Abstract:A no-liquid calibration technique for electromagnetic flowmeter (EMF) is presented. The proposed method utilizes the electromagnetic measuring principle. Several differential equations for the relevant physical quantities and corresponding boundary conditions are established. A set of no-liquid calibration equipment is designed and implemented. By measuring the point-by-point magnetic induction on the boundary surface as well as the structure dimensions of EMF, the sensitivity of EMF are acquired via the numerical solution of the differential equations with measured boundary conditions. The comparison of the no-liquid and practical-flow calibration methods is carried out on two EMFs with diameter of 200 mm. The relative error of the sensitivity data determined by the two methods is less than 0.5%.

Abstract:Parshall flume is widely applied in sewage treatment plants due to its excellent performance. There are many specifications and standards related to Parshall flumes, and there may be several applicable models of Parshall flumes in the same project, which makes it difficult to control design details and select the right type. Through the actual design case of discharge metering channel of an urban sewage plant, combined with Manning-formula, the mathematical relations between the design elevation of Parshall flumes and flow quantity was analyzed under the conditions of submerged free stream and full free stream. The characteristics of two different applicable standard Parshall flumes were compared, and the relevant design key points were summarized to provide reference for similar designs in the future.

Abstract:The flowrate measurement devices or instruments in small channel are very limited.Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique and cross-correlation velocity measurement principle,a new method for flowrate measurement in millimeter-scale pipe is proposed and a new measurement device is developed.Two pairs of electronic switches are used to obtain two independent conductivity signals of the fluid.By cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity and flowrate of the fluid can be determined.As a preliminary research,flowrate measurement experiments are carried out in two pipes with the inner diameters of 3.2 mm and 5.4 mm,respectively.The experimental results show that the new proposed method based on C~4D technique for flowrate measurement is feasible and effective.

Abstract:A group of experiments designed to compare the performance between multi-electrode electromagnetic flowmeter and bi-electrode electromagnetic flowmeter proved that multi-electrode electromagnetic flowmeter outperforms bi-electrode electromagnetic flowmeter especially under the condition of non-axisymmetric flow or low velocity flow. Because the presented flowmeter is based on velocity distribution, it has high precision and stability. So it will extend the application of electromagnetic flowmeters greatly.

Abstract:Due to the mechanism of vortex flowmeter, it is susceptible to the random disturbance from the ambient. With the goal of improving the poor sensitivity and noise immunity of conventional vortex flowmeter at low-flowrate, many researchers have done lots of work, focusing on innovation about the bluff, including the geometry or combinations, and the signal processing. This paper presents an adaptive algorithm for a vortex flowmeter with dual bluff body to improve its sensitivity for low flowrate applications. In our study, we get the distance where intension of vortex getting strongest by experiment. Comparative experimental results of vortex with single bluff body, dual bluff body and dual bluff body combing self-adaption FFT verify the improvements of the flow performance at small flowrate. The measured liquid as dirty( two- phase flow,Slurry)liquid medium conditions,process fluid flow,the choice of the large diameter electromagnetic flowmeter,material of pipeline,installation instrument position of process piping installation section,and other aspects were also considered.How to earthing in field was introduced,and two several typical application cases of electromagnetic flow meter were given.

Abstract:To address the issue of measurement errors in ultrasonic water meters caused by various interfering factors during the flow calibration process, this study proposes a highly automated and intelligent ultrasonic water meter flow calibration system design. Firstly, by analyzing and studying the working principle of the water flow calibration device, and considering the actual flow calibration range, the calibration method that combines the master meter method and the dynamic weighing method is determined. To enhance the automation level of the flow calibration system, the flow calibration control algorithm is thoroughly analyzed and designed. Finally, a flow correction algorithm based on linear interpolation was designed and utilized for water meter flow calibration. Test data show that after the flow correction, the value error of the ultrasonic water meter in the "high area" is not more than 2%, in the "low area" it is not more than 3%, and the repeatability is less than 0.05%. Compared with manual calibration, the flow calibration system designed in this paper enables high-precision automated flow calibration of ultrasonic water meters, significantly enhancing detection efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract:A two-phase flow measuring device whose measurement system does not disturb the flow pattern, real-time measurement, and non-destructive measurement or non-intrusive model is a typical tool for an ideal situation. One measuring instrument that meets these criteria is an ultrasonic flow meter. Ultrasonic sensors can measure the velocity of fluid flow in pipelines. It has the advantage of high accuracy and reproducibility and does not make direct physical contact with the fluid in the pipe. Low fabrication costs and fast response make ultrasonic flowmeters widely used for two-phase flow measurements in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The void fraction or liquid holdup and velocity are the two most essential parameters for flow monitoring. The Time of Flight (ToF) method is mainly used for measurements in several ultrasonic flowmeter methods. In the present manuscript, the introductory section of this review explains the advantages of using the Time of Flight (ToF) method and its basic principles. This review also discusses research on measuring velocity and flow rate, differences in intrusive and non-intrusive measurement methods, parameters that affect ultrasonic measurements, and finally, measuring film thickness using non-intrusive methods.

