Abstract:In this work we report the characterization of perovskite solar cells with mesoscopic TiO2/Al2O3/NiO/carbon architecture by analyzing the dependence of photovoltaic parameters on temperature and illumination intensity. This perovskite device shows impressive power conversion efficiency at room temperature (>14 %) and at low temperature of 80 K (>5 %). This enables unequivocal identification of the contribution of CH3NH3PbI3 to construction of the built‐in electric field, and thus, the temperature dependent photovoltaic parameters. The typical feature of this type solar cell is that open‐circuit voltage follows behaviour of the dielectric constant of CH3NH3PbI3. In addition, the dependence of current on light intensity shifts from the space‐charge‐limited to diffusion‐limited mechanisms as increasing temperature. By using the observed significant short‐circuit current density of 12.76 mA cm−2 at 80 K the exciton‐binding energy of CH3NH3PbI3 is evaluated to be less 6.9 meV in an operating device, which can be further verified with Elliott's formula. A mesoscopic CH3NH3PbI3 based perovskite solar cell based on mesoscopic TiO2/Al2O3/NiO/carbon architecture deliveries ∼13 mA cm−2 current at extremely low temperature 80 K.

Efficient Thermal Conductance in Organometallic Perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 Films

Abstract:Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices have shown great promise for solar conversion and other optoelectronic applications, but their long-term performance instability is regarded as a major obstacle to their widespread deployment. Previous works have shown that the ultralow thermal conductivity and inefficient heat spreading might put an intrinsic limit on the lifetime of perovskite devices. Here, we report the observation of a remarkably efficient thermal conductance, with conductivity of 11.2 +/- 0.8 W m^-1 K^-1 at room temperature, in densely-packed perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 films, via noncontact time-domain thermal reflectance measurements. The temperature-dependent experiments suggest the important roles of organic cations and structural phase transitions, which are further confirmed by temperature-dependent Raman spectra. The thermal conductivity at room temperature observed here is over one order of magnitude larger than that in the early report, suggesting that perovskite device performance will not be limited by thermal stability.

Abstract:Reaction temperature has been demonstrated to play a critical role in the crystallization and quality control of MAPbI3 perovskite films (single cation/halide perovskite; MA: methylamine, CH3NH3), which should also be true for mixed cation/halide perovskite systems. However, there is a lack of direct comparative studies on the effect of reaction temperature on the film quality and cell performance of various perovskite systems. Herein we have systematically investigated the effect of reaction temperature (controlled by changing the temperature of ammonium salt solutions in this work) on film quality and cell performance of single and mixed cation/halide perovskite systems, namely (FAPbI3)1-x(MAPbBr3)x, FAxMA1-xPbI3 and MAPbI3 (FA: formamidine, CH(NH2)2) by means of absorption/photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and various electrical measurements. The results show that an appropriate increase in the reaction temperature is favorable for obtaining high-quality perovskite films and improving cell performance, while an excessively high reaction temperature can cause the generation of photovoltaic non-active phase and the reduction of cell performance. In addition, the mixed-cation/halide perovskite systems are more susceptible to reaction temperature relative to the single cation/halide perovskite with respect to phase purity and grain size. The optimal ammonium salt solution temperatures for preparing (FAPbI3)1-x(MAPbBr3)x, FAxMA1-xPbI3 and MAPbI3 films and corresponding solar cells were found to be around 30, 30 and 55 °C, respectively, in our two-step deposition process. The (FAPbI3)1-x(MAPbBr3)x based device prepared from the ammonium precursor solution at 30 °C delivered the highest efficiency of 18.09%, which can be attributed to the reduced defect density in the perovskite film and the accelerated charge extraction at interfaces. This work highlights the distinct optimal reaction temperatures for different perovskite systems in the two-step deposition process and provides a simple thermodynamic regulation method to improve cell performance.

