Abstract:Octave-spanning optical frequency comb (OFC) generation has achieved great breakthroughs and enabled significant applications in many fields, such as optical clocks and spectroscopy. Here, we demonstrate octave-spanning OFC generation with a repetition rate of tens of GHz via a four-wave mixing (FWM) effect seeded by a dual-mode microcavity laser for the first time, to our knowledge. A 120-m Brillouin nonlinear fiber loop is first utilized to generate wideband OFCs using the FWM effect. Subsequently, a time-domain optical pulse is shaped by appropriate optical filtering via fiber Bragg gratings. The high-repetition-rate pulse train is further boosted to 11 pJ through optimal optical amplification and dispersion compensation. Finally, an octave optical comb spanning from 1100 to 2200 nm is successfully realized through the self-phase modulation effect and dispersion wave generation in a commercial nonlinear optical fiber. Using dual-mode microcavity lasers with different mode intervals, we achieve frequency combs with octave bandwidths and repetition rates of 29–65 GHz, and demonstrate the dual-mode lasing microcavity laser as an ideal seeding light source for octave-spanning OFC generation.

Abstract:A coherent optical frequency comb with a gigahertz line spacing is important in diverse fields, such as calibration of astronomical spectrographs and wavelength division multiplexing optical communications. In this paper, we realize octave-spanning 10-GHz optical combs using a directly-modulated 1.55 μm microlaser as a seeding source. A 6.4 ps transform-limited pulse is successfully generated from the directly-modulated laser output through optimal chirp compensation in a fiber. Moreover, after amplifying by an EDFA, the optical pulse width is further reduced to 140 fs by combing the self-phase modulation effect and the anomalous group velocity dispersion in commercial fibers. Finally, a coherent optical comb spanning from 900-2400 nm is produced in a home-made fluorotellurite fiber using the 140-fs pulse boosted to a few Watts as a seeding source. The experimental results demonstrate that optical combs generated from the directly-modulated microlaser have the potential for a fully stabilized frequency comb.

Abstract:A dual-pump Brillouin-erbium fiber laser is proposed to produce a relatively flat broadband Brillouin comb, in which the two beam of CW lights with the different wavelength are simultaneously injected into a double-ring cavity consisting of a sub-fiber loop (SFL) and a main fiber cavity (MFC). A part of Stokes waves and backward Rayleigh scattered (RS) Brillouin pump (BP) lights generated from a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) in the MFC are fed back through the SFL to form laser oscillations in a half-open cavity. Meanwhile, another part of the generated Stokes waves and backward RS lights of the BP are injected to the HNLF through the MFC to generate laser oscillations. Moreover, in combination with the dual-light injecting, four-wave mixing, and stimulated Brillouin scattering are remarkably enhanced, as a result, more and flatter Brillouin comb lines were produced. Since the Brillouin frequency shift in the fiber is dependent on the pump wavelength, the frequency intervals generated at different wavelength locations will usually vary slightly depending on the pump wavelength. As a demonstration, a broadband Brillouin comb spanning over 80 nm was achieved. 443 comb lines within a 30-dB peak power variation, and 229 comb lines within a 20-dB peak power variation were initiated. Due to the combination of multiple mechanisms, the maximum peak variation of the generated Brillouin comb is only 0.414 dB, indicating that the proposed system is extremely stable.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the generation of optical frequency combs via fourwave mixing in a dual wavelength Brillouin laser cavity. When pumped by two continuous-wave lasers with a varied frequency separation, dual wavelength Brillouin lasers with reduced linewidth and improved optical signal to noise ratios are generated in a direction opposite to the pump laser. Simultaneously, cavity-enhanced cascaded four-wave mixing between dual wavelength Brillouin lasers occurs in the laser cavity, causing the generation of broadband optical frequency combs with step tunable mode spacing from 40 to 1300 GHz. Compared to the cavity-less case, the number of the comb lines generated in the dual wavelength Brillouin laser cavity is increased by similar to 38 times. (C) 2017 Author(s).

Abstract:In this paper, a simple and all-fiber frequency comb generator by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is demonstrated. The optical resonator is composed of a segment of highly nonlinear fiber and two optical loop mirrors. Besides these, a segment of 6m-long erbium-doped fiber was placed in the resonator to provided linear gain. A tunable laser and a 980-nm laser diode were used as the Brillouin pump and the EDF pump respectively. When the wavelength and the power of pump lasers are adjusted correctly, dozens of comb lines with comb spacing in 0.075 nm (9.37 GHz) are obtained.

