Abstract:The van Hove model of a two-dimensional band structure with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping integrals is used to account for unusual temperature and doping dependence of the thermoelectric power (TEP) in cuprate superconductors. It is shown that the present theory can reproduce global trends of TEP data, including a positive peak of TEP in the underdoped regime, a decrease in TEP with increasing doping, a change in sign of TEP nearby the optimal doping, and an approximately linear decrease in TEP with temperature.

Abstract:I briefly review several key issues in understanding the cuprate superconductors from the point of view of doped-Mott-insulator. Then I present an effective low-energy theory and show that the phase diagram of such a model includes an anti-ferromagnetic (AF) phase, a superconducting state, and a pseudogap phase at low doping and low temperature, consistent with the experimental one. The dual topological gauge structure of this model is responsible for unifying these phases within a single framework with correct doping and temperature scales. Some unique predictions in such a model are also discussed.

Abstract:An understanding of the anomalous charge dynamics in the high-T-c cuprates is obtained based on a model study of doped Mott insulators. The high-temperature optical conductivity is found to generally have a two-component structure: a Drude-like part followed by a mid-infrared band. The scattering rate associated with the Drude part exhibits a linear-temperature dependence over a wide range of high temperature, while the Drude term gets progressively suppressed below a characteristic energy of magnetic origin as the system enters the pseudogap phase. The high-energy optical conductivity shows a resonancelike feature in an underdoped case and continuously evolves into a 1/omega tail at higher doping, indicating that they share the same physical origin. In particular, such a high-energy component is closely correlated with the omega-peak structure of the density-density correlation function at different momenta, in systematic consistency with exact diagonalization results based on the t-J model. The underlying physics is attributed to the high-energy spin-charge separation in the model, in which the "mode coupling" responsible for the anomalous charge properties is not between the electrons and some collective mode but rather between charge carriers, holons, and a topological gauge field controlled by spin dynamics, as the consequence of the strong short-range electron-electron Coulomb repulsion in the doped Mott insulator.

Abstract:Within the t-t'-J model, the physical properties of doped cuprates in the superconducting-state are discussed based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. We show that the superconducting-state in cuprate superconductors is controlled by both superconducting gap parameter and single particle coherence, and then quantitatively reproduce some main features found in the experiments on cuprate superconductors, including the doping dependence of the superconducting gap parameter and superconducting transition temperature, the electron spectral function at [\pi,0] point, the charge asymmetry of superconductivity in the hole and electron doping, and the doping and energy dependence of the incommensurate magnetic scattering at both low and high energies and commensurate [\pi,\pi] resonance at intermediate energy. We also show that the incommensurate magnetic excitations at high energy have energies greater than the superconducting gap energy, and are present at the superconducting transition temperature.

Abstract:In this article I give a pedagogical illustration of why the essential problem of high-Tc superconductivity in the cuprates is about how an antiferromagnetically ordered state can be turned into a short-range state by doping. I will start with half-filling where the antiferromagnetic ground state is accurately described by the Liang-Doucot-Anderson (LDA) wavefunction. Here the effect of the Fermi statistics becomes completely irrelevant due to the no double occupancy constraint. Upon doping, the statistical signs reemerge, albeit much reduced as compared to the original Fermi statistical signs. By precisely incorporating this altered statistical sign structure at finite doping, the LDA ground state can be recast into a short-range antiferromagnetic state. Superconducting phase coherence arises after the spin correlations become short-ranged, and the superconducting phase transition is controlled by spin excitations. I will stress that the pseudogap phenomenon naturally emerges as a crossover between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases. As a characteristic of non Fermi liquid, the mutual statistical interaction between the spin and charge degrees of freedom will reach a maximum in a high-temperature "strange metal phase" of the doped Mott insulator.
Theoretical understanding of correlation between magnetic phase transition and the superconducting dome in high-Tc cuprates

Abstract:Many issues concerning the origin of high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) are still under debate. For example, how the magnetic ordering varies with doping and its relationship with the superconducting temperature; and why the maximal Tc always occurs near the quantum critical point. In this paper, taking hole-doped La2CuO4 as a classical example, we employ the first-principles band structure and total energy calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to explore how the symmetry-breaking magnetic ground state evolves with hole doping and the origin of a dome-shaped superconductivity region in the phase diagram. We demonstrate that the local antiferromagnetic ordering and doping play key roles in determining the electron-phonon coupling, thus Tc. Initially, the La2CuO4 possesses a checkerboard local antiferromagnetic ground state. As the hole doping increases, Tc increases with the increase of the density of states at the Fermi surface. But as the doping increases further, the strength of the antiferromagnetic interaction weakens. At the critical doping level, a magnetic phase transition occurs that reduces the local antiferromagnetism-assisted electron-phonon coupling, thus diminishing the Tc. The superconductivity disappears in the heavily overdoped region when the antiferromagnetic ordering disappears. These observations could account for why cuprates have a dome-shaped superconductivity region in the phase diagram. Our study, thus, contributes to a fundamental understanding of the correlation between doping, local magnetic ordering, and superconductivity of HTS.

