Abstract:A generalized contour-sum method has been proposed to measure the topological charge (TC) of an optical vortex (OV) beam using a Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor (SH-WFS). Moreover, a recent study extended it to be workable for measuring an aberrated OV beam. However, when the OV beam suffers from severe distortion, the closed path for circulation calculation becomes crucial. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of five closed path determination methods, including watershed transformation, maximum average-intensity circle extraction, a combination of watershed transformation and maximum average-intensity circle extraction, and perfectly round circles assignation. In the experiments, we used a phase-only spatial light modulator to generate OV beams and aberrations, while an SH-WFS was used to measure the intensity profile and phase slopes. The results show that when determining the TC values of distorted donut-shaped OV beams, the watershed-transformed maximum average-intensity circle method performed the best, and the maximum average-intensity circle method and the watershed transformation method came second and third, while the worst was the perfect circles assignation method. The discussions that explain our experimental results are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, an ultra-low profile anisotropic holographic metasurface is proposed to generate a linearly polarized high-order Bessel vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum with predesigned topological charge. Based on the leaky-wave theory and optical holographic principle, the anisotropic impedance pattern can be properly mapped by shaping the quasi-periodic metasurface with different meta-atom sizes. Compared with the prevalent spatial wave-modulated metasurface, this surface wave-modulated holographic metasurface effectively transforms a reference wave excited by a feeding source in a single point at the center of the antenna to a leaky high-order Bessel vortex beam without any extra air feeding, which enables a unique characteristic of error-free alignment between the air feeding and designed metasurface. The good agreement between the numerical simulation and the measured result demonstrates that the proposed approach can be employed to launch a linearly polarized high-order Bessel vortex beam with an arbitrary topological mode of interest. Abstract:High data rate of inter-satellite optical communication systems should be matched by high performance of beam orienting. A novel beam orienting mechanism utilizing no CCD or quadrant detectors is presented. High-precision and extreme-sensitivity beam orienting can be achieved by the application of beam nutating and coherent detecting technologies. Mathematical and computer simulation model of the entire orienting system is developed. The computer simulation results show that high beam orienting precision provided low laser phase noises are maintained. Preliminary experiments have verified the feasibility of using this technology for beam orienting.

Abstract:The topological charge of an electromagnetic vortex beam depends on its wavefront helicity. For mixed vortex beams composed of several different coaxial vortices, it is significant to investigate the local topological charges. Fourier transform based methods are restrained by the uncertainty principle and cannot achieve high angular resolution and mode resolution simultaneously. In this paper, an analysis method for local topological charges of vortex beams is presented based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). From EMD, the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can be obtained to construct the bases of the electromagnetic wave, and each local topological charge can be respectively defined. With this method the local value achieves high resolution of both azimuth angle and topological charge, meanwhile the amplitudes of each orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes are presented as well. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the EMD based method.

Abstract:In recent years, research on the interaction between Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) and matter has seen a continuous influx of investigations. OAM possesses distinct properties, such as additional degrees of freedom, vortex characteristics, and topological properties, which expand its applications in optical communication, optical sensing, and optical force. Through experiments involving the interaction of a chiral metal swastika structure with a SAM-OAM beam generated by a q-plate, we have observed a phenomenon does not present in pure SAM beams. Fourier back focal plane (FBP) imaging under SAM beam excitation easily identifies the chirality and geometric properties of the structure. When the SAM-OAM beam excites the structure, FBP not only identifies its chirality and geometric properties but also distinguishes different OAM topological charges and signs, as well as the degree of elliptic polarization. The stokes parametric FBP imaging reveals asymmetric polarization distribution resulting from the interaction between a vortex beam and the chiral structure. Moreover, it clearly reflects the conversion process of SAM to OAM. The experimental results align well with simulation results. These findings hold valuable insights for the advancement of optical information storage and communication using OAM, opening up new possibilities for further exploration in this field.

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) associated with structured singular beams carries vital information crucial for studying various properties and applications of light. Determining OAM through the interference of light is an efficient method. The interferogram serves as a valuable tool for analyzing the wavefront of structured beams, especially identifying the order of singularity. In this study, we propose a modified Mach–Zehnder interferometer architecture to effectively determine the topological charge of Bessel–Gaussian (BG) beams. Several numerically generated self-referenced interferograms have been used for analysis. Moreover, this study examines the propagation property and phase distribution within BG beams after they are obstructed by an aperture in the interferometer setup.