Abstract:A highly coherent optical frequency comb (OFC) based on spectral broadening of a phase-locked dual-wavelength microcavity laser is presented. By directly modulating the microcavity laser to generate multiple sidebands, the cross-injection locking of the dual modes is achieved and the beat-signal linewidth is improved from 13.5 MHz to less than 100 Hz. Subsequently, 21 flat comb teeth in a ±3 dB power variation are achieved by combining a phase modulator. Finally, an OFC with a bandwidth of 16 nm is successfully realized by narrowing the optical pulse and spectral broadening in a commercial nonlinear optical fiber. The repetition rate has a low phase noise of -102 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, demonstrating the generated OFC has a high degree of coherence.

Abstract:A flat and broadband optical frequency comb generator based on two cascaded intensity modulators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this scheme, we first use even or odd harmonic sidebands to generate optical frequency comb, so the bandwidth can be improved. By adjusting the power of the microwave signals and the direct current bias applied to the modulators, a flat and broadband optical frequency comb can be achieved. The scheme is relatively simple and adjustable, where the frequencies spacing vary with microwave frequency applied on modulators. 15 and 20 comb lines with the comb flatness within 1dB can be generated. The generated spectrums can meet the requirement of OFDM modulation, and can be used for high capacity optical transmission systems in the future.

Abstract:A broadband optical frequency comb with a flexible frequency spacing and a center wavelength is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed scheme consists of a single continuous-wave laser, cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and phase modulator (PM), two-stage dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear fibers (DF-HNLFs), and a single-mode fiber in between. A narrow-band frequency comb is generated in the MZM and PM, and a broadband frequency comb is achieved by a self-phase modulation based spectral broadening in the DF-HNLFs. Since the DF-HNLF has low dispersion over a wide wavelength range, the central wavelength of the generated frequency comb can be tuned from 1535 to 1564 nm. In addition, the central wavelength of frequency comb has a potential to be extended to L-band according to the dispersion profile of the DF-HNLF and the operation bandwidths of the MZM and PM. By tuning the driving radio-frequency signal, the frequency spacing of the generated frequency comb can be tuned. In the experiment, the frequency spacing of 25 and 40 GHz has been achieved.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs provide equidistant frequency markers in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet, and can be used to link an unknown optical frequency to a radio or microwave frequency reference. Since their inception, frequency combs have triggered substantial advances in optical frequency metrology and precision measurements and in applications such as broadband laser-based gas sensing and molecular fingerprinting. Early work generated frequency combs by intra-cavity phase modulation; subsequently, frequency combs have been generated using the comb-like mode structure of mode-locked lasers, whose repetition rate and carrier envelope phase can be stabilized. Here we report a substantially different approach to comb generation, in which equally spaced frequency markers are produced by the interaction between a continuous-wave pump laser of a known frequency with the modes of a monolithic ultra-high-Q microresonator via the Kerr nonlinearity. The intrinsically broadband nature of parametric gain makes it possible to generate discrete comb modes over a 500-nm-wide span (approximately 70 THz) around 1,550 nm without relying on any external spectral broadening. Optical-heterodyne-based measurements reveal that cascaded parametric interactions give rise to an optical frequency comb, overcoming passive cavity dispersion. The uniformity of the mode spacing has been verified to within a relative experimental precision of 7.3 x 10(-18). In contrast to femtosecond mode-locked lasers, this work represents a step towards a monolithic optical frequency comb generator, allowing considerable reduction in size, complexity and power consumption. Moreover, the approach can operate at previously unattainable repetition rates, exceeding 100 GHz, which are useful in applications where access to individual comb modes is required, such as optical waveform synthesis, high capacity telecommunications or astrophysical spectrometer calibration.

