Abstract:With the expansion and deepening of scientific research, dual-functional or multifunctional materials are urgently needed to replace those for single application. Herein, a fluorescence sensing system based on an In(III)-organic complex with in situ Lewis acid sites has been constructed, exhibiting high sensitivity for the detection of Fe(III) ions with a low detection limit of 3.95 μM and a short response time of within 10 s. It is noteworthy that the quenched fluorescence of the Fe(III)-incorporated sample could be reopened linearly with an increase of alkalinity, followed by the reactivation of its functionality to identify Fe(III) ions, forming an alternate detection cycle for Fe(III) and pH with off-on-off fluorescent switch characteristics. Considering its unique molecular recognition capability, an advanced three-input (Fe(III), EDTA, and OH-) and two-output (B440 and G489) Boolean logic operation comprising BUFF, NOT, OR, and AND logic gates was integrated, possessing potential applications in intelligent multianalyte sensing systems.

Abstract:A simple and efficient chemosensor 1 was synthesized by reacting thiosernicarbazide with 1-naphthaldehyde. It was found that the sensor is highly selective toward fluoride anions in both UV-vis and fluorescence channels in DMSO solution. Especially, the spectral responses of the sensor along with a visible color change can be switched back and forth by successively adding F- and HSO4- anions into the DMSO solution, which may be represented by a complementary "IMPLICATION/INHIBIT" logic gate at molecular level employing both the ions as the chemical inputs. Based on such a reversible and reproducible sensing system, we designed a molecular-scale sequential memory unit displaying "Writing-Reading-Erasing-Reading" and "Multi-write" functions in the form of binary logic. Abstract:An indole-related molecules have been considered as the potential fluorescent probes for biological and electrochemical sensing. However, most of the indole probes have been usually used in a single detection mode. Indolium probes that enable accurate detection in complex environments are rarely reported. Here, four novel indole derivatives including the phenyl group substituted with different functional moieties were designed on the basis of the donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) concept. These derivatives exhibit positive solvatochromism owing to their varied molecular conformations upon contacting to various solvents and the different HOMO-LUMO gaps caused by the difference in electronic push-pull capability of the substituents. Their solid-state fluorescence emissions and multiple chromisms are observed due to the inherent twisted geometries and aggregation modes. In addition, these derivatives show dramatic color and fluorescence responses due to the protonation of the nitrogen and oxygen containing groups, and thus novel colorimetric pH sensors, fluorescent papers and logic gates have been designed.

Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:Photo-therapeutic applications require efficient photo-switchable anion receptor materials with high photoisomerization ratio, thermal stabilities, and anion binding affinities. Based on di-ortho-fluoro di-ortho-chloro azobenzene (dfdc-AB), a recently proposed photoswitch whose E -* Z isomerization can be triggered using irradiations in the bio-optical window, we designed a series of photoswitchable anion receptors with firstprinciples calculations. We demonstrated that, by modifying the 3- and 5-site of the azobenzene backbone of dfdc-AB using methoxyamide groups, the resulted dfdc-AB-OCH3 has nearly bistability, high E -* Z conversion in the visible region, and apparent difference in binding affinities for CH3CO2 at different isomers, indicating a promising photoswitchable anion receptor in photopharmacology.

Abstract:Recently, fluorescent labeling techniques have been greatly developed with the aid of highly optimized small-molecule fluorescent dyes, fluorescent proteins and advanced tagging techniques. Many reasonable strategies have been used to design fluorescent diarylethene, mainly focusing on the introduction of luminophores by conjugated junction and the modification of aryl cores in the diarylethene. Compared to thiophene, furan has superior properties such as solubility, biodegradable ability and rigidity fluorescence. Therefore, difurylethene is a better candidate for fluorescent labeling techniques. Herein, a new fluorescent photoswitch based on dicyano-vinyl modified difurylethenes was designed and prepared. This compound demonstrates typical reversible photochromism in solution and outstanding performance for the fluorescent detection of cyanide ions with excellent selectivity, sensitivity and high contrast. Furthermore, the mechanism of sensing toward cyanide ions was explained by H-1 NMR titrations experiments. Owing to the strong fluorescence from a superior derivation with furan instead of thiophene, it is successfully applied as the fluorescent dyes and probe for detecting cyanide ions in vivo application.
Photoswitchable Chemical Sensing Based on the Colorimetric Ph Response of Ring-Opened Naphthopyrans

