Abstract:We present a theory for Fano interference in light scattering by individual obstacle, based on a temporal coupled-mode formalism. This theory is applicable for obstacles that are much smaller than the incident wavelength, or for systems with two-dimensional cylindrical or three-dimensional spherical symmetry. We show that for each angle momentum channel, the Fano interference effect can be modeled by a simple temporal coupled-mode equation, which provides a line shape formula for scattering and absorption cross-section. Abstract:We develop a temporal coupled-mode theory to describe the interaction of plane wave with an individual scatterer having an arbitrary shape. The theory involves the expansion of the fields on cylindrical or spherical wave basis for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, respectively, and describes the scattering process in terms of a background scattering matrix and the resonant radiation coefficients into different cylindrical or spherical wave channels. This theory provides a general formula for the scattering and absorption cross sections. We show that for a subwavelength asymmetric scatterer with a single resonance, the scattering and absorption cross sections can exceed the single-resonance limit for some specific incident angles of illumination, but the sum of these cross sections over all angles has an upper limit. We validate the theory with numerical simulations of a metallic scatterer that does not have any rotation symmetry.
Generalized temporal coupled-mode theory for a P T-symmetric optical resonator and Fano resonance in a P T-symmetric photonic heterostructure

Abstract:We have proposed generalized temporal coupled-mode theory for P T-symmetric optical resonator, and on this basis we have explained the Fano resonance in P T-symmetric photonic heterostructure. Our theoretical predictions agree very well with the simulated results obtained by transfer matrix method, which confirms the correctness of our theory. Compared with conventional Fano resonance in optical resonator with time-reversal symmetry, in this Fano resonance the amplitudes of scattering coefficients can be tuned in much larger range, which can be much larger than one, and tend to infinity at singular scattering point, where the rates of dissipation and accumulation are equal to each other and the difference of the phases of the coupling coefficients between output fields and resonant mode is equal to ±π/2. Not only that, the quality factor Q here can be negative out of accumulation, and approaches infinity at this singular scattering point. The phases of reflections jump π in the vicinity of the minima of corresponding amplitudes. We believe that we open a new door to study Fano resonance in non-Hermitian optics and inspire relevant study in other non-Hermitian wave systems.

Abstract:We measure and analyze reflection spectra of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities. The observed Fano lines offer insight in the reflection and coupling processes. Very different from side-coupled systems, the observed Fano line shape is not caused by the termini of the waveguide, but the coupling process between the measurement device fiber and the waveguide. Our experimental results and analytical model show that the Fano parameter that describes the Fano line shape is very sensitive to the coupling condition. A movement of the fiber well below the Rayleigh range can lead to a drastic change of the Fano line shape.

Abstract:We observe from simulations that a doubly resonant structure can exhibit spectral behavior analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency, as well as superscattering, depending on the excitation. We develop a coupled-mode theory that explains this behavior in terms of the orthogonality of the radiation patterns of the eigenmodes. These results provide insight in the general electromagnetic properties of photonic nanostructures and metamaterials.

Abstract:Temporal coupled-mode theory has been widely used to describe the physics of resonant optical systems. In general, an optical system can be constrained by energy conservation, time-reversal symmetry, and reciprocity. Most previous developments of temporal coupled-mode theory made use of all three constraints. In this paper, we consider separately the implication of each of these constraints on the parameters of temporal coupled-mode theory. For this purpose we made extensive use of the connection between a physical system and its time-reversal conjugate. This connection also indicates some of the nontrivial implications of the relation between the resonant properties of a physical system and its time-reversal conjugate. We validate these implications numerically by direct electromagnetic simulations of a guided resonance system. This work should enable the application of temporal coupled-mode theory to a wider range of resonant systems.
Novel High Performance Fano Resonance Sensor with Circular Split Ring Resonance

