Abstract:With the rapid development of metasurface and metamaterials, the image edge detection based on the optical spatial differential calculation becomes an interesting topic in recent years. There have been a certain number of studies in this region, but most of them are applicable only to one-dimensional optical spatial differential calculation. In this work, a two-dimensional optical differentiator using Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase metasurface is proposed and implemented in optical image two-dimensional edge detection. Based on the principle of the spin-dependent splitting from P-B phase devices, this metasurface is capable of separating the left-handed circularly polarized light from the right-handed circularly polarized light at a certain spatial distance. After filtering out the overlapped linear polarization, the left optical information is the result of the two-dimensional optical spatial differential. Meanwhile, the resolution of the image edge information is adjustable by changing the optic axis distribution of this two-dimensional optical differentiator. These results indicate that our P-B phase metasurface can be applied to the extraction of the optical image two-dimensional edge information, and the extracted edge information is more complete than the previous one-dimensional grating metasurface. For these advantages, this two-dimensional optical differentiator shows great potential applications in ultrafast optical calculation and image processing.

Abstract:The wavefront shaping based technique has been introduced to detect the edges of amplitude objects through complex media, but the extraction of the boundary information of invisible phase objects through complex media has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we present a phase contrast imaging technique to overcome the scattering, aiming to achieve the edge detection of the phase object through the complex media. An operator based on the experimentally measured transmission matrix is obtained by numerically adding a spiral phase in the Fourier domain. With the inverse of the filtered transmission matrix, we can directly reconstruct the edge enhanced images for both amplitude object and phase object beyond scattering. Experimentally, both digital and real objects are imaged, and the results verify that isotropic edge detection can be achieved with our technique. Our work could benefit the detection of invisible phase objects through complex media.

Abstract:Recently, phase retrieval techniques have garnered significant attention with their exceptional flexibility. However, their application is limited in optical systems with high numerical aperture due to the disregarded polarization properties of the beam. In this paper, a fast wavefront sensing method for tightly focused systems is proposed. Firstly, a vector diffraction model based on the chirp-Z transform is established to analytically describe the focal spot using the modal coefficients of polynomials and diffraction basis vectors, which accommodating any pixel size and resolution, thereby enabling to break through sampling constraints and remove lateral errors. Additionally, a modified Newton-gradient second-order algorithm is introduced to simultaneously optimize wavefront in multiple polarization directions, without the need for diffraction operators during iterations. Both numerical simulations and error analysis confirm the efficacy and precision of the proposed wavefront sensing method.

Abstract:Phase measuring profilometry based on structured illumination with a digital projector has great flexibility. However, the phase error introduced by the gamma nonlinearity of the projector and the presence of speckle noise inevitably decreases the accuracy and resolution of the measurement. This paper presents a new phase error correction algorithm by which the odd-step fringe projection is done twice with an initial phase shift of π between, and the two captured deformed fringe images are then digitally subtracted. The speckle noise is further suppressed by applying a sine-cosine median filter. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that this algorithm is effective and fast.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a lensless coding edge enhancement imaging technology based on a spiral zone aperture whose system comprises a spiral zone aperture and an image sensor. A captured image is reconstructed by backpropagation. In backpropagation, isotropic edge enhancement imaging can be realized by taking the intensity value, whereas anisotropic edge enhancement imaging can be realized by taking the real or imaginary part. The theoretical derivation and verification of the anisotropy edge enhancement imaging achieved by taking the real part are performed, and an initial phase factor is introduced to realize the anisotropic edge enhancement imaging with selective directions. Our numerical simulations and experimental results verify the consistency between theoretical analysis and experimental results, and a quantitative comparative analysis is performed for the edge enhancement reconstruction results using the lensless imaging system with Fresnel and spiral zone apertures respectively. The results verify that a spiral zone aperture is more suitable for edge enhancement imaging. The proposed technology can be applied to intelligent recognition, defect detection, and virtual reality tasks.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast imaging alleviates the information load by extracting the geometric features of objects and is one of the most representative branches of instant imaging processing. The self-healing capacity of edge detectors can enhance their robustness to obstacles in practical applications. Here, a self-healing spiral phase contrast imaging scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by a liquid crystal edge detector combining a spiral phase, an axicon phase, and a lens phase. The spiral phase is encoded into a liquid crystal by photopatterning. Self-healing contrast imaging is characterized by a series of edge images of both high-contrast amplitude-type and low-contrast phase-type objects. This work extends the self-healing capacity of these detectors to instant imaging processing and paves the way for optical applications with self-healing features.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast imaging is an effective technique for the edge enhancement of a phase object. The spiral phase filter is the core component of the system and it provides sensitivity to the phase and amplitude gradients of the object. General spiral phase contrast imaging depends on the 4f imaging system in a single light beam with the coherent light source of visible or infrared wavelengths. Here, we constructed a non-local edge enhanced imaging system using an incoherent thermal light source. The detected object and the adopted spiral phase filter were non-locally placed in two separated light beams. The edge enhanced ghost image of the phase object can then be achieved through second-order intensity correlation measurements. The classical nature of the spatial degree of freedom of our proposed edge enhanced ghost imaging system was also demonstrated through the measurement of Bell-type inequality.