Abstract:Dynamic detection of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) properties of optical vortex (OV) beams has shown a wide range of applications in on-chip photonics, optical communication, and optical imaging. However, conventional detection technique suffers from issues of low efficiency, limited functionality, and low noise immunity. In this paper, a dislocated circular hole array is designed to generate ring-shaped surface plasmonic bending (R-SPB) beams. The propagation characteristics of R-SPB beams are numerically simulated using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. By analyzing the spot shape, size, and split-to-single spot conversion of the R-SPB beams, we are able to dynamically detect the topological charge values, polarization state (left circular polarization and right circular polarization), and positive or negative of the OV beam. We have successfully detected topological charges up to . These results demonstrate that an intuitive and convenient method for detecting the higher-order topological charges of OV beam is realized utilizing the R-SPB beam propagation properties. In addition, we found that changing the structural parameters only affects the electric field intensity distribution of the R-SPB but do not impact the detection results. These findings are useful for the development of on-chip OV beam topological charge detectors with multiplexed and highly integrated capabilities.

Abstract:Determining topological charge (TC) of optical vortex (OV) beams is important for many applications, such as optical measurement and information transmission through long-distance propagation. In this application, the OV beams usually have an annular intensity profile at the receiving end and are inevitably distorted by aberrations during propagation. In this paper, we propose a simple, direct, and aberration-resistible method to determine the TC value of this annular-shaped OV beam with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SH-WFS). Our approach involves finding a closed-path along the annular intensity distribution ridge, and then determining the TC value by a discrete circulation calculation with only the phase-slope vectors along the closed-path. Verification experiments were performed using a phase-only spatial light modulator to generate OV beams and aberrations, while SH-WFS to measure the intensity profile and phase-slopes. The results show that our method can determine the TC value of up to ± 20. The robustness against wavefront aberration and simulated atmospheric turbulence was evaluated. We also verified the proposed closed-path's superiority to other circular closed-paths for TC determination.

Abstract:Helico-conical vortex (HCV) beams are a kind of orbital angular momentum-carrying beam whose phase profile has a non-separable azimuthal and radial dependence. In this Letter, we introduce a lens phase into the helico-conical phase to measure the topological charge carried by the helico-conical beam. The focal-field intensity distributions of the beam obtained from the superimposition of the helico-conical phase and the lens phase are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The experimental findings are in good agreement with the simulation results. The results demonstrate that a certain number of elliptical dark regions are embedded in the intensity patterns and the number of dark regions is equal to the amount of topological charge carried by the HCV beam. Meanwhile, the tilt direction of the elliptical dark regions can determine the sign of the topological charges. This method will have potential applications in the field of light field modulation.

Abstract:For orbital angular momentum (OAM) based practical applications in radio frequency, inherent puzzles of traditional OAM carrying waves will be encountered inevitably, such as the inherent dark zone in the beam center and severe beam divergence. To solve the problem, some specific beams, which are directional beams with high gain, retaining the vorticity and orthogonality of conventional OAM carrying beams have been put forward. They are termed as composite-orbital angular momentum (c-OAM) beam for the first time in this paper. Continuous arc source model (CASM) and discrete arc source model (DASM) are proposed to generate c-OAM beams, which are composed of several OAM waves with different weights. Mathematical models of CASM and DASM are demonstrated, and the field expressions are derived. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the characteristics of the c-OAM beams, including directivity, vorticity, orthogonality, etc., and certify the validity of the proposed model. In all, CASM and DASM are capable of generating c-OAM beams, which are more suitable for OAM property based practical applications. Since beamforming is one of the key technologies in 5G systems, c-OAM beams are beneficial to be applied in current communication systems.

Abstract:The structured beams, which can manipulate arbitrary intensity and phase of electromagnetic rays, are significant in communication and sensing. The vortex electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wavefront, which can be viewed as a complete set of eigenmodes for electromagnetic waves. It provides a flexible beamforming method to achieve the azimuthal pattern diversity by the spatial superposition of multiple specific OAM modes. We have proposed a novel form of OAM wave with a two-dimensional structure called plane spiral OAM (PS-OAM), which is conducive to overlapping different modes. Based on this, the PS-OAM mode-group can be employed to modify the spatial beam structure and form structured electromagnetic beams. This kind of beam not only retains the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the OAM waves but also tackles the difficulties in applications stemming from the singularity-caused dark zone and beam divergence of conventional OAM waves. In this paper, the construction and manipulation of the structured beams are investigated, and the properties are analyzed. The potential applications in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, orthogonal multiplexing communication, and spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) communication are envisioned.