Abstract:Photoswitchable chemical sensor is a special variety of sensors that could be turned ON and OFF upon light modulation. Previous photoswitchable ion-selective sensors have been demonstrated on spiropyrans toward Cl-, Na+, K+, and Ca2+. Herein, we demonstrate the first photoswitchable pH sensor based on naphthopyrans, a known family of photoswitchable compounds with better photostability than spiropyran. The naphthopyrans undergo ring-opening reactions under 365 nm UV irradiation. The ring-opened forms are demonstrated here to be pH sensitive due to the presence of piperidine and morpholine moieties. Protonation of the ring-opened forms shifted the absorption peaks from ca. 530 nm (deprotonated) to ca. 624 nm (protonated) leading to a vivid color change. These compounds were evaluated in organic solvents, plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-DOS) films, and polyurethane hydrogels. In the hydrogels, quantitative pH sensing was achieved in the dynamic range from pH 3 to 7, and similarly, the electrodes containing the naphthopyran also exhibited Nernstian response in the acidic range. UV light stimulation on the electrode membrane also revealed that there was a basicity change between the ring-opened and ring-closed naphthopyran forms. However, judging from the small change of electrode potential (ca. 17 mV), the difference was much smaller compared with previous reported spiropyrans (ca. 350 mV). Based on these results, we believed the proposed compounds and strategy could form the basis of a new variety of photoswitchable and photoactivatable chemical sensors.

Abstract:In order to exploit novel fluorescent sensors with photoswitching properties, six fluorescent molecules were synthesized via coupling 1 H -indole-7-carbohydrazide and corresponding substituted formaldehyde through an acylhydrazone bond. All title compounds were characterized via 1 H, 13 C NMR, and elemental analysis, the single crystal structure of compound IC-PD was obtained via X-ray diffraction. The compounds IC-EL and IC-4PZ exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics and also with regular responses to temperature and alkalinity in the solvent system dominated via deionized water. Probes IC-PL, IC-4PZ , and IC-PD could be used as fluorescence probes to detect copper (II) with the LODs of 0.37, 0.27, and 0.26 μM in concentration of 0-50 μM, especially extraordinary bits of complex IC-PD -Cu 2+ could also exhibited bright yellow in tetrahydrofuran (THF), which ensured the convenience of detection for Cu 2+ ion. The exploration on the combination mechanism of representative compound IC-PD and Cu 2+ ion via FT-IR and 1 H NMR, which confirmed that the proton of hydrazide was protonated via Cu 2+ ion, resulting in the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process was interfered. When IC-PD was irradiation to the 302 nm photostationary state (PSS), the fluorescence emission intensity of IC-PD in THF was slightly enhanced, accompanied with the increased sensitivity of detection for Cu 2+ . Although the improvement was not significant, it was also provided a design foundation for the development of stimuli responsive fluorescent materials with photoswitching properties.

Abstract:In order to exploit the compounds with excellent photoswitching properties, a series of 3-pyridylazoindole derivatives were designed and synthesized. The molecular structures were characterized via 1 H and 13 C NMR, the structure of typical compound A6 was also confirmed via single crystal X-ray diffraction. This series of 3-pyridylazoindole derivatives had outstanding characteristics compared with traditional azo photoswitches, such as the red-shifted of maximum absorption wavelength, UV/vis light isomerization in both directions (PSS cis : 45–78%; PSS trans : 47–98%) can be achieved easily and broad range of trans -isomer thermal half-lives from minutes to days (0.44–38.4 h). The relationship between structure and properties verified that the photoswiching behavior of azo photoswitches was closely related to the conjugation groups and electronic effects modifying groups. Besides, the frontier molecular orbital and differences of spatial structure calculated by density functional theory (DFT) further explained the performance characteristics of photoswitches. What more, the compound A7 exhibited excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and could also be used as selective "on–off" fluorescence sensor for Cu 2+ , which expanded the photochemical properties of 3-pyridylazoindole derivatives.

