Abstract:An efficient copper(II)/tert-butyl hydroperoxide catalyst system [(Bpy)Cu(II)/TBHP] for the aminoxylation of different types of hydrocarbons under mild and ambient air conditions has been developed to furnish N-alkoxyamine derivatives in good to high yields. Ketones, esters, nitriles, toluene, ethylbenzene, heterocycles, cyclohexene, and cyclohexanes are well compatible in this system and the catalyst loading could be lowered to 0.5 mol%.

Abstract:A tandem oxidative α-hydroxylation/β-acetalization reaction of β-ketoamides was developed in the presence of PIDA and NaOH. This reaction proceeded at 25 °C in the absence of a metal catalyst to provide 2-hydroxy-3,3-dimethoxy-N-substituted butanamides in good to excellent yields from readily available starting materials. The application of this chemistry to the construction of α-hydroxy-β-ketoamides and quinolinones was also described.

Abstract:A simple ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) catalyzed functionalization of ketones through double C-C bond cleavage strategy has been disclosed. This reaction provides a mild, practical method toward carbamoyl azides, which are versatile intermediates and building blocks in organic synthesis. Based on relevant mechanistic studies, a unique and plausible C-C bond and N-O bond cleavage process is proposed, where the oxyamination intermediate plays an important role in this reaction.

Abstract:An electrochemical asymmetric coupling of secondary acyclic amines with ketones via a Shono-type oxidation has been described, affording the corresponding amino acid derivatives with good to excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity. The addition of an N-oxyl radical as a redox mediator could selectively oxidize the substrate rather than the product, although their oxidation potential difference is subtle (about 13 mV). This electrochemical transformation proceeds in the absence of stoichiometric additives, including metals, oxidants, and electrolytes, which gives it good functional group compatibility. Abstract:An approach to the vicinal oxyazidation of alkenes has been achieved under mild and transition metal-free conditions. This method utilizes NaN3 as the azidation agent and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxoammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEMPO+BF4-) as the single-electron oxidant as well as the oxygen source. By using this protocol, various β-aminooxy azides were synthesized and several complex bioactive molecules were functionalized.

Abstract:An entirely metal-free catalyst system consisting of an easily prepared recyclable new TEMPO derived sulfonic salt catalyst, and mineral acids (NaNO2 and HCl) has been developed for selective aerobic oxidation of structurally diverse benzylic sp(3) C-H bonds of ethers and alkylarenes. The mild reaction conditions allow for the generation of synthetically and biologically valued isochromanones and xanthones from readily accessible alkyl aromatic precursors in good yields.

Abstract:A light‐driven radical oxy‐functionalization of non‐acidic aliphatic and benzylic C(sp3)–H bonds was achieved with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO) in a single‐step by employing an aryl ketone as a sole catalyst. The transformation was initiated by homolysis of a C(sp3)–H bond in starting substance by the photo‐excited aryl ketone. The derived carbon radical was then promptly trapped by TEMPO leading to the formation of the TEMPO‐adduct. The derived TEMPO‐adduct is synthetically versatile as an alcohol equivalent since it can be readily converted to the corresponding ketone by oxidation and to the corresponding alcohol by reduction. The key to realizing the present catalytic reaction relies on the distinctive triple role of TEMPO, which acts as the precursor of the oxygen functionality, the oxidant to regenerate the aryl ketone, and the protective group for the derived TEMPO‐adduct from over‐oxidation.

Abstract:A feasible and umpolung strategy for the synthesis of structurally diverse β‐amino ketones has been achieved through TEMPO mediated C‐N coupling of cyclopropanols with nitrogen nucleophiles. Mechanism studies indicated that in situ generated enones derived from cyclopropanols are the key intermediates and TEMPO play multiple roles, including radical initiator, trapping reagent, a porter of β‐hydrogen and an in situ base. This protocol features broad substrate scope, good scalability and good to excellent yields and provides an alternative and complementary approach to the synthesis of structurally important β‐amino ketone scaffolds under metal and additive‐free conditions.

Abstract:A metal-free convergent paired electrolysis strategy to synthesize benzylic amines through direct arylation of tertiary amines and benzonitrile derivatives at room temperature has been developed. This TEMPO-mediated electrocatalytic reaction makes full use of both anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction without metals or stoichiometric oxidants, thus showing great potential and advantages for practical synthesis. This convergent paired electrolysis method provides a straightforward and powerful means to activate C-H bonds and realize cross-coupling with cathodically generated species.

Abstract:Asymmetric synthesis of 3-hydroxyl-2-alkanones is achieved via one-pot, tandem organocatalytic aminoxylation of aldehydes and chemoselective CH2N2-induced homologation. Accelerating effect of water is observed in α-aminoxylation. MgCl2, a Lewis acid additive, improves the chemoselectivity of the diazomethane homologation to 6:1 in favor of ketone.

Abstract:An efficient aerobic oxidation of isochromans and their derivatives with Fe(NO3)3•9H2O and 4-OH-TEMPO as catalysts at room temperature has been developed. The method provides a convenient approach to synthesize the biologically active isochromanone-containing compounds. Optically active product could be prepared from optically active isochroman without racemization. This catalytic protocol can also be extended to oxidation of xanthene and phthalan in satisfactory yields.

Abstract:An efficient and highly selective method for the oxidative conversion of primary amines to the corresponding nitriles using trichloroisocyanuric acid in the presence of catalytic TEMPO under mild reaction conditions is described. Other functional groups such as C,C-double bonds, benzyloxy etc. were found to be unaffected under the reaction conditions. This procedure provides a new entry to the synthesis of various aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic nitriles in excellent yield.