Abstract:Stability and lead toxicity issues of inorganic organic halide lead perovskite solar cells have significantly limited their commercial applications. The nontoxic strontium (Sr) can be a good candidate to reduce lead utilization due to their similar ionic radiuses. Here we uncovered the dramatic influence of Sr element substitution on the optoelectronic properties of perovskite films, including up-shifting conduction band edge energy level, increasing exciton binding energy and trap density states due to the isoelectronic impurity of electric neutral substitution. The incorporation of a small content of Sr (a≤0.05) into the CH3NH3SraPb1−aI3−xClx crystal lattice can act positively impact on material thermal stability and solar cell device output voltage (~1.11V). An overall highly photovoltaic efficiency of ~16.3% was achieved with a planar n-i-p structure of ITO/compact TiO2/CH3NH3SraPb1−aI3−xClx/spiroMeOTAD/Au. Impedance characterization reveals an increased trap states induced by substitution Pb with Sr in the hybrid halide perovskites, and thus provide a deep understanding of the role of external elements on device physics.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite materials, such as CH3NH3PbX3 (X = I, Br), have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their excellent properties such as a widely tunable bandgap, high optical absorption coefficient, excellent power conversion efficiency, etc. The exposure of perovskite solar cells and photovoltaic devices to heat can significantly degrade their performance. Therefore, elucidating their temperature-dependent optical properties is essential for performance optimization of perovskite solar cells. We synthesized CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3) single crystals through the polymer-controlled nucleation route and investigated the optical properties and molecular structure evolution of them with temperature. Through temperature evolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, we found that the fluorescence intensity was greatly affected by increasing the temperature, with an asymmetric PL profile suggesting that more captured excitons undergo radiative complexation. The optical photographs showed that the color of MAPbBr3 single crystals faded. Raman spectroscopy revealed that during the heating process, the structure of MAPbBr3 was still preserved at 90 °C since all of the Raman bands were very clear. When the temperature increased to 120 °C, the Raman bands of the internal modes became very weak. On further heating, the inorganic framework on sample's surface started to disintegrate above 210 °C. During the heating process, the PL spectra exhibited significant changes in spectral intensity, peak position and Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM). The PL spectral intensity decreased abruptly with increasing temperature. The peak position was blue shifted with increasing temperature, and the peak shape showed an obvious asymmetry. The FMWH of the PL spectra was gradually broadened with the increase in the temperature, and there was a sharp increase from 270 °C to 300 °C. These variations in the PL spectra with temperature indicate that the optical properties of MAPbBr3 are greatly affected by temperature, which in turn affects the application of MAPbBr3 in fields such as optical devices. These results may be instructive for the application of MAPbBr3.

Abstract:Organo-lead halide perovskites show excellent optoelectronic properties; however, the unexpected inconsistency in forward-backward I-V characteristics remains a problem for fabricating solar panels. Here we have investigated the reasons behind this "hysteresis" by following the changes in photocurrent and photoluminescence under electric field poling in transverse CH3NH3PbI3-based devices from 300 to 10 K. We found that the hysteresis disappears at cryogenic temperatures, indicating the "freeze-out" of the ionic diffusion contribution. When the same device is cooled under continuous poling, the built-in electric field from ion accumulation brings significant photovoltaic effect even at 10 K. From the change of photoluminescence upon polling, we found a second dipole-related mechanism which enhances radiative recombination upon the alignment of the organic cations. The ionic origin of hysteresis was also verified by applying a magnetic field to affect the ion diffusion. These findings reveal the coexistence of ionic and dipole-related mechanisms for the hysteresis in hybrid perovskites.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of initial transient current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of planar perovskite solar cell by one-step solution process is investigated. An S-shaped I-V characteristic emerges in response to low temperature and the photovoltaic parameters drop dramatically. This is mainly attributed to the increasing amount of negative charges accumulating in the TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 interface region and the reduced built-in field separating the photo-generated carriers in the absorber layer. The influence of negative charge accumulation can be represented by two extra diodes that are in series with a conventional solar cell circuit model at low temperature whereas it acts as a resistor with low resistivity above room temperature. These findings help to understand the charge transport mechanism in perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:We report investigations on the influences of post-deposition treatments on the performance of solution-processed methylammonium lead triiodide (CH3NH3PbI3)-based planar solar cells. The prepared films were stored in pure N2 at room temperature or annealed in pure O2 at room temperature, 45°C, 65°C and 85°C for 12 hours prior to the deposition of the metal electrodes. It is found that annealing in O2 leads to substantial increase in the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the devices. Furthermore, strong dependence on the annealing temperature for the PCEs of the devices suggests that a thermally activated process may underlie the observed phenomenon. It is believed that the annealing process may facilitate the diffusion of O2 into the spiro-MeOTAD for inducing p-doping of the hole transport material. Furthermore, the process can result in lowering the localized state density at the grain boundaries as well as the bulk of perovskite. Utilizing thermal assisted O2 annealing, high efficiency devices with good reproducibility were attained. A PCE of 15.4% with an open circuit voltage (VOC) 1.04 V, short circuit current density (JSC) 23 mA/cm2 and fill factor 0.64 had been achieved for our champion device.

