Abstract:AbstractIntegrated photonic‐assisted instantaneous frequency measurements (IFMs) have been extensively explored and widely used in 5G/6G communications, navigation, automotive control, and radar systems. They offer significant advantages such as wide frequency, low power consumption, and immunity to electromagnetic interference compared to electrical solutions. As data traffic in high‐speed wireless communication systems and the operation bandwidth of advanced radar systems continue to grow, there is an urgent need for large instantaneous bandwidths and accurate frequency measurements to ensure signal integrity and efficient bandwidth utilization. However, achieving wide‐bandwidth and high‐precision measurements simultaneously with photonic IFMs remains challenging. Here, an integrated photonic IFM system based on a thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform is demonstrated that can dynamically identify signals with wide‐band frequency changes. The system incorporates a wide‐bandwidth Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a high‐Q Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI)‐coupled microring resonator (MRR) for double‐sideband suppressed‐carrier (DSB‐SC) modulation. Additionally, it includes dual‐stage frequency discriminator based on asymmetric MZIs (AMZIs) for both coarse wide‐band and accurate narrow‐band measurements. The proposed IFM system operates over a wide‐band frequency up to 67 GHz with a low root mean square (RMS) error of less than 123 MHz. This work opens up a path for high‐performance broadband microwave photonic applications using TFLN platform.

Abstract:A photonic approach to realizing instantaneous measurement of microwave frequency using a pair of fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based optical differentiators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this approach, a first-order and a second-order FBG-based optical differentiators are used to achieve a linear power ratio function with a uniform measurement resolution and improved system dynamic range. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. A frequency measurement range of 6.5-15 GHz with a measurement resolution of ±0.3 GHz at different input microwave power levels is realized. The dynamic range of the system is analyzed and an improvement of about 10 dB is obtained.

Abstract:A novel photonic technique for instantaneous frequency measurement of microwave signal based on phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed system, an optical carrier is modulated by a microwave signal with its frequency to be measured through a phase modulator. The phase-modulated optical signal is then converted to intensity-modulated signals in two independent paths using a dispersive media and a frequency discriminator respectively. Since the dependence of the received microwave power on the input microwave frequency in the two paths differs, the microwave power ratio between the two paths can be used to uniquely determine the microwave frequency. The major advantages of the approach lie in that only one laser source and the bias-free phase modulator is employed in the system, which improves the stability of the system. Experimental demonstrations of the frequency measurement based on the proposed approach are presented.

Abstract:A novel technique for instantaneous microwave frequency measurement using an optical phase modulator is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed system, a microwave signal with its frequency to be measured is modulated on two optical wavelengths at the phase modulator, with the phase-modulated optical signals sent to a dispersive element, and detected at two photo-detectors. Due to the chromatic dispersion of the dispersive element, the two microwave signals will experience different power fading, leading to different power versus frequency functions. A fixed relationship between the microwave frequency and the microwave powers is established. By measuring the microwave powers, the microwave frequency is estimated. Compared with the techniques using an intensity modulator, the proposed approach is simpler with less loss. Since no bias is needed the system has a better stability, which is highly expected for defense applications. Experimental verification is presented.

Abstract:A photonic approach to realizing instantaneous measurement of microwave frequency based on optical monitoring using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated. In the approach, a frequency-unknown microwave signal is modulated on an optical carrier in a Mach–Zehnder modulator biased at the minimum transmission point. After detecting the transmission and reflection optical powers at the output of the FBG, the microwave frequency can be determined according to the value of transmission-to-reflection power ratio, due to the fixed relationship between the microwave frequency and the power ratio. A proof-of-concept experiment has been performed, which demonstrates that a measurement resolution of ±0.08GHz over a 10GHz measurement bandwidth is achieved. The measurement performance in terms of resolution is better than previously reported results.

Abstract:A novel photonic approach to realize the instantaneous microwave frequency measurement with digital output is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Based on the power fading function of a double-sideband modulated microwave signal transmitting in a dispersive fiber channel, the microwave frequency to digital code mapping can be realized in a multi-channel system where each channel is configured with a predetermined amount of dispersion. The coding process involved here is similar to that of the photonic analog-to-digital conversion. The principle of the system is discussed in detail. An experiment is carried out, in which the frequency identification with 4-bit quantization levels in 17.5GHz measurement range is demonstrated. The measurement range and the resolution are discussed theoretically and numerically.

