Abstract:The design of nanostructures with sufficient active sites is considerably challenging but highly desirable for energy applications. Herein, highly active tubular MoS2 structures on flexible three-dimensional graphene foam are firstly produced by a bottom-up approach using Ni3S2 nanowires as the precursor and self-sacrificial template. The hierarchical tubular structures with high surface curvature expose a large fraction of edge sites and defects, which, along with high surface area, lead to excellent activity for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Remarkably, the integrated hydrogen-evolving electrode operating in acidic electrolytes exhibits high stability and excellent electrocatalytic activity with a low onset overpotential of 77 mV, Tafel slope of 52 mV per decade and large exchange current density of 6.4 x 10(-2) mA cm(-2). When evaluated as an anode material for LIBs, these hierarchical MoS2 nanotubes manifest high specific capacity and excellent rate capability as well as extremely long-term cycle stability. This work elucidates how structure design of nanomaterials can significantly impact the surface structure at the atomic scale, enabling new opportunities for enhancing structure properties and other important technological applications.
Assembled Graphene Nanotubes Decorated by Hierarchical MoS2 Structures: Enhanced Lithium Storage and in Situ TEM Lithiation Study

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. Abstract:An ingenious design and a controllable architecture are critical for the construction of flexible electrodes. In this study, we realized the enriched nanorods on carbon cloth as templates by controlling the growth of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and finally formed hollow CoS2@MoS2 nanotube arrays after postprocessing. The outer layer is staggered interconnected MoS2 nanosheets with gaps between them, providing rich active points for electrochemical reaction. The hierarchical tubular structure and core–shell system significantly improves the electrical conductivity, promotes the diffusion of lithium ions, and has a good buffering effect on the volume change. Therefore, it exhibits an excellent lithium storage capacity with an areal specific capacity as high as 2.35 mAh cm–2 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.5 mA cm–2. Furthermore, it reaches 1.55 mAh cm–2 in the full-cell test at 5 mA cm–2. At the same time, its strong flexibility enables stable capacity output in pouch cells. In this regard, our research provides an idea for the application of flexible devices.

Abstract:The layered materials have demonstrated great prospects as cost-effective substitutes for precious electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction. Research efforts have been devoted to synthesizing highly conductive MoS2 with the substantial cardinal plane and edge active sites. Here, we successfully synthesized a hierarchical 1T/2H-MoS2 with sodium ion insertion via a facile hydrothermal method. The contents of the 1T-phase can be flexibly controlled by different hydrothermal temperatures (160 oC ∼ 200 oC). And the modified uniformly dispersed 1T/2H-MoS2 nanospheres with different d spacings were designed to enhance the electrocatalytic efficiency by adding SiO2 and through the ion exchange process of NaOH and HF solution. The as-synthesized Na+ intercalated 1T-MoS2 nanosphere with an expanded interlayer of 0.95 nm obtained at 160 oC exhibits a prominent electrocatalytic performance of hydrogen evolution reaction with a comparable overpotential of 255 mV and a remarkably small Tafel slope of 44 mV/decade. Therefore, this study provides a facile and controllable strategy to yield interlayer-expanded 1T-MoS2 nanospheres, making it a potentially competitive hydrogen evolution catalyst for the hydrogen cell.

Abstract:Hierarchical MoS2xSe2(1-x) nanotubes assembled from several-layered nanosheets featuring tunable chalcogen compositions, expanded interlayer spacing and carbon modification, are synthesized for enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The chalcogen compositions of the MoS2xSe2(1-x) nanotubes are controllable by adjusting the selenization temperature and duration while the expanded (002) interlayer spacing varies from 0.98 to 0.68 nm. It is found that the MoS2xSe2(1-x) (x = 0.54) nanotubes with expanded interlayer spacing of 0.98 nm exhibit the highest electrocatalytic HER activity with a low onset potential of 101 mV and a Tafel slope of 55 mV dec(-1). The improved electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the chalcogen composition tuning and the interlayer distance expansion to achieve benefitting hydrogen adsorption energy. The present work suggests a potential way to design advanced HER electrocatalysts through modulating their compositions and interlayer distances.

