Abstract:Standard theories tell us that, at some point in the Universe's evolution, free quarks and gluons must have become bound together into the hadronic matter we see today. But was this transition abrupt or smooth? The standard model of particle physics predicts two phase transitions that are relevant for the evolution of the early Universe. One, the quantum chromodynamics transition, involves the strong force that binds quarks into protons and neutrons. Despite much theoretical effort, the nature of this transition remains ambiguous. Now Aoki et al. report computationally demanding calculations that suggest that there was no true phase transition. Instead, an analytic crossover took place, involving a rapid, continuous change with temperature as opposed to a jump. This means that it will be difficult to find experimental evidence of a transition from astronomical observations.

Abstract:}\I the fundamental constituents of matter come in matched pairs: for every kind of particle there is an antiparticle that is identical in mass but opposite in other properties, such as electric charge. The symmetrical pair ing of particles and antiparticles is re quired in order to unite the two great theories of 20th-century physics: relativ ity and quantum mechanics. The sym metry has been well verified by experi ment. Since 1932, when the positron, or antielectron, was discovered, the cata logue of antiparticles has grown apace with the catalogue of ordinary parti cles. Indeed, a particle and its antiparti cle have often been discovered simulta neously when the two were created as a pair by a high-energy collision in a parti cle accelerator. Such collisions always seem to yield matter and antimatter in equal quantities; indeed, it was long as sumed that the laws of nature express no preference for matter or antimatter. And yet in the world outside the labo ratory antimatter is almost never en countered. The atoms composing the earth consist of neutrons, protons and electrons, but never their antiparticles. Does this asymmetry prevail through out the universe? That is, does the entire universe consist predominantly of mat ter, with very little antimatter? If it does, has the asymmetry always existed, or did the universe begin with equal num bers of particles and antiparticles and somehow develop an imbalance later? Recent findings in cosmology and par ticle physics suggest answers to these questions. They suggest that in the first instant after the big bang, when the uni verse was much hotter and denser than it is now, there were equal amounts of matter and antimatter. Before the uni verse was 10-35 second old, however, violent collisions among particles cre ated conditions that led promptly to an asymmetry between matter and anti matter. Abstract:n extraordinary new state of matter, the quark-gluon plasma, may have been produced. In collisions between high-energy heavy nuclei, temperatures of 1012 K or more are achieved, roughly ten thousand times that in the solar core. Theorists predict that under these conditions there is a drastic change in the structure of nuclear matter. The usual description in terms of baryons (such as protons and neutrons) and mesons (such as pions) must be abandoned in favour of the truly fundamental particles, quarks and gluons. Experiments have now provided the first substantial evidence that such a change occurs.

Abstract:A larger Planck scale during an early epoch leads to a smaller Hubble rate, which is the measure for efficiency of primordial processes. The resulting slower cosmic tempo can accommodate alternative cosmological histories. We consider this possibility in the context of extra dimensional theories, which can provide a natural setting for the scenario. If the fundamental scale of the theory is not too far above the weak scale, to alleviate the ``hierarchy problem," cosmological constraints imply that thermal relic dark matter would be at the GeV scale, which may be disfavored by cosmic microwave background measurements. Such dark matter becomes viable again in our proposal, due to smaller requisite annihilation cross section, further motivating ongoing low energy accelerator-based searches. Quantum gravity signatures associated with the extra dimensional setting can be probed at high energy colliders -- up to $\sim 13$ TeV at the LHC or $\sim 100$ TeV at FCC-hh. Searches for missing energy signals of dark sector states, with masses $\gtrsim 10$ GeV, can be pursued at a future circular lepton collider.

