Abstract:This study proposes and experimentally demonstrates a distributed feedback (DFB) laser with a distributed phase shift (DPS) region at the center of the DFB cavity. By modeling the field intensity distribution in the cavity and the output spectrum, the DPS region length and phase shift values have been optimized. Experimental comparisons with lasers using traditional {\pi}-phase shifts confirm that DFB lasers with optimized DPS lengths and larger phase shifts (up to 15{\pi}) achieve stable single longitudinal mode operation over a broader current range, with lower threshold current, higher power slope efficiency, and a higher side mode suppression ratio (SMSR). Furthermore, the minimum optical linewidth is reduced significantly, from 1.3 MHz to 220 kHz.

Analysis and Design of Combined Distributed-Feedback/fabry-perot Structures for Surface-Emitting Semiconductor Lasers

Abstract:We propose combined distributed-feedback/Fabry-Perot (DFB/FP) structures for surface-emitting semiconductor lasers. The analysis is based on coupled-wave equations modified for surface-emitting lasers. The proposed structures, which exhibit enhanced resonance due to a matching between the gain and field distributions resulting in a reduced threshold compared with simple FP structures, are formed by placing the DFB structure between two DBR mirrors of an FP resonant cavity and introducing phase layers between the DFB region and the mirrors. It was found that the periodic-gain structures are a special case of the combined DFB/FP structures in which the index coupling effect is assumed to be negligible due to a small fill factor or a small refractive-index difference. The effect of complex (gain and index) coupling on the design and the threshold characteristics of the structures is clearly illustrated. Some important design considerations that were neglected in the previous papers are addressed.

Abstract:A phased-matched combined distributed-feedback/Fabry-Pérot (DFB/FP) structure is proposed for semiconductor lasers, particularly for the surface-emitting type. The conditions for constructive resonances of the DFB and the FP sections are established. We demonstrate that the DFB/FP structure can have a much stronger resonance and consequently a lower threshold than simple DFB or FP structures with a comparable cavity length. It is also found that a lower threshold can be obtained if the laser wavelength is below the stop band of the DFB region, due to partial gain coupling in the structure.

Abstract:The matrix eigenvalues method is used to analyze the laser cavity in which the traditional spherical mirror is replaced by the phase type diffraction optical elements. The authors analyze, the characteristics of the modes under the conditions of different Frenesl number. The results show that this laser cavity can enhance the discrimination between spatial modes effectively and can be used to design the output laser beam.

Abstract:Dye-doped distributed feedback (DFB) structure is an essential structure for DFB laser. This paper presents an operative method to design a kind of dye-doped distributed feedback laser based on dye-doped holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) matrix. The results show that we have processed DFB structure of 10μm period, with a relatively low period deviation of less than 1%. Furthermore, we gain output characteristics of DFB structure through experimental methods, which show good characteristics for wide tuning range, narrow linewidth laser output production.

Abstract:A distributed feedback fiber laser employing an equivalent phase shift (EPS) of /spl pi/ is studied theoretically and experimentally for the first time. The EPS is formed through extending one sampling period by 50% in the center of a sampled Bragg grating. An output power of 0.20 mW with sidemode suppression of 67 dB is experimentally observed.

Abstract:The structure of a Q-modulated distributed feedback laser is designed and simulated. A large reflectivity modulation of the rear reflector is achieved by using an anti-resonant cavity formed by two deep trenches with the one between the modulator and phase section filled by a high index dielectric material. The travelling wave model is presented to analyze the high speed performance of the laser. Due to the effect of the wave propagation in the structure, the modulation extinction ratio decreases with increasing cavity length. It is shown that 40 Gb/s RZ signal modulation can be achieved with an extinction ratio of 7 dB and 10 dB, respectively, for a cavity length of 500 μm and 300 μm.

Abstract:Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers that are widely used in high-speed communication nowadays usually use end-facet strategy coating in order to seek a balance between fabrication difficulty and device performance. This paper investigates DFB lasers with a partial grating structure that is immune to the phase uncertainties at the end-facet with high-reflection (HR) film and the improvement of its output chirp characteristics. It is found that, after parameter optimization, the carrier concentration and photon density distribution along the partial grating DFB (PG-DFB) laser cavity can be more uniform, which helps to obtain a better production yield. In addition, a compromised choice of the length of grating region and waveguide region can ensure stable single-mode output, as well as sub-10 mA threshold and high slope efficiency (SE). We also find that the PG-DFB laser can reduce the transient chirp by about 5 GHz compared to conventional DFB laser with a uniform grating.

Abstract:The tunable distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers with cascaded configuration were designed and fabricated using equivalent phase shift (EPS) technique. 32-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels with 50-GHz and 100-GHz wavelength spacing were experimentally demonstrated. In such a tunable laser, single mode operation can be ensured by introducing EPS and the wavelength tuning can be realized by cascaded sections with specific sampling periods combining with chip heating. The proposed approach has some advantages such as good single mode property, low fabrication cost and feasibility of monolithic integration. The experimental results show that the tuning range can be nearly up to 25nm and the side mode suppression ratios (SMSRs) of most channels are above 40dB. The proposed laser should be promising for cost-effective applications in WDM systems.

Abstract:A rigorous analytic Bloch wave formalism is presented to calculate and analyze the photon lifetime of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. By expressing the electromagnetic fields in the DFB structure as a superposition of two counterpropagating Bloch waves, the DFB can be considered as a Fabry-Perot cavity for the Bloch waves. Analytic formulas for the laser threshold condition and the photon lifetime of DFB lasers are then derived, which have the same simple forms and physical insight as those for Fabry-Perot lasers. Numerical results are presented and interpreted along with comparisons with those obtained from the coupled mode theory and the transfer matrix method. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A λ/4 phase-shifted distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser with a preformed chirped grating used to compensate the spatial hole burning (SHB) induced index change is proposed and analyzed. It shows that compared with the three phase shifted DFB laser which is known for its good performance to eliminate SHB, the proposed SHB compensated laser has better single longitudinal mode property, narrower spectral linewidth and better dynamic characteristics.