Abstract:Based on the t-t'-U-V model with proper chosen parameters for describing the cuprate superconductors, it is found that near the optimal doping at low temperature (T), only the pure d-wave superconductivity (dSC) prevails and the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is completely suppressed. At higher T, the AF order with stripe modulation and the accompanying charge order may emerge, and they could exist above the dSC transition temperature. We calculate the local differential tunneling conductance (LDTC) from the local density of states (LDOS) and show that their energy variations are rather different from each other as T increases. Although the calculated modulation periodicity in the LDTC/LDOS and bias energy dependence of the Fourier amplitude of LDTC in the "pseudogap" region are in good agreement with the recent scanning tunnel microscope experiment [Vershinin , Science 303, 1995 (2004)], we point out that some of the energy-dependent features in the LDTC do not represent the intrinsic characteristics of the sample.
Simple predictors of $T_c$ in superconducting cuprates and the role of interactions between effective Wannier orbitals in the $d-p$ 3-band model

Abstract:At optimal doping, different cuprate compounds can exhibit vastly different critical temperatures for superconductivity ($T_c$), ranging from about 20 K to about 135 K. The precise properties of the lattice that determine the magnitude of the $T_c$ are currently unknown. In this paper, we investigate the dependence of the optimal doping $T_c$ on the parameters of the Emery ($d-p$) model for the CuO$_2$ planes in the cuprates. We show that the best scaling is obtained not with the parameters of the model written in the real ($d/p$-orbital) space, but rather written in the space of effective Wannier orbitals. In this basis, one obtains a model of three sublattices coupled through all possible 4-point interactions. We identify multiple predictor variables that fit the experimental $T_c$ to about $\pm4-5$ K and that remarkably depend on the leading attractive coupling constants in the transformed Hamiltonian.

Abstract:The recently observed an intimate link between the nature of the strange metallic normal-state and superconductivity in the overdoped electron-doped cuprate superconductors is calling for an explanation. Here the intrinsic correlation between the strength of the low-temperature linear-in-temperature normal-state resistivity and superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ in the overdoped electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied within the framework of the kinetic-energy-driven superconductivity. On the one hand, the main ingredient is identified into a electron pairing mechanism involving {\it the spin excitation}, and then $T_{\rm c}$ has a dome-like shape doping dependence with the maximal $T_{\rm c}$ that occurs at around the optimal electron doping. On the other hand, in the normal-state above $T_{\rm c}$, the low-temperature linear-in-temperature normal-state resistivity in the overdoped regime arises from the momentum relaxation due to the electron umklapp scattering mediated by {\it the same spin excitation}. This {\it same spin excitation} that governs both the electron umklapp scattering responsible for the low-temperature linear-in-temperature normal-state resistivity and electron pairing responsible for superconductivity naturally generates a correlation between the strength of the low-temperature linear-in-temperature normal-state resistivity and $T_{\rm c}$ in the overdoped regime.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical description of the superconducting state of under- to overdoped cuprates, based on the short coherence length of these materials and the associated strong pairing fluctuations. The calculated T-c, and the zero temperature excitation gap Delta(0), as a function of hole concentration x, are in semiquantitative agreement with experiment. Although T-c/Delta(0) has a strong non-BCS x dependence, and Delta(T) deviates significantly from the BCS prediction, we obtain. remarkably, quasiuniversal behavior for the superfluid density rho(s)(T)/rho(s)(0) and the Josephson critical current I-c(T)/I-c(0) as a function of T/T-c. A predictive bond order model connects covalent superconductivity, including cuprates, oxypnictides or HfN based materials

Abstract:A phenomenological bond order model predicting doping curves [Tc vs doped charge, c] of cuprates is found to have wider applicability. In this model Tc is dependent on the density of electronic pair crystals [EC] in a covalently bonding layer structure and on a layer Isolation factor, f [ECI model]. Characteristic doping curve events such as optima are correlated with a select number of EC with pair repeats corresponding to multiples of lattice parameters such as c=2/3x4=0.167, where 3x4 represent pair periodicity of 3a0 and 4b0. At these EC all doped charge is converted into pairs according to c=2np. For Tc prediction one writes Tc=2npfTe, where Te=600K and 300K as empirical constants for hole and electron doping. Doping curves for YBa2Cu3Oy with their sharp optima or kinks, separated by near linear ranges, or Tc plateaus on different preparations, can express the stability of special EC. Examples are c=0.22=2/32 for the sharp optimum or the Tc=90K plateau, and c= 0.17 for the 60K plateau, the latter depicting also the optimum for other systems such as La2-wSrwCuO4. For oxypnictides R[O1-xFx]FeAs one writes Tc=300x and expects EC with optimal dopings at x=0.11 and 0.17, as corroborated experimentally. Other examples include HfN derivatives such as Li0.17HfNCl.