Abstract:A novel photochromic diarylethene fluorescence sensor 1o bearing a triazole-linked rhodamine B unit was designed and synthesized. Results showed that 1o had multi-responsive photoswitchable characteristics under the stimulation of light, proton, and specific metal ions. It also showed highly selectivity and sensitivity to recognize Hg2+ over other interfering heavy and transition metal ions through the spirolactam ring-opening reaction, which could be detected with "naked-eyes". Upon the treatment with Hg2+, the fluorescence intensity of 1o at 606 nm was enhanced by 88-fold with notable fluorescence color changing from dark to pink. And its detection limit to Hg2+ was as low as 0.13 μM. Significant fluorescence quenching was observed upon the irradiation with 297 nm light due to FRET between rhodamine B moiety and diarylethene unit. Moreover, an INHIBIT logic gate was established with UV light and proton as the dual data inputs, and the fluorescence intensity at 605 nm as the data output.

Abstract:Based on a perylene diimide derivatives(PDIs) platform, AM-PDIs was rationally designed and synthesized as a new calorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensor for naked-eye detection of fluoride ion with high selectivity over other halide ions. Addition of fluoride ion to a dichloromethane(DCM) solution of AM-PDIs resulted in an obvious color change (from red to blackish green) because of a large red shift (151 nm) in absorption. The recognition mechanism was attributed to the intermolecular proton transfer between a hydrogen atom on the amide N position of sensor and the fluoride anion. Abstract:A novel fluoride ion-triggered dual fluorescence molecular switch based on naphthalimides winged zinc porphyrin (1) was designed and prepared. The fluorescence of the zinc porphyrin unit could be regulated "ON-OFF" on the excitation of 365 nm and "OFF-ON" on the excitation of 504 nm, respectively, in the presence of fluoride ion. The obvious color changes induced by the intermolecular proton transfer on N-H fragments are clearly visible to the naked eye.

Abstract:In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the research of photoswitchable probes. These probes undergo reversible structural and electronic changes upon light exposure, thus exhibiting vast potential in molecular detection, biological imaging, material science, and information storage. Through precisely engineered molecular structures, the photoswitchable probes can toggle between "on" and "off" states at specific wavelengths, enabling highly sensitive and selective detection of targeted analytes. This review systematically presents photoswitchable fluorescent and colorimetric probes built on various molecular photoswitches, primarily focusing on the types involving photoswitching in their detection and/or signal response processes. It begins with an analysis of various molecular photoswitches, including their photophysical properties, photoisomerization and photochromic mechanisms, and fundamental design concepts for constructing photoswitchable probes. The article then elaborates on the applications of these probes in detecting diverse targets, including cations, anions, small molecules, and biomacromolecules. Finally, it offers perspectives on the current state and future development of photoswitchable probes. This review aims to provide a clear introduction for researchers in the field and guidance for the design and application of new, efficient fluorescent and colorimetric probes.

Abstract:The novel (S)-BINOL-based sensor 1 incorporating triazole moieties could be obtained by click reaction. The results show that 1 can exhibit excellent fluorescence response behaviors toward Hg2+ (selective switching-off) and Ag+ (selective switching-on) without interference from other metal ions, which functions as a molecular switch. This work can expand the application of click reaction in design and synthesis of the novel fluorescence sensor molecules.

Abstract:In this work, a series of dibenzimidazole derivatives 1-4, act as highly reversible colorimetric and fluorescent pH chemosensor, were designed and synthesized. Excellent reversible pH response of these sensors could be found by a specific pH change through obvious fluorescent color changes. The response is not affected by common cations (including Al3+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+) and anions (including F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, ClO4-, H2PO4-, HSO4-, HCO3- and CH3COO-). Notably, these sensors can be reused more than 10 times without losing functionality. Unlike previous reports, the distinct properties of 1-4 are attributed to the varied link groups. Based on comprehensive experimental data and mechanistic analyses, it is concluded that sensors 1-4 are promising candidates for use as highly reversible "on-off-on" fluorescence switches under precise pH control.

Abstract:We report an easy-to-prepare fluorescent chemosensor, 4-benzoylamido-N-butyl-1,8-naphthalimide, which is sensitive to fluoride ions. The sensor shows spectral shifts and intensity changes in the presence of fluoride, in a wavelength-ratiometric and -colorimetric manner, which can detect fluoride concentrations in a range of 20–100 µM at visible wavelengths. The striking colorless-to-yellow color change and blue-to-orange emission color change are thought to be due to the deprotonation of the 4-amido moiety of the naphthalimide fluorophore. The sensor compound shows great promise for the selective detection of fluoride in the presence of other halides because none of those are likely to deprotonate the amide.