Abstract:Constructing 3D hierarchical architecture consisting of 2D hybrid nanosheets is very critical to achieve uppermost and stable electrochemical performance for both lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a simple synthesis of uniform 3D microspheres assembled from carbon nanosheets with the incorporated MoO 2 nanoclusters is demonstrated. The MoO 2 nanoclusters can be readily converted into the molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) nanocrystals by using high temperature treatment. Such assembling architecture is highly particular for preventing Mo‐based ultrasmall nanoparticles from coalescing or oxidizing and endowing them with rapid electron transfer. Consequently, the MoO 2 /C hybrids as LIB anode materials deliver a specific capacity of 625 mA h g −1 at 1600 mA g −1 even after 1000 cycles, which is among the best reported values for MoO 2 ‐based electrode materials. Moreover, the Mo 2 C/C hybrids also exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with small overpotential and robust durability in both acid and alkaline media. The present work highlights the importance of designing 3D structure and controlling ultrasmall Mo‐based nanoparticles for enhancing electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract:Constructing hybrid heterostructures of transition-metal dichalcogenides is an effective strategy to enhance their electrochemical performance and stability as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a facile in situ strategy was developed to engineer lattice-mismatched MoS2–ZnS together with C into hierarchical nanostructures. The three-dimensional architecture was constructed using few-layer MoS2 nanosheets as the building block, and ZnS and C coexisted among the MoS2 nanosheets with a mesoporous structure. By the synergy effect of integrated interfaces and hierarchical configuration, as-formed heterostructures exhibit increased conductivity, enhanced e–/Li+ transfer efficiency, and retarded volume expansion during the electrochemical process. All of these contribute to the greatly increased lithium storage capability and well-preserved stability. Impressively, as-obtained materials exhibit a high lithium storage capacity of 961.9 mA g–1 at 100 mA g–1 after 100 cycles (about 3.1 times higher than pristine MoS2 after 35 cycles), good rate retention, and superior cycling stability with 9.5% decay. Abstract:The layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanostructured materials are of great interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion and electrocatalytic water splitting. However, they still exhibit very limited performance because of their limited active sites. To create more efficient MoS2 materials, herein, we develop a simple yet efficient approach to a unique column-like MoS2 superstructure composed of edge-terminated MoS2 nanosheets (CLET MoS2). These MoS2 nanosheets as building blocks with fully exposed active edges are oriented in a preferred manner, rendering CLET MoS2 that exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in both lithium ion storage and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with that of commercial MoS2, these hierarchical MoS2 superstructures possess much higher specific capacity and superior cycling performance for lithium ion storage and excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability for HER with a very low Tafel slope of 39 mV decade(-1), showing their great potential applications in lithium ion batteries and water splitting.
A Universal Strategy for Intimately Coupled Carbon Nanosheets/MoM Nanocrystals (M = P, S, C, and O) Hierarchical Hollow Nanospheres for Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis and Sodium-Ion Storage.

Abstract:Intimately coupled carbon/transition-metal-based hierarchical nanostructures are one of most interesting electrode materials for boosting energy conversion and storage applications owing to the strong synergistic effect between the two components and appealing structural stability. Herein, a universal method is reported for making hierarchical hollow carbon nanospheres (HCSs) with intimately coupled ultrathin carbon nanosheets and Mo-based nanocrystals. The in situ and confined reaction of the synthetic strategy can not only allow the aggregation of the nanocrystals to be impeded, but also endows extremely intimate coupled interaction between the conductive carbon nanosheets and the nanocrystals MoM (M = P, S, C and O). As a proof of concept, the as-prepared MoP/C HCSs exhibit extraordinary hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalytic activity with small overpotential and robust durability in both acidic and alkaline solutions. In addition, the unique sheet-on-sheet MoS2 /C HCSs as an anode demonstrate high capacity, great rate capabilities, and long-term cycles for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The capacity can be maintained at 410 mA h g-1 even after 1000 cycles even at a high current density of 4 A g-1 , one of the best reported values for MoS2 -based electrode materials for SIBs. The present work highlights the importance of designing and fabricating functional strongly coupled hybrid materials for enhancing energy conversion and storage applications.
Double Confined MoO 2 /Sn/NC@NC Nanotubes: Solid–Liquid Synthesis, Conformal Transformation, and Excellent Lithium-Ion Storage

