Abstract:In this study, we propose a lensless coding edge enhancement imaging technology based on a spiral zone aperture whose system comprises a spiral zone aperture and an image sensor. A captured image is reconstructed by backpropagation. In backpropagation, isotropic edge enhancement imaging can be realized by taking the intensity value, whereas anisotropic edge enhancement imaging can be realized by taking the real or imaginary part. The theoretical derivation and verification of the anisotropy edge enhancement imaging achieved by taking the real part are performed, and an initial phase factor is introduced to realize the anisotropic edge enhancement imaging with selective directions. Our numerical simulations and experimental results verify the consistency between theoretical analysis and experimental results, and a quantitative comparative analysis is performed for the edge enhancement reconstruction results using the lensless imaging system with Fresnel and spiral zone apertures respectively. The results verify that a spiral zone aperture is more suitable for edge enhancement imaging. The proposed technology can be applied to intelligent recognition, defect detection, and virtual reality tasks.
Amp-vortex Edge-Camera: a Lensless Multi-Modality Imaging System with Edge Enhancement.

Abstract:We demonstrate a lensless imaging system with edge-enhanced imaging constructed with a Fresnel zone aperture (FZA) mask placed 3 mm away from a CMOS sensor. We propose vortex back-propagation (vortex-BP) and amplitude vortex-BP algorithms for the FZA-based lensless imaging system to remove the noise and achieve the fast reconstruction of high contrast edge enhancement. Directionally controlled anisotropic edge enhancement can be achieved with our proposed superimposed vortex-BP algorithm. With different reconstruction algorithms, the proposed amp-vortex edge-camera in this paper can achieve 2D bright filed imaging, isotropic, and directional controllable anisotropic edge-enhanced imaging with incoherent light illumination, by a single-shot captured hologram. The effect of edge detection is the same as optical edge detection, which is the re-distribution of light energy. Noise-free in-focus edge detection can be achieved by using back-propagation, without a de-noise algorithm, which is an advantage over other lensless imaging technologies. This is expected to be widely used in autonomous driving, artificial intelligence recognition in consumer electronics, etc.

Abstract:Edge enhancement, as an important part of image processing, has played an essential role in amplitude-contrast and phase-contrast object imaging. The edge enhancement of three-dimensional (3D) vortex imaging has been successfully implemented by Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH), but the background noise and image contrast effects are still not satisfactory. To solve these issues, the edge enhancement of FINCH by employing Bessel-like spiral phase modulation is proposed and demonstrated. Compared with the conventional spiral phase modulated FINCH, the proposed technique can achieve high-quality edge enhancement 3D vortex imaging with lower background noise, higher contrast and resolution. The significantly improved imaging quality is mainly attributed to the effective sidelobes' suppression in the generated optical vortices with the Bessel-like modulation technique. Experimental results of the small circular aperture, resolution target, and the Drosophila melanogaster verify its excellent imaging performance. Moreover, we also proposed a new method for selective edge enhancement of 3D vortex imaging by breaking the symmetry of the spiral phase in the algorithmic model of isotropic edge enhancement. The reconstructed images of the circular aperture show that the proposed method is able to enhance the edges of the given objects selectively in any desired direction.

