Abstract:An ultra-compact polarization splitter-rotator with a discretized subwavelength nanostructure is demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The device has a length of only 7.92 μm. For TE0-TE0, a low insertion loss (<0.2 dB), low crosstalk (<-20 dB), and high extinction ratio (>40 dB) are achieved over a broad wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. For TM0-TE0, the insertion loss is lower than 1 dB over 40 nm bandwidth (1530-1570 nm). The crosstalk is lower than -25 dB, and the extinction ratio is larger than 20 dB, from 1500 nm to 1600 nm.

Abstract:A novel ultra-compact polarization rotator (PR) based on surface plasmon polaritons waveguide is proposed. The total footprint of the proposed device is only 0.44μm × 2.55μm. Simulations with 3D-FDTD show that the PR has a broad bandwidth (1.4μm~1.7μm) with extinction ratios larger than 10dB. The insertion losses are less than 1dB during the wavelength range of 1450nm~1650nm.

Abstract:Silicon photonics devices benefit greatly from a partially etched platform and inverse design. Herein, we propose a bi-layer polarization splitter and rotator with a topology pattern and demonstrate it on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Our device exhibits a significantly reduced physical footprint of only 2µm×6µm, compared to traditional directional couplers and tapered waveguides. The device accomplishes the functions of polarization conversion and separation in such a compact design without redundant tapered or bending waveguides. The tested minimum insertion loss with the fabrication batch reaches 0.57 and 0.67 dB for TE and TM modes, respectively. The TE mode demonstrates a wider bandwidth and lower ILs than the TM modes, averaging around 1 dB from 1530 to 1565 nm. The M modes exhibit approximately 2 dB ILs at the same wavelength range, decreasing to about 1 dB between 1565 and 1580 nm. Improved designs and fabrication conditions strongly suggest the potential for further performance enhancement in the device. This successful initiative validates the exceptional performance resulting from the integration of the partially etched platform and inverse design, providing valuable insights for future photonic integrated device designs.

Abstract:As many silicon nanophotonic devices are polarization-dependent, a polarization beam splitter that divides TE and TM modes is an essential component for photonic integrated circuits. Various structures have been proposed for polarization splitters, but it is still challenging to simultaneously achieve low insertion loss, high extinction ratio, compact size and simplicity of fabrication. In this paper, we combine new machine learning methods with the principle of multimode interference to propose a novel design for a polarization beam splitter. Our design has low insertion loss (-0.17dB/-0.42dB) and high extinction ratio (-23.1dB/-23.4dB) at the central wavelength of 1550nm for TE/TM modes, with compact size of 2×19μm2 and fabrication constraints strictly satisfied. Furthermore, our design is a standard 220nm-thick single-layer device for the silicon-on-insulator platform, without any auxiliary structures, making it easy for fabrication. Since our design cannot be optimized by the most commonly used methods, we adopt several specialized techniques to Bayesian optimization for inverse design. In this paper, we also share these skills which are simple but effective, possible to solve much more complicated design problems than others.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated high-performance 1550- and 1310-nm silicon polarization splitter-rotators (PSRs) with optimized tapers. Each PSR consists of a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based bi-level taper and shortcuts to an adiabaticity (STA)-based ridge-waveguide coupler. Ridge waveguides are introduced to increase the coupling coefficient of the STA-based coupler. The measured polarization conversion loss and polarization crosstalk are less than 0.74 and -20 dB, respectively, in the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm for the 1550-nm PSR, and less than 1 and -23 dB, respectively, in the wavelength range of 1260-1340 nm for the 1310-nm PSR. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultra-compact and highly efficient polarization splitter and rotator based on a silicon bent directional coupler structure. The TM-to-TE cross-polarization coupling occurs between the two parallel bent waveguides, if the phase matching condition is satisfied. Efficient polarization splitting and rotating are simultaneously achieved. The device is fabricated by a single step of exposure and etching. The measured peak TM-to-TE polarization conversion efficiency reaches 96.9%. The TM-to-TE conversion loss is lower than 1 dB in the wavelength range of 1544 nm–1585 nm, and the insertion loss for the TE polarization is lower than 0.3 dB in the wavelength regime of 1530 nm–1600 nm. The cross talk values are lower than −20 and −18 dB for the TE- and TM-polarizations over a wavelength range of 70 nm, respectively. The coupling length of the polarization splitter and rotator is 8.77μm. To the best of our knowledge, our device achieves the shortest coupling length.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:High-performance ultra-compact polarization splitter-rotators (PSRs) are designed and experimentally demonstrated, using dual etching and a tapered asymmetrical directional coupler. First, two novel PSRs are designed with nanowire and subwavelength grating cross-port waveguides and verified in simulations. Then, one of the two PSRs is fabricated. Experiment results reveal that the extinction ratio is higher than 28 dB or 32 dB at 1550 nm for the launched fundamental transverse magnetic or the transverse electric modes, while the corresponding insertion loss and polarization conversion loss are 0.33 dB and 0.18 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Polarization splitter-rotators (PSRs) are an essential component in on-chip polarization-sensitive and polarization-division multiplexing systems. In this work, we propose an ultracompact and high-performance silicon-based polarization splitter-rotator utilizing anisotropic metasurfaces, which is the first to combine the two, to our knowledge. The tilted periodic metasurface structure has different modulation effects on different polarized light fields, such as the transverse-electric (TE) mode and the transverse-magnetic (TM) mode, which are beneficial for designing polarization management devices. According to the results, the entire length of the silicon PSR was ~13.5 μm. The TE-to-TM conversion loss and polarization conversion ratio ere -0.154 dB and 96.5% at 1.55 μm, respectively. In the meanwhile, the cross talk and reflection loss were -27.0 dB and -37.3 dB, when the fundamental TE mode was input. The insertion loss and cross talk were -0.19 dB and -25.01 dB at the central wavelength when the fundamental TM mode was input. In addition, the bandwidth reached up to ~112 nm with polarization conversion loss and insertion loss higher than -0.46 dB and -0.36 dB. The simulations also show that the designed devices had good fabrication tolerance.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive mode-order converting power splitter using a pixelated region is presented and investigated in this paper. As TE0 and TM0 modes are injected into the input port, they are converted into TE1 and TM1 modes, which evenly come out from the two output ports. The finite-difference time-domain method and direct-binary-search optimization algorithm are utilized to optimize structural parameters of the pixelated region to attain small insertion loss, low crosstalk, wide bandwidth, excellent power uniformity, polarization-insensitive property, and compact size. Experimental results reveal that the insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity of the fabricated device at 1550 nm are 0.57, -19.67, and 0.094 dB in the case of TE polarization, while in the TM polarization, the relevant insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity are 0.57, -19.40, and 0.11 dB. Within a wavelength range from 1520 to 1600 nm, for the fabricated device working at TE polarization, the insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity are lower than 1.39, -17.64, and 0.14 dB. In the case of TM polarization, we achieved an insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity less than 1.23, -17.62, and 0.14 dB.

