Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR) effects have been shown as the principles of some highlysensitive sensors in recent decades. Due to the advances in nano-fabrication technology, the plasmon nano-array sensors based on SPR and LSPR phenomena have been widely used in chemical and bioloical analysis. Sensing with surface-enhanced field and sensing for refractive index changes are able to identify the analytes quantitatively and qualitatively. With the newly developed ultrasensitive plasmonic biosensors, platforms with excellent performance have been built for various biomedical applications, including point-of-care diagnosis and personalized medicine. In addition, flexible integration of plasmonics nano-arrays and combining them with electrochemical sensing have significantly enlarged the application scenarios of the plasmonic nano-array sensors, as well as improved the sensing accuracy.

Abstract:The nanoscale Lycurgus cup arrays were hybrid structures of nanocups and nanoparticles with ultrasensitivity to refractive index change. In this study, an electrochemical localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor was developed by coupling electrochemistry to LSPR spectroscopy measurement on the nanoscale cup arrays (nanoCA). Based on the combination of electrochemistry and LSPR measurement, the electrochemical LSPR on nanoCA was observed with significant resonance wavelength shifts in electrochemical modulation. The synchronous implementation of cyclic voltammetry and optical transmission spectrum can be used to obtain multiply sensing information and investigate the enhancement for LSPR from electrochemical scanning. The electrochemical enhanced LSPR was utilized as biosensor to detect biomolecules. The electrochemical LSPR biosensor with synchronous electrochemical and optical implement showed higher sensitivity than that of conventional optical LSPR measurement. Detecting with multi-transducer parameters and high sensitivity, the electrochemical LSPR provided a promising approach for chemical and biological detection.

Abstract:Nowdays, the study of measurement of the biological field focuses on the research of improving surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the fields of integration and detection sensitivity. We designed a kind of grating connected surface plasmon resonance sensor. Theoretically, we analyzed the wave vector and the effective refractive index relations with the diffraction grating structure. Then we obtained the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure with a resolution 10 times higher than that of traditional SPR sensors. Also, we used the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis and simulation which showed that it was obvious with coupling effect by the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure that the reflectance spectral bandwidth results validated the structure significantly which improved the sensitivity. Experimental results showed that the dynamic response of the designed sensor reached 10 −6 RIU (refractive index unit). This study has the certain significance to long-distance and special sensing applications.

Abstract:Using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, optical properties are investigated for a sensor comprising a two-dimensional array of gold cubes placed on quartz pillars on a quartz substrate. Background condition is analyzed for an approximate ideal collective resonance. It is found that the resonance intensity is mainly determined by the quartz etch depth, and the spectra valley position depends mainly on the lattice period. Thickness of the gold film affects the wavelength of the transmission spectra slightly, which gives a low processing tolerance requirement for fabrication. Sensitivity of the biosensor is also discussed, spectral sensitivity as high as 596.7nm/refractive index unit (RIU) is obtained in the visible light region, making it an excellent candidate for liquid detection.

Abstract:We propose refractive index sensors based on Ag-metalized nanolayer in microstructured optical fibers. The surface plasmon resonance modes and the sensing properties are theoretically analyzed using finite element method (FEM). In the calculation, Drude–Lorentz model is used to describe the Metal Dielectric constant. The calculation results show that the sensitivity of Ag-metalized SPR sensor can reach 1500nm/RIU corresponding to a resolution of 6.67×10−5RIU. Comparing with conventional detecting material-Au under the same structure, the sensitivity and 3dB bandwidth of our device are better.

Abstract:Biochemical sensors have drawn extensive attention for cell/molecular detection, health care, and food safety. Biochemical sensing devices conventionally built with single or double functions show a lack of functionality, which impedes integrated sensing systems but also limits various practical applications. Here, we report a switchable multifunctional gold nanopillar array biochemical sensor that is based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Biochemical sensors can be used to measure a wide variety of spectral signals such as absorption spectra, fluorescence, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) performance and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Specifically, based on the absorption spectroscopy results, the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of ethylene glycol (EG, concentration is 20%) is 489.6 nm/RIU. Furthermore, the limit detection of SERS performance for rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye is 10(-8) M, and the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) is 2.5 x 10(8). Our theoretical and experimental data demonstrate that this nanoscale-based metasurface presents promise potential for in situ biomedical sensing, immunoassay and cell/molecular spectroscopy applications.
Ultrahigh sensitive surface plasmon sensor using a nanofilm coated D-type photonic crystal fiber