Abstract:High-performance image-forming systems often require high system complexity due to the overdetermined nature of optical aberration correction. What we present here is a novel computational imaging modality which can achieve high-performance imaging using a simple non-image-forming optical system. The presented optical system contains an aspherical non-imaging lens which is designed with the optimal transfer of light radiation between an object and a detector. All spatial frequencies of the object collected by the non-imaging lens are delivered to the detector. No image is formed on the detector, and a full-path optical diffraction calculation method is developed to recover a high-quality image of the object from multiple intensity measurements. The effectiveness and high performance of the proposed imaging modality is verified by the examples.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast imaging alleviates the information load by extracting the geometric features of objects and is one of the most representative branches of instant imaging processing. The self-healing capacity of edge detectors can enhance their robustness to obstacles in practical applications. Here, a self-healing spiral phase contrast imaging scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by a liquid crystal edge detector combining a spiral phase, an axicon phase, and a lens phase. The spiral phase is encoded into a liquid crystal by photopatterning. Self-healing contrast imaging is characterized by a series of edge images of both high-contrast amplitude-type and low-contrast phase-type objects. This work extends the self-healing capacity of these detectors to instant imaging processing and paves the way for optical applications with self-healing features.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast imaging is an effective technique for the edge enhancement of a phase object. The spiral phase filter is the core component of the system and it provides sensitivity to the phase and amplitude gradients of the object. General spiral phase contrast imaging depends on the 4f imaging system in a single light beam with the coherent light source of visible or infrared wavelengths. Here, we constructed a non-local edge enhanced imaging system using an incoherent thermal light source. The detected object and the adopted spiral phase filter were non-locally placed in two separated light beams. The edge enhanced ghost image of the phase object can then be achieved through second-order intensity correlation measurements. The classical nature of the spatial degree of freedom of our proposed edge enhanced ghost imaging system was also demonstrated through the measurement of Bell-type inequality.

Abstract:The wavefront shaping based technique has been introduced to detect the edges of amplitude objects through complex media, but the extraction of the boundary information of invisible phase objects through complex media has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we present a phase contrast imaging technique to overcome the scattering, aiming to achieve the edge detection of the phase object through the complex media. An operator based on the experimentally measured transmission matrix is obtained by numerically adding a spiral phase in the Fourier domain. With the inverse of the filtered transmission matrix, we can directly reconstruct the edge enhanced images for both amplitude object and phase object beyond scattering. Experimentally, both digital and real objects are imaged, and the results verify that isotropic edge detection can be achieved with our technique. Our work could benefit the detection of invisible phase objects through complex media.

Abstract:An approach for edge-enhanced imaging based on the optical element that generates a curvilinear vortex beam with intensity and phase distributions along arbitrary curves was proposed, which is different from the classic edge-enhanced imaging method with a 4f imaging system. It is demonstrated that the image edge can be enhanced by modulating the optical element that generates the curvilinear vortex beam with a ring or ellipse trajectory. By setting the factor that determines the ring or elliptical trajectory of the curvilinear vortex beam, the intensity distribution of the optical element can be controlled, resulting in directional enhancement of the image. Furthermore, by clipping the optical element, the image edge can be enhanced in the selective region. It is helpful for the further applications of the optical element that generates the curvilinear vortex beams in optical imaging, especially higher contrast and resolution images.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast is an important and convenient imaging processing technology in edge detection, and a broader field-of-view (FOV) of imaging is a long-pursuing aim to see more regions of the illumination objects. Compared with near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, the up-conversion imaging in visible spectrum benefits from the advantages of higher efficiency detection and lower potential speckle. FOV enhanced and spiral phase contrast up-conversion imaging processing methods by using second order nonlinear frequency up-conversion from NIR spectrum to visible spectrum in two different configurations are presented in this work. By changing the temperature of crystal, controllable spatial patterns of imaging with more than 4.5 times enhancement of FOV is realized in both configurations. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree well with the experimental observations. Our results provide a very promising way in imaging processing, which may be widely used in biomedicine, remote sensing and up-conversion monitoring.
Fast selective edge-enhanced imaging with topological chiral lamellar superstructures

Abstract:Edge detection is a fundamental operation for feature extraction in image processing. The all-optical method has aroused growing interest owing to its ultra-fast speed, low energy consumption and parallel computation. However, current optical edge detection methods are generally limited to static devices and fixed functionality. Herein, we propose a fast-switchable scheme based on a ferroelectric liquid crystal topological structure. The self-assembled chiral lamellar superstructure, directed by the azimuthally variant photo-alignment agent, can be dynamically controlled by the polarity of the external electric field and respectively generates the vector beams with nearly orthogonal polarization distribution. Even after thousands of cycles, the horizontal and vertical edges of the object are selectively enhanced with an ultra-fast switching time of ∼57 μs. Broadband edge-enhanced imaging is efficiently demonstrated. This work extends the ingenious building of topological heliconical superstructures and offers an important glimpse into their potential in the emerging frontiers of optical computing for artificial intelligence.
Coded Illumination for Improved Lensless Imaging