Abstract:The rational design of a hollow heterostructure promotes the development of highly durable anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, carbon-confined MoO2/Sn/ heterostructured nanotubes evolving from MoO3 nanorods have been successfully synthesized for the first time. In the growth of the Mo/Sn precursor, a peculiar microstructure evolution occurs from solid rods to hollow tubes through a solid–liquid reaction. The MoO2/Sn composite is restricted within the double carbon layer after subsequent annealing and carbonization that distinctly inherits the morphology of the Mo/Sn precursor. The resulting electrode shows good capacities with hardly any attenuation (925.4 mA h g–1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g–1) and excellent long cycle life (620.1 mA h g–1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g–1). The MoO2/Sn/ nanotubes contain the synergistic effect, elaborate core–shell structure, large specific surface areas, and abundant voids. These superiorities not only provide beneficial channels for the electrolyte to fully come into contact with electrode materials and more active sites for redox reactions but also effectively alleviate the volume fluctuation and sustain the electrical connectivity to retain a stable solid–electrolyte interface layer, indeed, bringing about the prominent Li-storage performance. Abstract:A sacrifice-template strategy combined with carbonization treatment was rationally designed to fabricate tubular-like carbon nanotubes coupled with ultrasmall Mo-W bimetallic carbides for boosting electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and lithium ions storage. Specifically, metal chelating coordination reaction and the dissolution of template undergo simultaneously under weak alkaline condition, thus leading to the formation of the hollow Mo-W-polydopamine (MoW-PDA) hybrid nanotubes. After carbonization, ultrasmall Mo-W bimetallic carbides embedded in the heteroatom (N, P)-codoped carbon nanotubes (MoxW2-xC/N, P-codoped CNTs) endow to prevent the aggregation between nanoparticles and provide more active sites. As a proof of concept, MoxW2-xC/N, P-codoped CNTs exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction with a low overpotential and steady durability in acidic and alkaline solutions. Moreover, MoxW2-xC/N, P-codoped CNTs displayed extraordinary lithium storage performance, which delivered decent reversible capacities of 560.9 mAh g-1 and 366.6 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 and 5.0 A g-1 after 1000 cycles, respectively, one of best performances for metal carbide-based anode. This work highlights a novel strategy to fabricate bifunctional carbides toward efficient electrocatalytic reaction and lithium ions storage.

Abstract:The synthesis of new nanohybrid catalysts with a tunable structure and the exploration of their synergistic behaviors have captured substantial attention. In this work, amorphous molybdenum disulfide/single-walled carbon nanotubes (MoS2/SWNTs) composites are synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process with the assistance of l-cysteine. We varied the mass ratio of sodium molybdate (the insitu Mo source) to SWNTs, this method provides a well-defined pathway to enable the morphological control over the evolution of MoS2 from nanospheres to nanofilaments, nanorods, and nanosheets. Among the as-obtained samples, the MoS2/SWNTs (1:1) hybrids, which displayed a 3D architecture that consisted of nanorods, exhibited the highest activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with pure MoS2, the MoS2 nanosheets that decorate the SWNTs have more highly exposed active edges, and the SWNTs in the center of the MoS2/SWNTs nanorods can enhance the conductivity. We regulated the ratio between MoS2 and SWNTs to obtain a balance between the number of active sites and the conductivity of MoS2/SWNTs. Here, MoS2/SWNTs nanorods exhibited a low overpotential of 195mV at 20mAcm(-2) and a low Tafel slope of 41mVdec(-1) for MoS2-based HER catalysts.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile method for the synthesis of MoS2 nanosheet/ MoS2 nanowire homostructures by growing MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of MoS2 nanowires. Benefiting from the uniform coating of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of MoS2 nanowires, the MoS2 nanosheet/ MoS2 nanowire homostructures highly expose their electrocatalytic active edge sites and exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. It demonstrates a low overpotential of 107 mV at 10 mA/cm(2) and a small Tafel slope of 64 mV/dec in 0.5 M H2SO4. This work provides an inspiration for the design of efficient electrocatalysts with no stacking and aggregation structure.
Stable Li+/Na+ Batteries with Anodes Boosted by Hollow Tubular-Structured MoS2 Nanosheet/N-Doped Carbon Nanosheet Composites

Abstract:Engineering a hollow architecture has been regarded as an efficient strategy for boosting energy storage and conversion. Herein, hollow hierarchical carbon nanotubes coupled with MoS2 nanosheets were successfully designed and fabricated to construct high-performance lithium-/sodium-ion batteries. A tubular Mo-polydopamine hybrid precursor was formed by a simple metal chelation reaction and a self-template effect, and subsequently in situ converted into MoS2 nanosheets embedded into carbon nanotubes after heat treatment. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between strong coupling hierarchical carbon/MoS2 nanosheets and a tubular hollow structure, the as-prepared electrode exhibited an outstanding storage capacity and an ultrastable cycling stability for lithium-/ sodium-ion storage. Evaluated as an anode for a lithium-ion battery, it presented a high-rate capacity of 1228.2 mA h g(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1). As for a sodium-ion battery, a capacity of 210.1 mA h g(-1) can be maintained after 9000 cycles under a high current density of 8000 mA g(-1). The storage mechanism analysis indicated that the charge-discharge process was dominated by a pseudocapacitive behavior. The present work highlights the synthesis of electrode materials with a hierarchical hollow structure to boost the development of electrochemical energy storage.
