Abstract:A convenient method was developed to synthesize potassium borohydride by a mechano-chemical reaction of saline hydrides with dehydrated borates with a planetary ball mill. Among the tested saline hydrides, MgH2 was the most effective reactant for borohydride formation. In order to improve the borohydride yield, it was necessary to add an excessive amount of MgH2. When a 35% excess of MgH2 was added, potassium borohydride yield reached 100%. The borohydride formation was strongly dependent on the water content in reactants. When the water content in KBO2 samples was over 24.8 wt.% (equivalent to KBO2·1.5H2O), no borate was converted into borohydride by the mechano-chemical reaction.

Abstract:A convenient method was developed to synthesize NaBH4 by the reaction of MgH2 with Na2B4O7 through ball milling at room temperature. In order to improve the sodium borohydride yield, Na compounds were added to compensate the Na insufficiency in reactants when MgH2 instead of NaH was used as the reducing agent. It was found that Na2CO3 addition was better than NaOH or Na2O2 addition in increasing the borohydride yield.

Abstract:Sodium metaborate is a by-product from deoxidation of sodium borohydride. The sodium borohydride can be obtained by deoxidation of the aforementioned sodium metaborate as raw material in the presence of metalic sodium and quartzite. The isopropyl amine is used as extractive and purifying agent to give the final sodium borohydride with high purity and yield of 47.8%. The recovery of the extraction agent can reach 85%.

Abstract:In this work, we explored the possibility of NaBH4 synthesis when Mg reacted with hydrous sodium borates under hydrogen. It was found that Mg could react with the water in molten hydrous borates to form MgO and release hydrogen, which can be used for NaBH4 synthesis. Then remained Mg would react with formed anhydrous borate to form NaBH4. NaBO2 conversion rate was decreased with increase of the crystalline water content in the hydrous sodium borates. Based on experimental results, a mechanism of NaBH4 formation when Mg reacted with hydrous sodium borates was suggested.

Abstract:In this paper, sequential experiments were designed to explore the possibility of sodium borohydride synthesis by reaction of sodium borates with Al and hydrogen. It was found that NaBH4 cannot be formed by reaction of NaBO2 with Al and hydrogen but can be formed by reaction of Na4B2O5 with Al and hydrogen. NaBH4 formation was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analyses and morphology observations. It was found that Na2O in Na4B2O5 played an important role in NaBH4 formation due to the depression of Al2O3 formation. The highest sodium borohydride yield (65.8%) was obtained by reaction of a mixture of Na4B2O5, NaBO2, and Na2O with Al and hydrogen. However, NaBH4 formation was dependent upon the physical state of sodium borates. When sodium borates melted, NaBH4 formation was retarded due to the difficulty of hydrogen diffusion to Al surfaces.

Abstract:New attempts were made to produce alkali metal borohydrides by reacting sodium borates with hydrogen and Al, Si, or Ti. In addition, alkali oxide additions to the aforementioned mixtures were investigated to determine their effects on BH4- formation. It was found that BH4- was not formed by the reaction of NaBO2 with hydrogen and Al, Si, or Ti but can be formed after adding alkali oxides. In general, it was reconfirmed that alkali oxide addition played a very important role in BH4- formation. For example, when K2O was added to sodium borate, KBH4 and not NaBH4 was formed.

Abstract:Pyrolyses of tetraethylammonium and tetrabutylammonium borohydrides were performed. The obtained products were examined by 11B NMR spectroscopy. It was shown that formation of higher boranes is extremely sensitive to the presence of water vapor (2.7-2.8 kPa partial pressure). The pyrolysis conditions of Et4NBH4 and Bu4NBH4 suitable for synthesis of salts containing B3H8- and B12H122- were found and optimized. High-yield syntheses of Bu4NB3H8 and (Bu4N)2B12H12 with were developed.

