Abstract:Ganymede's aurora are the product of complex interactions between its intrinsic magnetosphere and the surrounding Jovian plasma environment and can be used to derive both atmospheric composition and density. In this study, we analyzed a time-series of Ganymede's optical aurora taken with Keck I/HIRES during eclipse by Jupiter on 2021-06-08 UTC, one day after the Juno flyby of Ganymede. The data had sufficient signal-to-noise in individual 5-minute observations to allow for the first high cadence analysis of the spatial distribution of the aurora brightness and the ratio between the 630.0 and 557.7 nm disk-integrated auroral brightnesses -- a quantity diagnostic of the relative abundances of O, O$_2$ and H$_2$O in Ganymede's atmosphere. We found that the hemisphere closer to the centrifugal equator of Jupiter's magnetosphere (where electron number density is highest) was up to twice as bright as the opposing hemisphere. The dusk (trailing) hemisphere, subjected to the highest flux of charged particles from Jupiter's magnetosphere, was also consistently almost twice as bright as the dawn (leading) hemisphere. We modeled emission from simulated O$_2$ and H$_2$O atmospheres during eclipse and found that if Ganymede hosts an H$_2$O sublimation atmosphere in sunlight, it must collapse on a faster timescale than expected to explain its absence in our data given our current understanding of Ganymede's surface properties.

Abstract:Intensities of ∼1–10MeV relativistic electrons in several energy channels of the high-energy telescope (HET) on Ulysses increase dramatically during its flybys of Jupiter in 1992 and 2004. Perpendicular diffusion coefficients of these particles are derived by fitting the spatial profile of Jovian electron intensity to a diffusion-convection model of particle transport. It is found that the latitudinal diffusion coefficient during the 2004 Jupiter flyby has to be enhanced from its value during the 1992 Jupiter flyby and it is also enhanced relative to the radial perpendicular diffusion. Such an enhancement of latitudinal particle transport was implied previously through the observations of Jovian electrons, cosmic rays and solar energetic particles at high heliographic latitudes, and now this requirement extends further to low latitude region of the heliosphere. Energy dependence of the perpendicular diffusion coefficient is obtained quite precisely through the variation in the slope of energy spectrum of Jovian electrons. The perpendicular diffusion coefficient increases with energy, which can put a tight constraint on models of the particle transport coefficient. The newest nonlinear guiding center (NLGC) theory of perpendicular diffusion is consistent with this observation, but only when it is combined with a parallel diffusion coefficient from the quasilinear theory in a slab magnetic turbulence without dynamic damping.

Long term variability of Jupiter's northern auroral 8-micron CH4 emissions

Abstract:We present a study of the long term variability of Jupiter's mid-infrared auroral CH4 emissions. 7.7 - 7.9 micron images of Jupiter recorded by Earth-based telescopes over the last three decades were collated in order to quantify the magnitude and timescales over which the northern auroral hotspot's CH4 emissions varies. We find that the ratio of the radiance of the poleward northern auroral emissions to a lower-latitude zonal mean, henceforth 'Relative Poleward Radiance' or RPR, exhibits a 37% variability over a range of timescales. We searched for patterns of variability in order to test whether seasonally-varying solar insolation, the 11-year solar cycle, or short-term solar wind variability at Jupiter's magnetopause could explain the observed evolution. The variability of the RPR exhibits a weak (r < 0.2) correlation with the solar insolation received at Jupiter's high-northern latitudes. This rules out the hypothesis suggested in previous work (e.g. Sinclair et al., 2017a) that shortwave solar heating of aurorally-produced haze particles is the dominant heating mechanism in the lower stratosphere. We also find the variability exhibits negligible (r < 0.18) correlation with the monthly-mean sunspot number, which rules out variability associated with the solar cycle. On shorter timescales, we find moderate correlations of the RPR with solar wind conditions at Jupiter in the preceding days before images were recorded. For example, we find correlations of r = 0.45 and r = 0.51 of the RPR with the mean and standard deviation on the solar wind dynamical pressure in the preceding 7 days. The moderate correlation suggests that either: 1) only a subset of solar wind compressions lead to brighter, poleward, CH4 emissions and/or 2) a subset of CH4 emission brightening events are driven by internal magnetospheric and independent of the solar wind.

