Abstract:Propagation losses of surface plasmons in single silver nanowire waveguides were obtained by measuring light intensity at the end of a silver nanowire. Surface plasmons were excited directly by a tapered fiber. A typical propagation loss of 0.53 dB/εm was obtained.

Abstract:Plasmonic waveguides made of metal nanowires (NWs) possess significant potential for applications in integrated photonic and electronic devices. Energy loss induced by bending of a NW during light propagation is critical in affecting its performance as a plasmonic waveguide. We report the characterization of the pure bending loss in curved crystalline silver NW plasmonic waveguides by decoupling the energy loss caused by bending and propagation. The energy attenuation coefficiency due purely to bending was also determined, which exhibited an exponential relationship with the bending radius. Finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) methods were utilized for theoretical simulations, which matched the experimental results well.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate silver-nanowire-based plasmonic devices including the nanowaveguide, the nanocoupler, and the nanosplitter at optical communication wavelength of 1550 nm. The plasmon propagation loss in a 300-nm diameter silver nanowire is measured to be 0.3 dB/μm and the effective propagation length is 14.5 μm. This loss is comparatively lower than that at 980 nm. Two types of plasmonic functional devices based on the coupling between two silver nanowires, nanocouplers, and nanosplitters, are realized. For the nanocoupler, the experimental results show that the plasmonic modes can be efficiently coupled between two closely positioned nanowires. While for the nanosplitter, the plasmonic mode is split with a power ratio of 2.6:1. These demonstrations experimentally prove the feasibility of extending the operating wavelength of silver-nanowire-based plasmonic devices to current optical communication wavelength with a lower loss, which are thus important steps for potentially utilizing low-loss nanowire-based plasmonic components for photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We report the coupling of photons from an optical fiber taper to surface plasmon modes of silver nanowires. The coupling efficiency can be modulated by adjusting the cross angle and the polarization of the input light. The launch of propagating plasmons can be realized not only at ends of the nanowires but also at the midsection. In addition, we present the coupling of light into multiple nanowires from a single optical fiber taper simultaneously. Our demonstration offers an efficient method for optimizing plasmon coupling into nanoscale metallic waveguides and promotes the realization of highly integrated plasmonic devices.
Photothermal Modulation of Propagating Surface Plasmons on Silver Nanowires

Abstract:Nanoplasmonic devices have received much attention in recent years due to their ability to confine light beyond the diffraction limit. Manipulating the propagation of surface plasmons (SPs) is of vital importance for the creation of nanometer-scale integrated photonic devices. In this work we exploit the photothermal property of a silver nanowire (NW) to optically modulate the propagation of SPs on it. Under the excitation of a control laser beam, the rise of local temperature induced by the photothermal effect of silver NW results in the dramatic increase or decrease of the intensity of the transmitted SPs generated by a probe laser beam, depending on the Fabry-Perot resonance conditions of the SPs on the NW. The amplitude of the photothermal modulation depth is found to be strongly dependent on the focal position, polarization, and power of the control beam. The simulations reveal that the high modulation depth at the NW end is mainly caused by the additional heat generated by the propagating SPs on the NW. The analytical solutions for the transmissivity and modulation depth are presented. Both numerical simulations and theoretical analysis agree well with the experimental results. Our work provides not only a new kind of all-optical modulation method for the propagating SPs in ultracompact plasmonic devices, but also the basic understanding about the influence of environmental temperature on the propagating SPs.
Plasmon-Exciton Coupling Between Silver Nanowire and Two Quantum Dots

Abstract:We report the first experimental demonstration of plasmon-exciton coupling between silver nanowire (NW) and a pair of quantum dots (QDs). The resolving of single surface plasmons (SPs) generated in the NW-QD pair system is achieved. The accurate positions of the two QDs and NW ends are obtained by using a maximum likelihood single molecule localization method, and the separation distances between the two QDs range from microns to 200 nm within the diffraction limit. Parameters including the SP propagation length and the wire terminal reflectivity are experimentally determined and taken into account. The efficiency of plasmon generation due to the exciton-plasmon coupling is obtained for each QD.

Abstract:This paper presents a simulation study of the photon-to-plasmon coupling effect for the silver (Ag) nanoparticle-nanowire structure. The calculated results show that the in-coupling light efficiency depends on many factors, involving the gap between the nanoparticle and the nanowire, the size of the nanoparticle, the wavelength of the incident light and the dielectric environment. Under certain conditions, the in-coupling light efficiency of such a structure can be increased as compared with that of a single nanowire, suggesting that this nanoparticle-nanowire system can be used as an interesting structure for subwavelength waveguides, optical sensors and many other applications in the field of nanophotonics technology.

