Abstract:Abstract A 63-year-old woman on rituximab maintenance for follicular lymphoma presented with headaches, vomiting, and fever, and was diagnosed with eastern equine encephalomyelitis by cerebrospinal fluid polymerase chain reaction. Eastern equine encephalomyelitis immunoglobulin (Ig)G/IgM remained negative due to rituximab treatment, and magnetic resonance imaging showed minimal abnormalities, making this a diagnostically challenging case. Despite therapy with intravenous Ig, the patient rapidly declined and died on hospital day 12. Autopsy revealed perivascular and parenchymal chronic inflammation, with an absence of B lymphocytes, and virally infected neurons throughout the central nervous system.

Abstract:We propose a novel nodeless conjoined-tube hollow-core fiber (CT-HCF) with elliptical arcs as negative curvature boundaries to limit the leakage of transmitted light. The cladding nodes are effectively eliminated by the attachment of arcs to the outermost dielectric tube. Numerical simulations performed using the full-vector finite element method show that a significant reduction in fiber loss over a wide bandwidth can be obtained. The confinement losses for the proposed fiber are two orders of magnitude lower than those obtained for a typical CT-HCF. The total loss, including confinement loss and surface scattering loss, is also investigated. The proposed fiber shows a loss of less than 0.1 dB/km for a bandwidth of 450 nm, with a minimum loss of 6.58·10-5 dB/m at 1.45 μm. Moreover, the proposed fiber exhibits good single-mode performance, with the higher-order mode extinction ratio reaching a maximum value of 39341 at 1.7 μm.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:Subwavelength diameter micro/nanofiber (MNF) provides excellent platform for many applications. In this work, we fabricate subwavelength diameter MNFs with ultra-long waist and analyze the propagation loss origin for such fibers. Transmittance as high as 99.4% is measured for MNF with a waist length of 10 cm and diameter of $1.2\mu \text{m}$ , and the loss is mainly resulted from the modal leakage of the taper. However, when the MNF is getting longer and thinner, the intrinsic surface roughness induced during the fabrication process overrides the modal leakage and plays a major role in the propagation loss. Our study reveals existence of an ultimate transmission limitation for ultra-long MNFs.

Abstract:We report a quasi single-mode fiber setting an absolute low attenuation record of 0.1400 dB/km at 1560 nm or 0.1407 at 1550 nm. The fiber core is silica-based, doped with halides (Cl, F) and an alkali oxide (K2O). This core composition, along with the improved profile design, glass making and draw process conditions, provides an exceptionally low Rayleigh scattering coefficient and small angle scattering loss. The record low loss was achieved in a fiber with higher mode field confinement in the core and reduced intensity at the core-clad interface and in the cladding.

Abstract:We have fabricated a 0.8-km long high performance antiresonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) with a transmission attenuation of ~12 dB/km. And its bending loss behavior has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The fabricated AR-HCF exhibits an outstanding anti-bending performance in wide wavelength range from 1300 nm to 1750 nm, and an ultralow bending loss @ 1612nm ≤10 dB/km at a bend radius of 1.6 cm is obtained.

Abstract:We propose a hollow-core fiber structure consisting of multilayer nested stadium-shaped tubes (HC-SSF), designed to reduce attenuation in the near-infrared bands for communications. The HC-SSF exhibits low loss characteristics, resulting in a four-order-of-magnitude attenuation reduction in confinement loss. The proposed HC-SSF achieves a confinement loss of 3 . 42 × 1 0 − 9 dB/m at 1.30 μ m , while maintaining favorable single-mode characteristics and excellent bend resistance. At a bend radius of 8 cm, the HC-SSF demonstrates a bend-introduced loss of 1 . 72 × 1 0 − 7 dB/m at 1.30 μ m . The total loss of HC-SSF remains below 0.1 dB/km within the 1.15 μ m to 2.0 μ m range. Due to its high fabrication tolerance and simple structure, the HC-SSF offers valuable reference for the extensive application of hollow-core fiber in the field of communication. It has a wide range of promising applications in gas and liquid sensing, and optical communications.

Abstract:A hollow anti-resonant fiber with nested and double cladding structure is proposed. By optimizing the structural parameters, the confinement loss reaches 4 × 10 − 4 dB / km at 1.55 μm, and the ratio of high-order mode loss to fundamental mode loss also reaches 20,000. In the O + E + S + C + L + U band, the loss is <0.01 dB / km and the ratio of high-order mode loss to fundamental mode loss is >103, indicating that the designed fiber has excellent single-mode characteristics and wide bandwidth. In addition, the manufacturing tolerance of the fiber is also discussed. It is found that the loss can still be maintained below 0.01 dB / km within the tolerance range of 8%. Therefore, we believe that the fiber has potential applications in near-infrared communication and data transmission.

Abstract:Three types of hollow-core fibers, i.e., photonic-bandgap fiber, negative-curvature fiber, and conjoined-tube fiber, are compared in terms of data transmission performance. Their group velocity dispersions and group indices are measured in detail by using low-coherence interferometry. Whilst all three fibers show good performance with an optimized central launch, they behave differently under offset launch for 10 Gbit/s on-off keying transmission. We use a Q(2)-factor analysis method to gain insight into the data transmission over a hollow-core fiber. The low-loss, low-intermodal crosstalk conjoined-tube fiber shows great resilience to bending and offset launch compared to the other two hollow-core fibers, enabling genuine penalty-free data transmission in realistic environments. Abstract:Hollow-core fibers are inherently multimode, making it crucial to filter out higher-order modes within the shortest possible fiber length for applications such as high speed coherent communications and fiber optic gyroscopes. However, current HCF designs face the challenges of simultaneously achieving ultralow fundamental mode loss and ultrahigh HOM suppression. In this study, we present a novel four fold truncated double nested anti resonant hollow core fiber structure that addresses this challenge. Our 4T-DNANF enables greater control over phase-matching between core modes and air modes in the cladding, allowing for minimized FM loss and substantially increased HOM loss. Experimentally, we fabricated several HCFs: one with an FM loss of 0.1 dB/km and an HOM loss of 430 dB/km, and another with an FM loss of 0.13 dB/km with a HOM loss of 6500 dB/km, resulting in a higher-order mode extinction ratio of 50,000.

