Abstract:A novel special optical fiber, which is very sensitive to magnetic field, is proposed. The two beam lights counter-propagating in this kind of fiber can generate large nonreciprocal phase shift. It can be used in ultra-low magnetic field detection. In this paper, the related theory is derived in detail. The influence of fiber parameters on the effect is simulated and analyzed. It is proved that a magnetic field sensor with pTesla-level precision could be demonstrated with this kind of special fiber in this paper.

Abstract:We investigated the nonreciprocity induced by an orthogonal magnetic field (OMF) in a single-mode fiber coil and expressions for the propagation constant of light waves in the bent fiber are deduced. Coils with different radiuses are put into depolarized interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (D-IFOGs) for experimental verification. Theories, simulations and experimental results show that the OMF induced nonreciprocal phase error is closely related to the bending radius and the generated magnetic drift in D-IFOGs is linear to the amplitude of the OMF.

Abstract:A magnetic field measurement with enhanced sensitivity based on the Vernier effect of a dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a cascaded giant magnetostrictive material-fiber Bragg grating (GMM-FBG) and Monel-400-fiber Bragg grating (Monel-400-FBG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The OEO loop incorporates two reflected signals from the dual FBGs, serving as separate light sources injected into two paths with distinct fiber lengths. The dispersion introduced in the loop allows the wavelength shift of the GMM-FBG to be translated into a frequency shift of the microwave signal within the OEO cavity. As the GMM-FBG's central wavelength shifts with the magnetic field variation, the change of the monitoring OEO frequency enables precise measurement of magnetic field information. Diverging from conventional single-loop configurations, the proposed OEO generates the Vernier effect due to the length disparity between the two loops. Consequently, by monitoring the frequency variations in the envelope of the OEO's micro-wave signal, the sensitivity scale factor for sensing information is significantly enhanced. Experimental findings reveal a magnetic field sensitivity of approximately 201 Hz/mT for the single loop, increasing to 8 kHz/mT with the application of the Vernier effect, which represents a 40-fold improvement. Furthermore, a Monel-400 alloy hosts the reference FBG, possessing a similar thermal expansion coefficient to GMM. This design mitigates temperature crosstalk in magnetic field measurements. Compared to utilizing an unprocessed reference FBG, the magnetic field error induced by temperature is reduced from 2.46 to 0.06 mT. Additionally, flexible sensitivity scale factors can be achieved by designing the varied path length differences. Experimental results demonstrate magnetic field sensitivities of 12.7 and 21.9 kHz/mT, with increases of 64 and 109 times, respectively.

Abstract:Based on the Pockels effect of lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystal, a resonant magnetic field sensor with multi-loop antenna and segmented modulation electrode loaded with LiNbO3 has been designed, fabricated and experimentally demonstrated. The resonant multi-loop antenna and the segmented modulation electrode structure are used to enhance the magnetic field induced voltage, thereby enhancing the electro-optic (EO) modulation and improving the sensitivity of the sensor. By twisting the 1/2 beat length polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) at the front end of the input PMF collimator 90 degrees to ensure the sensor has a static operating point of π/2, so that it can operate in the near linear region. The experimental results indicate that when input magnetic field frequency is 500 MHz, there is a linear relationship between the input and output of the sensor, the minimum and maximum detectable magnetic field are 36.72 dBμA/m and 181.12 dBμA/m respectively, resulting in a linear dynamic range (LDR) of approximately 144 dB. The sensitivity of the sensor is 0.974 dBm/(dBμA/m), and the linear correlation coefficient is 0.99825. All these results indicate that the developed sensor has the advantages of higher sensitivity and LDR which is suitable for the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) measurement.

Abstract:We show how to measure a steady-state magnon population in the magnetostatic mode of a ferromagnet or ferrimagnet, such as yttrium iron garnet. We adopt an optomechanical approach and utilize the magnetoelasticity of the ferromagnet. The magnetostrictive force dispersively couples magnons to the deformation displacement of the ferromagnet, which is proportional to the magnon population. By further coupling the mechanical displacement to an optical cavity that is resonantly driven by a weak laser, the magnetostrictively induced displacement can be sensed by measuring the phase quadrature of the optical field. The phase shows excellent linear dependence on the magnon population for a not very large population and can thus be used as a "magnometer" to measure the magnon population. We further study the effect of thermal noises and find a high signal-to-noise ratio even at room temperature. At cryogenic temperatures, the resolution of magnon excitation numbers is essentially limited by the vacuum fluctuations of the phase, which can be significantly improved by using a squeezed light.

