Abstract:A novel artificial receptor 1 containing the indolocarbazole-NH moieties as the recognition sites exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity toward F− over other typical anionic species in DMSO solution. Upon addition of F− into the solution, receptor 1 showed a remarkable ratiometric shift of the fluorescence maximum from 535 to 590nm, and also a prominent color change from light yellow to orange, which was observable by the naked eye. The recognition properties of receptor 1 were investigated by 1H NMR, UV–vis, and fluorescence titration experiments, with the results suggesting a two-step strategy of binding with F−. In addition, the theoretical calculations were carried out to reveal the role of intramolecular charge transfer in the ratiometric fluorescence recognition process.

Abstract:A simple and highly sensitive fluorescent receptor 1‐(p‐tolyl)‐4,9‐dihydro‐3H‐pyrido[3,4‐b]indole (receptor 1), which detect fluoride and cyanide ions with very low LOD's, respectively. The UV–vis, fluorescence spectroscopy along with naked eye visualization confirms the selective detection. In this work, a simple and highly sensitive fluorescent receptor 1‐(p‐tolyl)‐4,9‐dihydro‐3H‐pyrido[3,4‐b]indole (receptor 1), has been synthesized for the detection of fluoride and cyanide ions. The receptor 1 was very selective towards fluoride and cyanide anions over other anions such as Cl−, Br−, I−, HSO4−, NO3−, HPO42−, and OAc−. Synthesized receptor 1 shows low detection limits 3.29 × 10−8 M for fluoride ion, which was determined by UV–vis absorption. While LOD for cyanide was observed to be 61.5 nM. Importantly, while, receptor 1 produced binding constant for fluoride and cyanide in DMSO‐H2O (1:9, v/v) was found to be 5 × 10−4M−1 and 3.28 × 10−5 M−1, respectively. The variation in the optical and fluorescence spectroscopy confirms the formation of N─H⋯F− and N─H⋯CN− hydrogen bond of the pyrrolic proton The sensing mechanism displayed by receptor 1 for fluoride and cyanide ions was confirmed by 1H‐NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopic along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Solution with the fluoride and cyanide ions in DMSO‐H2O (1:9, v/v) shows a color change from light yellow to blue under UV light and yellow to colorless in visible light.

Abstract:A new series of indolocarbazole-quinoxalines (ICQ, receptors 6 and 7) are prepared and characterized for effective fluoride and acetate anion sensing. The new indole-based system has a highly. at rigid structure with a large p system, and exhibits high binding affinity and sensitivity for acetate and fluoride anions. Receptors 6 and 7 give abundant and unique spectral features in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Both fluoride and acetate anions cause a bathochromic shift of the absorption peaks of receptor 7 in DMSO, whereas only fluoride anion results in a remarkable shift of the absorption peak of receptor 6 in DMSO. Receptors 6 and 7 can also operate as efficient colorimetric sensors for naked-eye detection of fluoride and acetate anions, and their combined use also offers a simple way for distinguishing these two anions by the naked-eye. The analysis of a Job's plot for the binding of receptor 7 and F-, single crystal structures of 7 center dot TBACl and 7 center dot TBACH(3)COO confirm 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry. Notably, the ICQ system offers novel and excellent receptors for acetate anion both in solution and in crystalline solid through the formation of two hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:Two novel 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivatives, used as colorimetric and fluorescent sensors for fluoride ion were designed, synthesized and characterized. These sensors contained single hydrogen-bond functional groups, which acted as interacting sites for fluoride ion. Both sensors displayed a red color in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. Binding studies revealed that they showed noticeable colorimetric and fluorescent responses only to F− among the eight anions tested (F−, Cl−, Br−, I−, AcO−, H2PO4−, HSO4− and NO3−). 1H NMR titration proved that the interaction between compounds and fluoride ion: hydrogen bond at low fluoride ion concentration, deprotonation at high fluoride ion concentration. Moreover, those compounds showed high sensitivity and selectivity for fluoride ion by inhibiting the excited state intramolecular proton transfer processes, and the detective processes could be followed by direct visual observation.

Abstract:A series of 8-hydroxyquinoline azo derivatives with diverse conjugated structures were synthesized and studied to chromogenically detect anions. All the dyes allowed selective detection for fluoride anion in CH3CN via instant deprotonation of the compounds, which was affirmed by UV-Vis absorption and H-1 NMR spectra. The chromogenically responding ability increases as the substituent changes from phenyl to naphthyl or anthryl. This result is likely to be related to the enhancement of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) induced by extension of conjugated structure.

Abstract:Three imidazolium derivatives 3-5 were designed and synthesized, in which naphthaimidazolium group acted as both fluorophore and anion receptor. Compound 3 exhibited high selectivity for F- in CH3CN solution over all the other anions and acted as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for F- with an enhanced blue-shift in emission. However, the fluorescence of compound 4 and 5 displayed a quenched blue-shift in emission with fluoride ion and could be quenched by some other tested anions, where the degree of quenching depended on the characteristic of the anions. More importantly, only compound 3 could detect F- in DMSO-water (95 : 5, v/v) aqueous solution ratiometrically. Based on the analysis of the results of H-1-NMR and F-19-NMR, it was deduced that compound 3 bound with F- mainly by the force of hydrogen bonding, while compound 4 and 5 coordinated with F- through electrostatic interaction.