A high spatial and spectral resolution study of Jupiter's mid-infrared auroral emissions and their response to a solar wind compression

Abstract:We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of Jupiter's mid-to-high latitudes using Gemini-North/TEXES (Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph) on March 17-19, 2017. These observations capture Jupiter's hydrocarbon auroral emissions before, during and after the arrival of a solar wind compression on March 18th, which highlights the coupling between the polar stratosphere and external space environment. In comparing observations on March 17th and 19th, we observe a brightening of the CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_2$ and C$_2$H$_4$ emissions in regions spatially coincident with the northern, duskside main auroral emission (henceforth, MAE). In inverting the spectra to derive atmospheric information, we determine that the duskside brightening results from an upper stratospheric (p < 0.1 mbar/z > 200 km) heating (e.g. $\Delta T$ = 9.1 $\pm$ 2.1 K at 9 $\mu$bar at 67.5$^\circ$N, 162.5$^\circ$W) with negligible heating at deeper pressures. Our interpretation is that the arrival of the solar wind enhancement drove magnetospheric dynamics through compression and/or viscous interactions on the flank. These dynamics accelerated currents and/or generated higher Poynting fluxes, which ultimately warmed the atmosphere through Joule heating and ion-neutral collisions. Poleward of the southern MAE, temperature retrievals demonstrate that auroral-related heating penetrates as deep as the 10-mbar level, in contrast to poleward of the northern MAE, where heating is only observed as deep as $\sim$3 mbar. We suggest this results from the south having higher Pedersen conductivities, and therefore stronger currents and acceleration of the neutrals, as well as the poleward heating overlapping with the apex of Jupiter's circulation thereby inhibiting efficient horizontal mixing/advection.

Abstract:Abstract In Jupiter's middle magnetosphere, debate remains on the controlling physics of electron acceleration to the ultrarelativistic regime. Some local‐time asymmetric processes regulating MeV electrons may have their hold across electron spectra, leaving imprints down to 10–100s keV energies. Spectra at these lower energies can be measured with finite energy resolution, which is hardly achieved for MeV electrons. We investigate 10–100s keV electron spectra using Galileo measurements. We show that at 15–20 R J , the power‐law exponents exhibit a previously unexpected dawn‐dusk asymmetry. This asymmetry is more prominent for 100s‐keV spectra, persistent but enhanced from 1996 to 2001. These match the theory of transport driven by a dawn‐to‐dusk electric field. Contrary to past expectations of dawn‐to‐dusk electric field at Io plasma torus (IPT) extending outward from 6 R J , the origin of the field we infer may be completely different, despite its orientation and impacts on electron energization similar with the IPT one.

Abstract:Auroral emissions are a reflection of magnetospheric processes, and, at Jupiter, it is not entirely certain how the morphology of the UV main emission (ME) varies with magnetospheric compression or the strength of the central current sheet. This work leverages the observations from Juno-UVS to link ME variability with magnetospheric states. Novel arc-detection techniques are used to determine new reference ovals for the ME from perijoves 1 through 54, in both hemispheres, and analyse how the size and shape of the ME vary compared to this reference oval. The morphology and brightness of the ME vary in local time: the dawn-side ME is typically expanded and the dusk-side ME typically contracted compared to the reference oval, and the dusk-side ME being typically twice as bright as the dawn-side ME. Both the northern and southern ME, and the day-side and night-side ME, expand and contract from their reference ovals synchronously, which indicates that the variable size of the ME is caused by a process occurring throughout the jovian magnetosphere. The poleward latitudinal shift of the auroral footprint of Ganymede correlates with the poleward motion of the ME, whereas a similar relation is not present for the footprint of Io. Additionally, the expansion of the ME correlates well with an increase in magnetodisc current. These two results suggest that a changing current-sheet magnetic field is partially responsible for the variable size of the ME. Finally, magnetospheric compression is linked to a global ME contraction and brightening, though this brightening occurs predominantly in the day-side ME. This observation, and the observation that the dusk-side ME is typically brighter than the dawn-side ME, stands in contrast to the modelled and observed behaviour of field-aligned currents and thus weakens the theoretical link between field-aligned currents and the generation of the auroral ME.