Abstract:This study conducts an in-depth discussion on the Fano resonance phenomenon and its application in optical sensors. A circular split ring was proposed. By designing a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure with specific geometric parameters, we successfully excited the Fano resonance, which produced a unique asymmetric Fano through the coupling of discrete and continuous states. Resonance transmission spectroscopy. The sensitivity of Fano resonance is extremely sensitive to changes in structural parameters. This characteristic provides a theoretical basis for the development of highly sensitive optical sensors. The simulation results show that by optimizing the structural parameters, high sensitivity Fano resonance characteristics can be obtained, further enhancing the performance of the optical sensor. The calculated sensitivity is as high as 1250 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) reaches 54, indicating that the designed MIM waveguide structure has excellent sensing capabilities. This study not only demonstrates the potential of Fano resonance in improving sensor sensitivity, but also provides valuable guidance for the design and development of future optical sensors.

Abstract:Fano resonance is a pervasive phenomenon observed across many systems, which has traditionally been interpreted through the coupled harmonic oscillator model. However, the traditional model is limited, especially for different line shapes. In this study, we offer a generalized model by incorporating an imaginary coupling coefficient. This approach fundamentally differs from existing theories by identifying two unique Fano line shapes in the electric field of metallic Fabry-Perot cavity. The model connects the imaginary coupling coefficient with phase distribution of the coupling mode, thus revealing the relationship between Fano line shapes and the trend of phase shifts. This provides a new way for understanding and manipulating Fano resonance. The Fano resonance generation has been validated experimentally through reflection spectra. Our investigation offers a new perspective for understanding of Fano resonance via the coupled harmonic oscillator model and paves a way for the development of dynamically tunable Fano resonance devices.

Abstract:The Fano effect or Fano resonance with a characteristically asymmetric line shape originates from quantum interference between direct and indirect transition pathways in continuum-bound coupled systems, and is a ubiquitous phenomenon in atomic, molecular, nuclear and solid-state physics. In optical nanoscale structures, the Fano effect has wide-ranging applications that include optical filtering, sensing, all-optical switching, quantum interferometry and nonlinear optics, and this opens new avenues for photonic devices. The emergent area of ultracold atomic and molecular gases presents an ideal platform for studying Fano resonances, since the physical parameters of these gases can be extensively tuned with high precision using external fields. However, an experimental demonstration of the Fano effect in hybridized atom-molecular coupled systems has remained elusive. Here, we report on observations of the Fano effect in molecular spectra obtained by photoassociation near a d-wave Feshbach resonance. This effect occurs due to quantum interference in PA transitions involving the continuum of atom-atom scattering states, the underlying Feshbach and photoassociated excited bound molecular states. We measure the variation in atom loss rate with an external magnetic field close to the Feshbach resonance in the presence of PA laser, and thereby clearly demonstrate the Fano effect. Our results further reveal that the Fano effect has significant influence on spectral shifts. Based on Fano's method, we develop a theory that explains the observed experimental results relatively well. Our theoretical formulation takes into account quantum interference between or among multiple transition pathways and between inelastic channels. Our results present a novel method for tuning the collisional interaction strength with laser light using Fano resonance.

Abstract:In recent years, the manipulation of Fano resonances in the time domain has unlocked deep insights into a broad spectrum of systems' coherent dynamics. Here, inelastic scattering of light with coherent acoustic phonons is harnessed to achieve complex Fano resonances. The sudden change of phonon momentum during reflection leads to a transition from anti-Stokes to Stokes light scattering, producing two different resonances that interfere in the measurement process. We highlight the conditions necessary to achieve such interference, revealing an underlying symmetry between photons and phonons, and verify the theory experimentally. Then, we demonstrate the possibility to characterize energy and coherence losses at rough interfaces, thus providing a mechanism for nondestructive testing of interface quality. Abstract:Nowadays nanotechnology allows to scale-down various important devices (sensors, chips, fibres, etc), and, thus, opens up new horizon for their applications. Nevertheless, the efficiency most of them is still based on the fundamental physical phenomena, such as resonances. Thus, the understanding of the resonance phenomena will be beneficial. One of the well-known examples is the resonant enhancement of the transmission known as Breit-Wigner resonances, which can be described by a Lorentzian function. But, in many physical systems the scattering of waves involves propagation along different paths, and, as a consequence, results in interference phenomena, where constructive interference corresponds to resonant enhancement and destructive interference to resonant suppression of the transmission. Recently, a variety of experimental and theoretical work has revealed such patterns in different branches of physics. The purpose of this Review is to demonstrate that this kind of resonant scattering is related to the Fano resonances, known from atomic physics. One of the main features of the Fano resonances is the asymmetric profile. The asymmetry comes from the close coexistence of resonant transmission and resonant reflection. Fano successfully explained such a phenomenon in his seminal paper in 1961 in terms of interaction of a discrete (localized) state with a continuum of propagation modes. It allows to describe both resonant enhancement and resonant suppression in a unified manner. All of these properties can be demonstrated in the frame of a very simple model, which will be used throughout the Review to show that resonant reflections observed in different complex systems are indeed closely related to the Fano resonances.

