Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Monodisperse sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres are employed as both the template and carbon source to prepare MoS2 quasi-hollow microspheres-encapsulated porous carbon. The synthesis procedure involves the hydrothermal growth of MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets on the surface of SPS microspheres and subsequent annealing to remove SPS core. Incomplete decomposition of SPS during annealing due to the confining effect of MoS2 shells leaves residual porous carbon in the interior. When being evaluated as the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, the as-prepared C@MoS2 microspheres exhibit excellent cycling stability (95% of capacity retained after 100 cycles) and high rate behavior (560 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)).

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:Hierarchical C@MoS2 hollow spheres assembled from few layer-MoS2 nanosheets coated on both interior and exterior surfaces of hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) have been developed by a modified template method. The polydopamine-derived carbon shell functions as a support with a negatively charged surface resulting in the in situ growth of few layer-MoS2 nanosheets and prevents them from agglomeration with an integrated structure. In addition, the hollow carbon spheres with their mesopores provide sufficient liquid-solid contact area and shorter electron and ion pathways, as well as buffer for volume changes occurring during the charge/discharge process. The prepared C@MoS2 material is characterized by XRD, TGA, BET, Raman, SEM, HRTEM and XPS measurements. When applied as a negative electrode material in LIBs, the C@MoS2 electrode exhibits high reversible gravimetric capacity (1100 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C), superior rate performance (633 mAh·g−1 at 20.0 C) and superb cycling life (86.0% of its original specific capacity left after 130 cycles).

Abstract:Emerging sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have aroused great attention in large-scale energy storage. However, it is still a great challenge to develop suitable electrode materials due to the large radius of Na+. This work demonstrates a strategy to synthesize hierarchical tubular MoS2 via a facial hydrothermal method with the assistance of tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB). The results show that sufficient amounts of TMA+ ions are necessary to form the hierarchical tubular structures of MoS2. The obtained tubular MoS2 displays a high diffusion coefficient of Na+ ions, a high specific capacity of 652.5 mAh/g at the current density of 100 mA/g after 50 cycles, and a good cycling stability (94.2% of the initial capacity can be retained after 100 cycles at 1000 mA/g). In situ XRD during the discharge/charge process displays a reversible intercalation/deintercalation of Na+ into MoS2 layers followed by a conversion-type reaction. Systematic analyses reveal that the enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to its tubular hierarchical structures with the wall composed of loosely stacked nanosheets, which can provide nearly unobstructed ion transportation paths, sufficient active sites, and enough space to mitigate the effects of the volume change during the discharge/charge process. This synthetic approach can be easily extended to other metal oxides and metal sulfides with hierarchical structures for versatile applications.
3D Interconnected and Multiwalled Carbon@MoS 2 @Carbon Hollow Nanocables as Outstanding Anodes for Na-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:Currently, the specific capacity and cycling performance of various MoS2/carbon-based anode materials for Na-ion storage are far from satisfactory due to the insufficient structural stability of the electrode, incomplete protection of MoS2 by carbon, difficult access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, as well as inactivity of the adopted carbon matrix. To address these issues, this work presents the rational design and synthesis of 3D interconnected and hollow nanocables composed of multiwalled carbon@MoS2@carbon. In this architecture, (i) the 3D nanoweb-like structure brings about excellent mechanical property of the electrode, (ii) the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets are sandwiched between and doubly protected by two layers of porous carbon, (iii) the hollow structure of the primary nanofibers facilitates the access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, (iv) the porous and nitrogen-doping properties of the two carbon materials lead to synergistic Na-storage of carbon and MoS2. As a result, this hybrid material as the anode material of Na-ion battery exhibits fast chargetransfer reaction, high utilization efficiency, and ultrastability. Outstanding reversible capacity (1045 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate behavior (817 mAh g(-1) at 7000 mA g(-1)), and good cycling performance (747 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 700 mA g(-1)) are obtained.

Abstract:An ingenious design and a controllable architecture are critical for the construction of flexible electrodes. In this study, we realized the enriched nanorods on carbon cloth as templates by controlling the growth of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and finally formed hollow CoS2@MoS2 nanotube arrays after postprocessing. The outer layer is staggered interconnected MoS2 nanosheets with gaps between them, providing rich active points for electrochemical reaction. The hierarchical tubular structure and core–shell system significantly improves the electrical conductivity, promotes the diffusion of lithium ions, and has a good buffering effect on the volume change. Therefore, it exhibits an excellent lithium storage capacity with an areal specific capacity as high as 2.35 mAh cm–2 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.5 mA cm–2. Furthermore, it reaches 1.55 mAh cm–2 in the full-cell test at 5 mA cm–2. At the same time, its strong flexibility enables stable capacity output in pouch cells. In this regard, our research provides an idea for the application of flexible devices.