Universal Scaling Law of Quasiparticle Nernst Effect in Cuprates: A Unified Schematic Analysis for Transverse Transport

Abstract:We discover a universal scaling law for the quasiparticle Nernst coefficient in underdoped cuprates, whose magnitude decreases exponentially with increasing temperature as confirmed in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. We attribute it to the basic mathematical structure of the conductivity formula with a narrow effective bandwidth of nonzero Berry curvatures associated with the pseudogap. A unified scheme is then developed to analyze transverse transport in hole-doped cuprates and clarify the puzzling disparity in determining the pseudogap temperature from different measurements. Our proposal opens the avenue for exploring potential scaling laws in the intermediate temperature region and may have broad applications in strongly correlated or narrow band systems.

Abstract:The doping and frequency evolutions of the incommensurate spin response and the resonance mode in the superconducting state of high-T-c cuprates are studied based on the scenario of the Fermi-surface topology. We use the slave-boson mean-field approach to the t-t'-J model and include the antiferromagnetic fluctuation correction in the random-phase approximation. We find that the equality between the incommensurability and the hole concentration is reproduced at low frequencies in the underdoped regime. We also obtain the downward dispersion for the spin response and predict its doping dependence for further experimental testing, as well as a proportionality between the low-energy incommensurability and the resonance energy. Our results suggest a common origin for the incommensuration and the resonance peak based on the Fermi-surface topology and the d-wave symmetry.

Abstract:On the assumption that doping creates holes on the O rather than the Cu sites, a new model to describe the CuO2 planes in the high Tc superconductor is proposed. It is shown that the RVB state of the holes on Cu sites at half-filling will lead to an effective attraction of the holes on the O sites which is responsible for superconductivity. Specific heat and susceptibility are discussed briefly and are consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:On the basis of the t-t(')-J model, we investigate in the U(1) slave-boson framework the possibility of the d-wave spinon-pairing state as the pseudogap state in the underdoped cuprates. We calculate the single-particle spectral functions and density of states at different doping levels and different temperatures. We compare our calculations with the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies and tunneling experiments, and find they are consistent with each other.
The Phase Diagram of High-Tc Cuprates

Abstract:The detailed structure of the $T \times doping$ phase diagram of hole doped High-Tc superconducting cuprates is investigated from the perspective of a recently proposed comprehensive theory for these materials. Our theory is compared to Anderson's RVB theory for High-$T_c$ cuprates and it is demonstrated that the ground-eigenstate of our theory's Hamiltonian is a RVB-like state. From the Hamiltonian we derive the thermodynamic potential, as a function of convenient order parameters, through a method whose stability is carefully demonstrated. From this, we obtain analytic expressions for the transition lines delimiting the Néel phase, $T_N(x)$, the Spin-Glass phase, $T_{g}(x)$ and the CDW Charge Ordered phase, $T_{co}(x)$. These results, along with the previously derived expressions for the transition lines delimiting the Superconducting phase, $T_C(x)$, the Pseudogap and Strange Metal phases, $T^*(x)$ and the Fermi Liquid phase, $T_{FL}(x)$ are in excellent agreement with the experimental data from the cuprates. Our study reveals, in particular, the complementary role, which is played by the mechanisms responsible for the onset of superconducting (SC) and Spin-Glass (SG) phases in these materials. The absence of SG phases in electron doped High-Tc superconducting cuprates, strongly suggests a different SC mechanism should operate in those materials

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism by which d wave superconductivity in the cuprates emerges and is optimized by doping the Mott insulator is one of the major outstanding problems in condensed-matter physics. Our high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of the high-transition temperature (Tc) superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta show that samples with different Tc values in the low doping regime follow a remarkably universal d wave low-energy excitation spectrum, indicating a doping-independent nodal gap. We demonstrate that Tc instead correlates with the fraction of the Fermi surface over which the samples exhibit the universal spectrum. Optimal Tc is achieved when all parts of the Fermi surface follow this universal behavior. Increasing the temperature above Tc turns the universal spectrum into an arc of gapless excitations, whereas overdoping breaks down the universal nodal behavior.

Abstract:One of the biggest puzzles concerning the cuprate high temperature superconductors is what determines the maximum transition temperature (Tc,max), which varies from less than 30 to above 130K in different compounds. Despite this dramatic variation, a robust trend is that within each family, the double-layer compound always has higher Tc,max than the single-layer counterpart. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the electronic structure of four cuprate parent compounds belonging to two different families. We find that within each family, the double layer compound has a much smaller charge transfer gap size (∆CT), indicating a clear anticorrelation between ∆CT and Tc,max. These results suggest that the charge transfer gap plays a key role in the superconducting physics of cuprates, which shed important new light on the high Tc mechanism from doped Mott insulator perspective.