Abstract:Hybrid organometal halide perovskites have been demonstrated to have outstanding performance as semiconductors for solar energy conversion. Further improvement of the efficiency and stability of these devices requires a deeper understanding of their intrinsic photophysical properties. Here, the structural and optical properties of high-quality single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3 from room temperature to 5 K are investigated. X-ray diffraction reveals an extremely sharp transition at 163 K from a twinned tetragonal I4/mcm phase to a low-temperature phase characterized by complex twinning and possible frozen disorder. Above the transition temperature, the photoluminescence is in agreement with a band-edge transition, explaining the outstanding performances of the solar cells. Whereas below the transition temperature, three different excitonic features arise, one of which is attributed to a free-exciton and the other two to bound excitons (BEs). The BEs are characterized by a decay dynamics of about 5 mu s and by a saturation phenomenon at high power excitation. The long lifetime and the saturation effect make us attribute these low temperature features to bound triplet excitons. This results in a description of the room temperature recombination as being due to spontaneous band-to-band radiative transitions, whereas a diffusion-limited behavior is expected for the low-temperature range.
Precursor solution temperature dependence of the optical constants, band gap and Urbach tail in organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskite films

Abstract:The band gap energy and optical constants are important parameters for solar cell design. Here, organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 films (about 140nm thick) were prepared by vapor deposition at precursor solution temperatures of 30 degrees C, 50 degrees C, 70 degrees C, and 90 degrees C, respectively. By fitting the ellipsometric spectra in the photon energy range of 0.496-4eV, we can find that the optical constants, absorption coefficients, and dielectric function strongly depend on the precursor temperature. Due to the change of electronic band structures and spin-orbit coupling, the band gap energy can be modulated from 1.634eV to 1.516eV with different precursor temperatures. As band gap energy increases, the Urbach energy decreases with each precursor temperature. The film with a precursor temperature of 70 degrees C shows the lowest Urbach tail energy (107 meV). The Urbach tail effects can be ascribed to the cumulative effect of impurities, the degree of disorder, and electron-phonon interaction. This study is helpful for understanding the intrinsic optical properties of perovskite films fabricated under different precursor temperatures, so as to provide important information for understanding the device physics and fabrication of high performance perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:In this paper, the temperature-dependent electronic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals are investigated. The dynamic current-time measurement results at different temperatures directly demonstrate that the electrical properties of the perovskite single crystal are dependent on the work temperature. We find that the Poole-Frankel conduction mechanism fits the current-voltage curves at small bias voltage (0–1 V) under darkness, which is mainly attributed to the surface defect states. The capability of carriers de-trapping from defects varies with different work temperatures, resulting in an increased current as the temperature increases under both darkness and illumination. In addition, the different transient photocurrent responses of incident light at two wavelengths (470 nm, 550 nm) further confirm the existence of defect states on the single crystal surface.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of TiO2 based organo-lead halide perovskite solar cells has already surpassed 20% by utilizing low temperature solution processing techniques. However, the electronic structures and exciton/electron transport mechanism at the TiO2/perovskite interface are not fully understood. In this report, simple planar TiO2/perovskite heterojunctions are fabricated with different TiO2 compact layers followed by studies of their effect on the charge extraction/transport properties of the deposited heterojunctions. Efficient perovskite solar cells based on these TiO2/perovskite heterojunctions [with CH3NH3PbI3 and FA0.81MA0.15Pb(I0.836Br0.15)3 films] have been fabricated and the devices exhibit reproducible efficiency values and good stability. The impact of interfacial potential barrier and TiO2 surface properties on photogenerated carrier transport mechanisms and overall power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells is investigated by using comprehensive electrical and optical characterization methods such as SEM, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, TRPL, TAS and TPD. Obtained results indicate that efficient device can be fabricated by optimizing of TiO2 annealing conditions.
How Temperature Impacts Material Properties and Photovoltaic Performance of Mixed-Halide Perovskite via Light-induced Ion Migration

