Abstract:The effects of fine particles on the microstructural evolution of polycrystalline ice have been studied using uniaxial compression method and optical microscopy. It has been shown that the ice with particles always shows a higher flow rate compared to the ice without particles,no matter under high or low temperature,or under high or low flow stress. At a temperature of-10 ℃ and stress of 1.45 MPa,dynamic recrystallization of both types of ices is finished through the new grains nucleation and growth along the gain boundaries. The ice with particles has higher dynamic recrystallization ratio due to the high internal stress caused by the particles inhibiting grain boundary sliding, thus it has a much smaller grain size.At temperatures of-5 ℃ or-10 ℃ and stress of 0.4 MPa,dynamic recrystallization of the ice with particles is also finished through the new grains nucleation and growth along the gain boundaries due to the relative high internal stress caused by the particles inhibiting grain boundary sliding. However, dynamic recrystallination of the ice without particles is through strain induced boundary migration because the low flow stress is not high enough to nucleate new grains. Thus, the grain size remains constant.
