Abstract:Vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) shows promising potential in enlarging communication capacity and improving modulation ability for its mode orthogonality. Although various OAM multiplexing schemes have been proposed to boost channel capacity density, few studies have focused on OAM shift keying (OAM-SK) communication because of the lack of rapid and low-latency mode demodulation technologies. In this study, we propose a neural-network-assisted coherent nanophotonic circuit (CNC) strategy for demodulating OAM modes and investigate its application in OAM-SK communication. The CNC comprises 380 Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) and achieves a unitary matrix transformation by simultaneously modulating the amplitude and phase of optical pulses via multi-light interference, where a neural network-assisted design algorithm is used to obtain the phase parameters in the CNC that satisfy the mapping relationship between feature information and OAM modes. Since the satisfied mapping relationship is performed in the optical domain, OAM modes can be demodulated at the speed of light. We show that this CNC can effectively identify the OAM modes ranging from -10 to +10, and the identification accuracy exceeds 90% under moderate turbulence intensity. As a proof of concept, we simulated a hexadecimal OAM-SK communication link, and the OAM signals under turbulent perturbations were successfully demodulated with an accuracy of 99.33%.

Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:Optical lattices have several applications including super-resolution imaging, lithography, and light-tweezers. Compared with the conventional multibeam interference method, optical lattices in a tightly focused light fields are presented by cylindrical vector polarization illumination and multisector amplitude modulation. The polarization and phase difference of the illumination beam, including the size and relative position of the sectors, were analyzed using the vector diffraction theory. The obtained results indicate that the primitive cell shape of optical lattices can be controlled by the polarization direction of the illumination beam when the relative positions of sectors in the amplitude modulation mask are set. In addition, the period and primitive cell shape of optical lattices with hyper or complex constructions can be controlled by the relative positions of sectors, while the optical lattice zone primarily depends on the sector size. By combining polarization and amplitude modulation in a high numerical aperture optical system, these engineered optical lattices are potentially beneficial in expanding their applications.
Digitalizing Self-Assembled Chiral Superstructures for Optical Vortex Processing.

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) chiral superstructures exhibit unique features; that is, polychromatic and spin-determined phase modulation. Here, a concept for digitalized chiral superstructures is proposed, which further enables the arbitrary manipulation of reflective geometric phase and may significantly upgrade existing optical apparatus. By encoding a specifically designed binary pattern, an innovative CLC optical vortex (OV) processor is demonstrated. Up to 25 different OVs are extracted with equal efficiency over a wavelength range of 116 nm. The multiplexed OVs can be detected simultaneously without mode crosstalk or distortion, permitting a polychromatic, large-capacity, and in situ method for parallel OV processing. Such complex but easily fabricated self-assembled chiral superstructures exhibit versatile functionalities, and provide a satisfactory platform for OV manipulation and other cutting-edge territories. This work is a vital step towards extending the fundamental understanding and fantastic applications of ordered soft matter.

Abstract:Helical structures exist universally. Rationally designed cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) superstructures with arrangements of in-plane helical axes realized by W. Hu, L.-J. Chen, and co-workers result in unique fingerprint textures for potential advanced photonic applications. On page 1691, they describe their digital micromirror device-based photoalignment technique and demonstrate the growth of spiral and wave-like continuous gratings, producing CLCs with chirality, depth and integrity, just like our universe.

Abstract:We examined the flexodomains (FDs) in chiral bent-core nematics (BCNs), and demonstrated the morphology changed from parallel stripes in pure BCN to oblique ones in chiral BCNs. While the magnitude of obliqueness angle strongly depended on the concentration of chiral dopant, its sign was determined by the polarity of the driving voltage, thus FDs appeared alternately as symmetrical oblique stripes in the positive and negative half a.c. voltage cycles, respectively. Also the HTP value of chiral dopant in BCNs can be determined based on this phenomenon. The polarity-dependent behavior of FDs can be potentially exploited in photonic devices with a bistable function. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a parallel phase-only lensless optical correlator based on two pieces of Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulators. Phase Fresnel Lens Array and specialized grating are implemented to realize multi-channel and multiplexed LOC. Experimental results of Chinese characters' recognitions are given as demonstration of proposed technique. High uniformity of processing channels has been verified by autocorrelation process of four same Chinese characters. The technique is programmable and adjustment of optical path could be realized without changing of optical setup. The implementations could be performed on the same configuration as single channel optical correlator without mechanical alternation.