Fano resonance in metallic grating via strongly coupled subwavelength resonators

Abstract:We investigate the Fano resonance in grating structures by using coupled resonators. The grating consists of a perfectly conducting slab with periodically arranged subwavelength slit holes, where inside each period, a pair of slits sit very close to each other. The slit holes act as resonators and are strongly coupled. It is shown rigorously that there exist two groups of resonances corresponding to poles of the scattering problem. One sequence of resonances have imaginary part on the order of $\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is the size of the slit aperture, while the other sequence have imaginary part on the order of $\varepsilon^2$. When coupled with the incident wave at resonant frequencies, the narrow-band resonant scattering induced by the latter will interfere with the broader background resonant radiation induced by the former. The interference of these two resonances generates the Fano type transmission anomaly, which persists in the whole radiation continuum of the grating structure as long as the slit aperture size is small compared to the incident wavelength.

Abstract:The investigation on the coherent coupling in the plasmon-TMDCs hybrid system is attracting great attention for its high tunability of the systematic components as well as for the potential applications on the nanophotonic devices. Abundant investigations of the plasmon–exciton hybrid system focused on the internal Rabi-type coupling from week coupling regime to strong coupling regime. Here, we demonstrate the Fano-type asymmetry in the open plasmon-exciton system both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical framework based on the cavity electrodynamics (CQED) is first proposed to distinguish the Fano-type asymmetry from Rabi-type asymmetry. The former is due to the interference process, while the latter is due to the detuning of the plasmonic and excitonic resonances. The Fano-type interference process is found to enhance the lower energy branch (LEB) and reduce the higher energy branch (HEB), resulting in the Fano-type asymmetry in the output spectra, even at zero detuning. The theoretical predictions are confirmed through the layer-dependent and temperature-dependent measurements on the mono- and multilayer WSe2-plasmonic lattice system. We found that distinct from the Rabi-type process, where the internal plasmon–exciton coupling dominates, the Fano-type process is also highly dependent on the external excitations on the exciton and plasmon components. Our work sheds light on the Fano interference process in the plasmon–exciton coupled system and would boost the applications of novel two-dimensional plasmonic polaritonic devices in the field of ultrasensing or detection.

Coupled square well model and Fano-phase correspondence

Abstract:This paper investigates the Fano-Feshbach resonance with a two-channel coupled-square-well model in both the frequency and time domains. This systems is shown to exhibit Fano lineshape profiles in the energy absorption spectrum. The associated time-dependent dipole response has a phase shift that has recently been understood to be related to the Fano lineshape asymmetric $q$ parameter by $\phi=2arg(q-i)$. The present study demonstrates that the phase-$q$ correspondence is general for any Fano resonance in the weak coupling regime, independent of the transition mechanism.