Abstract:We investigate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, D-type photonic crystal fiber-based refractive index microbiosensor that works on surface plasmon resonance. We study the performance of the proposed sensor using the finite element method. Further, we analyze the influence of various materials, namely, gold, silver, and indium tin oxide that are deposited on the D-type fiber surface. Of these metals, gold has been examined to be advantageous owing to its enhanced sensitivity and greater chemical stability. The proposed microbiosensor exhibits a high wavelength sensitivity of 19,000 nm/RIU in the sensing range of 1.40-1.41, and its wavelength interrogation resolution is 5.26 x 10(-6) RIU. Besides, this novel scheme provides a high amplitude sensitivity of 569 RIU-1 with the corresponding resolution of 2.63 x 10(-6) RIU. Further, the linearity of the proposed microbiosensor, R-2, is 0.9745 in the sensing environment of the refractive index ranging between 1.31 and 1.40. Finally, optimizing the metal coating thickness, diameter of the air-hole, and the lattice pitch of the proposed sensor have been conducted systematically, in order to augment the sensing performance of the proposed sensor. We foresee that the proposed microbiosensor would turn out to be an appropriate candidate in sensing the analyzes of high refractive index. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America

Abstract:To improve the limit of detection in a nanoplasmonic sensor system, the optical performance of the metal nanostructures should be optimized according to the best spectral window of the measurement instrument. We propose that the spectral window from 1460 to 1610 nm can potentially provide ultrahigh instrumental resolution for biosensing. We optimized gold nanoring arrays such that the extinction peak position is inside the proposed window, the extinction peak is sharp enough to track the peak shift with high resolution and the figure of merit (sensitivity/linewidth) of the array is optimized at the same time. The peak-sharpening effect of the array caused by coherent interaction plays a central role in the optimization. The optimized array has a lattice constant in the range [1000 nm,1060 nm], a bulk index sensitivity of around 450 nm/RIU and a figure of merit larger than 4. It is an enabling sensor element for a near-infrared sensor chip with ultrahigh resolution.

Abstract:This paper mainly studies the plasma optical properties of the silver nanorod and gold film system with gap structure. During the experiment, the finite element analysis method and COMSOL Multiphysics are used for modeling and simulation. The study changes the thickness of the PE spacer layer between the silver nanorod and the gold film, the conditions of the incident light and the surrounding environment medium. Due to the anisotropic characteristics of silver nanorod, the microcavity system is extremely sensitive to the changes of internal and external conditions, and the system exhibits strong performance along the long axis of the nanorod. By analyzing the extinction spectrum of the nanoparticle and the electric field section diagrams at resonance peak, it is found that the plasma optical properties of the system greatly depend on the gap distance, and the surrounding electric field of the silver nanorod is confined in the gap. Both ends of the nanorod and the gap are distributed with high concentrations of hot spots, which reflects the strong hybridization of multiple resonance modes. Under certain excitation conditions, the plasma hybridization behavior will produce a multi-pole mode, and the surface electric field distribution of the nanorod reflects the spatial directionality. In addition, the system is also highly sensitive to the environmental media, which will cause significant changes in its optical properties. The plasma microcavity system with silver nanorod and gold film studied in this paper can be used to develop high-sensitivity biosensors, which has great value in the field of biomedical detection.

Abstract:We present a simple, unique, and highly sensitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) biosensor. Besides having very high sensitivity, our proposed sensor is also fabrication friendly. The finite element method (FEM) of COMSOL 5.3a was utilized to devise the sensor's structure and analyze the impact of changing geometric parameters on this biosensor's overall performance. Gold (Au) or AZO (aluminum-doped zinc oxide) can be utilized to create excitation between the two modes (core and plasmonic). We have tried to vary different parameters of the PCF, and we observed in simulation results a very high amplitude sensitivity (AS) of 4358.09 RIU−1, maximum wavelength sensitivity (WS) of 21,000 nm/RIU (refractive index unit), a high figure of merits (FOM) of 729 with a sensor resolution of 4.76 × 10−6 RIU and 2.29 × 10−6 RIU for wavelength, and amplitude respectively when gold was utilized as the plasmonic material. Replacing gold by AZO resulted in the corresponding values of 3908 RIU−1, 1700 nm/RIU, 792, 5.88 × 10−5 RIU, and 2.56 × 10−6 RIU. Analyte refractive index (RI) ranges between 1.33–1.42 for gold and 1.31–1.39 for AZO. We believe the high performance of our proposed SPR based PCF biosensor in terms of sensitivity will bring a promising advancement in the field of unknown analyte detection and biological organic chemicals.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based sensors play an important role in the biological and medical fields, and improving the sensitivity is a goal that has always been pursued. In this paper, a sensitivity enhancement scheme jointly employing MoS2 nanoflower (MNF) and nanodiamond (ND) to co-engineer the plasmonic surface was proposed and demonstrated. The scheme could be easily implemented via physically depositing MNF and ND overlayers on the gold surface of an SPR chip, and the overlayer could be flexibly adjusted by controlling the deposition times, thus approaching the optimal performance. The bulk RI sensitivity was enhanced from 9682 to 12,219 nm/RIU under the optimal condition that successively deposited MNF and ND 1 and 2 times. The proposed scheme was proved in an IgG immunoassay, where the sensitivity was twice enhanced compared to the traditional bare gold surface. Characterization and simulation results revealed that the improvement arose from the enhanced sensing field and increased antibody loading via the deposited MNF and ND overlayer. At the same time, the versatile surface property of NDs allowed a specifically-functionalized sensor using the standard method compatible with a gold surface. Besides, the application for pseudorabies virus detection in serum solution was also demonstrated.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing is a real-time detection technique for measuring biomolecular interactions on gold surfaces. This study presents a novel approach using nano-diamonds (NDs) on a gold nano-slit array to obtain an extraordinary transmission (EOT) spectrum for SPR biosensing. We used anti-bovine serum albumin (anti-BSA) to bind NDs for chemical attachment to a gold nano-slit array. The covalently bound NDs shifted the EOT response depending on their concentration. The number of ND-labeled molecules attached to the gold nano-slit array was quantified from the change in the EOT spectrum. The concentration of anti-BSA in the 35 nm ND solution sample was much lower than that in the anti-BSA-only sample (approximately 1/100). With the help of 35 nm NDs, we were able to use a lower concentration of analyte in this system and obtained better signal responses. The responses of anti-BSA-linked NDs had approximately a 10-fold signal enhancement compared to anti-BSA alone. This approach has the advantage of a simple setup and microscale detection area, which makes it suitable for applications in biochip technology.