Abstract:We demonstrate the evanescent coupling of light from a silica nanofiber into a silver nanowire to excite propagating plasmons in the silver nanowire. The plasmons can be transferred back to light at the other end of the silver nanowire. The polarization property of the output light is also investigated.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-fiber hybrid photon-plasmon circuits by integrating Ag nanowires with optical fibers. Relying on near-field coupling, we realize a photon-to-plasmon conversion efficiency up to 92% in a fiber-based nanowire plasmonic probe. Around optical communication band, we assemble an all-fiber resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with Q-factor of 6 × 10(6) and extinction ratio up to 30 dB, respectively. Using the MZI, we demonstrate fiber-compatible plasmonic sensing with high sensitivity and low optical power.

Abstract:By placing a single Au nanoparticle on the surface of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire, we demonstrate strong coupling of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes in the nanoparticle and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the nanowire. For a 50-nm-diameter Au-nanosphere particle, strong coupling occurs when the nanowire diameter is between 300 and 600 nm, with a mode splitting up to 80 meV. Using a temperature-induced spectral shift of the resonance wavelength, we also observe the anticrossing behavior in the strongly coupled system. In addition, since the Au nanosphere has spherical symmetry, the supported LSPR mode can be selectively coupled with transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) WGMs in the nanowire. The ultracompact strong-coupling system shown here may provide a versatile platform for studying hybrid "photon-plasmon" nanolasers, nonlinear optical devices, and nanosensors.

Abstract:We report direct coupling of plasmonic and photonic nanowires using ultracompact near-field interaction. Photon-plasmon coupling efficiency up to 80% with coupling length down to the 200 nm level is achieved between individual Ag and ZnO nanowires. Hybrid nanophotonic components, including polarization splitters, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and microring cavities, are fabricated out of coupled Ag and ZnO nanowires. These components offer relatively low loss with subwavelength confinement; a hybrid nanowire microcavity exhibits a Q-factor of 520.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.

Abstract:By the far field excitation and measurement,propagation loss of wire's surface plasmon is experimentally investigated with structure of branched-routing silver nanowire.The experimental results show that the propagation loss depends on the exciting wavelength.The coefficient of propagation loss is measured as 0.115μm~(-1) at 632.8 nm and 0.0923μm~(-1) at 780 nm.The propagation loss is smaller at longer wavelength, that is,SPP can propagate further at long-wavelength laser exciting.The measurement contributes to optimizing plasmonic devices based on silver nanowire waveguides.

Abstract:The optical response in visible wavelengths of a single-chain of elliptical silver nanowires is investigated for different separation distances and illumination directions. The efficient and simple method, surface integral equation, is used to characterize the above arrays. The results show that the occurrence and magnitude of plasmon resonances as well as the field intensity are depended on these parameters. Strong field enhancement can be observed in the gap between nanowires of the single chain.

Abstract:Experiments and numerical simulations demonstrate that when a silver nanowire is placed on a dielectric multilayer, but not the commonly used bare glass slide, the effective refractive index of the propagating surface plasmons along the silver nanowire can be controlled. Furthermore, by increasing the thickness of the top dielectric layer, longer wavelength light can also propagate along a very thin silver nanowire. In the experiment, the diameter of the silver nanowire could be as thin as 70 nm, with the incident wavelength as long as 640 nm. The principle of this control is analysed from the existence of a photonic band gap and the Bloch surface wave with this dielectric multilayer substrate.

Abstract:Coupling of higher-order-mode light into a single sliver nanowire and the degree of the coupling can be controlled by adjusting the light polarization, showing that nanowire waveguide has no request on the spatial mode of the input light. Photons with different orbital angular momentums (OAM) are used to excite surface plasmons of silver nanowires. The experiment indicates the propagating modes of surface plasmons in nanowires were not the OAM eignenstates.

Abstract:The antenna-mediated coupling of light into Ag nanowire is investigated both in experiments and simulations. The coupling efficiency is strongly depended on the architecture of the metallic particles related to the Ag nanowire. Different incident angles of excitation laser are also tested for the maximum coupling effiecieny. The results demonstrate three-arm triangle antenna group fabricated at the incident end can effectively enhance the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) coupling and propagation. The SPP resonance and the Fabry-Perot cavity theory are used to explain the plasmon enhancement and propagation phenomena. The suggested structure can be served as an enhanced plasmonic waveguide for the nanophotonic and plasmonic circuits in the future.

Abstract:A branched nanowire with two input terminals and one output terminal can serve as a modulator. The light emission from the output resulting from illumination of one input can be modulated by illumination at the other input. The physical mechanism underlying the modulation is constructive or destructive interference of the nanowire plasmons supported by the structure.