Abstract:Mask-based lensless cameras can be flat, thin, and light-weight, which makes them suitable for novel designs of computational imaging systems with large surface areas and arbitrary shapes. Despite recent progress in lensless cameras, the quality of images recovered from the lensless cameras is often poor due to the ill-conditioning of the underlying measurement system. In this paper, we propose to use coded illumination to improve the quality of images reconstructed with lensless cameras. In our imaging model, the scene/object is illuminated by multiple coded illumination patterns as the lensless camera records sensor measurements. We designed and tested a number of illumination patterns and observed that shifting dots (and related orthogonal) patterns provide the best overall performance. We propose a fast and low-complexity recovery algorithm that exploits the separability and block-diagonal structure in our system. We present simulation results and hardware experiment results to demonstrate that our proposed method can significantly improve the reconstruction quality.

Abstract:A single multimode fiber has been applied in minimally invasive endoscopy with wavefront shaping for biological research such as brain imaging. Most of the fibers, such as step-index and graded-index multimode fibers, give rise to spatially variant blur due to limits on the numerical aperture and collection efficiency. Routines to solve this problem are based on iterative algorithms, which are often slow and computer-intense. We developed a method to synthesize datasets for driving a deep learning network to deblur and denoise the spatially variant degraded image. This approach is fast (5 ms), up to three orders of magnitude faster than the iterative way. Furthermore, our method can be applied to different types of fiber endoscopy, and two types of fiber are tested here. The performance is verified on fluorescence beads and three kinds of biological tissue sections in the experiment, demonstrating effectiveness in image enhancement.
Single-pixel edge enhancement of object via convolutional filtering with localized vortex phase

Abstract:Microscopy is an essential tool in imaging research, and the edge-enhanced microscope by using the vortex filter is of particular interest as an optical information processing that highlights amplitude and phase edges of object in all directions. The application of this technique is not limited to the visible range, but edge enhancement of object in invisible wavelength is also crucial for near-infrared fluorescence and electronic circuit inspection through silicon semiconductors. One disadvantage of near-infrared imaging is that digital cameras such as CCD and CMOS become much more expensive than cameras for the visible spectrum. As an cost-effective method to implement invisible edge enhancement, the Fourier single-pixel imaging has already been proposed without using a camera, but using a single-pixel detector. However, this method requires 3 or 4 times more single-pixel measurements due to the three-phase or four-phase shift to detect optical complex amplitude in Fourier domain. In response, we propose a method for single-pixel edge enhancement of object via convolutional filtering with a localized vortex phase, eliminating the extra single-pixel measurements required by the phase-shifting method. Our simulation results show that the correlation coefficient between the ideal edges of an object and the edge enhanced by our proposed method is 0.95, indicating that our method is effective way to detect the edges. This novel and effective approach for enhancing and detecting the edges of object can be valuable in various invisible imaging applications.

Abstract:With the development of optical information processing technology, image edge enhancement technology has rapidly received extensive attention, especially in the field of quantum imaging. However, quantum edge enhanced imaging faces challenges in terms of time-consuming acquisition processes and the complexity of the devices used, which limits practical applications in real-time usage scenarios. Here we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a real-time (0.5 Hz) quantum edge enhanced imaging method that combines the spiral phase contrast technique with heralded single-photon imaging. The edge enhancement results show high quality and background free from raw data. Compared with direct imaging, our configuration can improve the signal-to-noise ratio significantly using the tight time correlations between photon pairs. The method also offers competitive advantages over ghost imaging, including higher brightness and a compact optical fiber delay rather than a free space delay. Additionally, we explore curved edge enhancement for specific feature recognition and the oriented shadow effect. Overall, this efficient and versatile platform paves an alternative path toward real-time quantum edge detection in applications including nondestructive bio-imaging, night vision and covert monitoring.
Scene-adaptive Coded Apertures Imaging