Abstract:It is crucial to design advanced electrodes with large Li/Na-ion storage capacities for the development of next-generation battery systems. Herein, hierarchical MoS2/C composite microspheres were constructed by facile template-free self-assembly sulfurization plus post-carbonization. Cross-linked MoS2 nanosheets and outer carbon layer are organically combined together to form composite microspheres with diameters of 400-500 nm. Due to enhanced electrical conductivity and good structural stability, the MoS2/C composite microspheres exhibit substantially improved Li/Na-ion storage performance. Compared to unmodified MoS2, MoS2/C composite microspheres deliver higher Li/Na-ion storage capacity (Li+: 1017 mA hg(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) and Na+: 531 mA hg(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)), as well as better rate capability (Li+: 434 mA hg(-1) at 1 Ag-1 and Na+: 102 mA hg(-1) at 1 Ag-1) and capacity retention (Li+: 902 mA hg(-1) after 200 cycles and Na+: 342 mA hg(-1) over 100 cycles). The superior Li/Na-ion storage performance is mainly attributed to the unique porous microsphere architecture with increased electrode/electrolyte interfaces and more diffusion paths for Li/Na ion insertion. Additionally, the carbon coating can not only improve the electronic conductivity, but also suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides.

A tubular Mo–polydopamine hybrid precursor was formed by a simple metal chelation reaction and a self-template effect, and subsequently in situ converted into MoS2 nanosheets embedded into carbon nanotubes after heat treatment. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between strong coupling hierarchical carbon/MoS2 nanosheets and a tubular hollow structure, the as-prepared electrode exhibited an outstanding storage capacity and an ultrastable cycling stability for lithium-/sodium-ion storage. Abstract:Hierarchical tubular structures constructed by ultrathin carbon-coated SnO(2) nanoplates are rationally designed and synthesized. This interesting structure simultaneously integrates the structural and compositional design rationales for high-energy anode materials based on low-dimensional ultrathin nanoplates, a hollow tubular structure, and a carbon nanocoating. When evaluated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized SnO(2)-carbon hybrid structure manifests high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability.
Double Confined MoO 2 /Sn/NC@NC Nanotubes: Solid–Liquid Synthesis, Conformal Transformation, and Excellent Lithium-Ion Storage

Abstract:The rational design of a hollow heterostructure promotes the development of highly durable anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, carbon-confined MoO2/Sn/ heterostructured nanotubes evolving from MoO3 nanorods have been successfully synthesized for the first time. In the growth of the Mo/Sn precursor, a peculiar microstructure evolution occurs from solid rods to hollow tubes through a solid–liquid reaction. The MoO2/Sn composite is restricted within the double carbon layer after subsequent annealing and carbonization that distinctly inherits the morphology of the Mo/Sn precursor. The resulting electrode shows good capacities with hardly any attenuation (925.4 mA h g–1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g–1) and excellent long cycle life (620.1 mA h g–1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g–1). The MoO2/Sn/ nanotubes contain the synergistic effect, elaborate core–shell structure, large specific surface areas, and abundant voids. These superiorities not only provide beneficial channels for the electrolyte to fully come into contact with electrode materials and more active sites for redox reactions but also effectively alleviate the volume fluctuation and sustain the electrical connectivity to retain a stable solid–electrolyte interface layer, indeed, bringing about the prominent Li-storage performance. Abstract:Hierarchical MoS2 microboxes constructed by ultrathin nanosheets are synthesized by a facile template-assisted strategy. The first step involves the L-cysteine assisted uniform growth of hierarchical MoS2 nanosheets on MnCO3 microcube templates which are at the same time converted to MnS. Hierarchical MoS2 microboxes can be obtained by selectively dissolving MnS through acid washing. When evaluated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the hierarchical MoS2 microboxes manifest high specific capacity and excellent cycling performance. The hierarchical MoS2 microboxes also show enhanced electrocatalytic activity for electrochemical hydrogen evolution from water.

Abstract:The design of nanostructures with sufficient active sites is considerably challenging but highly desirable for energy applications. Herein, highly active tubular MoS2 structures on flexible three-dimensional graphene foam are firstly produced by a bottom-up approach using Ni3S2 nanowires as the precursor and self-sacrificial template. The hierarchical tubular structures with high surface curvature expose a large fraction of edge sites and defects, which, along with high surface area, lead to excellent activity for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Remarkably, the integrated hydrogen-evolving electrode operating in acidic electrolytes exhibits high stability and excellent electrocatalytic activity with a low onset overpotential of 77 mV, Tafel slope of 52 mV per decade and large exchange current density of 6.4 x 10(-2) mA cm(-2). When evaluated as an anode material for LIBs, these hierarchical MoS2 nanotubes manifest high specific capacity and excellent rate capability as well as extremely long-term cycle stability. This work elucidates how structure design of nanomaterials can significantly impact the surface structure at the atomic scale, enabling new opportunities for enhancing structure properties and other important technological applications.