Abstract:In this article, a high-sensitivity magnetometer with paraffin-coated Cs vapor cell based on amplitude modulated nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (AM NMOR) is presented. The magnetometer has a wide dynamic range which covers the geomagnetic field range and its operation is demonstrated in an unshielded environment. The sensitivity of the magnetometer has reached sub-pT level. The main limitation to the resonance linewidth and the sensitivity is nonlinear Zeeman splitting.

Abstract:Magnetic field detection is of significant importance in various fields, including military, industrial, and power transmission systems. In this paper, we propose a novel ultra-sensitive photonic crystal fiber (PCF) magnetic field sensor based on the Vernier effect, employing two parallel Sagnac loops. Since magnetic field detection relies on the magneto-optical effect of magnetic fluids, all air holes in the PCF are assumed to filled with magnetic fluids. By inserting two slightly different lengths of PCFs into two parallel Sagnac loops, the Vernier effect can be excited to improve the sensitivity of magnetic field detection. The sensing characteristics of the PCF magnetic field sensor are theoretically studied using the finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the influences of the wavelength and magnetic field intensity on the sensing performance are also analyzed. The results show that the sensitivity and resolution of the PCF magnetic field sensor can reach 11.9 nm/Oe and 8.4×10-3 Oe, respectively, within the magnetic field intensity range of 80-150 Oe. To our best knowledge, the proposed magnetic field sensor exhibits the highest sensitivity among existing magnetic field sensors based on optical fiber interferometers. The proposed magnetic field sensor possesses ultra-high sensitivity and resolution, which exhibits good application prospects in the field of magnetic field detection.

Abstract:We study optical detection of magnetic resonance of a ferrimagnetic sphere resonator, which is strongly coupled to a microwave loop gap resonator. Optical fibers are employed for coupling the sphere resonator with light in the telecom band. We find that magnetic resonance can be optically detected in the region of anti-crossing between the loop gap and the ferrimagnetic resonances. By measuring the response time of the optical detection we rule out the possibility that microwave induced heating is responsible for the optical detectability.

Abstract:In this study, we introduce a high-performance magneto-optical sensor that features enhanced amplitude and sensitivity, achieved through guided-mode resonance (GMR) excitations in an aluminum antimonide slab. This advancement is facilitated by a square, periodically arranged nanorod structure comprising dielectric materials. The electromagnetic field distributions were obtained along with the transmission spectra to elucidate the GMR mode in our proposed structure, thereby highlighting the enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) signal in the transmitted mode and the corresponding sensing performance. The findings demonstrate that the position of the TMOKE resonance is remarkably responsive to variations in the background refractive index, yielding in an impressive sensitivity of 188.7° per refractive index unit, coupled with a narrow linewidth owing to the inherent low loss of dielectric materials. This investigation lays the groundwork for novel advancements in linear optics, integrated optical circuits, and low-loss biosensing applications.

Abstract:Magneto-optic Kerr technique has been a powerful tool to deeply investigate the surface magnetics due to its some advantages such as high accuracy,fast response and low cost,et al.A new measurement system of longitudinal surface magneto-optic Kerr effect in large magnetic field is introduced.By increasing the incidence angle of laser beam with a convex lens,improving the intensity of Kerr signal,as well as decreasing the spacing between magnetic poles,we are able to measure the samples with large coercivity in plane.Meanwhile,the incident laser beam is divided into 2 beams in order to solve the instability problem of laser.With the high accuracy,this system can be used in the measurement of thin and ultra-thin magnetic films.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a new type of optical functional material, which has interesting optical characteristics under an external magnetic field. In this letter, the magneto-optical characteristic of the magnetic fluid was adopted to form a novel fiber-optic magnetic field sensor. The sensor probe was composed of an extrinsic fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer and magnetic fluid. The refractive index of the magnetic fluid would be changed with the increase of magnetic field. Preliminary experiment was carried out to verify the feasibility of the sensor. The magnetic field measurement sensitivity was 0.0431 nm/Gs in the experiment. The measurement resolution was better than 0.5 Gs at the measurement range from 0 to 400 Gs. The sensor has the advantages of simple structure, compact size, and easy fabrication.