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites applied for solar cells have gained significant attention due to their rapid growth power conversion efficiency. However, its intrinsic instability, stemming from its ionic nature, hampers the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. The scope of this paper is to extend the characterization of light-induced ion migration via temperature-dependent measurement based on the polaron-invoked ion migration model. The investigation reveals that light-induced phase segregation intensifies with rising temperature, as indicated by stoichiometry variation and crystal compression. This intensification facilitates the formation of iodide-rich domains within the perovskite film. The formation of such domains is correlated with promoted carrier recombination in perovskite solar cells, as observed through electrochemical impedance spectra. Consequently, the facilitated carrier recombination process leads to a notable decline in the power conversion efficiency of the perovskite solar cell, reducing to <20% of its original value as the temperature increases from 300 K to 500 K. Moreover, the intensified ion migration due to heat also impacts the stability of both the perovskite material and the whole device. Extended illumination duration and high temperature lead to the decomposition of perovskite, resulting in the formation of insulated PbI2 that deteriorates the performance of the perovskite solar cell. This degradation is irreversible and results in rapid decomposition at high temperatures, as evidenced by the deterioration of perovskite solar cells within 30 minutes of operation at 500 K. The temperature-dependent characterization reveals a cascading process originating from light-induced ion migration, followed by phase segregation and iodide-rich domain formation. These processes significantly impact the perovskite solar cell in terms of carrier transport/recombination behavior and operational stability.

Abstract:Photoelectric conversion efficiency of organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells has been rapidly raised and attracted great attention in recent years. The quality of perovskite films is vital for the performance of devices. We used the anti-solvent method to prepare CH3NH3PbI3 thin films by spin coating and dried them at various temperature to transform adduct MAI center dot PbI2 center dot DMSO into CH3NH3PbI3 . We researched in detail on the relationship between surface morphology of MAPbI(3) thin films fabricated by the antisolvent method and various drying temperature. We found that surface roughness and grain size of CH3NH3PbI3 films together increased with increasing drying temperature. The larger grain size could efficiently reduce crystal boundaries which is advantageous for the suppression of photo-induced charge carrier recombination resulting in increase of FF. However, increase of surface roughness resulted in larger contact area at interface which might produce more tarp states and poorer wettability of HTM solution leading in decrease of Jsc . Surface morphology of MAPbI(3) layer on the performance of solar cell devices is also an important research issue. By optimizing the drying temperature to 60 degrees C, the highest efficiency of 14.4% was achieved for the CH3NH3PbI3 -based solar cell devices. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Pre-exposure of perovskite solar cells to light or heat can greatly improve their performance, yet the underlying physical mechanisms are still obscure. Herein we systematically investigate the influences of light soaking and thermal phase transition on charge transport dynamics in two-step fabricated CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells. By applying the time-of-flight (TOF) measurement under various light illumination times, we not only confirm the existence of nondispersive charge transport in perovskite solar cells but also directly observe a shallow trap filling process and thus increased charge mobility upon light soaking. We further employ the delay-time-dependent charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage (CELIV) technique to reveal that dispersive bimolecular recombination is also largely inhibited. On the other hand, we conduct temperature-dependent TOF and electrical conductivity studies and surprisingly, find a rapid change of both hole and electron mobilities during phase transition from tetragonal to cubic crystalline structures at around 310-330 K until reaching a balance of charge transport.
Quantification of Light-Enhanced Ionic Transport in Lead Iodide Perovskite Thin Films and Its Solar Cell Applications.

Abstract:Ionic transport in organometal halide perovskites is of vital importance because it dominates anomalous phenomena in perovskite solar cells, from hysteresis to switchable photovoltaic effects. However, excited state ionic transport under illumination has remained elusive, although it is essential for understanding the unusual light-induced effects (light-induced self-poling, photo-induced halide segregation and slow photoconductivity response) in organometal halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. Here, we quantitatively demonstrate light-enhanced ionic transport in CH3NH3PbI3 over a wide temperature range of 17-295 K, which reveals a reduction in ionic transport activation energy by approximately a factor of five (from 0.82 to 0.15 eV) under illumination. The pure ionic conductance is obtained by separating it from the electronic contribution in cryogenic galvanostatic and voltage-current measurements. On the basis of these findings, we design a novel light-assisted method of catalyzing ionic interdiffusion between CH3NH3I and PbI2 stacking layers in sequential deposition perovskite synthesis. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate a significant reduction of PbI2 residue in the optimized CH3NH3PbI3 thin film produced via light-assisted sequential deposition, and the resulting solar cell efficiency is increased by over 100% (7.5%-15.7%) with little PbI2 residue. This new method enables fine control of the reaction depth in perovskite synthesis and, in turn, supports light-enhanced ionic transport.
Influence of drying temperature on morphology of MAPbI$_3$ thin films and the performance of solar cells

