Abstract:Neutron diffraction experiments on Y(Ti, Fe) 12 have been carried out to study the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Y(Ti Fe) 12 The crystal structure of Y(Ti Fe) 12 belongs to the ThMn 12 type structure, its space group is 14/mmm. Fe and Ti are distributed on three nonequivalent crystallographic sites, and they occupy some sites preferentially. Finally, the results are discussed primarily.

Abstract:Neutron diffraction experiments on Y(Ti,Fe)12 have been carried out to investigate the crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of these compounds. In the ThMn12-type structure, with a space group of I4/mmm, Fe and Ti atoms are distributed on three nonequivalent crystallographic sites. A preferential site occupation for Fe and Ti is observed. The detailed analysis of crystallographic and magnetic arrangement are reported.

Abstract:> The crystallographic structure and intrinsic magnetic properties have been investigated in the RTiFe 11 ,RTiCo 11 and RTi(Fe 1-X Ni X ) 11 compounds,where R represents Nd,Sm,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er and Y.Neutrondiffraction and Mossbauer spectra analyses have been used to study the nuclear and magnetic structure ofthese compounds.the Fe,Co,Ni and Ti atoms are found to exhibit strong site preference with f and j sites fa-voring Fe,Co and Ni atoms and the i site Ti atoms.Two different types of magnetic behavior were observed inthe RTiFe 11 and RTiCo 11 compounds.In the former,the interatomic distance and the number of nearestneighbor atoms play essential roles.In particular,anomalous thermal expansion behavior is presented inRTiFe 11 .In the latter,the magnetic properties are essentially determined by the modification of the cobaltelectronic configuration brought about by the transfer of rare earth conduction electrons to the transition 3dband.The saturation magnetization,Curie temperature and magnetocrystalline anisotropy data of RTiFe 11 ,RTiCo 11 and YTi(Fe 1-X Ni X ) 11 are presented.A tempt to improve the intrinsic magnetic properties inRTiFe 11 has been made,and the results are reported.On the basis of the crystalline field theory by using asingle-ion model,the anisotropy constants and their temperature dependence of the R ions have been calcu-lated,which helps explain the spin reorientation observed in RTiFe 11 .

Abstract:The rare earth-iron intermetallic compounds of SmTiFex with x ranges from 8 to 11, was synthesized by are-melting technic. We found that they crystallize in the ThMn12-type tetragonal structure, 14/mmm. We report here the crystallographic and magnetic properties of Sm(Ti, Fe)12 and Gd (Ti, Fe)12. Unusual uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy was observed in Sm(Ti, Fe)12 compounds. For Sm(Ti, Fe)12, the c-axis is the easy magnetization direction, and Curie temperature is 610 K. The magnetizrystalline anisotropy of Sm and Fe sublattices in Sm(Ti, Fe)12 compounds was analyzed by measuring magnetization curves of Gd(Ti, Fe)12. On the basis of our data, we conclude that both Sm and Fe sublattices have easy axis. After the discovery of Nd2Fe14B magnets, Sm(Ti, Fe)12 is another ternary rare earth-iron intermetallic compounds with strong uniaxial anisotropy.

Abstract:Structure measurements on the carbide Y(TiFeC)12 prepared by arc-melting were carried out by means of powder neutron diffraction. Data analysis by profile technique showed that the carbon atoms occupy the 8i sites in the ThMn12 type structure, substituting for some Fe atoms. The large electronegativity of carbon on the 8i sites explains the observed effect of carbon on the intrinsic magnetic properties of RTiFe11, which is completely different from that of the interstitial nitrogen.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of structure and magnetic properties of the compounds R3Fe29-xTx (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) and their nitrides, carbides and hydrides has been performed. The nitrogenation and carbonization lead to a good improvement in the Curie temperature, the saturation magnetization and anisotropy fields at 4.2 K and room temperature, but the hydrogenation results in a good improvement for some hydrides and an obvious degeneration for other hydrides in the magnetic properties. The uniaxial anisotropy and the good intrinsic magnetic properties of Sm3Fe29-xTxNy and Sm3Fe29-xTxCy make these compounds the hopeful candidates for new high- performance hard magnets.