Abstract:Owing to its properties, boron carbide has been applied in scientific and industrial fields. For this reason, B4C powders should be characterized by high purity and homogeneity in grain size and shape. In this study, boron carbide was prepared using precursors obtained using a hydrothermal method, and the grain morphology of the product was investigated. Boric acid and the saccharides glucose, fructose, inulin, and sorbitol were used as the precursors. Two precursor dehydration methods, freeze-drying and recrystallization, were compared. The precursors were subjected to DLS grain size and FT-IR spectrophotometric studies, and SEM observations of the precursors and products were performed, confirming that boron carbide powders could be successfully synthesized.

Abstract:Hydrogen and ammonia are both potential energy carriers being considered for large scale energy transport. Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been widely applied as a potential solid-state hydrogen storage material. It can produce hydrogen gas and sodium metaborate (NaBO2) after hydrolysis with water at room temperature. The regeneration of NaBH4 from NaBO2 could significantly reduce the cost of NaBH4 and enable its wide-spread industrial use. In this work, we demonstrate a simple method for regenerating NaBH4 from NaBO2·4H2O using Mg2N3, which combines NaBH4 production with NH3 gas production in a single step at room temperature. NaBH4 is successfully synthesized from NaBO2·4H2O using the Mg3N2 reducing agent via ball milling under a hydrogen atmosphere. NaBH4 is formed at a 76.6% yield by planetary ball milling at 600 rpm under 40 bar hydrogen for 12 h. NH3 gas is also formed, which can be easily separated from the solid products. Therefore, this one-step process could produce two different types of carbon-free hydrogen carriers suitable for energy export from renewable sources.

This strategy is suitable for a broad range of common aroyl chlorides and boronic acids. The synthetic utility is highlighted in the direct late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products capitalizing on the presence of carboxylic acid moiety. Extensive mechanistic and DFT studies provide key insight into the reaction mechanism and high decarbonylative cross-coupling selectivity.

Abstract:The use of sodium borohydride as a means for hydrogen generation has focused on the base-stabilized hydrolysis reaction, while literature for the methanolysis of sodium borohydride remains scarce. Sodium borohydride methanolysis is an alternative for hydrogen production from sodium borohydride and has a number of advantages over hydrolysis reactions in terms of by-product handling. Previous studies have shown that the presence of water in methanol significantly retards the rate of hydrogen evolution from NaBH4. This article reports the production of hydrogen from NaBH4 using rigorously dried methanol. In addition, the solid-state structure of the methanolysis by-product is reported, which lends pertinent information for its hydrolysis for methanol recovery. Also reported is the solid-state structure of the hydrolysis by-product.
Efficient Synthesis of Sodium Borohydride: Balancing Reducing Agents with Intrinsic Hydrogen Source in Hydrated Borax

Abstract:Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been identified as one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials; however, it is still challenging to produce NaBH4 with low cost and high efficiency, which are largely determined by the sources of boron and hydrogen and reducing agents used. Herein, we report an economical method to produce NaBH4 by ball milling hydrated borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O and/or Na2B4O7·5H2O) with different reducing agents such as MgH2, Mg, and NaH under ambient conditions. The direct use of natural hydrated borax avoids the dehydration process (at 600 °C) and consequently reduces cost and improves overall energy efficiency. A high yield of 93.1% can be achieved for a short ball mill duration (3.5 h) for Na2B4O7·5H2O-NaH-MgH2 system. In this system, H2 is generated in situ which subsequently reacts with Mg forming MgH2. Low cost Mg is therefore employed to replace the majority of MgH2, leading to an attractive yield of 78.6%. To further reduce the cost of raw materials and improve the utilization of hydrogen source in the hydrated borax, Na2B4O7·10H2O is used to partially substitute for Na2B4O7·5H2O, leading to a complete replacement of MgH2. Compared with literature results, the optimized recipe features low cost and high efficiency since it utilizes hydrogen from the hydrated water in natural borax and avoids high temperatures. Abstract:Alkali metal borohydrides present a rich source of energy dense materials of boron and hydrogen, however their potential in propellants has been hitherto untapped. Potassium borohydride is a promising fuel with high gravimetric energy density and relatively low sensitivity to air and moisture. Problems arise due to the dehydrogenation of the borohydride on heating with minimal energy release. Common methods to extract both boron and hydrogen by means of borane species involve direct reaction of boron trifluoride species with alkali borohydrides. However, these methods face storage and safety issues due to rapid release of diborane on mixing the reactants. We propose a method of diborane release through controlled release of boron trifluoride by means of a tetrafluoroborate based ionic liquid. The trifluoride is released from the ionic liquid at elevated temperatures and enables safe mixture of the reactants at room temperature. It was found that the reaction between borohydride and boron trifluoride proceeds well above room temperature with potassium borohydride releasing diborane and potassium fluoride. The reaction pathway shows a primary reaction releasing diborane and potassium fluoride and a second less energy efficient step leading to the formation of potassium tetrafluoroborate. A 3d printed propellant formulation was also tested.