Abstract:We present a multipoint fiber magnetic field sensing system based on magnetic fluid (MF) and frequency-shifted interferometry fiber loop ringdown (FSI-FLRD). This system contains a number of cascaded sensing channels, and shares a common continuous-wave light source and slow electronics instead of a pulsed light source and high-speed electron devices as required in traditional multichannel FLRD techniques. Each sensing channel is formed by incorporating an MF-coated etched fiber as the sensing head inside a fiber ringdown loop. Each sensing head is mounted on a temperature control device. We experimentally fabricated a dual-channel FSI-FLRD magnetic field sensing system. First the system’s temperature response was investigated, which indicates the MF-based sensing heads had temperature cross sensitivity. Then after keeping the temperature at 20 °C for improving testing accuracy and applying different magnetic fields, the two sensing channels were separately shown to have sensitivities of $- 9.38\times 10 ^{-5}$ and $- 2.28\times 10 ^{-5}$ /(km$\cdot $ Oe) with a linear response in the range of 221–721 Oe. The obtained sensing channel stabilities were respectively 0.02% and 0.04%, which enhance more than one order of magnitude compared with those of most conventional FLRD techniques.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity DC magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) apparatus is described in this Letter. Via detailed analysis on several dominating noise sources, we have proposed solutions that significantly lower the MOKE noise, and a sensitivity of 1.5×10-7 rad/Hz is achieved with long-term stability. The sensitivity of the apparatus is tested by measuring a wedge-shaped Ni thin film on SiO2 with Ni thickness varying from 0 to 3 nm. A noise floor of 1.5×10-8 rad is demonstrated. The possibility of further improving sensitivity to 10-9 rad via applying AC modulation is also discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a fiber optic magnetic field sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance effect. By filling the elliptical magnetic fluid medium layer in the optical fiber cladding, the structure increases the effective contact area between the magnetic medium and the fiber core, thereby improving the sensing performance, at the same time, the structural stability of the sensor is considered. Coating the metal silver film on the inner surface of the elliptical cavity can prevent the metal layer from being oxidized. In addition, compared with other metal materials, silver film can significantly improve the resolution of the output spectrum. The performance of the sensor was studied using the finite element method. The results show that the sensor can measure the commonly used low magnetic field in the range of 50–115 Oe, it also has the advantages of strong sensitivity about S= 2.02 nm/Oe, high resolution R= 4.9 × 10−3 Oe and large Figure of Merit FOM= 0.024/Oe. Based on the characteristics of miniaturization, integration and high sensitivity, the sensor can be considered for the applications in military, medical, industrial production and other fields.

Abstract:A novel magnetic field measurement method based on the magneto-volume effect is proposed. The magnetic field sensing structure fabricated by the proposed measurement method is made by the magnetic fluid (MF) partially filled into the hollow core fiber (HCF). The presence of air provides conditions for the change of MF volume with the magnetic field in the proposed sensing structure. Therefore, the magneto-volume effect is introduced into the magnetic field sensing mechanism. From 109.6 to 125.8 Gs, the peak wavelength shift is −65480 pm and the sensitivity is −4219.15 pm/Gs, which is 28.16 times higher than that of the fabricated contrast sensing structure. The sensitivity of the magnetic field sensing structure is greatly improved by introducing the magneto-volume effect compared with the contrast sensing structure. The response time and recovery time of the sensing structure are equally 0.2 s. Therefore, the sensing structure has high sensitivity, good linearity, and short response time, which has potential application prospects in magnetic field sensing.

Resonant magneto–optical Kerr effect induced by hybrid plasma modes in ferromagnetic nanovoids

Abstract:With nanovoids buried in Co films, resonant structures were observed in spectra of polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), where both a narrow bandwidth and high intensity were acquired. Through changing the thickness of Co films and the lattice of voids, different optical modes were introduced. For a very shallow array of voids, the resonant MOKE was induced by Ag plasma edge resonance, for deeper ones, hybrid plasma modes, such as void plasmons in the voids, surface lattice plasmons between the voids, and the co-action of them, etc. resulted in resonant MOKE. We found that resonant MOKE resulted from the void plasmons resonance which possesses the narrowest bandwidth for the lowest absorption of voids. The simulated electromagnetic field (EF) distribution consolidated different effects of these three optical modes on resonant MOKE modulation. Such resonant polar MOKE possesses high sensitivity, which might pave the way to on-chip MO devices.