Abstract:In this work, a core-shell composite composed of MoS2 nanosheets grown on hollow carbon microspheres is synthesized by a hydrothermal and a subsequent annealing route. The result shows that well-graphitized hollow-carbon@highlycrystallineMoS2(HC@MoS2) was obtained after the four-step reaction. And it is found that the synthesized MoS2 is consist of 2H and 1T phases. The lithium storage property of the composite is investigated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Benefited from the special morphology and structure, a stable capacity of 970mAhg−1 for over 100 cycles at a current density of 0.25Ag−1 is realized on the material. Even at a high current density of 4Ag−1, a reversible capacity as high as 560mAhg−1 is delivered. Moreover, the reasons for the excellent electrochemical performance of the material are explored and discussed in detail.

Systematic analyses reveal that the enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to its tubular hierarchical structures with the wall composed of loosely stacked nanosheets, which can provide nearly unobstructed ion transportation paths, sufficient active sites, and enough space to mitigate the effects of the volume change during the discharge/charge process. Abstract:The hollow nanotubes constructed with highly conductive 1T MoS2 nanosheets and PPy nanotubes were fabricated. These hollow nanotubes show a huge lithium specific capacity of 755.5 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and sodium specific capacity of 503.3 mAh g‐1 after 200 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance due to the unique 1D and 2D composite structure and excellent conductive property. MoS2 is the most promising anode material for secondary battery with its unique 2D layered structure. However, the application of MoS2 is restricted by the poor electrical conductivity and sluggish ion diffusion. Herein, hollow nanotubes constructed with highly conductive 1T phase MoS2 nanosheets and polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes are fabricated and used as anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries and sodium‐ion batteries. Remarkably, these hollow nanotubes show a high lithium‐specific capacity of 755.5 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and excellent sodium‐specific capacity of 503.3 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the rational design of unique 1D and 2D composite structure. First, the highly conductive 1T phase MoS2 2D nanosheets and hollow 1D PPy nanotube can effectively promote the charge transfer kinetics. However, the increased interlayer spacing of 1T phase MoS2 rapidly improves the insertion/extraction process of metal ions, and the vertical growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of the PPy nanotubes also exposes more energy storage sites. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of MoS2‐based composite materials, and also proposes a reference for its application in the secondary battery.

Abstract:A hierarchical MoS2 architecture composed of nanosheet-assembled microspheres with an expanded interplanar spacing of the (002) planes was successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal reaction. Electron microscopy studies revealed formation of the MoS2 microspheres with an average diameter of 230 nm. It was shown that the hierarchical structure of MoS2 microspheres possesses both the merits of nanometer-sized building blocks and micrometer-sized assemblies, which offer high surface area for fast kinetics and buffers the volume expansion during lithium insertion/deinsertion, respectively. The micrometer-sized assemblies were found to contribute to the enhanced electrochemical stabilities of the electrode materials. The mentioned advantages of the MoS2 electrode prepared in this work allowed enhanced cyclability and high rate capability of the material. Along with this, the material delivered a high initial discharge capacity of 1206 mAh g−1 and a reversible discharge capacity of 653 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1. Furthermore, the material delivered a high reversible capacity of 480 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 1000 mA g−1.

Abstract:Advanced anode materials for lithium ion batteries are central to the area of electrical energy storage devices. Herein, we have developed a two-step strategy for synthesizing MoS2@polypyrrole (MoS2@PPY) core-shell microspheres. In such a novel architecture, the MoS2 microspheres are homogeneously wrapped by conductive polypyrrole coating forming core-shell microspheres. As a preliminary test, the obtained MoS2@PPY microspheres exhibit greatly enhanced electrochemical performances for lithium storage compared with un-modified MoS2 microspheres. The MoS2@PPY microsphere electrode displays a high specific capacity of 1012 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 200 mA g(-1) and high rate performance (600 mAh g(-1) at 4000 mA g(-1)). The superior electrochemical performances are attributed to the advantageous combination of hierarchical microsphere structure and conductive PPY coating. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:2D transition metal disulfides are one of the most preferred materials for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, complex processes and structural instability during cycling are challenges faced. Herein, the hierarchical composite nanotubes CeO2@C@MoS2 (MS/CNTs) are prepared by electrostatic spinning, followed by a simple carbon coating method. The as-prepared composite nanotubes with self-assembled layer structures are characterized by a more stable structure compared with traditional nanofibers due to the existence of a dense skeleton. As a result of the stable framework structure, MS/CNTs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in LIBs (1002 mA hg(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and 690 mA hg(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 500 cycles) and super-long cyclic stability and electrochemical performance (550 mA hg(-1) at 2 A g(-1) after 2400 cycles). MS/CNTs also show excellent storage performance in sodium batteries (440 mA hg(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 400 mA hg(-1) at 1 A g(-1)). The stability of MoS2 nanotubes is effectively improved by chemical and physical methods, mainly due to the support of the CeO2@C, metal-organic framework (MOF) tube skeleton, which avoids the shedding of nanotubes after cycling, maintaining a unique structural topography even after 500 cycles.