Abstract:Since 2004, I have been collaborating with artist Josiah McElheny on the design of cosmological sculptures, inspired originally by the chandeliers of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. This article describes the science behind the four works that have emerged from this collaboration to date: An End to Modernity (2005), The Last Scattering Surface (2006), The End of the Dark Ages (2008), and Island Universe (2008). These works incorporate idealized representations of many fundamental aspects of contemporary cosmology, including expansion of the universe, the last scattering surface, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, the growth and morphological transformation of galaxies, the rise and fall of the quasar population, the development of large scale structure, and the possibility that our universe is one of many cosmic islands in an eternally inflating multiverse. Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Ahead of Print. Central supermassive black holes are found in most massive galaxies. However, their origin is still poorly understood. Observations of quasars show that many supermassive black holes existed less than 700 million years after the Big Bang. To explain the existence of such black holes with masses comparable to the stellar mass of the host galaxy, just 500 million years after the Big Bang, it is probably necessary to assume that they originated from heavy seeds. In an ekpyrotic universe, a hot Big Bang occurs as a result of the collision of two branes. Quantum fluctuations create ripples on the brane surfaces, leading to spatial variations in the timing of collisions, thereby creating density perturbations that can facilitate the formation of massive black hole seeds. I hypothesize that perhaps Rayleigh–Bénard–Marangoni-type convection in the extra dimension is a more efficient source of macroscopic density perturbations than quantum fluctuations.

Abstract:The tentative identification of approximately ten relativistic anti-helium cosmic-ray events at AMS-02 would, if confirmed, challenge our understanding of the astrophysical synthesis of heavy anti-nuclei. We propose a novel scenario for the enhanced production of such anti-nuclei that is triggered by isolated, catastrophic injections of large quantities of energetic Standard Model (SM) anti-quarks in our galaxy by physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). We demonstrate that SM anti-nucleosynthetic processes that occur in the resulting rapidly expanding, thermalized fireballs of SM plasma can, for a reasonable range of parameters, produce the reported tentative $\sim 2:1$ ratio of anti-helium-3 to anti-helium-4 events at AMS-02, as well as their relativistic boosts. Moreover, we show that this can be achieved without violating anti-deuterium or anti-proton flux constraints for the appropriate anti-helium fluxes. A plausible BSM paradigm for the catastrophic injections is the collision of macroscopic composite dark-matter objects carrying large net anti-baryon number. Such a scenario would require these objects to be cosmologically stable, but to destabilize upon collision, promptly releasing a fraction of their mass energy into SM anti-particles within a tiny volume. We show that, in principle, the injection rate needed to attain the necessary anti-helium fluxes and the energetic conditions required to seed the fireballs appear possible to obtain in such a paradigm. We leave open the question of constructing a BSM particle physics model to realize this, but we suggest two concrete scenarios as promising targets for further investigation.

Abstract:Peripheral collisions give access to a set of events where hot quasi-projectile (QP) sources are produced exploring a large range of excitation energy. In this range evaporation and multifragmentation are both observed for a similar charge/size of the sources. In this work, this experimental fact will be described in terms of coexistence of two classes of events in the first order phase transition formalism. For this, a detailed study of the experimental correlation between the size/charge of the biggest cluster/fragment (Z1) and the excitation energy (E*) is made. Making the parallel with the same correlation derived from the canonical ensemble description, a first value of the latent heat and boundaries of spinodal and coexistence zone are extracted.

Abstract:We study the impact of the expansion of the universe on a broad class of objects, including black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs, and others. Using metrics that incorporate primordial inhomogeneities, the effects of a hypothetical "center of the universe" on inflation are calculated. Dynamic coordinates for black holes that account for expansions or contractions with arbitrary rates are provided. We consider the possibility that the universe may be bound to evolve into an ultimate state of "total dilution", wherein stable particles are so widely separated that physical communication among them will be impossible for eternity. This is also a scenario of "cosmic virtuality", as no wave-function collapse would occur again. We provide classical models evolving this way, based on the Majumdar-Papapetrou geometries. More realistic configurations, instead, indicate that gravitational forces locally counteract expansion, except in the universe's early stages. We comment on whether quantum phenomena may dictate that total dilution is indeed the cosmos' ultimate destiny.

Abstract:I extend, apply, and generalize a model of a quantum radiator proposed by Griffiths to construct models of radiation fields that exhibit high entropy for long periods of time but approach pure states asymptotically. The models, which are fully consistent with the basic principles of quantum theory, provide coarse-grained models of both realistic physical systems and exotic space-times including black and white holes and baby and prodigal universes. Their analysis suggests experimental probes of some basic but subtle implications of quantum theory including interference between a particle and its own past, influence of quantum statistical entanglement on entropy flow, and residual entanglement connecting distant radiation with a degenerate source.