Abstract:High-sensitivity gold-coated photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index (RI) biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is proposed. To evaluate the sensing characteristics of the proposed sensor, the finite element method (FEM) is used. As a base material, silica is used and as a plasmonic material, 40-nm thickness gold layer is chosen. Resonance of electrons requires active plasmonic material. Gold is chosen because it has the highest plasmonic activity of all active plasmonic materials and offers the best resonance. The uppermost wavelength sensitivity response of 45,409.14 nm/RIU is obtained at RI 1.35. The maximum amplitude resolution, amplitude sensitivity response, birefringence, transmittance, coupling length, and dispersion of 2.52 × 10 −05 , 7679.06 RIU −1 , 3.1 × 10 −4 , − 24.5 dB, 1,87,500 μm, and − 7000 ps/(nm-km) are obtained respectively. The proposed sensor is a strong contender for detecting microfluidic analytes in the biosensor field for its exceptional sensitivity response, compact structural design, and tunable performance.

Abstract:A simple two-layer refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon resonance has been proposed in this work, which evinces high sensitivity for detecting unknown analytes. This sensor design includes hexagonal- and octagonal-shaped air-hole rings, which have been introduced in the first and second layers, respectively. By performing this amalgamation of different types of air holes, this gold-coated plasmonic sensing scheme provides the broad sensing limit of the analyte, which is 1.32–1.40. The sensing performance has been examined by applying the finite element method, which is being used for modeling complex and irregular-shaped geometry. The wavelength interrogation method has demonstrated a maximal wavelength sensitivity of 9,000 nm/RIU (refractive index unit). The maximal amplitude sensitivity of 1902 RIU −1 has been exhibited in the y-polarized mode using the amplitude interrogation method. Moreover, the maximal sensor resolution of 1.11 × 10 −5 RIU covers the entire sensing range. Furthermore, by adjusting the air-hole diameter, pitch, and depth of the gold layer coating, many more investigations have been demonstrated in this design. This highly sensitive sensor is very convincing to be used in many applications like chemical, biological, and also in physical sensing analyses.

Abstract:<p>The main challenge for all biosensors is how to measure the biological samples at very low concentrations. In this paper, a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fiber biosensor using multi-layer gold nanoparticles (Au NPs)/Au film coupling to enhance sensitivity was proposed. The coupling effect between such longitudinally aligned multilayer nanoparticles increases the intensity of the local electromagnetic field and the depth of propagation to the outside. We used the finite element method to analyze the local enhancement effect of multi-layer Au nanospheres and Au nanorods, and the fabricated double-layer Au NPs (Au nanospheres and Au nanorods)/Au film coupling enhancement sensors. These two sensors' refractive index sensitivities are 15,747 nm/RIU and 25,642 nm/RIU, respectively. By changing biomolecules immobilized on the sensor's surface, the highly sensitive double-layer Au nanoparticle/Au film fiber sensor enables high-precision measurement of different biomarkers at low concentration. For detection of human IgG, the detection limit of gold nanosphere sensor is 10 ng/mL and gold nanorod sensor is 4.6 ng/mL.</p>

Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on a dual-side polished microstructured optical fiber (MOF) with a dual core is proposed for a large analyte refractive index (RI; na) detection range. Gold is used as a plasmonic material coated on the polished surface, and analytes can be directly contacted with the gold film. The special structure not only facilitates the fabrication of the sensor, but also can work in the na range of 1.42–1.46 when the background material RI is 1.45, which is beyond the reach of other traditional MOF-SPR sensors. The sensing performance of the sensor was investigated by the wavelength and amplitude interrogation methods. The detailed numerical results showed that the proposed sensor can work effectively in the na range of 1.35–1.47 and exhibits higher sensitivity in the na range of 1.42–1.43.