Abstract:The capacity of an optical communication system can be greatly increased by using separate orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes as independent channels for signal transmission and encryption. At present, a transmissive OAM mode generator compatible with wavelength division multiplexing is being highly pursued. Here, we introduce a specific double-layer reverse-twist configuration into liquid crystal polymer (LCP) to overcome wavelength dependency. With this design, broadband-applicable OAM array generators are proposed and demonstrated. A Damman vortex grating and a Damman q-plate were encoded via photopatterning two subsequent LCP layers adopted with oppositely handed chiral dopants. Rectangular and hexagonal OAM arrays with mode conversion efficiencies exceeding 40.1% and 51.0% in the ranges of 530 to 930 nm, respectively, are presented. This provides a simple and broadband efficient strategy for beam shaping.

Abstract:Chiroptical response, demonstrating chiral interaction between optical vortex and chiral structure, plays an important role in variety of fields like optics and material science. However, the flexibility and efficiency of chiral structure fabrication are limited due to mask requirement and a point-by-point constructing strategy. In this paper, a novel chiral lithography method is proposed that utilizes optical vortex phase beam shaping to achieve chiral structure processing with high efficiency and flexibility. By programming topological charges of the vortex phase, chiral structures with adjustable appearance, rotation, and chirality can be produced using femtosecond laser single pulse exposure. Transmittance measurements of fabricated chiral structures array confirm a 66% helical dichroism that is predicted by simulation. Moreover, with the aid of convolutional neural networks (CNN), an accuracy of 98% in Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) recognition can be achieved. This chiral lithography method provides an alternative for chiral structure fabrication and holds promise in the development of chiral optics, optical communications, and next-generation optical devices. A novel chiral lithography method is proposed to achieve chiral structure processing with high efficiency and flexibility using optical vortex beam. Chiral structures with adjustable appearance, rotation, and chirality are produced using femtosecond laser single pulse exposure by programming topological charges of the vortex phase. Abstract:Two types of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) fingerprint structures, namely developable-modulation (DM) and growing-modulation (GM), can be contemporaneously prepared in polymer stabilized CLC (PSCLC) composites, to be mutually perpendicular in a repeatable and reversible voltage-switching process when the cell thickness to pitch length ratios (d/P) were appropriately chosen. PSCLC grating structures with interlaced DM/GM fingerprint textures were achieved by varying the applied voltage and sequentially photopolymerizing the dissolved mesogenic monomers through photomasks with stripe and checker patterns. The morphologies of the distinct interlaced PSCLC structures via different UV exposure sequences were investigated under crossed polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimized results suggest that DM gratings should be stabilized before GM gratings. Diffraction measurements reveal polarization-dependent properties of the interlaced DM/GM gratings. The intensity redistribution of diffraction orders in orthogonal direction can be achieved by changing the polarization state of incident laser beam. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Featuring a self-assembled helical nanostructure and external stimuli-responsive chiral photonic band gap, cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) create more opportunities in harnessing multiple degrees of freedom of light, especially the spin and orbital angular momenta (SAM/OAM). Here, we propose and demonstrate an innovative method for a dynamically selective and simultaneous detection of SAM and OAM of light via two cascaded CLC superstructures with thermal controllability and opposite chirality. By independently regulating their temperatures, on-demand selective detection for the intended wavelength and spin eigenstate is achieved with high efficiency and broadband tunability. The information of the desired angular momenta is vividly identified by the reflected diffraction patterns from cascaded chiral superstructures, while the nondetected components are preserved in the transmitted light. This indicates an in situ and nondestructive manner and may facilitate advanced optical manipulation, imaging, and information (de)multiplexing. This work brings important insights into the design, construction, and application of self-assembled chiral nanostructures, promoting multiple and active functionalities in diverse intelligent devices.

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light can be exploited for applications, particularly in high-speed optical communication, and quantum information processing. The authors design and build a liquid-crystal Dammann vortex grating, which can generate a series of equal-energy OAM beams. Abstract:The manipulation of spatial parameters of light is at the cutting edge of optics. It is an interesting and important task to explore wavefront modulation approaches with a continuously tunable working band and dynamically switchable functions. Here, we program the alignment of a polymerizable cholesteric liquid crystal by a dynamic photo-patterning technique. After UV curing and a wash-out-refill process, the designed chiral superstructure is well reconstructed. By this means, a Dammann grating encoded q-plate is fabricated and its function as an optical vortex processor is demonstrated. The working band is electrically tuned and covers a broad range of 137 nm. The switching of mode conversion is achieved on a second scale for given wavelengths based on the electric-driven band shift. This strategy offers a platform for multi-dimensional dynamic control of light and may bring more possibilities to optical imaging, informatics, and micromanipulations.

