Strain-induced ferroelectricity in CaTiO$_3$ from first principles

Abstract:First principles calculations are used to investigate the effects of epitaxial strain on the structure of the perovskite oxide CaTiO$_3$, with particular focus on the stabilization of a ferroelectric phase related to a polar instability hidden in the orthorhombic equilibrium bulk $Pbnm$ structure but found in previous first-principles studies of the ideal cubic perovskite high-symmetry reference structure. At 1.5% strain, we find an epitaxial orientation transition between the $ab$-$ePbnm$ phase, favored for compressive strains, and the $c$-$ePbnm$ phase. For larger tensile strains, a polar instability develops in the $c$-$ePbnm$ phase and an epitaxial-strain-induced ferroelectric phase is obtained with polarization along a $<$110$>$ direction with respect to the primitive perovskite lattice vectors of the square substrate.

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectrics (1-x%)(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-x%BaTiO3 (NBT-xBT) have been widely studied in recent years for the high electrostrains and special structural features. However, there are some structure evolutions still unclear, such as the transition occurring at the temperature of dielectric frequency dispersion vanishes. Here, in-situ polarized Raman scattering was utilized to investigate the evolutions of the lattice structure induced by temperature and electric field. The Raman-active modes for P4bm NBT-8BT were separated and identified under the framework of group theory. By observing A1 modes, it is found that electric field cannot induce ferroelectric state after the frequency dispersion vanishes, demonstrating a competition between relaxor characteristics and long-range ferroelectric order which evolves with temperature. According to B2 modes, the P4bm-P4mm transition was not observed under extra-high electric fields. This work interpretates the Raman scattering and lattice evolutions of NBT-8BT, and proposes a method to analyze Raman spectrum which is generally applicable to other ferroelectrics.

A ferroelectric quantum phase transition inside the superconducting dome of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-\delta}$

It turns into a ferroelectric upon substitution of a tiny fraction of strontium atoms with calcium. The two orders may be accidental neighbors or intimately connected, as in the picture of quantum critical ferroelectricity. Here, we show that in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-delta}$ ($0.002u003cxu003c0.009$, $deltau003c0.001$) the ferroelectric order coexists with dilute metallicity and its superconducting instability in a finite window of doping. At a critical carrier density, which scales with the Ca content, a quantum phase transition destroys the ferroelectric order. We detect an upturn in the normal-state scattering and a significant modification of the superconducting dome in the vicinity of this quantum phase transition. The enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature with calcium substitution documents the role played by ferroelectric vicinity in the precocious emergence of superconductivity in this system, restricting possible theoretical scenarios for pairing.
Interplay Between Antiferrodistortive, Ferroelectric, and Superconducting Instabilities in Sr1-X Ca-X Tio3-Delta

Abstract:SrTiO3 undergoes a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition at 105 K. This antiferrodistortive transition is believed to be in competition with incipient ferroelectricity. Substituting strontium by isovalent calcium induces a ferroelectric order. Introducing mobile electrons to the system by chemical nonisovalent doping, on the other hand, leads to the emergence of a dilute metal with a superconducting ground state. The link between superconductivity and the other two instabilities is a question gathering momentum in the context of a popular paradigm linking unconventional superconductors and quantum critical points. We present a set of specific-heat, neutron-scattering, dielectric-permittivity, and polarization measurements on Sr1-x Ca-x TiO3 (0 < x < 0.009) and a study of low-temperature electric conductivity in Sr-0.9978 Ca-0.0022 TiO3-delta. Calcium substitution was found to enhance the transition temperature for both antiferrodistortive and ferroelectric transitions. Moreover, we find that Sr-0.9978 Ca-0.0022 TiO3-delta has a superconducting ground state. The critical temperature in this rare case of a superconductor with a ferroelectric parent is slightly lower than in SrTiO3-delta of comparable carrier concentration. A three-dimensional phase diagram for Sr1-x Ca-x TiO3-delta tracking the three transition temperatures as a function of x and delta results from this study, in which ferroelectric and superconducting ground states are not immediate neighbors.