Abstract:In spontaneously broken gauge theories of particle interactions there are sometimes several local minima of the effective potential. Any of these minima can serve as a vacuum in the sense that we can expand the fields around their values at the minimum, interpret the quantized fluctuations around the minimum as particles, and compare the properties of these particles with experiment. One might think that only the state with absolutely minimum energy could be what we ordinarily call our vacuum, as the other local minima will inevitably decay into this lowest one. However, this is not necessarily the case, because it is possible for the lifetime of a metastable vacuum to be very long, even when compared with the age of the Universe. Furthermore, the energy densities available in present laboratory or astrophysical environments are much less than the barriers which exist in field space between the different local minima, and so we have no direct sensitivity to the presence of a possibly lower vacuum state. (A possible exception to this are magnetic monopoles which do probe the large field region.) If it is not the absolute minimization of the effective potential, what does determine the present vacuum state of the Universe? We argue here that it is determined cosmologically by the dynamical evolution of the Universe from the hot, dense phase which existed shortly after the big bang to the present1,2.

Abstract:We consider the possibility of a past and future eternal universe, constructing geodesically complete inflating, loitering, and bouncing spacetimes. We identify the constraints energy conditions in General Relativity place on the building of eternal cosmological models. Inflationary and bouncing behavior are shown to be essential ingredients in all significant examples. Non-trivial complete spacetimes are shown to violate the null energy condition (NEC) for at least some amount of time, although, some obey the average null energy condition. Ignoring the intractable subtleties introduced by quantum considerations, such as rare tunneling events and Boltzmann brains, we demonstrate that these universes need not have had a beginning or an end.

Abstract:Powerful symmetry principles have guided physicists in their quest for nature's fundamental laws. The successful gauge theory of electroweak interactions postulates a more extensive symmetry for its equations than are manifest in the world. The discrepancy is ascribed to a pervasive symmetry-breaking field, which fills all space uniformly, rendering the Universe a sort of exotic superconductor. So far, the evidence for these bold ideas is indirect. But soon the theory will undergo a critical test depending on whether the quanta of this symmetry-breaking field, the so-called Higgs particles, are produced at the Large Hadron Collider (due to begin operation in 2007).

Abstract:As the folklore goes that our universe started about 13.7 billion years ago in a manner of a Big Bang as the mythical Hero PanGu cleft the sky from the Earth, the energy density and temperature were extremely high at the beginning yet without a particular point of explosion center, everything was uniform and isotropic on sufficiently large scales of spacetime, and the Universe continues to expand up to now. Soon after the very beginning, the temperature of our Universe dropped rapidly, several types of fundamental particles emerged in succession, processes of thermal nuclear synthesis in the early Universe largely determined the primordial element abundance distribution prior to the formation of first-generation stars in the Universe. At the onset of Big Bang of our Universe, there should exist quantum fluctuations in the energy field; such weak yet ubiquitous fluctuations carried over to the matter field emerged later were gradually amplified hierarchically by gravity, leading to the formation of material structural systems on various scales in cosmological spacetime (including superclusters of galaxies, clusters of galaxies, galaxies, globular clusters, stars, and planets and so forth). As the Universe expands, the temperature of a thermal electromagnetic radiation field trapped inside materials decreases; about 389 thousand years after the Big Bang, this thermal electromagnetic radiation field no longer interacts with matter but still carries the indelible imprint of earlier matter fluctuations. Based on the general theory of relativity created and formulated by Einstein (1915), Einstein himself (1917), Friedmann (1922), Lematre (1927), de Sitter (1932) initiated the theoretical exploration of modern cosmology. Hubble (1929) published the epochal observational fact that the receding speed of galaxies is proportional to their distances away from us. Based on cosmic elemental abundance and the physics of nuclear synthesis, Gamow, Alpher and Herman boldly conceived the physical framework scenario for a Big Bang Universe during 1940s to 1950s. While conducting microwave antenna research at Bell Laboratories, Penzias and Wilson (1964) unexpectedly discovered the remnant 2.7K cosmic microwave background radiation. After years of careful design and preparation, Mather and Smoot (from 1989 to 1994) led the COsmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite experiment to accurately measure the blackbody spectrum and the anisotropy of feeble fluctuations; in recognizing their groundbreaking contributions,they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics of year 2006. During past 90 years, scientists voiced various opinions in competition, fighting each other fiercely, collecting relevant evidence, and creating various theories. Along with the persistent and comprehensive development of experiments on ground, at high altitudes and in space as well as the theoretical research, we are entering the era of precision cosmology.