Abstract:The compounds YTi (Fe1-xNix)11 are found to crystallize in the ThMn12-type tetragonal structure (space group 14/mmm) when x1-xNix)11 has been studied and explained in terms of the interatomic distance dependence of exchange interaction between Fe atoms.

Abstract:A systematic study on the structural and magnetic properties of the Rfe10.5V1.5Nx series, where R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, has been carried out by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. Rfe10.5V1.5Nx compounds show a higher Curie temperature and a larger saturation magnetization due to the lower content of V compared with Rfe10V2Nx In NdRfe10.5V1.5Nx the c-axis is the easy axis from 0 K to Tc, the anisotropy field is up to 185 kOe at 1.5 k and 102 kOe at room temperature with a combination of a high Curie temperature of 784 K and a large room temperature saturation magnetization of 139.1 emu/g, the intrinsic magnetic properties are favourable for permanent magnet applications.

Abstract:The Fe-ternary Dy(Fe,T)12 (T=Ti, V, Cr, Nb, Mo) systems, in which Fe is replaced by T, have been studied to ascertain the effect of substitution on their phase stability and site preference. Calculation is based on a series of interatomic pair potentials related to the rare earth and transition metals, which are obtained by a strict lattice inversion method. Calculated results show that either Ti, V, Cr, Nb, or Mo atoms can stabilize Dy(Fe,T)12 with ThMn12-type structure. These stabilizing elements T prefer to substitute for Fe in 8i sites. Moreover, the N atoms preferentially occupy 2b interstitial sites and the increase of Curie temperature of Dy(Fe,T)12Nx with N is explained qualitatively by the exchange interaction model. The method utilized in the present investigation offers a rather easy and direct way to study the structural properties of Dy(Fe,T)12 and Dy(Fe,T)12Nx.

Abstract:We have succeeded in preparing RFe10.5V1.5 compounds and their corresponding nitrides RFe10.5V1.5Nx, where R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Td, Dy, Ho, and Er. The structural and magnetic properties of RFe10.5V1.5Nx have been investigated by x-ray diffraction techniques and magnetic measurements and compared with those of RFe10.5V1.5, NdFe10.5V1.5Nx is a new potential hard magnetic material with excellent intrinsic magnetic properties.

Abstract:The newly developed full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) and local orbitals (lo) based on standard APW methods are briefly introduced, and the structure and magnetic properties of R(Fe, Si)(12) compounds (R = Y, Nd) are calculated using the method. The distribution of Si at different sites is analyzed based on total energy of one crystal unit with structure having been optimized. The characters of magnetic moments, total density of states (TDOS) and partial density of states (PDOS) for different crystal sites Si occupies are obtained and analyzed. The results show that the total magnetic moments of RFe10Si2 (R = Y, Nd) are larger than those of RFe10M2 (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Mo and W) and the hybridization mechanism is seen as follows. Si(8j) reduce the magnetic moments of Fe at three sites, however, Si(8f) mainly reduce the magnetic moments of Fe(8i) and Fe(8j) atoms. The Curie temperature is markedly enhanced by the introduction of Si atoms according to spin fluctuation of DOS at Fermi level.

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of NdTiFe11N0.5 and YTiFe11N0.5 have been studied. The nitrides retain the tetragonal ThMn12 structure and their unit cell volumes slightly increase. The interstitial nitrogen atoms are found to increase the Curie temperature and saturation magnetisation of the compounds, and especially have a strong effect on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Abstract:A series of Y(Fe, M)12 compounds and their hydrides and nitrides, where M  Ti, V, Mo, Cr, W, were prepared single phase. The effects of interstitial H and N atoms on the structural and magnetic properties have been studied by using the X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The hydrides and nitrides still retain the tetragonal structure, but the unit cell volumes are expanded compared to their original counterparts. The saturation magnetization and Curie temperature are increased by both hydrogenation and nitrogenation, whereas the easy c-axis anisotropy related to the Fe-sublattice is enhanced in the hydrides but decreased in the nitrides.

