Abstract:A multiple random scattering ray-tracing model is developed for predicting the distribution of sound pressure levels in a three dimensional space of any kinds of rooms. This model considers the reflection and absorption on the surface of each wall and the scattering caused by the objects distributed randomly in the room. The objects therein like machines, furniture, etc. are regarded as obstacles which scatter the sound, so that the sound propagation is shown as a multiple scattering process. Thus the sound pressure level distribution in a diffuse sound field can be calculated more precisely.

Abstract:With the development of computer simulation technique for room acoustics, diffuse reflection is considered more and more important. In this paper, some models are developed by considering two diffuse factors in a room-diffuse reflection due to room surfaces and scattering due to objects. The surface diffusion is treated by two different methods on the basis of probability analysis or Energy Conservation Law, and the scattering among objects is simulated as a multiple random ray-tracing process. Thus the sound pressure level distribution in a diffuse sound field can be calculated more precisely and easily. Agreement between the computer simulation results and measurements shows the accuracy of the mathematical and physical model and the applicability of the computer simulation methods. These models can be used in noise control engineering, as well as in the practice of acoustical design.

Abstract:Understanding signal fading effect is essential for the application of Rayleigh-scattering-based distributed acoustic fibre sensors (DASs) due to the nature of coherent beam interference within the pulse length. Statistical properties for the intensity of the Rayleigh backscattered light (i.e. intensity fading) and its impact on the sensitivity of DAS systems have been intensely studied over the last decades. Here we for the first time establish an analytical model for the phase signal retrieved from the dual-pulse heterodyne demodulated DAS system, which can be exploited to investigate the phase fading effect in this system. The developed model reveals that the phase fading phenomenon mainly originates from the randomness in the phase retardant of the Rayleigh scatters. The quantitatively resolved statistical features of the phase fading is confirmed by experimental results. Based on the analytical model, a noise figure is defined to characterize the global fading-induced noise level via taking into account contributions from all channels along the sensing fiber. The model also reproduces the anti-correlation relation between the power spectrum density of retrieved phase at the heterodyne frequency and the phase fading noise level. Following the analysis and the definition of the noise figure, an optimized real-time weighted-channel stack algorithm is developed to efficiently suppress the fading noise. Experimental results show that the algorithm can achieve a maximum noise figure reduction of 15.8 dB without increasing the system complexity.

Abstract:A highly coherent wave is favorable for applications in which phase retrieval is necessary, yet a high-coherence wave is prone to encounter Rayleigh fading phenomenon as it passes through a medium of random scatters. As an exemplary case, a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) utilizes the coherent interference of backscattering light along a fiber to achieve ultra-sensitive acoustic sensing, but sensing locations with fading will not be functional. Apart from the sensing domain, fading is also ubiquitous in optical imaging and wireless telecommunication, and therefore, it is of great interest. In this paper, we theoretically describe and experimentally verify how the fading phenomenon in one-dimensional (1-D) optical scatters will be suppressed with an arbitrary number of independent probing channels. We initially theoretically explained why fading would cause severe noise in the demodulated phase of Phi-OTDR; then, M-degree summation of incoherent scattered light-waves is studied for the purpose of eliminating fading. Finally, the enhancement and the fluctuation of retrieved phase signal-to-noise-ratio were analytically derived and experimentally verified. This paper provides a guideline for the fading elimination in 1-D optical scatters, and it also provides insight for optical imaging and wireless telecommunication.

Abstract:Fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) measure acoustic waves by demodulating the phase variations of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signals in a sensing optical fiber. However, in harsh environments, strong environmental background interference, coupled with the interference fading of the RBS, would introduce severe distortions in DAS signal that cannot be corrected or even can be worsened by phase unwrapping, thus resulting in low signal to noise ratio (SNR) and even undetectable signal. In this work, a novel method based on trend prediction is proposed to correct the distortions induced by phase unwrapping error around the fading points. The method is further validated in processing the data acquired from a field test performed in ocean environments using a home-built DAS system. By locating and erasing the distortion points, and then detrending, the acoustic signal buried in strong environmental background interference is retrieved with an SNR improvement greater than 10 dB. The results show that the proposed phase correction method can effectively enhance DAS's SNR for those challenging applications with strong background interference.

Abstract:Due to the inherent characteristic of coherent fading phenomenon, the performance of distributed acoustic sensing system will be severely degraded, producing anomalous information and positioning errors. In order to suppress the influence of this phenomenon, the data array of demodulated results is obtained after processing the collected distributed Rayleigh scattering signals along the sensing fiber, which can be utilized to construct a two-dimension (2D) image with the time–distance domain information. Thus, this allows us to remove the abnormal information that are introduced by fading noise. Based on this principle, a morphology compositional analysis (MCA) scheme, an effective time–frequency domain linkage algorithm, is applied to the constructed 2D images to enhance the sensing accuracy. Compared with traditional methods including the 2D mean value filter (MVF) and 2D wavelet transform (WT), the proposed method makes full use of the independence of image source property and abnormity feature so that the abnormal information caused by the coherent fading can be eliminated without deteriorating the source information along the sensing fiber. Experimental results show that the anomaly rate of the time–distance domain information along the sensing fiber for the proposed method, the MVF method and the WT method can be reduced by 92.43%, 65.05% and 70.18% respectively. In addition, the isolation degree of the MCA, MVF and WT methods are 41, 16.02 and 23.35 times higher than that treated by traditional method, respectively. Also, the stability of the time-domain vibration can be improved and the spatial resolution would not be influenced by the proposed method compared with the traditional method. This scheme will promote the development of distributed acoustic sensor system with high-accuracy and high-quality without any hardware modification.