Abstract:An approach for edge-enhanced imaging based on the optical element that generates a curvilinear vortex beam with intensity and phase distributions along arbitrary curves was proposed, which is different from the classic edge-enhanced imaging method with a 4f imaging system. It is demonstrated that the image edge can be enhanced by modulating the optical element that generates the curvilinear vortex beam with a ring or ellipse trajectory. By setting the factor that determines the ring or elliptical trajectory of the curvilinear vortex beam, the intensity distribution of the optical element can be controlled, resulting in directional enhancement of the image. Furthermore, by clipping the optical element, the image edge can be enhanced in the selective region. It is helpful for the further applications of the optical element that generates the curvilinear vortex beams in optical imaging, especially higher contrast and resolution images.

Abstract:Spiral phase plate (SPP) for generating vortex hollow beams has high efficiency in various applications. However, it is difficult to obtain an ideal spiral phase plate because of its continuous-varying helical phase and discontinued phase step. This paper describes the demonstration of continuous spiral phase plate using filter methods. The numerical simulations indicate that different filter method including spatial domain filter, frequency domain filter has unique impact on surface topography of SPP and optical vortex characteristics. The experimental results reveal that the spatial Gaussian filter method for smoothing SPP is suitable for Computer Controlled Optical Surfacing (CCOS) technique and obtains good optical properties.

Abstract:We propose to use a super-structured waveplate (called an S-waveplate) for vectorial optical vortex filtering, and experimentally demonstrate the radial Hilbert transform and selective edge enhancement. Based on the Jones calculus of polarization states and Fourier analysis, we calculate and analyze the point spread function of an optical 4-f system including an S-waveplate filter having the vectorial vortex of topological charge 1 (TC = 1). Numerical simulations and optical experiments demonstrate that a vectorial optical vortex filter can be used to implement selective edge enhancement with an analyzer before the output plane. The edge enhancement can be obtained even when the center of the filter is off-axis or the illuminating light is non-monochromatic.
Phase asymmetry ultrasound despeckling with fractional anisotropic diffusion and total variation

Abstract:We propose an ultrasound speckle filtering method for not only preserving various edge features but also filtering tissue-dependent complex speckle noises in ultrasound images. The key idea is to detect these various edges using a phase congruence-based edge significance measure called phase asymmetry (PAS), which is invariant to the intensity amplitude of edges and takes 0 in non-edge smooth regions and 1 at the idea step edge, while also taking intermediate values at slowly varying ramp edges. By leveraging the PAS metric in designing weighting coefficients to maintain a balance between fractional-order anisotropic diffusion and total variation (TV) filters in TV cost function, we propose a new fractional TV framework to not only achieve the best despeckling performance with ramp edge preservation but also reduce the staircase effect produced by integral-order filters. Then, we exploit the PAS metric in designing a new fractional-order diffusion coefficient to properly preserve low-contrast edges in diffusion filtering. Finally, different from fixed fractional-order diffusion filters, an adaptive fractional order is introduced based on the PAS metric to enhance various weak edges in the spatially transitional areas between objects. The proposed fractional TV model is minimized using the gradient descent method to obtain the final denoised image. The experimental results and real application of ultrasound breast image segmentation show that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art ultrasound despeckling filters for both speckle reduction and feature preservation in terms of visual evaluation and quantitative indices.

