Abstract:Vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) shows promising potential in enlarging communication capacity and improving modulation ability for its mode orthogonality. Although various OAM multiplexing schemes have been proposed to boost channel capacity density, few studies have focused on OAM shift keying (OAM-SK) communication because of the lack of rapid and low-latency mode demodulation technologies. In this study, we propose a neural-network-assisted coherent nanophotonic circuit (CNC) strategy for demodulating OAM modes and investigate its application in OAM-SK communication. The CNC comprises 380 Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) and achieves a unitary matrix transformation by simultaneously modulating the amplitude and phase of optical pulses via multi-light interference, where a neural network-assisted design algorithm is used to obtain the phase parameters in the CNC that satisfy the mapping relationship between feature information and OAM modes. Since the satisfied mapping relationship is performed in the optical domain, OAM modes can be demodulated at the speed of light. We show that this CNC can effectively identify the OAM modes ranging from -10 to +10, and the identification accuracy exceeds 90% under moderate turbulence intensity. As a proof of concept, we simulated a hexadecimal OAM-SK communication link, and the OAM signals under turbulent perturbations were successfully demodulated with an accuracy of 99.33%.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) detection approach at microwave band is proposed. A transmittance function is exploited to model a transmissive metasurface. Then the metasurface is designed to convert an OAM wave to multiple waves, only one of which is gaussian. The radiation direction of the gaussian wave is distinguishable according to the order of incident OAM. Consequently, by locating the gaussian wave, the incident OAM can be conveniently determined. We use a simple field source to simulate the incident OAM wave in fullwave simulation. It largely simplifies the simulation process when an incident wave carrying OAM is needed. Both numerical and full-wave simulation results are provided to validate our design and they show a good agreement with each other. Then, the metasurface is optimized for high directivity. Our work can provide an efficient and effective way for OAM detection in radio communications.

Abstract:Thanks to the unlimited orthogonal states, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) light is widely accepted as a promising carrier for high information multiplexing in optical communications, in which the OAM detection is an important issue. To keep up with the ever-growing demand for compact integration, here, a plasmonic grating is employed to spatially couple the OAM modes into two separated propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) beams with different splitting angles. These splitting angles are found to strongly rely on the topological charges of the incident beams and are insensitive to the specific location of the OAM beam illumination, which provides an intuitive detection of the OAM modes without particular alignment. Besides, a further unidirectional SPP launching from the OAM beam is also achieved by a particular composite grating. With such composite grating, both the topological charge value and sign of OAM beam in a single measurement can be detected. Our results provide a convenient method for alignment-free OAM detection by a compact device, and would inspire more multiplexing applications in nanophotonics.

Abstract:The wavefront control of spin or orbital angular momentum (OAM) is widely applied in the optical and radio fields. However, most passive metasurfaces provide limited manipulations, such as the spin-locked wavefront, a static OAM combination, or an uncontrollable OAM energy distribution. We propose a reflection-type multi-feed metasurface to independently generate multi-mode OAM beams with dynamically switchable OAM combinations and spin states, while simultaneously, the energy distribution of carrying OAM modes is controllable. Specifically, four elements are proposed to overcome the spin-locked phase limitation by combining propagation and geometric phases. The robustness of these elements is analyzed. By involving the amplitude term and multi-feed technology in the design process, the proposed metasurface can generate OAM beams with a controllable energy distribution over modes and switchable mode combinations. OAM-based radio communication with four independent channels is experimentally demonstrated at 14 GHz by employing a pair of the proposed metasurfaces. The powers of different channels are adjustable by the provided amplitude term, and the maximum crosstalk is −9 dB, proving the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-group beamforming system based on an integrated optical true time delay line (OTTDL) chip is presented in this paper. Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) can be realized by this system. This system operating at 10.2 GHz can achieve no-distortion beam scanning, and three directions (0°, ±90°) are shown in the paper. Besides, the speed of beam scanning is measured as 1.2 kHz.

Abstract:A reconfigurable orbital angular momentum (OAM) antenna is studied based on PIN diode loaded multi-layer phase modulation structure. The PIN diodes on each layer are controlled on and off by changing their bias voltages, thus the phase range of the multi-layer antenna unit can cover 0-2. Considering the phase superposition of the OAM carrying beam and lens's beam converging, different OAM generation together with beam focusing can be designed by tuning the number of conductive PIN diodes of each layer. The reconfigurable OAM antenna with modes of +/- 1, +/- 2, +/- 3 and +/- 4 is investigated via theoretical analysis as well as software simulation. The simulation results show that a single OAM state can be generated at a given time and eight OAM beams are switchable at 10GHz by changing the bias voltage of each diode. The authors' work may give a new sight for the reconfigurable OAM antenna design and will widen the applications of the OAM-based electromagnetic sensing.