Abstract:A C-band polarization rotator-splitter based on a mode-evolution structure and an asymmetric directional coupler is proposed. The mode-evolution structure is designed in a bi-level taper through which the TM0 mode can evolve into the TE1 mode. Then the TE1 mode is coupled to the TE0 mode at the cross port using the asymmetric directional coupler. The input TE0 mode propagates along the waveguide without mode conversion and output at the through port. From the experimental results, the extinction ratio is lower than 30 dB and the excess loss is less than 1 dB for input TE0 mode at the whole C-band. For input TM0 mode, the ER and the EL are, respectively, lower than −10 and 1.5 dB.

Abstract:Based on the traditional directional coupler, we proposed a scheme to design on-chip polarization beam splitters using an inverse design method. In our scheme, the coupling area of the designed devices are only 0.48 μm×6.4 μm. By manipulating the refractive index of the coupling region, the devices can work in C-band, L-band, O-band, or any other communication band. Different from conventional design methods, which need to adjust the design parameters artificially, if the initial conditions are determined, the proposed scheme can automatically adjust the design parameters of devices according to specific requirements. The simulation results show that the insertion losses of the designed polarization beam splitters can be less than 0.4 dB (0.35 dB) for TE (TM) mode at the wavelengths of 1310, 1550, and 1600 nm, and the extinction ratios are larger than 19.9 dB for the TE and TM modes at all three wavelengths. Besides, the extinction ratios of both polarization states are more than 14.5 dB within the wavelength range of 1286–1364 nm, 1497–1568 nm, and 1553–1634 nm. At the same time, the insertion losses are smaller than 0.46 dB.

Abstract:We adopt the inverse-designed method and demonstrate an ultra-compact four-channel mode splitter with dual polarizations, which enables mode division multiplexing and polarization division multiplexing simultaneously without changing the mode orders and suitable for fabrication and integration based on silicon-on-insulator platform. The four TE 0 , TM 0 , TE 1 and TM 1 modes at the central wavelength of 1550 nm can be efficiently splitted with low insertion loss (<1.9 dB), low channel crosstalk (<−17 dB), low reflection loss (<−18 dB). Moreover, the proposed mode splitter has the potential of incorporating the wavelength division multiplexing for mass data transmission and high computing parallelism.
