Abstract:The structural, optical, and electronic properties of a series of lithium rare earth polyphosphates [LiLn(PO3)(4)] [Ln = La (1), Eu (2), Gd (3)] have been investigated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, and spectroscopic measurements, as well as calculations of energy-band structures, density of states, and optical response functions by density functional methods. These LiLn(PO3)(4) systems are monoclinic with space group C2/c and Z = 4. Their unit-cell parameters decrease as the ionic radius of Ln(3+) decreases (La3+ > Eu3+ > Gd3+). Both (PO4)(3-) zig-zag chains and infinite chains formed by the alternate connection of LnO(8) polyhedra and LiO4 tetrahedra run parallel to the b-axis in the structure. The energy-band structures, density of states, the chemical bonds, and optical properties have been investigated by density functional methods for some of the title compounds. Abstract:Antiferroelectrics have attracted increasing research interests in recent years due to both their great potential in energy storage applications and intriguing structural characteristics. However, the links between the electrical properties and structural characteristics of distorted perovskite antiferroelectrics are yet to be fully deciphered. Here, we adopt local-structure methods to elucidate the nanoscale atomic structure of AgNbO3-based antiferroelectrics and their structural evolution upon La doping. The local structural features including interatomic distance distributions and atomic displacements have been analyzed using neutron small-box pair distribution function (PDF) refinement in conjunction with large-box Reverse Monte Carlo modelling. Our results highlight the correlation of cation displacements in AgNbO3 and its disruption by the incorporation of La, apparently in corroboration with the observed anomalous dielectric properties. Spatial ordering of cation vacancies is observed in La-doped AgNbO3 samples, which coordinates with oxygen octahedral tilting to relieve lattice strain. These results provide renewed insights into the atomic structure and antiferroelectric phase instabilities of AgNbO3 and relevant perovskite materials, further lending versatile opportunities for enhancing their functionalities.

Abstract:Alkali metal-rare earth polyphosphates, CsLn(PO3)(4) (Ln = La, Ce), were synthesized by the high temperature solution reaction and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. They crystallize in the monoclinic space groups P2(1) (Z = 2) and feature infinite PO4 spiral chains linked with neighboring CsO10 and LnO(8) polyhedra. In addition, theoretically calculated energy band structure and density of states (DOS) by the density functional theory (DFT) predict that the solid-state compound CsLa(PO3)(4) possesses insulative character.

Abstract:The structure of N-(oxabutyl-2-ene acid)-2,3-benzo-10-aza-1,4,7,13-tetraoxacyclopentadeca-2-ene (L) was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal is triclinic, space group P1 with cell dimensions of a = 0.80821(13) nm, b = 1.08777(13) nm, c = 1.09263(13) nm, alpha = 113.045(50)degrees, beta =95.428(11)degrees, gamma = 91.162(12)degrees, V= 0.8782(2) nm(3), Z= 2, mu,(MoK alpha) = 0.107 nm(-1), D-x = 1.382 g cm(-3). The ligand L has an intramolecular hydrogen bond [O(7)-(HO)-O-...(5)] resulting in the formation of a seven-membered ring. Abstract:Sodium holmium polyphosphate crystal, NaHo(PO3)(4), has been synthesized by the high temperature solution reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, EDX, IR, UV-vis-NIR, and PL spectra. The structure belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with Z = 4, a = 7.181(3), b = 13.059(5) and c = 9.730 (4) angstrom. It is described as a three-dimensional (3D) architecture made up of [P4O12](4-) anionic spiral chains and HoO8 polyhedra by corner-sharing. The 8-coordinated sodium atoms are located in infinite tunnels. The results of EDX and IR spectrum are in good agreement with the crystallographic analysis. In addition, NaHo(PO3)(4) exhibits visible light emission in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract:Based on ab initio density-functional-theory using generalized gradient approximation, we systematically study the optical and electronic properties of the insulating dense sodium phase (Na-hp4) reported recently [Ma \textit{et al.}, Nature \textbf{458}, 182 (2009)]. The structure is found optically anisotropic and transparent to visible light, which can be well interpreted using its electronic band structure and angular moment decomposed density of states. Through the bader analysis of Na-hp4 at different pressures, we conclude that ionicity exists in the structure and becomes stronger with increasing pressure. In addition, the absorption spectra in the energy range from 1.4 to 2.4 eV are compared with recent experimental results and found good agreement. It is found that the deep-lying valence electrons participate in the interband transition.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide complexes with the 2-chloro-4,5-difluorobenzoate (2-cl-4,5-dfba) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), have been synthesized with the formulae of [La(2-cl-4,5-dfba)3phen]n·nH2O (1), [Nd(2-cl-4,5-dfba)3phenH2O]2 (2), [Ln(2-cl-4,5-dfba)3phen]2 (Ln=Eu (3), Ho (4)). The complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and fluorescent spectra and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The structures of the four complexes are very different. Complex 1 is an infinite 1D chain polymeric structure formed by the asymmetric units with the mirror growth pattern. Each La3+ ion is coordinated to four bridging carboxylic groups, two tridentate chelating–bridging carboxylic groups, simultaneous with one phen molecule, giving the coordination number of nine. In the molecular structures of complexes 2 and 3, two Ln3+ ions are linked by four carboxyl groups, forming two binuclear molecules. In addition, each Nd3+ ion in complex 2 is bonded to one H2O molecule and one carboxyl group by monodentate mode, one phen molecule by bidentate chelating, and each Eu3+ ion is also chelated to one phen molecule and one carboxyl group in complex 3. And in complex 4, the Ho3+ ion yields a eight-coordinated distorted square anti-prism coordination geometry. The three-dimensional IR accumulation spectra of gaseous products for complexes 1 to 4 are analyzed and further authenticated the thermal decomposition processes with TG-DTG curves. The heat capacities of complexes 2 to 4 are measured and fitted to a polynomial equation by the least squares method on the basis of the reduced temperature x (x=[T−(Tmax+Tmin)/2]/[(Tmax−Tmin)/2]). Then the smoothed molar heat capacities and thermodynamic functions of complexes 2 to 4 are calculated. The fluorescence intensity of complex 3 is markedly improved as well.

Abstract:Structural investigations on double perovskites NaLaMgWO6 using combined X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques have verified the obtained structure with a space group of C2/m (No. 12), which is different from the original report of the monoclinic one. In addition, high-angle annular-dark-field electron micrographs of the NaLaMgWO6 double perovskite revealed the formation of antiphase boundaries, orientation domains and phase separation in Na0.7La1.1MgWO6 and NaLaMg1.3W0.9O6 by altering the compound chemistry. These results provide a direct structural insight to link the physical properties with their crystallographic defects for double perovskites on both scientific and engineering basis.

Abstract:Abstract Single crystals of K 2 Ln (NO 3 ) 5 ·2H 2 O ( Ln =La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) (K Ln N) were grown by evaporation in aqueous solution under constant temperature conditions. The structure of KPrN was determined from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The KPrN crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Fdd 2 with parameters a =21.411(3) A, b =11.2210(10) A, c =12.208(2) A, Z =6, V =2933.0(7) A 3 , R =0.0240, R w =0.0603. The powder second harmonic generation (SHG) intensities of KLn N ( Ln =La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) are also studied. The results demonstrate that their SHG intensities are 4–9 times larger than that of KDP, in which the KPrN shows the highest SHG coefficient.
