Abstract:Newly discovered boryl sulfides and N-borylthioamides are shown to serve as neutral sources of sulfur nucleophiles in substitutions reactions. For example, heating of diMe-Imd-BH(SPh)(2) with benzyl bromides, primary bromides, or acid chlorides provides the corresponding thioethers or thioesters in high yields. Likewise, N-phenyltetrazole thioethers/esters are made from a readily available N-borylthionotetrazole. The formation of the boryl sulfide and its onward nucleophilic substitution can be telescoped down to a one-pot reaction whose components are an NHC borane (NHC-BH3), a disulfide, and an electrophile.

Abstract:A general method for one‐pot synthesis of thioamides is developed through a three‐component reaction involving chlorohydrocarbon, amide and elemental sulfur. Such a strategy does not only avoid residual transition metal in the product but also prevent the generation of C−N coupling by‐product. The latter is prone to be generated when alkane halide and amine are present. With the protocol proposed in this work, both alkyl and aryl thioamides can be obtained in moderate to excellent yields with a high tolerance of various functional groups. External oxidants are not required in the reaction. In addition, the reaction mechanisms are addressed using a combination of controlling experiments and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:The synthesis of monocarborane sulfonamides is reported. The methodology relies on coupling of the anionic {CB 11 } boron cluster to sulfonyl azides. Under rhodium catalysis and with the assistance of a pyridine or pyrimidine directing group at the C1 position, the cluster undergoes B−H activation. Conditions have been identified that lead to B2‐selective mono‐sulfonamidation with concomitant loss of N 2 . The protocol requires no additional ligand, oxidant or base and enables B−N bond formation with various monocarborane and sulfonyl azide inputs. The new products possess the structure [1‐(heteroaryl)‐2‐(NHSO 2 Ar)−CB 11 H 10 ] − and have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. In addition, three solid state structures confirm the particular B2 substitution pattern. Furthermore, the stoichiometric reaction of the pyridinyl monocarborane precursor with Rh(III) affords a cyclometalated complex with a direct B−Rh bond that has also been characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

Abstract:Reactions of 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene-borane (diMe-Imd-BH3) and related NHC-boranes with diaryl and diheteroaryl disulfides provide diverse NHC-boryl monosulfides (diMe-Imd-BH2SAr) and NHC-boryl disulfides (diMe-Imd-BH(SAr)(2)). Heating in the dark with 1 equiv of disulfide favors monosulfide formation, while irradiation with 2 equiv disulfide favors disulfide formation. With heteroaryl disulfides, the NHC-borane in the primary NHC-boryl sulfide product migrates from sulfur to nitrogen to give new products with a thioamide substructure. Most substitution reactions are thought to proceed through radical chains in which homolytic substitution of a disulfide by an NHC-boryl radical is a key step. However, with electrophilic disulfides under dark conditions, a competing ionic path may also be possible.

Abstract:Conjugated 1-bromo or 1-iodo-1,3-dienes bearing a sulfide substituent have been synthesized via 1,2-sulfur migration from propargylic thioethers upon activation with NIS or NBS. The reaction generally proceeds with high control over the regio- and diastereoselectivity. Highly substituted thiophenes and selenophenes are easily obtained from the generated dienes.

Abstract:A novel strategy for C–S bond formation is developed. This reaction utilizes a low-cost, air- and moisture-insensitive nickel pre-catalyst to execute a decarbonylative reaction of acid anhydrides, followed by reaction with an odorless and manageable carbon disulfide, to synthesize various thioesters and thioethers. The process accommodated various acid anhydrides and yielded products in good to excellent quantities.

Abstract:Abstract Organic sulfides form the core scaffold of a wide range of pharmaceuticals, natural products, and materials, and serve as key intermediates in synthesis. Prior methods to organic sulfides require the use of transition metal (TM) catalysts, prefunctionalized or chelating group-containing substrates, and elevated reaction temperatures. A general TM-free C–H thiolation protocol using readily accessible sulfur source is highly desirable. Herein, we disclose a direct C(sp)–, C(sp2)–, and C(sp3)–H thiolation reaction using β-sulfinylesters as the versatile sulfur source. The key step of this protocol is chemoselective C–S bond cleavage of the sulfonium salts that is in situ formed from the corresponding (hetero)arenes, alkenes, alkynes, and 1,3-dicarboxyl compounds with β-sulfinylesters. The successful capture of acrylate byproduct supports a retro-Michael reaction mechanism. This method is expected to be used widely because of several advantageous aspects including TM-free, mild reaction conditions, and broad substrate scope including drug molecules.

