Abstract:The “prince of the astronomers of our age” — such was the compliment that the late fifteenth-century scribes and printers of Johannes Regiomontanus’s Ephemerides paid him. With the notable exception of Girolamo Cardano in the sixteenth century, most scholars since then have agreed, and rightly so. His 896-page volume of daily planetary positions covered an entire generation (1476–1506), and rested on a staggering number of calculations, more of which also underlay Regiomontanus’s calendars and tables. These works were all important tools for the practising astrologer and even the occasional navigator (Columbus famously owned a copy of the Ephemerides). In the realm of theory, Regiomontanus’s Epitome of the Almagest (c. 1462; printed 1496) had also given his contemporaries a clear and thorough guide to Ptolemy’s fundamental text of mathematical astronomy. On the force of such production, Regiomontanus with good reason has long ranked as the archetypical mathematical astronomer. Pierre Duhem saw him as one of the sensible astronomers. Unlike Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo, who worried about the true structure of the cosmos, Regiomontanus focused on “saving the phenomena”, not on attempting to explain them. In the mould of Ptolemy, he was an astronomer concerned, like the Almagest itself, with predicting planetary positions ever more precisely and with improving the mathematical models that would produce them. Sensibly, he had no interest in the misguided causal enterprise associated with natural philosophical concerns. In its broad outlines, this picture of Regiomontanus was, and probably remains, the dominant one among non-specialists — witness the recent recasting of Duhem’s outlook in absolute terms: there is “not a trace of infusion of philosophical realism in Regiomontanus’s works”. In fact, such traces have been available in printed documents, evidently unread, for decades and even centuries. But the growing manuscript evidence for Regiomontanus’s physical concerns and philosophical realism goes well beyond “traces”: they were the presupposition for his work, and the rationale for his decisions. After pointing briefly to a few accessible symptoms of the physical side of Regiomontanus’s thinking, this paper samples some of the extensive evidence from his unpublished “Defence of Theon against George of Trebizond”. From the many possibilities in that vast work, I present three illustrative passages. The first, from Book 7, offers a glimpse of Regiomontanus’s views on celestial motion and shows his familiarity with and reliance upon the late medieval science of motion. The second, from Book 9, touches briefly on the order of the planets. The third, from Book 12, provides a physical context for his famous analysis of the second anomaly of the inferior planets JHA, xxxviii (2007)