Abstract:An advanced process for the production of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a hydrogen storage material was developed, which applied the dynamic hydriding and dehydriding behaviors of protide (H-) in Mg-H system under transitional temperature conditions.An abundant natural resource named borax (Na2B4O7-10H(2)O) and the anhydrous sodium metaborate (NaBO2) recovered from the "spent fuel" as NaBO2-4H(2)O were used as the starting material in the present process. Powder-state Mg played an important role in the transitional hydriding and dehydriding process where the gaseous hydrogen was converted to protide at the extreme surface of Mg to form NaBH4 in exchange with the simultaneous transition of oxygen in NaBO2 to form MgO.In the present process, the protide as the most reactive state among the four states of hydrogen is applied for the synthesis of NaBH4, which can exist in metal-hydrogen complexes, such as NaAlH4 and NaBH4.The NaBH4 yield was reached higher than 90% by a single batch process but was found to be largely dependent on the rate of temperature change and the particle size, i.e., the specific surface area of Mg particles. Abstract:Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been a material of interest for many years in developing metal boride complexes and shows a great deal of potential as a hydrogen storage material. Though many have used various additives as catalysts to weaken the bonds within NaBH4 to create a more energetically favorable material, very little is understood about how the borohydride interacts with and changes the additives being incorporated. This work uses ball milling to incorporate calcium chloride (CaCl2) into NaBH4. Using several x-ray techniques, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy, this study shows not only that the salt diffuses into NaBH4 but describes how the borohydride changes the additive itself. In gaining a stronger understanding of what happens to the additives needed to weaken the borohydride bonds, future researchers may have an easier time selecting the appropriate additive to create a borohydride complex that will meet their needs.

A Simple and Efficient Preparation of High-Purity and High-Yield Unsolvated Lithium Dodecaborate

Abstract:We present a new and simple approach for the synthesis of lithium dodecaborate (Li2B12H12) in high purity and high yield, based on the reaction between borane dimethyl sulfide complex (DMS·BH3) and lithium borohydride (LiBH4) in glymes (monoglyme or diglyme). The reaction can conveniently be performed either in a Schlenk flask with or without reflux, or in an autoclave. This strategy exhibits various advantages over existing methods, including high product purity, high reaction yields (up to 96%), and operational simplicity. The enclosed system provided by an autoclave is shown to be more favorable for the synthesis of the B12H122– anion and enables obtaining the highest yields. The reaction mechanism has been investigated by 11B NMR spectroscopy, revealing a stepwise formation of B2H7−, B3H8−, B9H14−, B11H14− and B11H132− intermediates. This synthesis method is extended to the M2B12H12 (M = Li, Na, K) series, yielding metal dodecaboranes coordinated with glymes, characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. We show that glymes can be removed through simple exchange with weaker coordinating solvents like DMSO or H2O, followed by heating under vacuum.

Abstract:A solvent-free, operationally simple, and chemoselective mechanochemical method for t-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) deprotection is described. In a planetary ball mill, N-Boc groups from protected heterocycles, amides, and anilines, as well as O-Boc groups from carbonates, can be removed selectively, using basic alumina. This high-yielding protocol avoids tedious extraction and column chromatography.