Abstract:In recent years, optical vortex arrays have attracted increasing attention for their potential applications in numerous areas, such as optical communications, multiple-particle manipulation and parallel laser fabrication. However, the generation of switchable longitudinal vortex arrays remains a great challenge. In this paper, a liquid crystal (LC) spiral Dammann zone plate is designed via the Dammann encoding method and fabricated via the LC photoalignment technology. The experimental results show that this device can create a 1x5 longitudinal vortex array with high efficiency, and with space-variant topological charges. Through tuning the applied voltage, the device can be switched between ON and OFF state dynamically. Besides, the topological charges of the generated longitudinal vortex array can undergo a reversal or additive transformation by horizontally/vertically flipping the device or altering the mode of incident light. The LC spiral Dammann zone plate is distinguished by low cost, high efficiency and electro-optical tunability, thus facilitating the applications of LC elements in the field of multi-dimensional beam shaping.
Structured Light Modal Interface via Liquid-Crystal Planar Optics

Abstract:Recent advances in planar optics with geometric-phase superstructures have brought a new paradigm in the control of structured light and, in particular, has substantially enhanced the capabilities of generating and detecting orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of light and associated spatial modes. However, the structured modal interface that can reciprocally link OAM states via adiabatic control and access-associated higher-order geometric phase remains absent in planar optics. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a planar optical astigmatic retarder fabricated with liquid-crystal (LC) geometric phase. The LC superstructure was designed with the principle of fractional Fourier transformation and is capable of reciprocal conversion between all possible OAM states on the same modal sphere. Such a planar device paves the way towards an easily deployed modal interface of paraxial OAM states, unlocks the resource of higher-order geometric phase, and has promising applications in high-dimensional classical/quantum information.

Abstract:We propose and implement a technique for arbitrary pattern fabrication in liquid crystal (LC) alignments and local polarization control for light wavefront. A micro-lithography system with a digital micro-mirror device as dynamic mask forms arbitrary micro-images on photoalignment layers and further guides the LC molecule orientations. Besides normal phase gratings, more complex 2D patterns such as quasicrystal and checkerboard structures are demonstrated. To characterize the optical performances of the fabricated structures, the electro-optically tunable diffraction patterns and efficiencies are demonstrated in several 1D/2D phase gratings. Compared to other techniques, our method enables the arbitrary and instant manipulation of LC alignments and light polarization states, facilitating wide applications in display and photonic fields. Abstract:A serial of LC gratings are fabricated mainly based on photoalignment, which include (1) Nematic LC grating with alternating 90° twisted nematic (TN) regions and homogeneous alignment (PA). Both 1D and 2D diffraction gratings are demonstrated by periodic photoalignment of sulfonic azo-dye (SD1) films with a linearly polarized light beam. (2) A polarization independent of 1D/2D LC gratings with alternate orthogonal homogeneously aligned regions. No polarizer is employed. (3) A polarizer-free submillisecond response grating employing dual-frequency LC (DFLC) together with patterned hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) structures. To obtain instantly controllable LC microstructures rather than simple gratings, a digital micro-mirror device (DMD) based a micro-lithography system is developed. It may generate arbitrary micro-images on photoalignment layers. Besides normal phase gratings, more complex 2D patterns including quasicrystal structure are demonstrated, which give us more freedom to develop microstructured LC based photonic devices.

Abstract:Novel options for multiplexing, such as orbital angular momentum (OAM), are sought to satisfy the explosive growth of information capacity. Consequently, spatial phase modulation with on-demand tailoring of working bands is increasingly investigated. In this study, a polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal is used to address this requirement. A varying DC voltage is applied, and the working band is increased over eightfold owing to the electric-induced gradient pitch of the polymer network. Thus, the working band of an OAM processor is reversibly switched between narrowband and broadband states. An OAM-multiplexing hologram is designed for parallel OAM encoding and decoding, enabling a wavelength-division-multiplexing compatible approach for in situ and non-destructive OAM processing. The proposed design offers a promising solution for the on-demand tailoring of working bands in liquid crystal planar optics and can promote advancements in massive information transmission and large-capacity data processing.
Simulation of electric-optical properties of homotropic aligned liquid crystal light valves (LCLV)

Abstract:The electro-optic performance as a function of light-valve parameters and operating conditions was numerically simulated based on a 4×4 matrix formalism. The effects of liquid crystal thickness, incident angle and pretilt angle on the LCLV performance were discussed. The director configuration and electrooptic performance of a homotropic aligned LCLV as the function of light valve parameters and operating conditions were calculated based on Oseen and Frank's continuum theory of nematic liquid crystal and generalized torque balance equation at the interfaces. On these bases, the effects of anchoring strength of nematic liquid crystal (NLC)-wall and pretilt angle on the director configuration and then on the electro-optic performance of LCLV were discussed.
