Abstract:Wireless communications are rapidly becoming the means of data and information transfer for a broad range of applications. As wireless communication applications continue to expand, the information transfer rates are evolving toward the Gigabit per second data rate and, for some applications, there is even a need for terabit per second data rate transfer in the wireless network. In addition, wireless terminals often require instantaneous switching and communications between network members. For most applications directional antennas are needed to support the high data throughput requirements, and phased array antennas are the only high gain, directional antennas that can be rapidly switched to provide instantaneous communications among network members scattered geographically. Wireless terminal equipment is currently designed to operate in the 1 to 60 GHz frequency range and, traditionally, these equipment are designed with RF hardware. More recently, optics technology has been demonstrated to play an important role in RF systems as the True-Time-Delay in the phased array antenna, and, for some systems operating at high data rates, optical interconnects at the baseband level require E-O and O-E conversions. This paper discusses the considerations in using optics technology in the design of the wireless terminal network including optical signal processing, optical backplanes, optical networking, optical interconnects, and optical components. This paper also describes the architecture of an RF wireless communications network using a range of optical technologies.

Abstract:As the transistor’s feature scales down and the integration density of the monolithic circuit increases continuously,the traditional metal interconnects face significant performance limitation to meet the stringent demands of high-speed,low-power and low-latency data transmission for on-and off-chip communications.Optical technology is poised to resolve these problems.Due to the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor（CMOS） compatible process,silicon photonics is the leading candidate technology.Silicon photonic devices and networks have been improved dramatically in recent years,with a notable increase in bandwidth from the megahertz to the multi-gigahertz regime in just over half a decade.This paper reviews the recent developments in silicon photonics for optical interconnects and summarizes the work of our laboratory in this research field.
An architecture of parallel photonic/electronic packet switching networks

Abstract:An architecture for a future multi-channel photonic packet network is proposed, which uses two wavelengths per channel. One channel wavelength (the fast wavelength) is used to carry a high speed all optical packet (the photonic packet), and the other one (the slow wavelength) to carry a low speed packet and header (the electronic packet, photonic packet header) . The electronic packet is electronically interrogated at each node, the photonic packet is routed directly through (or optically Adding/Dropping) the node. A possible future framework of dual wavelength parallel photonic/electronic packet(or ATM cell based) switching is proposed, which includes a proposed format for the photonic/electronic packet, together with the functional reference model and layered architecture of the associated photonic networks. At the same time, the dual wavelength experiments are demonstrated in a system with one wavelength to carry the high speed payload and the other wavelength to carry the low speed header and electronic packet bits in the same time slot.

Taking the dominant position of IP services and development of optical transmission technology into consideration,in order to adapt the requirements for future development, there is not only need to improve link capacity and network utilization,but also need to promote the intelligence of optical transmission network to meet the needs of IP service for transmission and switching system.Therefore,there is need to develop the next generation optical transmission network,which is based on the convergence of IP layer and optical layer.This paper simply explained the development and key technologies of next generation optical transmission network.

Abstract:The combination of broadband optical access and core networks is considered to be one of the most promising solutions for end-to-end transportation of high bit-rate data, video, and voice signals across optical networks of the future. Optical label switching technology (OLS) is an important aspect of optical packet switching and it involves the extraction and processing of the labels so that the packets can be routed to their destinations. OLS enables the routing and forwarding of the ultra-high bit rate payloads from source to destination entirely in the optical domain, thus alleviating the need for expensive optical-to-electrical conversions for processing. We have developed key enabling technologies for merged core and access networks including optical label generation, label swapping, optical buffering, clock recovery and wavelength conversion. We have experimentally demonstrated that these enabling techniques that can provide efficient broadband services in the future access and core networks.

Abstract:The continuous growth of IP traffic in combination with emerging applications with various bandwidth demands is driving the introduction of elastic optical network (EON) with flex grid. EON can increase spectrum utilization by better matching data rate with the allocated bandwidth and improve the spectral efficiency by multi-carrier and high-order modulation solutions. In this article the architecture and key technologies for physical layers of EON will be introduced. We propose optical-comb based bandwidth-variable optical transponder and optical switching node supporting software definition. Key technologies for physical layer of elastic optical networks are experimentally demonstrated, including bandwidth-variable add/drop, subband switching, spectrum conversion, defragmentation and multicasting for optical superchannel.

Abstract:With the exponentially increasing Internet traffic and emergence of more versatile and heterogeneous applications, the design of datacenter networks (DCNs) is subject to unprecedented requirements for larger capacity and more flexible switching granularities. Envisioning Optical-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) as a promising candidate for such a scenario, we motivate the use of O-OFDM as the underlying switching technology in order to provide sufficient switching capacity and elastic bandwidth allocation. For this purpose, this article reviews the recent progresses of DCN deployment and assesses the scenario where the O-OFDM transmission and switching technology is employed in the underlying transport plane. We discuss the key issues of the datacenter-oriented O-OFDM optical networks, and in particular, elaborate on a number of open issues and solutions including system interconnection architecture, routing and resource assignment, survivability, and energy-efficiency.