Abstract:We systematically studied several of the most traditional hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) structures, with the aim of achieving low confinement loss, single-mode performance, and high insensitivity to bending in the 2 μm band. Moreover, the propagation loss of fundamental mode (FM), higher-order mode (HOMs), and the higher-order mode extinction ratio (HOMER) under different geometric parameters were studied. Analysis showed that the confinement loss of the six-tube nodeless hollow-core anti-resonant fiber at 2 μm was 0.042 dB/km, and its higher-order mode extinction ratio was higher than 9000. At the same time, a confinement loss of 0.040 dB/km at 2 was is achieved in the five-tube nodeless hollow-core anti-resonant fiber, and its higher-order mode extinction ratio was higher than 2700.

Abstract:In recent years, anti-resonant hollow-core fibers (known as AR-HCFs) have gradually become one of the research hotspots. However, their loss and birefringence properties are often difficult to reconcile. In this letter, a new structure of AR-HCF is proposed by analyzing the factors that affect their loss and birefringence. The fiber features a negative curvature core surround, double-layer structures, and two half-tubes containing nested tubes. Based on COMSOL Multiphysics, the designed AR-HCF has a high birefringence of and a low confinement loss of 6.1 dB km−1 at 1550 nm, a bandwidth of 40 nm, bending resistance and single-mode operation.

Abstract:Abstract While optical fibers display excellent performances in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet ranges remain poorly addressed by them. Obtaining better fibers for the short-wavelength range has been restricted, in all fiber optics, by scattering processes. In hollow-core fibers, the scattering loss arises from the core roughness and represents the limiting factor for loss reduction regardless of the cladding confinement power. Here, we report on the reduction of the core surface roughness of hollow-core fibers by modifying their fabrication technique. The effect of the modified process has been quantified and the results showed a root-mean-square surface roughness reduction from 0.40 to 0.15 nm. The improvement in the core surface entailed fibers with ultralow loss at short wavelengths. The results reveal this approach as a promising path for the development of hollow-core fibers with loss that can potentially be orders of magnitude lower than the ones achievable with silica-core counterparts.

Abstract:Negative curvature hollow-core fibers (NC-HCFs) can boost the excellent performance of HCFs in terms of propagation loss, nonlinearity, and latency, while retaining large core and delicate cladding structures, which makes them distinctly different from conventional fibers. Construction of low-loss all-fiber NC-HCF architecture with conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) is important for various applications. Here we demonstrate an efficient and reliable fusion splicing method to achieve low-loss connection between a NC-HCF and a conventional SMF. By controlling the mode-field profile of the SMF with a two-step reverse-tapering method, we realize a record-low insertion loss of 0.88 dB for a SMF/NC-HCF/SMF chain at 1310 nm. Our method is simple, effective, and reliable, compared with those methods that rely on intermediate bridging elements, such as graded-index fibers, and can greatly facilitate the integration of NC-HCFs and promote more advanced applications with such fibers. Abstract:We report on numerical design optimization of hollow-core anti-resonant fibers with the aim of reducing transmission losses. We show that re-arranging the nested anti-resonant tubes in the cladding to be adjacent has the effect of significantly reducing leakage as well as bending losses, and for reaching high loss extinction ratios between the fundamental mode and higher order modes. We investigate two versions of the proposed design, one optimized for the mid-IR and another scaled down version for the near-IR and compare them in detail with previously proposed anti-resonant fiber designs including nested elements. Our proposed design is superior with respect to obtaining the lowest leakage losses and the bend losses are also much lower than for the previous designs. Leakage losses as low as 0.0015 dB/km and bending losses of 0.006 dB/km at 5 cm bending radius are predicted at the ytterbium lasing wavelength 1.06 µm. When optimizing the higher-order-mode extinction ratio, the low leakage loss is sacrificed to get an effective single-mode behavior of the fiber. We show that the higher-order-mode extinction ratio is more than 1500 in the range 1.0-1.1 µm around the ytterbium lasing wavelength, while in the mid-IR it can be over 100 around λ = 2.94 μm. This is higher than the previously considered structures in the literature using nested tubes.

Abstract:A new type of anti-resonant hollow-core fiber for terahertz waveguides is proposed. By introducing central support pillars and an elliptical structure, the fiber achieves high birefringence while maintaining low confinement loss and low material absorption loss. The fiber structure is optimized through simulation using the finite element method. The optimized fiber exhibits a birefringence of up to 1.22 × 10−2 at a frequency of 1 THz, with a confinement loss of 8.34 × 10−6 dB/cm and a material absorption loss of 7.17 × 10−3 dB/cm. Furthermore, when the bending radius of the fiber is greater than 12 cm, the bending loss of the anti-resonant optical fiber at 1 THz is less than 1.36 × 10−4 dB/cm, demonstrating good bending resistance and high practical value. It is expected to play a significant role in optical communication systems.