Abstract:Clarifies that phase shift value in directly modulated distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB-LDs) affects their chirp characteristics and resistance to external optical feedback because of the feedback effect of mirror loss (FEML). Comparing /spl lambda//8, /spl lambda//4, and 3//spl lambda/8 phase-shifted DFB-LDs, theoretically and experimentally, showed that the negative FEML in /spl lambda//8 phase-shifted DFB-LDs improves their transmission performance and makes them more resistant to external optical feedback. It was demonstrated with 2.5-Gb/s directly modulated 1.55-/spl mu/m /spl lambda//8 phase-shifted DFB-LDs that a very low-power penalty for 100-km transmissions (less than 1 dB for BER=10/sup -10/) can be obtained within a wide extinction ratio from 8.5 to 14.5 dB. Excellent resistance to optical feedback was also demonstrated using /spl lambda//8 phase-shifted DFB-LDs: isolator-free 80-km transmission was successful under -14-dB external optical feedback. In addition, the relation of transmission characteristics to coupling coefficient /spl kappa/L and detuning between oscillation wavelength and gain maximum was also discussed here for designing low chirp /spl lambda//8 phase-shifted DFB-LDs.

Abstract:The high density intensity fringes and phase behavior in birefringent dual frequency laser with multiple feedback are studied for the first time. It was discovered that the fringes of output intensity are made of bipolar pulses with symmetric external cavity feedback and the fringe density is as high as compared to the conventional feedback. The high density cosine-like fringes are obtained with asymmetric external cavity feedback by adjusting the tilt angle of the feedback mirror and the fringe density is about 22 times higher compared to the conventional feedback. Moreover, there is a phase difference between the two cosine-like fringes and the phase difference is varied with the change of the external cavity length. The experimental results and a theoretical analysis are presented in this work. These results offer a large increase in the resolution for the optical feedback interferometer with the birefringence dual frequency laser.

Abstract:A novel multisection distributed feedback (MS-DFB) laser with varied ridge waveguide width is proposed to generate stable self-pulsations.Theoretical analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamic response of the proposed MS-DFB laser is carried out by solving the large-signal traveling-wave model with finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method.The stable self-pulsating output at 195 GHz is predicted for MS-DFB lasers with 1.5 μm and 3.0 μm ridge waveguide widths in the front and the rear DFB sections,respectively.

Abstract:Multiple phase-shifted (MPS) diffraction grating is an effective way proposed to overcome the spatial hole burning (SHB) effect in a distributed feedback (DFB) laser. We present two symmetric lambda/8 phase-shifted DFB lasers by using nanoimprint lithography (NIL). The threshold current of a typical laser is less than 15 mA. The side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is still above 42 dB even at 100mA current injection. To show the versatility of NIL, eight different wavelength MPS-DFB lasers on this single chip are also demonstrated. Our results prove that NIL is a promising tool for fabricating high performance complex grating DFB lasers.
A 795 Nm Gain Coupled Distributed Feedback Semiconductor Laser Based on Tilted Waveguides

Abstract:The 795 nm distributed feedback lasers have great application in pumping the Rb D1 transition. In this paper, in order to realize specific 795 nm lasing, we designed tilted ridge distributed feedback lasers based on purely gain coupled effect induced by periodic current injection windows through changing the angle of the tilted ridge. The fabricated devices were cleaved into 2 mm-cavity-length, including 5 tilted angles. The peak output powers of all devices were above 30 mW. Single longitudinal mode lasing was realized in all tilted Fabry–Perot cavities using periodic current injection windows, with side mode suppression ratio over 30 dB. The total wavelength range covered 8.656 nm at 20 °C. It was disclosed theoretically and experimentally that the output powers, threshold currents, and central wavelengths of the tilted ridge purely gain coupled DFB lasers were relevant to the tilted angles. The results will be instructive for future design of DFB laser arrays with different central wavelengths.

Abstract:A widely tunable distributed feedback (DFB)semiconductor laser with constant power and narrow linewidth is fabricated. The laser chip is based on the asymmetric phase-shifted DFB structure, which can effectively narrow the bandwidth of the output. By precisely controlling the temperature and driving current, the dynamic characteristic of internal carriers and the refractive index of the material can be controlled effectively, so wide-band tuning wavelength and constant output power are obtained. The wavelength tuning range is over 3. 5 nm, the laser power is 7. 4 mW, the linewidth is about 220kHz and the side mode suppression radio is 52. 7dB. This laser has wide application prospects for tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy(TDLAS).

Abstract:Active feedback has been employed in the context of DFB lasers to generate chirp signals with narrow linewidth. While recent works often adopt heterodyne structures, homodyne structures, despite their simplicity, struggle to stabilize lasers at the in-phase point of delay line frequency discriminators for long term. This study introduces an active feedback method employing a 3×3 optical coupler and digital signal processing to break the phase limitation of homodyne delay line frequency discriminators, thus facilitating the generation of arbitrary frequencies. The proposed structure enables precise control of laser frequency with high linearity. This approach also achieves a linewidth reduction in DFB laser from 2.4 MHz to 5.8 kHz. The jitter is reduced from 56 ps to 30 fs (integrated within 10 Hz – 1 MHz). Additionally, the frequency tuning range of laser exceeds 6 GHz and its time response achieves a level on the order of a few hundred nanoseconds.