Abstract:CaCu3Ti4O12 thin films were prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by a sol-gel method. A ferroelectric hysteresis loop was obtained at room temperature for amorphous CaCu3Ti4O12 thin film. The ferroelectric characteristic of amorphous CaCu3Ti4O12 thin film was corroborated by the observation of piezoresponse force microscopy. The result indicates that there exists correlated intrinsic electric dipole moment in amorphous CaCu3Ti4O12 thin film, and the origin of ferroelectricity in amorphous CaCu3Ti4O12 thin film is also discussed. Abstract:The calcium copper titanate CaCu3Ti4O12 is a distorted perovskite exhibiting a giant dielectric constant with non-ferroelectric temperature behavior. Recent investigations tend to attribute the origin of the anomalous behavior of CaCu3Ti4O12 dielectric properties to the presence of heterogeneous microstructure and grain boundary layers, excluding that the giant dielectric constant is present in perfectly stoichiometric, defect-free crystals. The intrinsic origin is also ruled out by the normal dielectric behavior obtained in ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. In this work, we present ab initio calculations performed to estimate the energies associated with the creation of defects in the CaCu3Ti4O12 lattice, including oxygen and copper vacancies, and investigate their electronic properties. Furthermore, with a view at ascertaining whether correlation effects may modify the electronic structure and dielectricity of CaCu3Ti4O12, we present an application to CaCu3Ti4O12 of a DFT-based pseudo-selfinteraction-correction (pSIC) method already applied successfully to Mott insulators.

Abstract:The effect of epitaxial strain on the phonon spectra, crystal structure, spontaneous polarization, dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic properties of (001)-oriented ferroelectric (BaTiO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices ($m = n = {}$1-4) was studied using the first-principles density-functional theory. The ground state of free-standing superlattices is the monoclinic $Cm$ polar phase. Under the in-plane biaxial compressive strain, it transforms to tetragonal $P4mm$ polar phase, and under the in-plane biaxial tensile strain, it transforms to orthorhombic $Amm2$ polar phase. When changing the in-plane lattice parameter, a softening of several optical and acoustic modes appears at the boundaries between the polar phases, and corresponding components of dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic tensors diverge critically. The comparison of the mixing enthalpy of disordered Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ solid solution modeled using two special quasirandom structures SQS-4 with the mixing enthalpy of the superlattices reveals a tendency of the BaTiO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ system to short-range ordering and shows that these superlattices are thermodynamically quite stable.
Hidden Frustration in Double-Perovskite CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$

Abstract: We study the magnetic properties of CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$ (CFTO) by high-field magnetization and specific heat measurements. While the magnetic susceptibility data yield a vanishingly small Curie-Weiss temperature, the magnetic moments are not fully polarized in magnetic field up to 60 T, which reveals a large spin exchange energy scale. Yet, the system shows no long range magnetic order but a spin-glass-like state below 5.5 K in zero field, indicating strong magnetic frustration in this system. Applying magnetic field gradually suppresses the spin-glass-like state and gives rise to a potential quantum spin liquid state whose low-temperature specific heat exhibits a $T^{1.6}$ power-law. Crucially, conventional mechanisms for frustration do not apply to this system as it possesses neither apparent geometrical frustration nor exchange frustration. We suggest that the orbital modulation of exchange interaction is likely the source of hidden frustration in CFTO, and its full characterization may open a new route in the quest for quantum spin liquids.

Abstract:The dielectric characteristics of BaBi2Nb2O9, BaBi4Ti4O15, BaBi8Ti7O27, and La-substituted SrBi4Ti4O4 were investigated to discuss their ferroelectric phase transition and relaxor behaviors. BaBi2Nb2O9 showed typical relaxor behaviors, and a shift of T-m with increasing frequency was observed in BaBi4Ti4O15 and SrBi4-xLaxTi4O15 (x=0.8, 1.0) but they underwent a real paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition on zero-field cooling, while BaBi8Ti7O27 showed a normal ferroelectric nature. The reduced concentration and weakened coupling of the dipoles related to A-site bismuth are believed to be responsible for the appearance of short-range electric ordering and the relaxor behaviors in these bismuth layer-structured compounds.
Impact of Quenched Random Fields on the Ferroelectric-to-relaxor Crossover in the Solid Solution (1-X)batio3-xdyfeo(3)