Abstract: Coded aperture imaging systems have recently shown great success in recovering scene depth and extending the depth-of-field. The ideal pattern, however, would have to serve two conflicting purposes: 1) be broadband to ensure robust deconvolution and 2) has sufficient zero-crossings for a high depth discrepancy. This paper presents a simple but effective scene-adaptive coded aperture solution to bridge this gap. We observe that the geometric structures in a natural scene often exhibit only a few edge directions, and the successive frames are closely correlated. Therefore we adopt a spatial partitioning and temporal propagation scheme. In each frame, we address one principal direction by applying depth-discriminative codes along it and broadband codes along its orthogonal direction. Since within a frame only the regions with edge direction corresponding to its aperture code behaves well, we utilize the close among-frame correlation to propagate the high quality single frame results temporally to obtain high performance over the whole image lattice. To physically implement this scheme, we use a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) microdisplay that permits fast changing pattern codes. Firstly, we capture the scene with a pinhole and analyze the scene content to determine primary edge orientations. Secondly, we sequentially apply the proposed coding scheme with these orientations in the following frames. Experiments on both synthetic and real scenes show that our technique is able to combine advantages of the state-of-the-art patterns for recovering better quality depth map and all-focus images.
Non-line-of-sight imaging based on Archimedean spiral scanning

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight imaging can reconstruct objects hidden out of sight, which has drawn great attention in recent years. However, long data acquisition time is required since most of transient non-line-of-sight imaging need multi-point raster scanning of the visible wall. Here, we propose an Archimedean spiral scanning method based on confocal non-line-of-sight imaging, which greatly reduces the data acquisition time. Fewer scanning points are sufficient for imaging owing to accurate extraction of effective information. The Archimedean spiral scanning method is experimentally verified with published data and real scenes, then the curvature regularization algorithm is used to process data to achieve higher quality imaging. In the case of guaranteeing the imaging quality, the number of scanning points is reduced by an order of magnitude with the proposed method compared to traditional multi-point raster scanning method in this experiment. As a comparison, the imaging quality of Archimedean spiral scanning method is higher than those of the circular and confocal non-line-of-sight scanning methods at the same number of scanning points. This scanning method is expected to have a certain remarkable effect for real-time NLOS imaging.

Abstract:Lensless imagers based on diffusers or encoding masks enable high-dimensional imaging from a single shot measurement and have been applied in various applications. However, to further extract image information such as edge detection, conventional post-processing filtering operations are needed after the reconstruction of the original object images in the diffuser imaging systems. Here, we present the concept of a temporal compressive edge detection method based on a lensless diffuser camera, which can directly recover a time sequence of edge images of a moving object from a single-shot measurement, without further post-processing steps. Our approach provides higher image quality during edge detection, compared with the conventional post-processing method. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by both numerical simulation and experiments. The proof-of-concept approach can be further developed with other image post-process operations or versatile computer vision assignments toward task-oriented intelligent lensless imaging systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a terahertz (THz) spiral spatial filtering (SSF) imaging method that can enable image contrast enhancement. The related theory includes three main steps: (1) the THz image of the target is Fourier transformed to the spatial spectrum distribution; (2) the spatial spectrum is modulated by a spiral phase at the Fourier plane; (3) the filtered spatial spectrum is inverse Fourier transformed to the desired THz image. Meanwhile, analytic expression of the final THz image is derived. Due to the unique nature of the spiral phase, THz image contrast enhancement can be achieved and verified by various simulated target images with different contrasts. In our designed THz SSF imaging system, Fourier transform is carried out by the lens, and the spiral phase is acquired by the spiral phase plate (SPP). Proof-of-principle experiments with three different types of targets (carved metal letters, a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piece with a scratch, and a leaf) were carried out, and the effectiveness of contrast enhancement and edge extraction on the THz reconstruction images was validated.