Abstract:Abstract The classical geometrical theory of diffraction is not available for simulating multiple diffractions in wave propagation. To improve the simulating accuracy for multiple diffractions, a multiple acoustic diffraction simulating method based on ray iteration tracing is proposed in this paper. In this method, the ray occurring at the edge of the wall is split into multiple sub-rays. Then, these sub-rays are continually traced based on the classical ray-tracing theory. The numerical verification demonstrates that this method is valid for simulating multiple diffractions.

Abstract:A novel distributed acoustic sensing technique is proposed that exploits both phase and amplitude of the Rayleigh backscattered light to quantify the environmental variation. The system employs a wavelength-scanning laser and an imbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer to acquire the reflection spectra and the phase of the detected light, respectively. Fading-free and low-frequency measurements are realized via the cross-correlation of the reflection spectra. The discrete cross-correlation is used to circumvent the nonlinear frequency sweeping of the laser. Based on the phase of the backscattered light, it is possible to quantify fast environmental variations. The whole system requires no hardware modification of the existing system and its functionality is experimentally validated. The proposed system has the potential to monitor ground motion/movement at very low frequency band like subsidence around mining areas and at high frequency band like earthquakes and vibrations induced by avalanches.

Abstract:Accurate ranging between underwater communication nodes and reliable underwater acoustic communication technology are indispensable for large-scale oceanic studies. Effectively combining ranging and communication methods and applying them in underwater acoustic modems is an attractive strategy worth studying. To meet these requirements, we propose an asynchronous time delay estimation (ATDE) for accurate ranging. The ATDE exploits the Linear Frequency Modulated (LFM) waveform, which is originally used for synchronization of communication signals, to enable the modem to function as an Integrated Communication and Ranging System (ICRS). An adaptive retransmission algorithm is put forward to improve the reliability of communication based on the range and signal to noise ratio (SNR) obtained from ATDE. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed ranging method and the superiority of the retransmission algorithm in terms of throughput and false packet rate when compared with the conventional method. A preliminary field experiment is conducted near Zhairuoshan Island in Zhoushan Archipelagoes, Zhejiang Province, China, using self-developed modems. Both the simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has robust ranging ability and offers more reliable data transmission in underwater acoustic communication.

Abstract:Distributed fiber acoustic sensing (DAS) has appealing application prospects. DAS is usually based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and similar techniques, which can sense the phase change of in-fiber Rayleigh backscattering light caused by the outside perturbation. Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensors provide a powerful instrumentation for ultrasound testing to identify the internal crack and deformation with the location for assessing structural conditions and predicting the potential structural failure. This paper provides a tutorial review of the milestones leading to the development of the distributed acoustic sensor based on Rayleigh back scattering. It offers discussion on basic principles, optical configurations and system design requirement, various detection schemes, performance limitations and applications for the maximum measurable frequency, minimum detectable strain and highest spatial resolution. A final comment on the prospects of the further developments is presented.

Abstract:Fading noise is a crucial problem in a distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) system, which can severely degrade the system’s ability on distributed detection. In this article, we systematically studied the mechanism and characteristics of fading noise in a dual-pulse heterodyne demodulated DAS system. Results show that fading noise not only causes big fading errors in signal, but also leads to amplitude distortion of seismic wave. We propose the sort and average over trace (SAOT) algorithm to eliminate the fading noise of DAS data. After implementation of the algorithm on the simulated DAS data, the big fading error can be eliminated 100%, and the residual standard deviation can be reduced by 32 dB. Meanwhile, the correlation between the processed data and the noise-free data is improved by 29 dB. Then, the performance of the algorithm is further verified by laboratory experiment, achieving a residual standard deviation reduction of 33 dB. Finally, the algorithm can perfectly eliminate the fading noise in vertical seismic profile (VSP) DAS data and surface seismic DAS data obtained at the oilfield site.

Abstract:Using the rigorous acoustic scattering theory, we analyze the two-dimensional acoustic superscatterer , which is constructed by coating acoustic double-negative material on the rigid cylinder in the pressure field, and numerically confirm it by full-wave simulations. Furthermore, we propose the multilayer realization approach with isotropic material and finding the realization might be unsuccessful if the mass densities are complex conjugate pair in the alternating layers. The improved approach is also obtained.

Abstract:An acoustic ray tracing model considering the real atmospheric acoustic attenuation is developed base on the equation of the acoustic local dispersion relation in the stratified atmosphere. The acoustic attenuation coefficient and growth factor in the moving atmosphere are deduced from the imaginary part of the dispersion relation, and the acoustic attenuation coefficient is corrected by using the theory of attenuation in the real atmosphere. The ray equations in the lossy atmosphere are obtained through Hamilton equations. The numerical study of this ray tracing model shows that the absorption of sound could have some influence to the acoustic trajectory. The influence could be neglected in the near field propagation but not in the far field.

Abstract:A virtual-block-array phase analysis method is proposed for the fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensor. The sensing fiber is divided into a serial of discrete virtual blocks according to the pulse spatial length. The phase variation caused by acoustic events is obtained by combining the operation of the temporal differential process between traces and local spatial average in virtual blocks. The linear frequency-modulated probe pulse produces phase compensation effects at the event location. High signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurement is verified by simulation and experiment. The reconstructed waveform of 1.5 kHz sinusoidal signal showed a root mean square error of 0.0359 and an SNR of 47.28 dB.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a highly sensitive quasi-distributed fiber-optic acoustic sensing system. This system interrogates a weak reflector array by using phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry with coherent detection. A phase-noise-compensated configuration is proposed to reduce the influence of 1/f noise, which is the main limitation when coherent detection is used in this high-sensitivity system. In the experiment to simulate the scenario with a link loss of 20 km fiber and 10 m array interval, the noise level shows an acoustic signal sensitivity of 3.84 pϵ/√Hz at 10-2500 Hz.