Abstract:A photonic-assisted instantaneous microwave frequency measurement (IFM) system is demonstrated with add-drop optical ring resonators (ORRs) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. By launching a double-sideband suppressed carrier modulated optical signal into the ring, a monotonous amplitude comparison function (ACF) irrespective of the amplitudes of both optical and RF signals is established to translate the RF frequency to the power ratio between the through and drop ports of the ring. Two experiments have been set up with two rings which have different Q values. Two 25µm radius ORRs with Q values of 3974 and 25833 are used to offer different measurement ranges and accuracies. In the experiments the ORR with low Q value has a large measurement range of 0.5–35GHz, and the other one with high Q value exhibits a high accuracy of 0.1GHz in the frequency range of 0.1–5GHz.

Abstract:The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a promising technology to simultaneously perform high-capacity communication and high-accuracy sensing with efficient resource utilization. Nevertheless, due to the severe mutual constraints between communication and sensing functions, the performance of previously reported ISAC demonstrations notably trails that of individual communication or sensing systems. In this work, an integrated LFM-QAM waveform is proposed and theoretically analyzed by combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Employing the proposed waveform and optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique, we experimentally implement a multi-channel photonic terahertz (THz)-ISAC wireless system operating at 275 GHz band, simultaneously achieving a communication data rate up to 120 Gbps and a range resolution as high as 2.5 mm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate beyond 100 Gbps wireless data rate and mm-scale resolution based on an integrated waveform in the THz region, revealing the potential of THz-ISAC performance.

Abstract:Fast and broadband spectrum sensing is an essential component in cognitive radio systems, intelligent transportation systems, electronic warfare systems, etc. However, traditional electronic-based solutions have a trade-off among the analysis bandwidth, temporal resolution, and real-time performance. In comparison, microwave photonic solutions can overcome the trade-off at the cost of frequency accuracy and resolution. Nevertheless, the reported microwave photonic solutions suffer from a very poor frequency resolution and impose extremely high requirements on hardware when the analysis bandwidth is close to or greater than 100 GHz. Here, we show a microwave photonic frequency measurement and time-frequency analysis method, which is implemented by dispersion-based frequency-to-time mapping and assisted by a specially designed V-shape linearly frequency-modulated signal and a duty-cycle-enabling technique. Compared with the reported microwave photonic solutions, the hardware requirements are greatly reduced when achieving similar performance conditions. Using a total dispersion of -6817 ps/nm and a V-shape linearly frequency-modulated signal with a bandwidth of 31.6 GHz and a duty cycle of 1/4, we achieve an ambiguity-free analysis bandwidth of 252.8 GHz, a corresponding temporal resolution of 13.75 ns and a frequency resolution of 1.1 GHz. The temporal resolution can be improved to 6.875 ns when the duty cycle is changed to 1/2, while the analysis bandwidth in this case is 126.4 GHz.

Abstract:Microwave photonics (MWP), harnessing the tremendous bandwidth of light to generate, process and measure wideband microwave signals, are poised to spark a new revolution for the information and communication fields. Within the past decade, new opportunity for MWP has emerged driven by the advances of integrated photonics. However, despite significant progress made in terms of integration level, a fully on-chip MWP functional system comprising all the necessary photonic and electronic components, is yet to be demonstrated. Here, we break the status quo and provide a complete on-chip solution for MWP system, by exploiting hybrid integration of indium phosphide, silicon photonics and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics platforms. Applying this hybrid integration methodology, a fully chip-based MWP microwave instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) system is experimentally demonstrated. The unprecedented integration level brings great promotion to the compactness, reliability, and performances of the overall MWP IFM system, including a wide frequency measurement range (2-34 GHz), ultralow estimation errors (10.85 MHz) and a fast response speed (0.3 ns). Furthermore, we deploy the chip-scale MWP IFM system into realistic application tasks, where diverse microwave signals with rapid-varying frequencies at X-band (8-12 GHz) are accurately identified in real-time. This demonstration marks a milestone for the development of integrated MWP, by providing the technology basis for the miniaturization and massive implementations of various MWP functional systems.

