Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks are porous crystal materials made by the coordination of metal sites and organic ligands. MOFs have lots of advantages, such as large specific surface area, controllable coordination and are easily modified by organic functional groups or metal sites. MOF films have been widely valued by researchers based on this. MOF films have special properties that traditional powder materials don't have. This will help them be used more widely in the future. This article summarizes the synthesis methods of MOF films and outlines their advantages and disadvantages. Based on the properties of MOF films, further summarize their potential applications.

Abstract:The conceptual framework presented in this Perspective overviews the design principles of innovative thorium-based materials that could address urgent needs of the medicinal, nuclear energy, and waste remediation sectors from the lens of zirconium and uranium analogs. We survey the intersections of Zr, Th, and U chemistry with a focus on how the intrinsic behavior of each metal translates to broader material properties, including, but not limited to, structural and topological diversity, preferential metal-ligand binding, and reactivity. On the example of several classes of materials, including organometallic complexes, polyoxometalates, and the primary focus of this Perspective, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the design principles that govern the preparation of Zr-, Th-, and U-compounds, including oxophilicity, variation in oxidation states, and stable coordination environments have been considered. Further, we highlight how the impact of the mentioned variables may shift throughout the progression from discrete molecular systems to extended structures. We discuss the common assumption that zirconium-organic materials are typically considered a close analog of thorium-based congeners in areas such as material design and preparation. Through consideration of fundamental chemistry principles, we shed light on the relationships between Zr-, Th-, and U-based materials and highlight how a critical analysis of their distinct properties can be used to target a desired material performance. As a result, we provide a detailed understanding of Th-based materials chemistry by anchoring their fundamental properties between two well-studied reference points, zirconium- and uranium-containing analogs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have different structures and various intrinsic properties, such as large specific surface area, flexible and adjustable structural configurations, coordinately-unsaturated metal center, etc., which facilitate the rapid development and wide application of coordination chemistry, over the past decades, including gas adsorption, catalysis, and magnetism. Although the metals in various regions of the periodic table have been explored to build different monometallic MOFs, the researches about functional heterometallic-organic framework (HMOF) materials have not been particularly in-depth. Compared with monometallic MOFs, some special positions are occupied by the heterogeneous metals in one HMOF, which will result in interesting network topologies, and the excellent synergistic effect between the different metal ions will make the physical and chemical properties to be effectively enhanced. This review mainly focuses on introducing the latest progresses of HMOFs, including the various synthesis strategies, applications and outlooks, which may provide some useful guidance for the preparation of novel HMOF materials and make them widely used in the whole energy landscape.

Synthetic Control of Thorium Polyoxo-Clusters in Metal–Organic Frameworks Toward New Thorium-Based Materials

Abstract:Control over the assembly of thorium-based polyoxo-clusters remains a great challenge because of their quick olation and oxolation reactions. Here, we report the synthesis and isolation of two pure phase thorium polyoxocluster-based metal-organic frameworks (Th-MOFs), Th-NU -1008 and Th-NU-1011. Crystal structures of these Th-MOFs reveal two distinct 8-connected polyoxo-clusters: a hexanuclear cluster [Th-6(mu(3)-O)(4)(OH)(4)(H2O)(6)(HCOO)(4)] was observed in Th-NU-1008 and a tetranuclear cluster [Th-4(mu(3)-O)(2)(OH)(4)(DMF)(2)(H2O)(4)] in Th-NU-1011 which has never been reported before among thorium species. In both Th-NU-1008 and Th-NU-1011, the tetratopic linker, 1,4-dibromo-2,3,5,6-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) benzene, joins the clusters together, forming two three-periodic networks, each with csq topology. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas calculated from the Ar isotherms are approximately 800 and 700 m(2) g(-1) for Th-NU-1008 and Th-NU-1011, respectively. Because the linkers are oriented orthogonal to each other in the two respective MOFs, a 32 angstrom hexagonal channel is observed in Th-NU-1008 while a 15 angstrom channel is observed in Th-NU-1011. This work opens a new avenue to construct unexplored Th-MOF materials with targeted polyoxo-cluster structures.

