An Historical Perspective on the Constitution of Contemporary Chinese Political Culture

Abstract:China′s traditional political culture emphasized collectivism,ethical relations and the primacy of morality. Its greatest virtue was giving importance to human ideals and spiritual concerns;its greatest flaw was stressing personal rule and neglecting rule of law. The Cultural Revolution fully expressed the features of China′s political culture,especially the shortcomings of traditional political culture. This shows that traditional political culture exercises a profound influence over us;we must find stable,enduring,and positive elements from our own historical political culture,constituting the ‘subjective consciousness of modern political culture’ from tradition. That is,when developing a contemporary Chinese political culture we must,while stressing the spiritual ideals of Chinese political culture,inject into it the culture of rule of law.