Abstract:A simple photonic technique for instantaneous microwave frequency measurement using an optical phase modulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and investigated. The FBG acts as tilt filters to offer different slopes of suppression for the optical carrier and the two sidebands when wavelengths are located at different positions of the FBG. A fixed relationship between the microwave frequencies and microwave powers is established. The microwave frequency can be estimated by measuring the microwave power differences. A measurement resolution of ±0.22 GHz over a 15 GHz measurement bandwidth is achieved. Experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:An integrated dynamic microwave instantaneous frequency measurement system with a record‐breaking operation bandwidth (ranging from 5 to 65 GHz) and low root‐mean‐square (RMS) error (∼300 MHz) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on lithium niobate on an insulator (LNOI) platform. This work paves a solid path for developing high‐performance millimeter wave photonic devices on the LNOI platform. The capability to identify the frequency of unknown microwave signals with an ultra‐wide measurement bandwidth is highly desirable in radar astronomy, satellite communication, and 6G networks. Compared to electronic solutions, the integrated photonic technology‐enabled dynamic instantaneous frequency measurement (DIFM) approach is attractive as it offers unique advantages, such as ultra‐wide frequency measurement bandwidth, high flexibility, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, so far the bandwidth of the reported DIFM systems based on integrated photonic technology is limited to below 30 GHz due to the finite bandwidth of electro‐optical modulators (EOMs), limiting their applications, particularly in the field of millimeter wave technology (30–300 GHz). Here, the first integrated dynamic microwave instantaneous frequency measurement system with a record‐breaking operation bandwidth (ranging from 5 to 65 GHz) and low root‐mean‐square (RMS) error (≈300 MHz) is presented on the lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) integrated photonic platform. This demonstration paves the way for high‐performance millimeter wave photonic integrated devices using the LNOI platform.

Abstract:Research on microwave signal measurement techniques is risen, driven by the expanding urgent demands of wireless communication, global positioning systems, remote sensing and 6G networks. In stark contrast with traditional electronic-based realization, the implementations of microwave signal measurement systems based on integrated compact photonic chip have exhibited distinct advantages in high operation bandwidth, light weight, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, although numerous integrated microwave photonic signal measurement systems have been reported, measurement bandwidth of the majority of them is still below 30 GHz due to the bandwidth limitation of electro-optical modulators (EOMs). Furthermore, previous studies often are more focused on the measurement of one single parameter (typically the frequency) of microwave signals, which has hindered their practical application in complex situations. Here, an integrated photonic microwave multi-parameter measurement system composed of microwave frequency measurement module and microwave phase amplitude measurement module based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform is reported. Utilizing this system, not only the ultra-high bandwidth (up to 60GHz) of microwave frequency, phase and amplitude measurement with low root-mean-squares errors (450MHz, 3.43° and 1.64% of the measurement for frequency, phase and amplitude, respectively), but also the time-domain reconstruction of sinusoidal microwave signals is achieved. This demonstration further broadens the application of integrated TFLN photonic devices in microwave signal measurement technology to address the bandwidth bottleneck of the ever-growing microwave networks in the future information society.

Abstract:This article reports a photonic-assisted instantaneous frequency measurement system based on a multi-group asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure, applicable in contemporary electronic countermeasure. Additionally, we introduce a novel method to obtain measurement results based on probability theory. Employing this method allows for a broader measurement range compared to traditional approaches utilizing amplify compare function without a deterioration in accuracy. Sufficient and systematic experimental results show that the measurement range can be at least 30 GHz and the mean error is 0.102 GHz using our proposed system and method. Moreover, we propose an optimization algorithm based on our method. By using this algorithm, we can adjust measurement range for proposed system with minimal asymmetrical MZI structures, ensuring no compromise in accuracy. In addition, the system is easy to realize hybrid integration or even monolithic integration due to the use of microwave photonics technology.

Abstract:A novel technique to perform ultra-wideband instantaneous frequency measurement in real-time based on differential photonic time-stretch is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Wideband frequency measurement is enabled by time-stretching the RF input signal via the dispersion compensating fiber. Distortion of the measured frequency signal caused by the non-uniformity of the spectrum of the pulsed laser source, which can be found in most of traditional time-stretch systems, is eliminated here by implementing a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (DOMZM) with complementary outputs and a balanced photodetector. Multi-tone tests with a 20 GHz frequency measurement range are conducted to verify the feasibility of the system of measuring multiple frequency signals. Followed by the proposed automated digital signal processing algorithms, our instantaneous frequency measurement system offers an ultra-fast sweep time of 10 ns, a frequency resolution of 660 MHz, and a measurement error within +/- 380 MHz. A larger frequency measurement range can be realized by implementing a DOMZM with a larger bandwidth.

Abstract:Instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) of microwave signals is a fundamental functionality for applications ranging from electronic warfare to biomedical technology. Photonic techniques, and nonlinear optical interactions in particular, have the potential to broaden the frequency measurement range beyond the limits of electronic IFM systems. The key lies in efficiently harnessing optical mixing in an integrated nonlinear platform, with low losses. In this work, we exploit the low loss of a 35 cm long, thick silicon waveguide, to efficiently harness Kerr nonlinearity, and demonstrate the first on-chip four-wave mixing (FWM) based IFM system. We achieve a large 40 GHz measurement bandwidth and record-low measurement error. Finally, we discuss the future prospect of integrating the whole IFM system on a silicon chip to enable the first reconfigurable, broadband IFM receiver with low-latency.