Abstract:Beams carried orbital angular momentum (OAM) are proposed for wireless optical interconnects on chip and a full scheme of encoding and decoding of OAM at single frequency is demonstrated with numerical simulation. With proposed structure, beams with OAM order of -3 to 4 are generated and four orders of them (0 to 3) are used to encode and decode data so that the increased data density of two folds is achieved. According to such results, we believe that if OAM is utilized as an additional dimension in wireless optical interconnects, the data density can be significantly increased since the adopted orders of OAM could be infinite in principle. Moreover, such improvement could be easily applied to the existing architecture without any more complex technology.

Abstract:Dynamic detection of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) properties of optical vortex (OV) beams has shown a wide range of applications in on-chip photonics, optical communication, and optical imaging. However, conventional detection technique suffers from issues of low efficiency, limited functionality, and low noise immunity. In this paper, a dislocated circular hole array is designed to generate ring-shaped surface plasmonic bending (R-SPB) beams. The propagation characteristics of R-SPB beams are numerically simulated using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. By analyzing the spot shape, size, and split-to-single spot conversion of the R-SPB beams, we are able to dynamically detect the topological charge values, polarization state (left circular polarization and right circular polarization), and positive or negative of the OV beam. We have successfully detected topological charges up to . These results demonstrate that an intuitive and convenient method for detecting the higher-order topological charges of OV beam is realized utilizing the R-SPB beam propagation properties. In addition, we found that changing the structural parameters only affects the electric field intensity distribution of the R-SPB but do not impact the detection results. These findings are useful for the development of on-chip OV beam topological charge detectors with multiplexed and highly integrated capabilities.

Theoretical Analysis on Generating Composite-Orbital Angular Momentum Beam

Abstract:For orbital angular momentum (OAM) based practical applications in radio frequency, inherent puzzles of traditional OAM carrying waves will be encountered inevitably, such as the inherent dark zone in the beam center and severe beam divergence. To solve the problem, some specific beams, which are directional beams with high gain, retaining the vorticity and orthogonality of conventional OAM carrying beams have been put forward. They are termed as composite-orbital angular momentum (c-OAM) beam for the first time in this paper. Continuous arc source model (CASM) and discrete arc source model (DASM) are proposed to generate c-OAM beams, which are composed of several OAM waves with different weights. Mathematical models of CASM and DASM are demonstrated, and the field expressions are derived. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the characteristics of the c-OAM beams, including directivity, vorticity, orthogonality, etc., and certify the validity of the proposed model. In all, CASM and DASM are capable of generating c-OAM beams, which are more suitable for OAM property based practical applications. Since beamforming is one of the key technologies in 5G systems, c-OAM beams are beneficial to be applied in current communication systems.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are of great importance in modern wireless communications due to their attractive properties of self-reconstruction and multiplexing multiple beams. However, they are hardly deployed in a real-world scenario since they cannot be dynamically generated in a real-time and low-cost way, especially for the case of topological charges more than 2. To resolve this issue, we explore an inexpensive 2-bit programmable coding metasurface working at around 3.2 GHz along with an efficient optimization algorithm for the generation of high-order OAM-carrying beams in a reprogrammable way. Based on the designed metasurface, we can generate OAM EM beams with the electronically controlled vortex centers and topological charges of ${l}=0$ , ±1, ±2, ±3, ±4, ±5, and ±6, which have been experimentally verified. As an illustrative example, we demonstrate an interesting application of the designed 2-bit programmable metasurface in direct-modulation line-of-sight wireless communications. We believe that the developed strategy will bring a fundamentally new perspective on the design of wireless communication architectures at various frequencies.

Abstract:To accurately unwrap the high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) for multiplexed vortex beams is a challenge. In this work, over ±160 order OAM topological charges have been unwrapped in multiplexed optical links. Optical imaging based discrepancy identification enables the multiplexed OAM modes separating in physics, and the intelligent pattern recognition further promotes its unwrapping in numerical domain. Particularly, the combination of annular phase grating and auxiliary beams features compound spiral stripes, which paves the way for optical intensity recognition with low-complexity and high-commonality. Moreover, the spiral direction characterizes the symbol of the OAM states, which dramatically broadens the amount of multiplexed links. Here, optical separating means assisted by intelligent pattern recognition opens up a new route to high-speed and large-capacity optical communication, which may shed new light on 6G application.