Abstract:The crystallographic and intrinsic magnetic properties of hydride R3Fe29-iTzHy (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) have been investigated. The lattice constants and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29-xTa;Hy decrease with increasing R atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Regular anisotropic expansions, mainly along the a- and b-axis rather than along the c-axis, are observed for all the compounds upon hydrogénation. Hydrogénation leads to an increase in Curie temperature. First-order magnetization processes (FOMP) occur in magnetic fields of around 1.5 T and 4.0 T at 4.2 K for Nd3Fe24.5Cr.,.5H5.o and Tb3Fe27.oCr2.oH2.8, and around 1.4 T at room temperature for Gd3Fe28.oCri.oIl4.2- Abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe29-ITIH!, suggest that the Ce ion is non-triply ionized. © 1999 Trans Tech Publications,.

Abstract:The crystallographic structures and magnetic properties of the nitrides of R2Fe17, R2Fe14B and RTiFe11 have been investigated using X-ray diffraction techniques and magnetic measurements. Nitrogen is found to have the effect of increasing the Curie temperature, as it expands the lattice. Moreover, a distinct effect on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is observed in the nitride compounds. The lattice parameters and magnetic properties of R2Fe17Nx, R2Fe14BNx and RTiFe11Nx are reported for R ≡ Y, SmandNd.

Abstract:Stabilizing the 1-12 phase with cerium was possible using a special heat treatment. The structural and magnetic properties of Ce(Fe,M)12 and their nitrides, for M=Ti, V, Cr, Mo, etc., were investigated using x-ray-diffraction and magnetic measurements. The effects of interstitial nitrogen atoms on lattice parameters, Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy are reported. A profound change was found on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. As an example, in the case of CeMo2Fe10Nx, the easy magnetization direction changes from c axis to the basal plane depending on the nitrogen content x.

Abstract:In this study alloys with stoichiometry of R2Fe17 and R10Fe90-xSix (x = 0, 10, 15, 20) (R = Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) have been prepared. Structural transition from the ordered rhombohedral (OR) Th2Zn17-type structure and the ordered hexagonal (OH) Th2Ni17-type structure to their disordered structures (DR and DH) has been observed according to the XRD patterns. The lattice parameters were obtained by Rietveld analysis and based on the changing characteristic of the parameters, these samples are divided into two categories: alloys with R = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and alloys with R = Y, Gd, Td, Dy, Ho, Er. The lattice parameters of the two categories show different changing behavior. For example, from R2Fe17 to R10Fe90, the lattice parameters a decrease and c increase for the latter category, whereas for the former the lattice parameters a and c nearly have no change. In addition, increase of the ratio c/a has been found with increasing Fe or Si content, indicating the introduction of extra Fe dumbbells into the crystal cells, forming the DR or DH intermetallic compounds of R2-y(Fe,Si)(17+2y). The obtained samples with disordered structure have shown better stability than the TbCu7-type metastable materials and the higher Fe concentration gives promise of higher magnetization. The mixed-rare-earth effect has also been studied in the (Ce,R)(10)Fe75Si15 alloys and transition between the DR and DH structures has been realized by changing the mixed R-type or adjusting the Ce/R ratio. As for the magnetic properties, the Curie temperatures are increased remarkably by the introduction of Si and the saturation magnetizations of R10Fe90-xSix are often higher than that of the R2Fe17 alloys.

Abstract:An investigation of the structural and vibrational properties of RFe12−xTax (R=Tb, Dy, Ho) compounds has been performed by a series of interatomic pair potentials obtained through the lattice inversion method. Calculated results show Ta atoms can stabilize RFe12−xTax with ThMn12-type structure, and Ta atoms substitute for Fe with a strong preference for the 8i sites. The phase stability of the intermetallics RFe12−xTax is tested by many means including random atom shift, global deformation and high temperature disturbance under the control of the pair potentials. The calculated lattice parameters are corresponding to the experimental results. In particular, the phonon densities of states for RFe11.5Ta0.5 are first evaluated. A qualitative analysis is carried out with the relevant potentials for the vibrational modes, which makes it possible to predict some properties related to lattice vibration.