Abstract:Flow control is one of the most important valve functions which can be realized using the signal obtained by flow meters. However, flow meters are not suitable for being installed on fast response systems or in compact space due to slow response and large volume. This paper proposes a computational flow feedback control method using a flow inferential measurement method and a proportional integral controller. The flow inferential measurement method uses an AdaBoost neural network to learn flow change regulation affected by spool displacement, pressure differential, and temperature with high accuracy and low overfitting. The flow calculation model is analyzed by global sensitivity analysis to find the effect proportion of each factor, and piecewise wavelet filter is used to reduce the noise effect of the key signal in the calculation. The AdaBoost neural network is found to be capable of recognizing the characteristic shapes of the flow function with an accuracy of ±2%. The controller receives the accurately calculated flow and adjusts the spool displacement to control the flow. The performance of the flow control method is evaluated in the experiments. The control error is controlled within ±3% and the effectiveness of the method is validated.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate measurement of the volumetric flowrate of working liquids is essential for process control, as well as energy consumption evaluation. Electromagnetic flowmeters have gained popularity in applications where low-pressure drop and low maintenance are required. Dwyer Instruments, Inc. recently developed an adjustable insertion electromagnetic flowmeter (IEF) featuring accurate and reliable measurement. However, unexpected and non-repeatable behavior in the K-factor was observed during the calibration process. The K-factor is the coefficient used to convert the measured electric potential to the flow velocity in pipes, and the non-repeatable behavior imposes challenges for precise measurement. A one-way coupled magnetohydrodynamics model was developed to reduce the effort and time of onsite troubleshooting and optimization. By modeling the measurement process, the transition of flow regimes and the regeneration of the boundary layer on the electrode surface were identified as the causes of the non-repeatable issue. Then, a series of parametric studies were performed to provide reliable solutions. A new design with further embedded electrodes to allow the smooth transition between boundary layers was recommended. The field test showed excellent repeatability by using the new design, and the non-repeatable issue was entirely resolved. The improvement in the IEF design was implemented in production in less than one week, and it reduced the calibration time by 50%.

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Research on Measurement Characteristics of Elbow Meter

Abstract:In order to optimize its measurement, the measurement characteristics of an elbow meter was studied using numerical simulations and calibration tests.Based on the findings from numerical simulations for the flow field of the elbow meter, a suitable port angle was determined according to the pressure distribution in the meter. Then experiments were carried out in a DN100 pipe with airflow. The results show that, first of all, 45° port angle may increase the sensitivity of pressure measurements and decrease the influence of frictional secondary flow on the flow measurement; Second, in the flowrate range studied, the flow coefficients of the elbow meter is stable, and its relative errors are all within±3%, which can satisfy the fluid flow measurement in most industrial applications.
Comparison of Measurement Performance between Piezoelectric and Differential-pressure Vortex Flowmeters

Abstract:To optimize the measurement of vortex flowmeter,compared the effect of piezoelectric and differential-pressure method,based on a series of contrast experiments.The differences between the two methods in vortex frequency measurement,signal amplitude and anti-interference ability were analyzed.The results show that,first,the flowrate values obtained from these two methods are close to each other under the same fixed flowrate,and the relative error of their meter coefficients is 0.3%.Second,the output signal of the piezoelectric method is tightly linked to the flowrate,and its amplitude increases in an approximate quadratic form with the flowrate.The signal amplitude of the differential-pressure method may be distorted due to the dynamic response limit of the differential pressure sensing system when the measured flowrate exceeds a certain value.Third,the piezoelectric method is sensitive to pipe vibration,whereas the differential-pressure method is hardly affected by this kind of disturbance to some extent.
A Guided Wave Mode Selection Method in PFA Tube for Ultrasonic Flow Measurement

Abstract:The sensitivity of PFA flowmeter base on ultrasonic guided wave is different when using different mode. This paper proposed a method for better mode selection based on the energy distribution of the guided wave in the pipe and the displacement on the outer pipe wall. Simulation and experiment are done on a 1/4-inch PFA tube. Through the finite element simulation, it is obtained that mode L(0,4) has better measuring performance than mode L(0,5) at certain excitation frequency. In the actual clamp-on experiments, two ring-like probes are used to excite and acquire signals. According to the result, the mode selection method has been verified.

