscale structures, the Fano effect has wide-ranging applications that include optical filtering, sensing, all-optical switching, quantum interferometry and nonlinear optics, and this opens new avenues for photonic devices. The emergent area of ultracold atomic and molecular gases presents an ideal platform for studying Fano resonances, since the physical parameters of these gases can be extensively tuned with high precision using external fields. However, an experimental demonstration of the Fano effect in hybridized atom-molecular coupled systems has remained elusive. Here, we report on observations of the Fano effect in molecular spectra obtained by photoassociation near a d-wave Feshbach resonance. This effect occurs due to quantum interference in PA transitions involving the continuum of atom-atom scattering states, the underlying Feshbach and photoassociated excited bound molecular states. We measure the variation in atom loss rate with an external magnetic field close to the Feshbach resonance in the presence of PA laser, and thereby clearly demonstrate the Fano effect. Our results further reveal that the Fano effect has significant influence on spectral shifts. Based on Fano's method, we develop a theory that explains the observed experimental results relatively well. Our theoretical formulation takes into account quantum interference between or among multiple transition pathways and between inelastic channels. Our results present a novel method for tuning the collisional interaction strength with laser light using Fano resonance.

Coupled-mode theory for astrophotonics

Abstract:Coupled-mode theory (CMT) is a powerful tool for simulating near-harmonic systems. In telecommunications, variations of the theory have been used extensively to study waveguides, both analytically and through numerical modelling. Analogous mathematical techniques to the CMT are also widely used in quantum mechanics. The purpose of this work is to collect different formulations of the CMT and their underlying connections to quantum mechanical techniques, and to showcase their utility in modelling slowly varying waveguides including directional couplers and photonic lanterns. My choice of example waveguides is motivated by the astronomical applications of such devices in starlight nulling, wavefront sensing, and high-resolution spectroscopy. I first provide a brief review of the standard form of the CMT, applicable for waveguides with fixed eigenmodes. Next, I show that the CMT also applies for slowly varying waveguides, and demonstrate the close relation between the CMT and several well-known approximation methods from quantum mechanics, as well as concepts like geometric phase. Finally, I present a verification of my analysis, in the form of the numerical package cbeam.

Abstract:Fano resonance is a pervasive phenomenon observed across many systems, which has traditionally been interpreted through the coupled harmonic oscillator model. However, the traditional model is limited, especially for different line shapes. In this study, we offer a generalized model by incorporating an imaginary coupling coefficient. This approach fundamentally differs from existing theories by identifying two unique Fano line shapes in the electric field of metallic Fabry-Perot cavity. The model connects the imaginary coupling coefficient with phase distribution of the coupling mode, thus revealing the relationship between Fano line shapes and the trend of phase shifts. This provides a new way for understanding and manipulating Fano resonance. The Fano resonance generation has been validated experimentally through reflection spectra. Our investigation offers a new perspective for understanding of Fano resonance via the coupled harmonic oscillator model and paves a way for the development of dynamically tunable Fano resonance devices.

Abstract:Coupled photonic systems exhibit intriguing optical responses attracting intensive attention, but available theoretical tools either cannot reveal the underlying physics or are empirical in nature. Here, we derive a rigorous theoretical framework from first principles (i.e., Maxwell's equations), with all parameters directly computable via wave function integrations, to study coupled photonic systems containing multiple resonators. Benchmark calculations against Mie theory reveal the physical meanings of the parameters defined in our theory and their mutual relations. After testing our theory numerically and experimentally on a realistic plasmonic system, we show how to utilize it to freely tailor the lineshape of a coupled system, involving two plasmonic resonators exhibiting arbitrary radiative losses, particularly how to create a completely "dark" mode with vanishing radiative loss (e.g., a bound state in continuum). All theoretical predictions are quantitatively verified by our experiments at near-infrared frequencies. Our results not only help understand the profound physics in such coupled photonic systems, but also offer a powerful tool for fast designing functional devices to meet diversified application requests.
Optical force on toroidal nanostructures: toroidal dipole versus renormalized electric dipole

Abstract:We study the optical forces acting on toroidal nanostructures. A great enhancement of optical force is unambiguously identified as originating from the toroidal dipole resonance based on the source-representation, where the distribution of the induced charges and currents is characterized by the three families of electric, magnetic, and toroidal multipoles. On the other hand, the resonant optical force can also be completely attributed to an electric dipole resonance in the alternative field-representation, where the electromagnetic fields in the source-free region are expressed by two sets of electric and magnetic multipole fields based on symmetry. The confusion is resolved by conceptually introducing the irreducible electric dipole, toroidal dipole, and renormalized electric dipole. We demonstrate that the optical force is a powerful tool to identify toroidal response even when its scattering intensity is dwarfed by the conventional electric and magnetic multipoles.

Generalized angle-orbital-angular-momentum Talbot effect and modulo mode sorting

Abstract:The Talbot effect describes periodic revivals of field patterns and is ubiquitous across wave systems. In optics, it is mostly known for its manifestations in space and time, but is also observed in the wavevector and frequency spectra owing to the Fourier duality. Recently, the Talbot self-imaging has been shown separately in the azimuthal angle and orbital angular momentum (OAM) domains. Here, we unveil the missing link between them and demonstrate the generalized angle-OAM Talbot effect. Versatile transformations of petal fields and OAM spectra are experimentally showcased, based on the synergy of angular Talbot phase modulation and light propagation in a ring-core fiber. Moreover, the generalized self-imaging concept leads to new realizations in mode sorting, which separate OAM modes in a modulo manner, theoretically free from any crosstalk within the congruence classes of OAM modes. We design and experimentally construct various mode sorters with excellent performance, and show the unconventional behavior of Talbot-based sorters where neighboring OAM modes can be mapped to positions far apart. Besides its fundamental interest, our work finds applications in OAM-based information processing, and implies that the physical phenomena in time-frequency and angle-OAM domains are broadly connected as well as their processing techniques may be borrowed interchangeably.

Abstract:Narrow optical resonances of atoms or molecules have immense significance in various precision measurements, such as testing fundamental physics and the generation of primary frequency standards. In these studies, accurate transition centers derived from fitting the measured spectra are demanded, which critically rely on the knowledge of spectral line profiles. Here, we propose a new mechanism of Fano-like resonance induced by distant discrete levels and experimentally verify it with Doppler-free spectroscopy of vibration-rotational transitions of CO_{2}. The observed spectrum has an asymmetric profile and its amplitude increases quadratically with the probe laser power. Our results facilitate a broad range of topics based on narrow transitions.