Abstract:A multilayer phase-shifting-surface-based flat plate is designed to offer a combination of lens and spiral phase plate (SPP) for orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam generation and convergence at 60 GHz. The proposed design consists of a series of phase-shift unit cells to control the emergent phase and form a flat lens for the purpose of beam focusing. The results of simulation and experiment verify that the OAM beam with small divergence angle can be achieved.
Single-pixel edge enhancement of object via convolutional filtering with localized vortex phase

Abstract:Microscopy is an essential tool in imaging research, and the edge-enhanced microscope by using the vortex filter is of particular interest as an optical information processing that highlights amplitude and phase edges of object in all directions. The application of this technique is not limited to the visible range, but edge enhancement of object in invisible wavelength is also crucial for near-infrared fluorescence and electronic circuit inspection through silicon semiconductors. One disadvantage of near-infrared imaging is that digital cameras such as CCD and CMOS become much more expensive than cameras for the visible spectrum. As an cost-effective method to implement invisible edge enhancement, the Fourier single-pixel imaging has already been proposed without using a camera, but using a single-pixel detector. However, this method requires 3 or 4 times more single-pixel measurements due to the three-phase or four-phase shift to detect optical complex amplitude in Fourier domain. In response, we propose a method for single-pixel edge enhancement of object via convolutional filtering with a localized vortex phase, eliminating the extra single-pixel measurements required by the phase-shifting method. Our simulation results show that the correlation coefficient between the ideal edges of an object and the edge enhanced by our proposed method is 0.95, indicating that our method is effective way to detect the edges. This novel and effective approach for enhancing and detecting the edges of object can be valuable in various invisible imaging applications.

Edge-Enhanced Microscopy of Comlplex Object using Scalar and Vectorial Vortex Filtering

Abstract:Recently, $4f$ system containing a q-plate has been used to perform edge detection and enhancement of amplitude and phase objects. However, only few studies have concentrated on edge enhancement of phase-amplitude objects. Here, we experimentally verified the functional difference between scalar and vectorial vortex filtering using an onion cell, the experimental results agree well with theoretical analysis. We verified our experimental results through numerical simulation. Although vectorial vortex filtering successfully enhanced the edges of phase and amplitude objects in the phase-amplitude object, they are indistinguishable due to the equal enhancement of the edges of the phase and amplitude objects. To address this, we propose a method to isolate the edge of the phase object from the edge of the amplitude object using off-axis beam illumination. We theoretically calculated the isolation of the edge of the phase object from the amplitude object, and verified via numerical simulations.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast is an important and convenient imaging processing technology in edge detection, and a broader field-of-view (FOV) of imaging is a long-pursuing aim to see more regions of the illumination objects. Compared with near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, the up-conversion imaging in visible spectrum benefits from the advantages of higher efficiency detection and lower potential speckle. FOV enhanced and spiral phase contrast up-conversion imaging processing methods by using second order nonlinear frequency up-conversion from NIR spectrum to visible spectrum in two different configurations are presented in this work. By changing the temperature of crystal, controllable spatial patterns of imaging with more than 4.5 times enhancement of FOV is realized in both configurations. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree well with the experimental observations. Our results provide a very promising way in imaging processing, which may be widely used in biomedicine, remote sensing and up-conversion monitoring.
A Highly Efficient Superresolving Phase Filter for a Radially Polarized Beam

Abstract:We simulate the focal intensity distribution of a radially polarized beam, in view of the vector diffraction theory. We summarize two important rules: (i) the marginal ray of the aperture determines the focal size on the focal plane; (ii) the ratio of the longitudinal component to the transversal component affects the shape of the focus. We design a continuous phase filter using these rules for a confocal system. We chose the tangent of the semi-aperture angle to build up the phase function, because it is sensitive to the marginal rays, which have large aperture angles. To achieve a flexible modulation, we use a quadratic function for unwrapping the phase. We optimize the parameters of the quadratic function and achieve a transverse superresolving focus. Aiming at different Strehl ratios, we obtain a series of superresolution phase filters. Compared with others, the filter proposed has the advantages of superior superresolution effect and higher energy utilization ratios. The phase-filter design is universal and proved to be valid. It can be employed in either high or low NA systems, superresolving or donut focus applications.

Abstract:In this study, we propose an edge detection scheme based on Fourier single-pixel imaging, which extracts edges directly from the Fourier spectrum of the target object. The numerical simulations and experimental results show that the edges extracted by the proposed scheme have a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than those extracted by the phase-shift sinusoidal pattern scheme. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of edge extraction in the case of undersampling and propose a plug-and-play edge detection algorithm to enhance the image. Our work combines Fourier single-pixel imaging with edge detection to extract the edges of a target object without imaging, providing a new idea for edge detection techniques.