Abstract:We proposed a method to measure the topological charge of a vortex beam by using the self-rotating beam phase in this Letter. We investigated the far-field intensity patterns of the vortex beams passing through a phase hologram of the self-rotating beam with n = +2 theoretically and experimentally. The results demonstrate that the far-field intensity patterns cannot exhibit bright stripes when the topological charge of the vortex is positive (i.e., n ⋅ l > 0) and the calculated ratio relationship ξ can be used to identify the topological charge of the vortex beam. Differently, it can be found that the far-field intensity patterns exhibit several bright stripes when the topological charge of the vortex is negative (i.e., n ⋅ l < 0) and the number N of the bright stripes is equal to |l|−1(l represents the topological charge of the vortex beam). The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical ones. This method may inspire further research in the field of self-rotating beams.

Abstract:A new form of plane spiral orbital angular momentum (PS-OAM) carrying wave with the spiral harmonics of exp(-jl phi) as a complete set of eigenmodes is proposed to realize beam steering. Such a wave possesses the fundamental characteristics of an OAM-carrying wave, i.e., a spiral phase distribution, yet propagates along transverse directions. Hence, it owes unique advantages for use in realizing desired radiation beams, while avoids the puzzles encountered by traditional OAM-carrying beams. Various OAM mode grouping using the superposition of PS-OAM waves are demonstrated here via theoretical calculations as well as experimental verifications. The generation methods for PS-OAM waves are also proposed and experimentally validated to authenticate the feasibility. Both the calculated and experimental results show that the PS-OAM grouping is capable of providing a practical realization of eigenmode beamforming.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-group beamforming system based on an integrated optical true time delay line (OTTDL) chip is presented in this paper. Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) can be realized by this system. This system operating at 10.2 GHz can achieve no-distortion beam scanning, and three directions (0°, ±90°) are shown in the paper. Besides, the speed of beam scanning is measured as 1.2 kHz.

Abstract:Determination of the topological charge (TC) of a vortex beam is of significant importance in various applications such as high-capacity optical communications and micromanipulations. Though many kinds of methods, until now, have been proposed to measure the TC, most of them will fail if the measured vortex beam is partially blocked by an opaque obstacle. In this Letter, we have introduced an efficient method to determine the TC of an incomplete vortex beam (partially blocked by an obstacle) using its reconstructed phase distribution under propagation. The numerical and experimental results showed that the sign and magnitude of the TC can be simultaneously determined by counting the number of phase singularities and the directions of the phase variations around the singularities occurring in the reconstructed phase pattern, respectively. Our method works even when half of the vortex beam is blocked.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams with topological charge ℓ are commonly generated and detected by modulating an incoming field with an azimuthal phase profile of the form exp(iℓϕ) by a variety of approaches. This results in unwanted radial modes and reduced power in the desired OAM mode. Here, we show how to enhance the modal purity in the creation and detection of classical OAM beams and in the quantum detection of OAM photons. Classically, we combine holographic and metasurface control to produce high purity OAM modes and show how to detect them with high efficiency, extending the demonstration to the quantum realm with spatial light modulators. We demonstrate ultra-high purity OAM modes in orders as high as ℓ = 100 and a doubling of dimensionality in the quantum OAM spectrum from a spontaneous parametric downconversion source. Our work offers a simple route to increase the channel capacity in classical and quantum communication using OAM modes as a basis.

Abstract:Beams carrying orbital angular momentum possess a significant potential for modern optical technologies ranging from classical and quantum communication to optical manipulation. In this paper, we theoretically design and experimentally demonstrate an ultracompact array of elliptical nanoholes, which could convert the circularly polarized light into the cross-polarized vortex beam. To measure the topological charges of orbital angular momentum in a simple manner, another elliptical nanoholes array is designed to generate reference beam as a reference light. This approach may provide a new way for the generation and detection of orbital angular momentum in a compact device.