Abstract:Measurement of flow is crucial for assuring product quality, increasing manufacturing effectiveness, and promoting the development of science and technology. With the advancement of calibration and automation, standard devices using the mass method, volumetric method, and master meter method have limitations, such as low calibration efficiency and automation, large size, and complex operation. Innovations in this area are desperately needed. To realize the automation of calibrating ultrasonic water meters, a piston-type flow standard device calibration system with a high degree of automation, high calibration efficiency, small size, and easy operation was designed. A piston-type flow standard device was designed, the standard device was modeled, the selection of the main hardware and the design of the automated control of the hardware parts were completed; an automation control system adapted to the flow standard device was developed; and, furthermore, a water meter flow point calibration algorithm integrating the startâ€“stop method and the dual-time method, as well as a water meter flow correction algorithm, was devised to improve the efficiency of ultrasonic water meter calibration. An uncertainty assessment of the designed system was completed; the standard uncertainty and expanded uncertainty of the device were 0.013% and 0.026%. Meanwhile, flow calibration tests were conducted, validating the rationality of the automated calibration algorithm for ultrasonic water meters. The results show that ultrasonic water meters calibrated with flow correction have a flow error within Â±3% in the "low flow range" and within Â±2% in the "high flow range", with a repeatability of less than 0.05%. This indicates that a piston-type flow standard device, coupled with an automation calibration control system, can efficiently, accurately, and conveniently perform water meter calibration, and the system has good practical value.

Abstract:The flowmeter has the advantages of high accuracy,simple installation and so on,so the application of flow measurement technology in auxiliary metering and distribution has been gradually popularized.But domestic auxiliary distribution system based on flow measurement is still not mature and can only meet auxiliary distribution requirements without strict accuracy.Therefore,this study will analyze and design automatic auxiliary distribution system with flow method through hardware design and workflow design,adopt flow regulation method based on frequency conversion control to regulate system measuring process to achieve unity of accuracy and efficiency in the process auxiliary measurement and distribution.Friendly human-computer interface can be established through touch screen design to make the system operation more convenient.

Abstract:The main contribution of this paper is to develop a new flowmeter fault detection approach based on optimized non-singleton type-3 (NT3) fuzzy logic systems (FLSs). The introduced method is implemented on an experimental gas industry plant. The system is modeled by NT3FLSs, and the faults are detected by comparison of measured end estimated signals. In this scheme, the detecting performance depends on the estimation and modeling performance. The suggested NT3FLS is used because of the existence of a high level of measurement errors and uncertainties in this problem. The designed NT3FLS with uncertain footprint-of-uncertainty (FOU), fuzzy secondary memberships and adaptive non-singleton fuzzification results in a powerful tool for modeling signals immersed in noise and error. The level of non-singleton fuzzification and membership parameters are tuned by maximum correntropy (MC) unscented Kalman filter (KF), and the rule parameters are learned by correntropy KF (CKF) with fuzzy kernel size. The suggested learning algorithms can handle the non-Gaussian noises that are common in industrial applications. The various types of flowmeters are investigated, and the effect of common faults are examined. It is shown that the suggested approach can detect the various faults with good accuracy in comparison with conventional approaches.

Abstract:This paper presents a design of a flow meter based on a programmable logic controller (PLC). The new construction of a flow meter controlled by PLC increases the possibilities for the control and automation of fluid flow. Additionally, the didactic potential of the use of simple automation in the form of a programmable logic controller was considered. A device enabling the measurement of fluid flow rate based on a PLC controller was designed, constructed, and tested. The choice of device was the Gems Sensors FT-210 series turbine flow sensor, which is characterized by low purchase and maintenance costs. The properties and the chemical resistance of polyamide-12, the material the sensor is made of, make it possible to test the flow of various types of fluids. As part of the work, an algorithm and a program controlling the device was developed based on the APB Soft software, enabling the accurate reading of the number of impulses sent by the turbine flow sensor. The results of the designed flow meter were compared with the results obtained for the Krohne VA-40 high accuracy rotameter.
