On the China's Development from Practical Reason to Practical Wisdom

Abstract:Pragmatic reason, developed through Chinese traditional thinking and culture in the long history of the struggle against the environment, is in essence the experiential reason.In addition, pragmatic reason is often regarded as historical reason which accounts for the majority of the human experience.Meanwhile, pragmatic reason is destined to give great emphasis upon educa-tion as experience is, to a greater extent, transmitted through education.The major disadvantages of pragmatic reason are: be eager for instant benefits with short-sightedness, be resigned to the middling state and often go with the stream, and insufficient experience with indistinct ideas.The concept of“practical wisdom” is first proposed in Volume 6 of Aristotle's The Nicomach-ean Ethics, which explores a different philosophical orientation from that of Socrates and Plato.It mainly refers to the action wisdom in the field of politics and ethics in which the doer is able to make a rapid and accurate decision in a changeable environ-ment and put it into a reasonable action.As a matter of fact, practical wisdom has been developed into one of the most important philosophical theories in the contemporary western philosophy with substantial advancements of many great philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Marx, Heidegger, and etc.Therefore, it is suggested in the paper that one of the important missions of Chinese is to promote pragmatic reason into practical wisdom so as to realize the great rejuvenation of the nation.