Abstract:Optical data center networks (DCNs) are becoming increasingly attractive due to their technological strengths compared to traditional electrical networks. However, prior optical DCNs are either hard to scale, vulnerable to single point of failure, or provide limited network bisection bandwidth for many practical DCN workloads.To this end, we present WaveCube, a scalable, fault-tolerant, high-performance optical DCN architecture. To scale, WaveCube removes MEMS1, a potential bottleneck, from its design. WaveCube is fault-tolerant since it does not have single point of failure and there are multiple node-disjoint parallel paths between any pair of Top-of-Rack (ToR) switches. WaveCube delivers high performance by exploiting multi-pathing and dynamic link bandwidth along the path. Our extensive evaluation results show that WaveCube outperforms previous optical DCNs by up to 400% and delivers network bisection bandwidth that is 70%-85% of an ideal non-blocking network under both realistic and synthetic traffic patterns. WaveCube's performance degrades gracefully under failures-it drops 20% even with 20% links cut. WaveCube also holds promise in practice-its wiring complexity is orders of magnitude lower than Fattree, BCube and c-Through at large scale, and its power consumption is 35% of them.

Abstract:In topology,an optical network is composed of multiple edges(optical transmission) and nodes(optical switch).The service features and the time structure of optical switch stream supporting the service are discussed based on the connection and connectionless patterns.Examples include the length of optical packet and burst,and the length of optical circuit with high dynamic degree,which is defined in the internet engineering task force(IETF) standard.The measured results imply the achievable shortest length of optical circuits.The space architecture of optical switch is discussed.Examples include three architectures in terms of large port number and capacity,i.e.,the optical switching structures based on micro-electro-mechanical system(MEMS),wavelength-selective switch(WSS),and arrayed waveguide grating(AWG).The architectural scalability of three ones discussed above is addressed.Some other challenging issues are also discussed,including optical buffer and power consumption.Hopefully,the paper is helpful for understanding the essence of optical switching and the relationship with the counterpart electronic switching.

Abstract:In accommodating the continued explosive growth in Internet traffic, optical core networks have been evolving accordingly thanks to numerous technological and architectural innovations. From an architectural perspective, the adoption of optical-bypass networking in the last two decades has resulted in substantial cost savings, owning to the elimination of massive optical-electrical optical interfaces. In optical-bypass framework, the basic functions of optical nodes include adding (dropping) and cross-connecting transitional lightpaths. Moreover, in the process of cross-connecting transiting lightpaths through an intermediate node, these lightpaths must be separated from each other in either time, frequency or spatial domain, to avoid unwanted interference which deems to deteriorate the signal qualities. In light of recently enormous advances in photonic signal processing / computing technologies enabling the precisely controlled interference of optical channels for various computing functions, we propose a new architectural paradigm for future optical networks, namely, optical-computing-enabled networks. Our proposal is defined by the added capability of optical nodes permitting the superposition of transitional lightpaths for computing purposes to achieve greater capacity efficiency. Specifically, we present two illustrative examples highlighting the potential benefits of bringing about in-network optical computing functions which are relied on optical aggregation and optical XOR gate. The new optical computing capabilities armed at optical nodes therefore call for a radical change in formulating networking problems and designing accompanying algorithms, which are collectively referred to as optical network design and planning 2.0 so that the capital and operational efficiency could be fully unlocked.

Abstract:The coexistence of different types of equipment in an optical network makes the network complex and heterogeneous.If interconnection has not been realized,bottlenecks can occur that constrain the further development of the network.This article highlights control and internetworking problems in heterogeneous high-capacity optical networks.New technologies are introduced,including a novel centralized-distributed-mixed management and control architecture for large-scale heterogeneous optical networks,a K random-paths routing technology,an outer-ring based multi-domain topology,and an immediate re-routing signaling technology.Results of experiments carried out on our recently established heterogeneous network test-bed are also given.

Abstract:Relying on the flexible-access interconnects to the scalable storage and compute resources, data centers deliver critical communications connectivity among numerous servers to support the housed applications and services. To provide the high-speeds and long-distance communications, the data centers have turned to fiber interconnections. With the stringently increased traffic volume, the data centers are then expected to further deploy the optical switches into the systems infrastructure to implement the full optical switching. This paper first summarizes the topologies and traffic characteristics in data centers and analyzes the reasons and importance of moving to optical switching. Recent techniques related to the optical switching, and main challenges limiting the practical deployments of optical switches in data centers are also summarized and reported.