Abstract:We show that octave-spanning Kerr frequency combs with improved spectral flatness of comb lines can be generated in dispersion-flattened microring resonators. The resonator is formed by a strip/slot hybrid waveguide, exhibiting a flat and low anomalous dispersion between two zero-dispersion wavelengths that are separated by one octave from near-infrared to mid-infrared. Such flattened dispersion profiles allow for the generation of mode-locked frequency combs, using relatively low pump power to obtain two-cycle cavity solitons on a chip, associated with the octave-spanning comb bandwidth. The wavelength dependence of the optical loss and of the coupling coefficient and thus wavelength dependent Q-factor are also considered. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Ultralow-noise microwaves are essential in a wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as metrology, radars, and communications. Here, we propose and demonstrate a scheme for generating an ultralow-noise microwave signal using a Brillouin optical frequency comb (OFC), which is based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering in combination with a frequency-shifted optical injection locking mechanism. The generated two intra-cavity Brillouin lasers are used as the intra-cavity pump for the eventual formation of the OFC and thus the microwave signal via the cascaded four-wave mixing process. Exploiting the cascaded narrowing effect in the Brillouin cavity assisted by the frequency-shifted optical injection locking, the proposed microwave signal source exhibits ultralow phase noise. Experimental results show that the phase noise of the microwave signal is equivalent to below −115 dBc/Hz for a 200-GHz carrier at 10 kHz offset. The system can work in stable operation without the need for any active feedback loop.

Abstract:It is a pivotal step in the measurement of carrier-envelope phase offset frequency in optical femtosecond frequency combs that a stable octave-spanning super-continuum spectrum is generated. In this paper, a home-made Yb:YCOB femtosecond laser pulse is led into a tapered fiber in which some nonlinear effects like self pulse modulation are generated and the four-wave mixing is made to broaden a spectrum to more than one octave-spanning. A Yb:YCOB oscillator emits 130 fs, 620 mW and 76.8 MHz laser pulses, the center wavelength at 1052 nm. Such pulses are focused into a tapered single-mode fiber, and then more than one octave-spanning supercontinuum from 550 nm to 1350 nm has been produced. The coupling efficiency can reach 52% when 323 mW SC laser pulses are detected. Based on the experimental result, a new optical comb will be built with the Yb:YCOB solid state laser as the light source.

Abstract:Laser frequency combs, sources with a spectrum consisting of hundred thousands evenly spaced narrow lines, have an exhilarating potential for new approaches to molecular spectroscopy and sensing in the mid-infrared region. The generation of such broadband coherent sources is presently under active exploration. Technical challenges have slowed down such developments. Identifying a versatile highly nonlinear medium for significantly broadening a mid-infrared comb spectrum remains challenging. Here we take a different approach to spectral broadening of mid-infrared frequency combs and investigate CMOS-compatible highly nonlinear dispersion-engineered silicon nanophotonic waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator chip. We record octave-spanning (1,500-3,300 nm) spectra with a coupled input pulse energy as low as 16 pJ. We demonstrate phase-coherent comb spectra broadened on a room-temperature-operating CMOS-compatible chip.

Abstract:A technique is presented for generating optical frequency combs centered at arbitrary wavelengths by use of cross-phase modulation (XPM) between a femtosecond pulse train and a cw laser beam by copropagating these signals through an optical fiber. We report results from use of this method to place a 90-MHz frequency comb on an iodine-stabilized Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm and on a frequency-doubled Nd:YVO4 laser at 532 nm. XPM is verified to be the comb-generating process, and the width of the frequency comb is measured and compared with theory. The spacing of the frequency comb is compared with the femtosecond source, and a frequency measurement with this comb is demonstrated. Abstract:An approach to generating microwave frequency combs (MFCs) with superior performance is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on an optically injected semiconductor laser (OISL). The OISL operates at the period-one (P1) oscillation state under proper injection conditions. A sinusoidal voltage signal is used to modulate the P1 state for the initial MFC generation, and then two optoelectronic feedback loops are introduced to enhance the performance of the MFC: a short-delay feedback loop is firstly applied to improve comb contrast based on Fourier domain mode locking (FDML), and a long-delay feedback loop is added to reduce the comb linewidth based on the self-injection-locking technique. In the proof-of-concept experiment, a K-band MFC (18-26 GHz) with a line spacing of 8.45 MHz is obtained, where a comb linewidth of approximately 500 Hz and a comb contrast over 45 dB are simultaneously achieved. Additionally, each comb component exhibits superior performance in terms of phase noise, all below -90 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, demonstrating an excellent coherence among these combs.