Abstract:A compact structure based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) side-coupled cavities for nanosensor is proposed and numerically simulated. Simulation results show that a typical Lorentzian and Fano-like response emerge in the transmission spectrum, and they can be easily tuned by changing the length of the side cavity and the material imbedded in the resonator. Based on above analysis, our structures offer flexibility to design nanosensor with a sensitivity of ~1820 nm/RIU and a figure of merit about 4.5 × 10 4 . By adding another side-coupled cavity, multiple Fano resonances are achieved and the sensing properties are also investigated. Our structures may have important potential applications in highly integrated optical circuits and networks, especially for nanosensor, spectral splitter, and nonlinear devices.
Chaos-assisted Free-Space Coupling and Transmission Spectra of High-Q Deformed Microcavities

Abstract:We investigate the efficient free-space excitation of high-Q resonance modes in deformed microcavities via dynamical tunneling-assisted coupling. A quantum scattering theory is employed to study the free-space transmission properties, and it is found that the transmission includes the contribution from (1) the off-resonance background and (2) the on-resonance modulation, corresponding to the absence and presence of high-Q modes, respectively. The theory predicts asymmetric Fano-like resonances around high-Q modes in background transmission spectra, which are in good agreement with our recent experimental results. Dynamical tunneling across Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser tori is further studied, which plays an essential role in the Fano-like resonance. This efficient free-space coupling holds potential advantages in simplifying experimental condition and exciting high-Q modes in higher-index-material microcavities.
Multiple Fano Resonances Control in Mim Side-Coupled Cavities Systems

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate a plasmonic waveguide that allows easy control of the fano profile. The proposed structure is analyzed by the coupled-mode theory and demonstrated by the finite-element method. Due to the interaction of the local discrete state and the continuous spectrum caused by the side-coupled cavity and the baffle, respectively, the transmission spectrum exhibits a sharp and asymmetric profile. The profile can be easily tuned by changing the parameters of the structure. Moreover, the compact structure can easily be extended to several complex structures to achieve multiple fano resonances. These characteristics offer flexibility in the design of the device. This nanosensor yields a sensitivity of 1280 nm/RIU and switches with an on/off contrast ratio of about 30 dB. Our structures may have potential applications for nanoscale optical switching, nanosensors, and slow-light devices in highly integrated circuits.
Analysis of formation and evolution of double Fano resonance in sub-wavelength dielectric grating/MDM Waveguide/periodic photonic crystal

Abstract:Based on the diffraction principle and the mode coupling theory, a composite micro-nano structure of sub-wavelength dielectric grating/ metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide/periodic photonic crystal is proposed. Combined with the angle spectrum of reflection, the transmission characteristics of the surface plasmon and the generation mechanism of double Fano resonance at different incident angles and fixed wavelength are analyzed. The studies show that the physical mechanism of double Fano resonance is that the surface plasmon resonance generated at the interface of sub-wavelength dielectric grating and upper metal Ag film, and the waveguide mode resonance occurring in the MDM waveguide, provide the independently tunable double discrete states, under the condition of satisfying wave vector matching, which can be respectively coupled in the near field with the continuous state formed by the photonic band gap effect in the photonic crystal, thereby achieving the double Fano resonance. Then the influence of the structural parameters on the double Fano characteristics is analyzed quantitatively, and the evolution law of the double Fano resonance is explored by the change of the reflection spectra of resonance curves. The results show that the tuning between double Fano resonance curves and the resonance angles can be realized by changing the structural parameters. And under optimal conditions, the figure of merit (FOM) values of FR a and FR b in resonance A region can be as high as 460.0 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M3">\begin{document}$ 4.00 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>, and the FOM values of FR a and FR b in resonance B region can be as high as 269.2 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M4">\begin{document}$ 2.22 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>. Abstract:A novel compact scheme to realize tunable Fano resonance is proposed and investigated theoretically and numerically. The scheme is based on two slot cavities in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure. The model and formation mechanism of Fano resonance in this structure are studied. A new method based on four-mode temporal coupled-mode theory (TCMT) is used to analyze model of the structure with two slot cavities. The formation mechanism of Fano resonance in the proposed scheme is due to the plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) phenomenon in the structure. To the best of our knowledge, this formation mechanism of Fano resonance is revealed for the first time. The tunability and slow light phenomenon in the new structure are also studied. It is believed that research in this article can provide a new method to achieve Fano resonance. Furthermore, it is helpful to establish the Fano resonance model and reveal the formation mechanism of Fano resonance.