Abstract:An indole-related molecules have been considered as the potential fluorescent probes for biological and electrochemical sensing. However, most of the indole probes have been usually used in a single detection mode. Indolium probes that enable accurate detection in complex environments are rarely reported. Here, four novel indole derivatives including the phenyl group substituted with different functional moieties were designed on the basis of the donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) concept. These derivatives exhibit positive solvatochromism owing to their varied molecular conformations upon contacting to various solvents and the different HOMO-LUMO gaps caused by the difference in electronic push-pull capability of the substituents. Their solid-state fluorescence emissions and multiple chromisms are observed due to the inherent twisted geometries and aggregation modes. In addition, these derivatives show dramatic color and fluorescence responses due to the protonation of the nitrogen and oxygen containing groups, and thus novel colorimetric pH sensors, fluorescent papers and logic gates have been designed.

Abstract:Two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons bearing trimethylsilylethynyl groups were designed and synthesized as new colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probes for fluoride anion. Both probes exhibit high specific selectivity and sensitivity for F− compared to other anions. When F− is added to the solution of the probe, the trimethylsilyl substituents can be removed immediately, and the color of the solution changes from yellow to colorless under ambient light. Moreover, test papers based on the probes are prepared, which could be applied to detect F− in organic phase.

Abstract:A derivative of squaramide (cyclobuta[b]quinoxaline-1, 2(3H, 8H)-dione) has been synthesized for the ratiometric and colorimetric sensing of F− in aqueous solution in competitive fashion. With F−, probe 1 showed a highly selective naked-eye detectable color change along with a characteristic UV–Vis absorbance over other tested ions, which probably originates from the deprotonation occurred between 1 and F−, as proved by the 1H NMR titration experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Two novel benzothiadiazole derivatives were prepared. Clear color changes from orange-red to blue (DPCN) and pink to green (DPTPE) were observed after the addition of fluoride ions (F-). DPCN and DPTPE displayed ratiometric fluorescence changes in the presence of F-. H-1-NMR titration and DFT calculations confirmed deprotonation in the presence of F-. Compared with DPTPE, the hydrogen proton of the imine group in DPCN had higher activity due to the influence of the strong electron-withdrawing cyano group, such that it was more easily deprotonated and the detection limit for F- was much lower. This work provided guidance for the further design and preparation benzothiadiazole based colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence sensor for F-.

Abstract:In the last two decades, the research of the anion recognition has bloomed splendidly. The strong influence of the anion in the field of biological system, industry and every day life made the qualitative and quantitative research in anion recognition more and more important. After realizing the important role played by anions in biology and environment, various anions recognition hosts were synthesized. Herein, we report the synthesis of a quinoxaline based compound, namely 2, 3-bis (2-pyrrole amide) methylquinoxaline (2) through seven steps reaction. The crystal structure of compound 2 was studied. The fluoride recognition propriety of compound 2 was studied by monitoring the perturbation of the UV-Vis and the fluorescent spectra of the host upon the addition of anion. The result show that compound 2 can recognize fluoride in DMSO efficiently, and the main recognition sites are pyrrole NHs and amide NHs.

Abstract:New imidazolium/benzimidazolium-containing receptors (R)-1–(R)-6 were developed as multifunctional receptors for both chromogenic and chiral anion recognition through multichannel. The ?uorescence spectra of (R)-1 showed a distinct and intense peak at 454, 474 nm with AcO− and F−, respectively, indicating that (R)-1 can be applied to the detection of fluoride and acetate ions by naked eye. Receptor (R)-5, containing a lipophilic dodecyl appendage at imidazolium nitrogen, exhibited larger fluorescent responses than (R)-1. The ratio of fluorescence enhancement for (R)-5 with AcO− (I460/I369=16) and F− (I485/I369=11) was 32-fold and 18-fold over (R)-1 with AcO− (I454/I369=0.5) and F− (I474/I369=0.6), respectively. Less electron-deficient benzimidazolium receptor (R)-2 only gave fluorescence enhance at 555 nm for F−. Only chelation enhanced quenching (CHEQ) effect was obtained in the case of mono-imidazolium receptor (R)-4. Furthermore, (R)-1 and (R)-5 displayed a remarkable binding ability for the t-Boc alanine anion with interesting enantioselectivity [KL/KD=4.5 for (R)-1 and 4.1 for (R)-5)], whereas only negligible enantioselectivity ability (KL/KD=1.1) was obtained by using C1 symmetric receptor (R)-4.

Abstract:A new diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative (DPP-4) with two triphenylamine groups was developed as red emission fluorescent sensor for fluoride ion. The fluorescent changes of DPP-4 interact with fluoride ion exhibiting obvious solvent-dependent properties. In acetone, ratiometric channel was activated upon addition of n-Bu4NF, and more than 50nm red shift from 590nm to 641nm was obtained and accompanied with emission color from orange to purple red. In acetonitrile, addition of fluoride caused 50-fold enhancement at 631nm in emission spectra which be defined as a “turn on” mode. Interestingly, using fluoride and HSO4− anions as two chemical inputs and absorption or fluorescence as output, compound DPP-4 is demonstrated to be a parallel double-INH logic gate in acetonitrile solutions.