Abstract:Integration of functional nanomaterials with optical micro/nanofibers (OMNFs) can bring about novel optical properties and provide a versatile platform for various sensing applications. OMNFs as the key element, however, have seldom been investigated. Here, we focus on the optimization of fiber diameter by taking micro/nanofiber-based localized surface plasmon resonance sensors as a model. We systematically study the dependence of fiber diameter on the sensing performance of such sensors. Both theoretical and experimental results show that, by reducing fiber diameter, the refractive index sensitivity can be significantly increased. Then, we demonstrate the biosensing capability of the optimized sensor for streptavidin detection and achieve a detection limit of 1 pg/mL. Furthermore, the proposed theoretical model is applicable to other nanomaterials and OMNF-based sensing schemes for performance optimization.
High sensitivity refractive index sensor with wide detection range and high linearity based on LSPR in hollow-core anti-resonance fiber

Abstract:A high sensitivity refractive index sensor based on local surface plasmon resonance in hollow-core anti-resonance fiber with wide detection range and high linearity is proposed. Gold nanowires are filled in two symmetric cladding tubes of the hollow-core anti-resonance fiber, and analyte is filled in the fiber core area. A full vectorial finite element method is used to design and analyze the hollow-core anti-resonance fiber sensor based on local surface plasmon resonance. High average wavelength sensitivity around 14996.81 nm/RIU is achieved in a wide refractive index detection range of 1.28–1.44 with high linearity of 0.99991. The maximum figure of merits of the sensor reaches 139.78 RIU −1 . This separate filling of analyte and sensitive material opens up convenience applications for microfluidic detection. Due to its high sensitivity, wide detection range and high linearity of response, the proposed refractive index sensor also has potential applications in environmental protection, food safety and biosensing.

Herein, we proposed, for the first time to our best knowledge, to integrate NDs on a plasmonic interface constructed on a side-polished fiber using drop-casting method. The NDs engineers the plasmonic interface towards improving the sensing field thus the sensitivity, which, moreover, is dependent on the number of drop-casting cycles (DCs) and the used concentration of NDs dispersion solution. Experimental results suggest that properly increasing the NDs dispersion concentration is beneficial to obtain a higher sensitivity while using a fewer number of DCs, but the excessive concentration extremely deteriorates the resonance dip. Using the 0.2 mg/mL concentration and 3 DCs, we achieve the highest RI sensitivity of 3582 nm/RIU, which shows an enhancement of 73.8% compared to the case without NDs modification. The sensitivity enhancement in biosensing is also proved by employing bovine serum albumin as a demo. The behind mechanism is explored via characterizations and simulations. This work opens up a new application form for NDs, i.e. integrating NDs with a plasmonic interface towards high-performance biosensing.

Optimizing Plasmonic Gold Nanorod Deposition on Glass Surfaces for High-Sensitivity Refractometric Biosensing

Abstract:Owing to high surface sensitivity, gold nanorods (AuNRs) are widely used to construct surface-based nanoplasmonic biosensing platforms for label-free molecular diagnostic applications. A key fabrication step involves controlling AuNR deposition onto the target surface, which requires maximizing surface density while minimizing inter-particle aggregation, and is often achieved by surface functionalization with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) prior to AuNR deposition. To date, existing studies have typically used a fixed concentration of SAM-forming organic molecules (0.2-10% v/v) while understanding how SAM density affects AuNR deposition and resulting sensing performance would be advantageous. Herein, we systematically investigated how controlling the (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) concentration (1-30% v/v) during SAM preparation affects the fabrication of AuNR-coated glass surfaces for nanoplasmonic biosensing applications. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible spectroscopy, we identified an intermediate APTES concentration range that yielded the highest density of individually deposited AuNRs with minimal aggregation and also the highest peak wavelength in aqueous solution. Bulk refractive index sensitivity measurements indicated that the AuNR configuration had a strong effect on the sensing performance, and the corresponding wavelength-shift responses ranged from 125 to 290 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) depending on the APTES concentration used. Biosensing experiments involving protein detection and antigen-antibody interactions further demonstrated the high surface sensitivity of the optimized AuNR platform, especially in the low protein concentration range where the measurement shift was ~8-fold higher than that obtained with previously used sensing platforms.