Comparative Planetology of Magnetic Effects in Ultrahot Jupiters: Trends in High Resolution Spectroscopy

Abstract:Ultrahot Jupiters (UHJs), being the hottest class of exoplanets known, provide a unique laboratory for testing atmospheric interactions with internal planetary magnetic fields at a large range of temperatures. Thermal ionization of atmospheric species on the dayside of these planets results in charged particles becoming embedded in the planet's mostly neutral wind. The charges will resist flow across magnetic field lines as they are dragged around the planet and ultimately alter the circulation pattern of the atmosphere. We model this process to study this effect on high resolution emission and transmission spectra in order to identify observational signatures of the magnetic circulation regime that exist across multiple UHJs. Using a state-of-the-art kinematic MHD/active drag approach in a 3D atmospheric model, we simulate three different ultrahot Jupiters with and without magnetic effects. We post-process these models to generate high resolution emission and transmission spectra and explore trends in net Doppler shift as a function of phase. In emission spectra, we find that the net Doppler shift before and after secondary eclipse can be influenced by the presence of magnetic drag and wavelength choice. Trends in transmission spectra show our active drag models consistently produce a unique shape in their Doppler shift trends that differs from the models without active drag. This work is a critical theoretical step to understanding how magnetic fields shape the atmospheres of UHJs and provides some of the first predictions in high resolution spectroscopy for observing these effects.

Ionospheric conductances at the giant planets of the Solar System:a comparative study of ionization sources and the impact of meteoric ions

Abstract:The dynamics of giant planet magnetospheres is controlled by a complex interplay between their fast rotation, their interaction with the solar wind, and their diverse internal plasma and momentum sources. In the ionosphere, the Hall and Pedersen conductances are two key parameters that regulate the intensity of currents coupling the magnetosphere and the ionosphere, and the rate of angular momentum transfer and power carried by these currents. We perform a comparative study of Hall and Pedersen conductivities and conductances in the four giant planets of our Solar System - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. We use a generic ionospheric model (restraining the studied ions to H3+, CH5+, and meteoric ions) to study the dependence of conductances on the structure and composition of these planets' upper atmospheres and on the main ionization sources (photoionization, ionization by precipitating electrons, and meteoroid ablation). After checking that our model reproduces the conclusions of Nakamura et al. (2022, <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2022JA030312" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>) at Jupiter, i.e. the contribution of meteoric ions to the height-integrated conductances is non-negligible, we show that this contribution could also be non-negligible at Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, compared with ionization processes caused by precipitating electrons of energies lower than a few keV (typical energies on these planets). However, because of their weaker magnetic field, the conductive layer of these planets is higher than the layer where meteoric ions are mainly produced, limiting their role in magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.

Abstract:Although mass and energy in Jupiter's magnetosphere mostly come from the innermost Galilean moon Io's volcanic activities, solar wind perturbations can play crucial roles in releasing the magnetospheric energy and powering aurorae in Jupiter's polar regions. The systematic response of aurora to solar wind compression remains poorly understood. Here we report the analysis of a set of auroral images with contemporaneous in situ magnetopause detections. We distinguish two types of auroral enhancements: a transient localized one and a long-lasting global one. We show that only the latter systematically appears under a compressed magnetopause, while the localized auroral expansion could occur during an expanded magnetopause. Moreover, we directly examine previous theories on how solar wind compressions enhance auroral emissions. Our results demonstrate that auroral morphologies can be diagnostic of solar wind conditions at planets when in situ measurements are not possible.
Lessons from Hubble and Spitzer: 1D Self-Consistent Model Grids for 19 Hot Jupiter Emission Spectra

Abstract:We present a population-level analysis of the dayside thermal emission spectra of 19 planets observed with Hubble WFC3 and Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 microns, spanning equilibrium temperatures 1200-2700 K and 0.7-10.5 Jupiter masses. We use grids of planet-specific 1D, cloud-free, radiative-convective-thermochemical equilibrium models (1D-RCTE) combined with a Bayesian inference framework to estimate atmospheric metallicity, the carbon-to-oxygen ratio, and day-to-night heat redistribution. In general, we find that the secondary eclipse data cannot reject the physics encapsulated within the 1D-RCTE assumption parameterized with these three variables. We find a large degree of scatter in atmospheric metallicities, with no apparent trend, and carbon-to-oxygen ratios that are mainly consistent with solar or subsolar values but do not exhibit population agreement. Together, these indicate either (1) formation pathways vary over the hot and ultra-hot Jupiter population and/or (2) more accurate composition measurements are needed to identify trends. We also find a broad scatter in derived dayside temperatures that do not demonstrate a trend with equilibrium temperature. Like with composition estimates, this suggests either significant variability in climate drivers over the population and/or more precise dayside temperature measurements are needed to identify a trend. We anticipate that 1D-RCTE models will continue to provide valuable insights into the nature of exoplanet atmospheres in the era of JWST.