Abstract:Cyclopropylmethyl sulfides react with N‐fluorosulfonimide (NFSI) or molecular iodine, enabling C–S cleavage to generate cyclopropylcarbinyl cations, which evolve through cyclopropane ring‐opening reactions into homoallyl cations suitable to react with nucleophiles present in the reaction media. This desulfurative cleavage of cyclopropylmethyl thioethers under non‐acidic conditions facilitates homoallylation of N‐based nucleophiles such as alkyl or aryl amines as well as sulfonimides through a one‐pot protocol in one or two steps depending on the nucleophile. The reaction is initiated by a halogen‐sulfur bond that causes C–S bond cleavage. Moreover, the reaction with iodine proceeds through homoallyl iodide intermediates.

Abstract:A protocol was described for obtaining a variety of substituted thiophenes with functional potential via metal-free dehydration and sulfur cyclization of alkynols with elemental sulfur (S-8) or EtOCS2K in moderate-to-good yields. The method provides the base-free generation of a trisulfur radical anion (S-3(center dot-)) and its addition to alkynes as an initiator. This research broadens the applications of S-3(center dot-) in the synthesis of sulfur-containing heterocycles.

Abstract:Abstract An efficient cobalt‐catalyzed redox‐neutral sulfonylative coupling to afford (hetero)aryl alkyl sulfones from boronic acids, ammonium salts and potassium metabisulfite has been realized. Commercially available and air‐stable CoCl 2 , in combination with phenanthroline ligand, is sufficient to achieve rapid and high‐yielding conversion of the reactants into the corresponding sulfones. This practical transformation proceeds smoothly through C−N bond cleavage under redox‐neutral catalytic conditions and shows broad functional‐group tolerance. Other carbon based electrophiles, including diaryliodonium salts, heteroaryl halides, and carbonates were compatible. Further transformation of aryl alkyl sulfones then allows conversion into olefins, alkenyl sulfones and halogenated sulfones, respectively, in a one‐pot process.

Abstract:A by-product-catalyzed redox-neutral process has been established through tandem sulfenylation/deiodination/aromatization of cyclic alkenyl iodides with sulfonyl hydrazides. In the absence of external catalysts and additives a range of 4-iodo-1,2-dihydronaphthalenes reacted with sulfonyl hydrazides to give structurally diverse 2-naphthyl thioethers in good yields. Mechanistic studies showed that at an early stage sulfonyl hydrazides decomposed completely to thiosulfonates and disulfides and at a late stage the resulting thiosulfonates underwent tandem sulfenylation/deiodination/aromatization with 4-iodo-1,2-dihydronaphthalenes involving a [1,5]-sigmatropic hydrogen shift. Importantly, iodine was generated as a by-product from 4-iodo-1,2-dihydronaphthalenes upon heating and served as a catalyst for the decomposition of sulfonyl hydrazides and subsequent formation of 2-naphthyl thioethers.

Abstract:An efficient method for making 1,2-thiofunctionalized products via the difunctionalization of aromatic alkenes was developed. In this method, cheap and readily available hydrochloric acid was used to promote 1,2-thiofunctionalization of aryl alkenes with N-arylsulfenylphthalimide and different types of nucleophiles. Importantly, extension of nucleophiles can reach aryl ethers, indoles, and carboxylic acids with good reactivity. This practical and convenient method has broad substrate scope and high yields under metal-free and mild conditions. Furthermore, we achieved conversion and application for making sulfoxide and sulfone by oxidation.

Abstract:Without any metal catalyst, an efficient transformation of a variety of sulfonyl hydrazides into the corresponding thiosulfonates mediated by NBS/DABCO under air is developed. The method utilizes mild reaction conditions, affords moderate to good yields of product, and tolerates a broad substrate scope. A plausible mechanism is proposed for the decomposition of the sulfonyl hydrazides and the construction of S(O2)–S bonds to form thiosulfonates.

Abstract:Herein, we present an electrochemical desulfurative protocol for the formation of alkyl boronic esters from thioethers. The paired electrolytic transformation utilizes HBpin as coupling partner and proceeds with inert electrodes. The transformation features mild conditions, broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, as illustrated by late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutical compounds and natural products. Furthermore, the protocol is scalable, successfully producing gram quantities of borylated product.