Abstract:Polymers have become one of the major types of materials that are essential in our daily life. The controlled synthesis of value-added polymers with unique mechanical and chemical properties have attracted broad research interest. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous material with immense structural diversity which offers unique advantages for catalyzing polymerization and oligomerization reactions including the uniformity of the catalytic active site, and the templating effect of the nano-sized channels. We summarized in this review the important recent progress in the field of MOF-catalyzed and MOF-templated polymerizations, to reveal the chemical principle and structural aspects of these systems and hope to inspire the future design of novel polymerization systems with improved activity and specificity.

Abstract:Recently, Zr- and Ti-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gathered increasing interest in the field of chemistry and materials science, not only for their ordered porous structure, large surface area, and high thermal and chemical stability, but also for their various potential applications. Particularly, the unique features of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs enable them to be a highly versatile platform for catalysis. Although much effort has been devoted to developing Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials, they still suffer from difficulties in targeted synthesis, especially for Ti-based MOFs. In this Feature Article, we discuss the evolution of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs, giving a brief overview of their synthesis and structures. Furthermore, the catalytic uses of Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials in the previous 3-5 years have been highlighted. Finally, perspectives on the Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials are also proposed. This work provides in-depth insight into the advances in Zr- and Ti-based MOFs and boosts their catalytic applications.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed by organic linkers and metal nodes, are a new class of crystalline porous materials with significant application potentials. Featured with extremely high surface area, large porosity, tunable pore size, and flexible functionality, MOFs have gained extensive explorations as a highly versatile platform for functional applications in many research fields. This review presents an up-to-date summary ranging from the structural and physical properties of MOFs to their recent application advances including gas storage and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensors, proton conductivity, biomedicine, and others. The structure–property relationships are particularly emphasized. Finally, the newly emerging research trends of MOFs and the unresolved challenges for functional applications are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been explored for applications including but not limited to water adsorption, gas storage and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, and chemical sensing. Zr-MOFs serve as a major class of functional MOFs thanks to their high thermal, chemical and hydrolytic stability, large surface area, and tunable structures with the versatile connectivity. In this work, we highlight the design and synthesis of zirconium-based MOFs as well as their applications. Specifically, we demonstrate how reticular chemistry can direct the rational design and synthesis of functional Zr-MOFs and describe their structure–property relationship. In addition, we feature synthetic strategies, including isoreticular expansion, linker functionalization, node functionalization, and defect engineering, as toolkits to construct tailored material for specific applications.

Abstract:In numerous types of MOFs, zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) were relatively new materials with high surface area, structural diversity, and tailorability, attracted extensive interest and exhibited a variety of applications, especially in adsorption, photocatalysis and catalysis. Their porosity enabled their inherent superiority in confining guest species, such as metals. Herein, this review provided significant progress in combination of metals and Zr-MOFs, including various composites of metals and Zr-MOFs, structure characteristics and applications. Special emphasis was that the review introduced applications of Zr-MOFs in removing pollutants by adsorption, photocatalysis and catalysis and explaining the corresponding mechanism. In addition, the prospects of Zr-MOFs and remaining issues had been indicated.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of material which are able to integrate functional groups on their framework backbones. The tunable functionalities let MOFs be applied in various fields of luminescence, gas storage, sensing, magnetics, catalysis and biomedical imaging. Because of their interesting properties of structural robustness, catalysis, charge and energy transformations, using porphyrins and metalloporphyrins as synthons for the fabrication of functional MOFs has attracted considerable interest. Many efficient strategies have been established for the construction of functional porphyrinic MOFs, and some of them present interesting properties for potential applications. This perspective is aimed to summarize recent progress on porphyrinic MOFs, including new synthesis strategies and applications.