Abstract:Photoelectric conversion efficiency of organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells has been rapidly raised and attracted great attention in recent years. The quality of perovskite films is vital for the performance of devices. We used the anti-solvent method to prepare CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ thin films by spin coating and dried them at various temperature to transform adduct MAI.PbI$_2$.DMSO into CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We researched in detail on the relationship between surface morphology of MAPbI$_3$ thin films fabricated by the anti-solvent method and various drying temperature. We found that surface roughness and grain size of CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ films together increased with increasing drying temperature. The larger grain size could efficiently reduce crystal boundaries which is advantageous for the suppression of photo-induced charge carrier recombination resulting in increase of FF. However, increase of surface roughness resulted in larger contact area at interface which might produce more tarp states and poorer wettability of HTM solution leading in decrease of Jsc. Surface morphology of MAPbI3 layer on the performance of solar cell devices is also an important research issue. By optimizing the drying temperature to 60 oC, the highest efficiency of 14.4% was achieved for the CH3NH3PbI3-based solar cell devices.

Abstract:We present the analytic workflow to understand the temperature and illumination-intensity-dependent recombination of the photoinduced charge carriers in organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells based on methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) thin films. The temperature-dependent, open-circuit voltage analysis reveals that the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers predominantly occurs at our PEDOT:PSS/CH3NH3PbI3 interface as well as in the depletion region. Taking into account the structural phase transition in CH3NH3PbI3 films, as confirmed using temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction spectra and dielectric constant measurements, the illumination-dependent short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage analysis shows both bimolecular and trap-assisted recombination is dominant in our solution-processed perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have emerged as an up-and-coming contender for photovoltaic devices owing to their exceptional photovoltaic properties. However, current research predominantly concentrates on their performance under ambient conditions at room temperature. In this work, we delve into the novel territory by investigating MAPbI3-based and FAPbI3-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in the temperature range of 300 to 150 K. Remarkable efficiency enhancements of nearly 5% and 20% were obtained at 250 and 210 K, respectively. However, further decreasing the temperature impairs the photovoltaic performance. We propose an underlying mechanism influencing the performance change in perovskite devices at low temperatures by examining the temperature-dependent ultraviolet-visible and photoluminescence spectra results. At the beginning of the cooling process, from 300 to 250 K for MAPbI3 and from 300 to 210 K for FAPbI3, the performance enhancement stems primarily from the enhanced open-circuit voltage by the tuned band gap of the perovskite films. Further lowering the temperature would change the perovskite structure, impairing the performance of PSCs. FAPbI3-based PSCs show a better tolerance in low temperatures owing to the more stable perovskite crystal structure. The present findings offer valuable theoretical guidance for preparing outstanding PSCs for low-temperature applications.
Optical Properties of Organometallic Perovskite: An ab initio Study using Relativistic GW Correction and Bethe-Salpeter Equation

Abstract:In the development of highly efficient photovoltaic cells, solid perovskite systems have demonstrated unprecedented promise, with the figure of merit exceeding nineteen percent of efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the optical and vibrational properties of organometallic cubic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 using first-principles calculations. For accurate theoretical description, we go beyond conventional density functional theory (DFT), and calculated optical conductivity using relativist quasi-particle (GW) correction. Incorporating these many-body effects, we further solve Bethe-Salpeter equations (BSE) for excitons, and found enhanced optical conductivity near the gap edge. Due to the presence of organic methylammonium cations near the center of the perovskite cell, the system is sensitive to low energy vibrational modes. We estimate the phonon modes of CH3NH3PbI3 using small displacement approach, and further calculate the infrared absorption (IR) spectra. Qualitatively, our calculations of low-energy phonon frequencies are in good agreement with our terahertz measurements. Therefore, for both energy scales (around 2 eV and 0-20 meV), our calculations reveal the importance of many-body effects and their contributions to the desirable optical properties in the cubic organometallic perovskites system.