Modeling the high-resolution emission spectra of clear and cloudy non-transiting hot Jupiters

Abstract:The advent of high-resolution spectroscopy as a method for exoplanet atmospheric characterization has expanded our capability to study non-transiting planets, increasing the number of planets accessible for observation. Many of the most favorable targets for atmospheric characterization are hot Jupiters, where we expect large spatial variation in physical conditions such as temperature, wind speed, and cloud coverage, making viewing geometry important. Three-dimensional models have generally simulated observational properties of hot Jupiters assuming edge-on viewing, which neglects planets without near edge-on orbits. As the first investigation of how orbital inclination manifests in high-resolution emission spectra, we use a General Circulation Model to simulate the atmospheric structure of Upsilon Andromedae b, a non-transiting hot Jupiter. In order to accurately capture scattering from clouds, we implement a generalized two-stream radiative transfer routine for inhomogeneous multiple scattering atmospheres. We compare models with and without clouds, as cloud coverage intensifies spatial variations. Cloud coverage increases both the net Doppler shifts and the variation of the continuum flux amplitude over the course of the planet's orbit. As orbital inclination decreases, four key features also decrease in both the clear and cloudy models: 1) the average continuum flux level, 2) the amplitude of the variation in continuum with orbital phase, 3) net Doppler shifts of spectral lines, and 4) Doppler broadening in the spectra. Models capable of treating inhomogeneous cloud coverage and different viewing geometries are critical in understanding high-resolution emission spectra, enabling an additional avenue to investigate these extreme atmospheres.

Abstract:Extreme ultraviolet spectral observations of the Jovian planetary system made during the Voyager 2 encounter have extended our knowledge of many of the phenomena and physical processes discovered by the Voyager 1 ultraviolet spectrometer. In the 4 months between encounters, the radiation from Io's plasma torus has increased in intensity by a factor of about 2. This change was accompanied by a decrease in plasma temperature of about 30 percent. The high-latitude auroral zones have been positively associated with the magnetic projection of the plasma torus onto the planet. Emission in molecular hydrogen bands has been detected from the equatorial regions of Jupiter, indicating planetwide electron precipitation. Hydrogen Lyman alpha from the dark side of the planet has been measured at an intensity of about 1 kilorayleigh. An observation of the occultation of alpha Leonis by Jupiter was carried out successfully and the data are being analyzed in detail.

Abstract:We summarize Jupiter's ultraviolet (UV) auroral response to solar wind dynamic pressure variations during Juno's approach to Jupiter in 2016. The response time of Jupiter's aurora to external drivers has thus far been unknown owing to a sparsity of upstream in situ solar wind measurements. Combining the Juno solar wind observations with continuous UV aurora data obtained by Hisaki EXCEED (Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscope for Exospheric Dynamics) and Juno UV spectrograph, the UV aurora brightenings in response to three major shock arrivals showed time lags of 10–15 hr. These time lags are longer than the time required for ballistic propagation of the shocks by the solar wind. In addition to that puzzle, while an enhancement in the UV auroral power was observed with an increase in dynamic pressure to ~0.03 nPa, no associated brightening was observed with a dynamic pressure elevation of >0.1 nPa. These imply that internal magnetospheric aspects need to be taken into consideration to fully resolve the issue.

Abstract:Observations of the optical extreme ultraviolet spectrum of the Jupiter planetary system during the Voyager 1 encounter have revealed previously undetected physical processes of significant proportions. Bright emission lines of S III, S IV, and O III indicating an electron temperature of 10(5) K have been identified in preliminary analyses of the Io plasma torus spectrum. Strong auroral atomic and molecular hydrogen emissions have been observed in the polar regions of Jupiter near magnetic field lines that map the torus into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The observed resonance scattering of solar hydrogen Lyman alpha by the atmosphere of Jupiter and the solar occultation experiment suggest a hot thermosphere (>/= 1000 K) wvith a large atomic hydrogen abundance. A stellar occultation by Ganymede indicates that its atmosphere is at most an exosphere.