Abstract:The structured beams, which can manipulate arbitrary intensity and phase of electromagnetic rays, are significant in communication and sensing. The vortex electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wavefront, which can be viewed as a complete set of eigenmodes for electromagnetic waves. It provides a flexible beamforming method to achieve the azimuthal pattern diversity by the spatial superposition of multiple specific OAM modes. We have proposed a novel form of OAM wave with a two-dimensional structure called plane spiral OAM (PS-OAM), which is conducive to overlapping different modes. Based on this, the PS-OAM mode-group can be employed to modify the spatial beam structure and form structured electromagnetic beams. This kind of beam not only retains the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the OAM waves but also tackles the difficulties in applications stemming from the singularity-caused dark zone and beam divergence of conventional OAM waves. In this paper, the construction and manipulation of the structured beams are investigated, and the properties are analyzed. The potential applications in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, orthogonal multiplexing communication, and spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) communication are envisioned.

Abstract:Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is the intrinsic property of electromagnetic waves. Similar to the spectrum spread in the frequency domain, the OAM spread can be constructed in the OAM domain. In the Uniform Circular Array (UCA) scheme of OAM, the OAM spread turns out to be an efficient way of beam-forming to the propagation direction. In this paper, the system architecture of OAM spread transmission is highlighted with the Carrier Interferometry (CI) codes. Besides, the Multi-Loop UCA scheme combined with CI codes to generate multiple OAM modes is analyzed and evaluated. The simulation results show that the more OAM modes are multiplexed, the smaller the beam angle for beamforming. Correspondingly, the adjacent channel interference at the receiving end is smaller. In addition, the combination of OAM and Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) with UCA scheme is expected to be applied in 6G.

Abstract:The local angular momentum (AM) properties of arbitrary polarised orbital AM (OAM) beams become important when the radio OAM properties are used for remote sensing. In this study, based on the decomposition of ϕ-directional Poynting vector, the local AM mode is decomposed into a local OAM mode, a local spin AM (SAM) mode, and a new component named local coupling AM mode (CAM), which is related to the ϕ-directional coupling Poynting vector and dependent on the polarisation state of the OAM beams. The summation of the local OAM mode and the local SAM mode is found to be equal to the local topological charge which is physically related to the flow of the local azimuthal linear momentum density. The above conclusions are theoretically analysed and simulation verified by the different polarised OAM beams generated by different directional circular antenna arrays.

Abstract:The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is expected to be a key enabler for future wireless systems, as it can control the propagation environment and overcome the harmful effects of the wireless channel. In this paper, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam generated by a holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is employed to utilize the OAM mode orthogonality and improve the capacity performance of the line-of-sight base station-RIS channel. The pre-transmitting and pre-receiving matrices are designed to guarantee the coaxial requirement of OAM transmission. Multiple beams are generated towards different reflecting RISs, and various pre-receiving matrices are deployed to adapt to varying movements and rotation conditions, ensuring spatial multiplexing gain and transmission robustness. Moreover, the RIS-user equipment (UE) phase shift matrix of the reflecting RIS is designed for both far-field and near-field UEs with different wavefront. Simulation results are provided to validate the pre-transmitting, pre-receiving matrix designs and the orthogonality of OAM beams with distinct modes, as well as demonstrate the capacity improvement of the proposed OAM beam-empowered multi-RIS transmission.

Abstract:Communications using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of radio waves have attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, a novel millimeter-wave dual OAM mode antenna is cleverly designed, using which a 60 GHz wireless communication link with two separate OAM channels is experimentally demonstrated. The main body of the dual OAM antenna is a traveling-wave ring resonator using two feeding ports fed by a 90° hybrid coupler. A parabolic reflector is used to focus the beams. All the antenna components are fabricated by 3D printing technique and the electro-less copper plating surface treatment process. The performances of the antenna, such as S-parameters, near-fields, directivity, and isolation between the two OAM modes are measured. Experimental results show that this antenna can radiate two coaxially propagating OAM modes beams simultaneously. The multiplexing and de-multiplexing are easily realized in the antennas themselves. The two OAM mode channels have good isolation of more than 20 dB, thus ensuring the reliable transmission links at the same time.

Abstract:The Orbital-Angular-Momentum (OAM)-carrying radio waves may provide extra rotational degree of freedom, which may potentially increase channel capacity and spectrum efficiency for future wireless communications. It has been demonstrated that circular antenna array could radiate OAM-carrying radio beam by feeding each element with certain phase offset. In this paper, by proper analyses and extensive simulations on the spatial amplitude and phase characteristics of the radiated electromagnetic field under three different array configurations, i.e., radial array, tangential array, and uniform circular array (UCA), respectively. We found that among the above settings UCA is the best way to generate the desired OAM-carrying beam with linear excitation. We then use multiple concentric antenna rings with elements of half-wave dipoles to generate and demultiplex multiple OAM states, and both spectral analyses and simulations verified the feasibility.