Abstract:Lead-based perovskite relaxor ferroelectrics are widely used as materials for numerous applications due to their extraordinary dielectric, piezoelectric, and electrostrictive properties. While the mechanisms of relaxor behavior are disputable, the importance of quenched (static) random electric fields created at nanoscale by the disordered heterovalent cations has been well recognized. Meanwhile, an increasing amount of scientific and technological efforts has been concentrated on lead-free perovskites, in particular, solid solutions of classical ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BT), which better meet ecological requirements. Among BT-based solutions the homovalent systems are elaborately studied where strong random electric fields are absent, while the solubility limit of heterovalent solutions is typically too low to fully reveal the peculiarities of relaxor behavior. In this paper, we prepare a perovskite solid solution system (1 - x)Ba2+Ti4+O3-xDy(3+)Fe(3+)O(3) (0 <= x <= 0.3) and study it as a model heterovalent lead-free system. We determine crystal structure, ferroelectric, and dielectric properties of ceramics in a wide range of temperatures and concentrations, construct a phase diagram, and find and analyze the concentration-induced crossover from normal ferroelectric to relaxor behavior. We demonstrate that quenched random electric fields of moderate strength promote the ferroelectric-to-relaxor crossover, but do not change qualitatively the peculiarities of relaxor behavior, while strong enough fields destroy the relaxor state, so that the material becomes an ordinary linear dielectric. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of known theories of relaxor ferroelectricity.
Local structure and its implications for the relaxor ferroelectric Cd$_2$Nb$_2$O$_7$

Abstract:The relaxor ferroelectric transition in Cd$_2$Nb$_2$O$_7$ is thought to be described by the unusual condensation of two $\Gamma$-centered phonon modes, $\Gamma_4^-$ and $\Gamma_5^-$. However, their respective roles have proven to be ambiguous, with disagreement between $\textit{ab initio}$ studies, which favor $\Gamma_4^-$ as the primary mode, and global crystal refinements, which point to $\Gamma_5^-$ instead. Here, we resolve this issue by demonstrating from x-ray pair distribution function measurements that locally, $\Gamma_4^-$ dominates, but globally, $\Gamma_5^-$ dominates. This behavior is consistent with the near degeneracy of the energy surfaces associated with these two distortion modes found in our own $\textit{ab initio}$ simulations. Our first-principles calculations also show that these energy surfaces are almost isotropic, providing an explanation for the numerous structural transitions found in Cd$_2$Nb$_2$O$_7$, as well as its relaxor behavior. Our results point to several candidate descriptions of the local structure, some of which demonstrate two-in/two-out behavior for Nb displacements within a given Nb tetrahedron. Although this suggests the possibility of a charge analog of spin ice in Cd$_2$Nb$_2$O$_7$, our results are more consistent with a Heisenberg-like description for dipolar fluctuations rather than an Ising one. We hope this encourages future experimental investigations of the Nb and Cd dipolar fluctuations, along with their associated mode dynamics.

Electric-field-induced non-ergodic relaxor to ferroelectric transition in BiFeO3- x SrTiO3 ceramics

Abstract:While BiFeO3-based solid solutions show great promise for applications in energy conversion and storage, realizing this promise necessitates understanding the structure-property relationship in particular pertaining to the relaxor-like characteristics often exhibited by solid solutions with polar-to-non-polar morphotropic phase boundaries. To this end, we investigated the role of the compositionally-driven relaxor state in (100 - x)BiFeO3-xSrTiO3 [BFO-xSTO], via in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction under bipolar electric-field cycling. The electric-field induced changes to the crystal structure, phase fraction and domain textures were monitored via the {111}pc, {200}pc, and 1/2{311}pc Bragg peaks. The dynamics of the intensities and positions of the (111) and (111̄) reflections reveal an initial non-ergodic regime followed by long-range ferroelectric ordering after extended poling cycles. The increased degree of random multi-site occupation in BFO-42STO compared to BFO-35STO is correlated with an increase of the critical electric field needed to induce the non-ergodic-to-ferroelectric transition, and a decrease in the degree of domain reorientation. Although both compositions show an irreversible transition to a long-range ferroelectric state, our results suggest that the weaker ferroelectric response in BFO-42STO is related to an increase in ergodicity. This, in turn, serves to guide the development of BFO-based systems into promising platform for further property engineering towards specific capacitor applications.