Abstract:Jupiter's satellite auroral footprints are a consequence of the interaction between the Jovian magnetic field with co-rotating iogenic plasma and the Galilean moons. The disturbances created near the moons propagate as Alfvén waves along the magnetic field lines. The position of the moons is therefore "Alfvénically" connected to their respective auroral footprint. The angular separation from the instantaneous magnetic footprint can be estimated by the so-called lead angle. That lead angle varies periodically as a function of orbital longitude, since the time for the Alfvén waves to reach the Jovian ionosphere varies accordingly. Using spectral images of the Main Alfvén Wing auroral spots collected by Juno-UVS during the first forty-three orbits, this work provides the first empirical model of the Io, Europa and Ganymede equatorial lead angles for the northern and southern hemispheres. Alfvén travel times between the three innermost Galilean moons to Jupiter's northern and southern hemispheres are estimated from the lead angle measurements. We also demonstrate the accuracy of the mapping from the Juno magnetic field reference model (JRM33) at the completion of the prime mission for M-shells extending to at least 15RJ . Finally, we shows how the added knowledge of the lead angle can improve the interpretation of the moon-induced decametric emissions.

Energy mapping of Jupiter's auroral electrons from Juno/UVS data using a new H2 UV emission model

Abstract:Juno, which studies the Jovian system, continues to expand our knowledge of Jupiter's magnetosphere and its environment. Thanks to onboard instruments such as Jupiter Energetic Particle Detector Instrument (JEDI) and Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE), in situ measurements have allowed us to derive a realistic representation of charged particle energy distributions precipitating in the auroral regions. Because of the distance between Juno's measurement location and the position of impact of the charged particles, where auroral emissions are produced, these energetic distributions of magnetospheric particles are likely to be affected by various phenomena such as wave-particle interactions on their way from Juno to the atmosphere. These processes can accelerate or decelerate the particles, changing their average energies. Hence, the energy distributions of particles measured at Juno's altitude are likely different from those at auroral altitudes. In this study we develop a UV emission model, combined with an electron transport model, that allows us to relate the auroral emission spectra of H$_ $ molecules with the energy distribution of impinging electrons. Thanks to observations of the Jovian aurora by the Ultraviolet Spectrograph (UVS) on board Juno, we determined the characteristic energies of electrons precipitating in auroral regions during perijove 32. We modeled the relationship between color ratio (CR) and the characteristic energy of precipitating electrons. Initially, we considered mono-energetic electron fluxes. In a second step, we considered fluxes governed by a kappa distribution. We derived characteristic energy maps for electrons precipitating in Jupiter's auroral regions. In comparison with similar previous studies based on Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board Hubble Space Telescope (HST/STIS) observations, we find that modeling the CR with a mono-energetic distribution leads to a systematic underestimation of the average energy of electrons precipitating in the auroral regions by a factor of 3-5. In this study we show that it is possible to derive a more realistic estimate of electron energy flux distributions at auroral altitudes.

Abstract:Context. Jovian auroras, the most powerful in the Solar System, result from the interaction between the magnetosphere and atmosphere of Jupiter. While the horizontal morphology of these phenomena has been widely studied, their vertical structure, determined by the penetration depth of the magnetospheric electron into the auroral regions, remains relatively unexplored. Previous observations, including those from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), have addressed this question to a limited extent. Aims. In this study we aim to map the vertical structure of Jovian auroral emissions. Methods. Using observations from Juno's UltraViolet Spectrograph (UVS), we examined the vertical structure of the auroral emissions. Building on a recent study of auroral energy mapping based on UVS observations that mapped the average energy of precipitating electrons in the Jovian auroral regions, we find a relationship between this average energy and the volume emission rate (VER) of H 2 for two types of electron energy distributions: monoenergetic and a kappa distribution with κ = 2.5. Results. Using brightness maps, we derived the 3D VER structure of Jovian auroras in both northern and southern regions, across multiple spacecraft perijoves (PJs). By considering the example of PJ11, we find that the average altitude of the VER peak in the polar emission region is approximately ~250 km for the monoenergetic distribution case and ~190 km for kappa distribution case. In the main emission region, we find that the average altitude of the VER peak is approximately ~260 km for the case of monoenergetic distribution and ~197 km for kappa distribution case. For the other PJs, we obtained results that are very similar to those of PJ11. Conclusions. Our findings are, on average, consistent with measurements from the Galileo probe and the HST observations. This study contributes to a better understanding of the complexity of Jovian auroras and highlights the importance of using Juno observations when probing their vertical structure. Considering the variability in the κ parameter in the auroral region, we also studied the impact of this variability on the vertical structure of the auroral emission. This sensitivity study reveals that the influence of the κ parameter on our results was very weak. However, the impact of the κ variability on the VER amplitude shows that there is an influence on the thermal structure and chemical composition of the atmosphere in the auroral regions.