Abstract:The comprehensive understanding of (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-BaTiO3 (NBT-BT) lattice structure is highly desired to develop lead-free ferroelectric materials. However, most of the previous studies focused on the improvement of piezoelectric properties at room temperature, and many structural puzzles are left unclear. In this work, the lattice structure of a ferroelastic phase and the ferroelectric-ferroelastic transitions in both rhombohedral NBT and tetragonal NBT-8%BT single crystals are investigated in detail. Our results illustrate the complex process of the ferroelectric-ferroelastic transition of NBT. The variation of Ti-O modes and oxygen octahedra modes clearly indicates the gradual change of lattice symmetry from R3c to P4bm during a wide temperature range between 170 and 350 °C. A ferroelectric-ferroelastic transition is also confirmed in tetragonal NBT-8BT for the first time, and the lattice symmetry of P4bm is found to be maintained during the ferroelastic stage. This work reveals the lattice evolutions of the ferroelectric-ferroelastic transition of NBT-BT crystals and provides new insights for understanding the ferroelasticity and the evolution of phonon modes in a lead-free relaxor.
Ferroelectricity in [111]-oriented epitaxially strained SrTiO$_3$ from first principles

Abstract:We use first principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the effect of biaxial strain in the low-temperature structural and ferroelectric properties of [111]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. We find that [111] biaxial strain, achievable by coherent epitaxial growth along the [111] direction, induces structural distortions in SrTiO$_3$ that are not present in either bulk or [001]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Under [111] biaxial strain, SrTiO$_3$ displays ferroelectricity at tensile strain, and paraelectricity at compressive strain. We compute the phonon spectrum and macroscopic polarization of SrTiO$_3$ as a function of [111] biaxial strain, and relate our results to the predictions of the free energy phenomenological model of Pertsev, Tagantsev and Setter [Phys. Rev. B 61, 825 (2000); Phys. Rev. B 65, 219901 (2002)].

Abstract:The existence of Bi-fluctuation dispersing in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) relaxor ferroelectric is hinted in other recent studies. However, this fluctuation has not been directly observed yet. We introduce the Bi-rich nano-regions with different sizes in a series of NBT ceramics by the slight excess of Bi3+ content. The crystal symmetries of the Bi-rich nano-regions and the NBT matrix are rhombohedral. The lattice parameters of the nano-regions are larger than those of the matrix in NBT ceramics, which were confirmed by the X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement, TEM techniques and first-principles calculation. Also, the disorder-induced nano-regions appearing as Bi-fluctuation are associated with the complex phase transitions and the high-frequency relaxor behaviour of NBT suggested by the dielectric measurements and Raman spectra.

Abstract:Despite the extraordinary electromechanical properties of relaxor ferroelectrics, correlating their properties to underlying atomic-scale structures remains a decisive challenge for these "mess" systems. Here, taking the lead-free relaxor ferroelectric Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-based system as an example, we decipher the atomic-scale structure and its relationship to the polar structure evolution and large dynamic electromechanical response, using the direct atomic-scale point-by-point correlation analysis. With judicious chemical modification, we demonstrate the increased defect concentration is the main driving force for deviating polarizations with high-angle walls, leading to the increased random field. Meanwhile, the main driving force for deviating polarizations with low-angle walls changes from the anti-phase oxygen octahedral tilting to the multidirectional A-O displacement, leading to the decreased anisotropy field. Benefiting from the competitive and synergetic equilibrium of anisotropic field versus random field, the facilitated polarization rotation and extension versus facilitated domain switching are identified to be responsible for the giant electromechanical response. These observations lay a foundation for understanding the "composition-structure-property" relationships in relaxor ferroelectric systems, guiding the design of functional materials for electromechanical applications.
