Abstract:Propagation losses of surface plasmons in single silver nanowire waveguides were obtained by measuring light intensity at the end of a silver nanowire. Surface plasmons were excited directly by a tapered fiber. A typical propagation loss of 0.53 dB/εm was obtained.

Abstract:Plasmonic waveguides made of metal nanowires (NWs) possess significant potential for applications in integrated photonic and electronic devices. Energy loss induced by bending of a NW during light propagation is critical in affecting its performance as a plasmonic waveguide. We report the characterization of the pure bending loss in curved crystalline silver NW plasmonic waveguides by decoupling the energy loss caused by bending and propagation. The energy attenuation coefficiency due purely to bending was also determined, which exhibited an exponential relationship with the bending radius. Finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) methods were utilized for theoretical simulations, which matched the experimental results well.

Abstract:We report direct measurement of propagation losses in single gold nanowires around visible and near-infrared bands. By directly measuring the propagation-distance-dependent output of the nanowire via fiber-taper-assistant near-field-coupling technique, we obtain a typical loss of 0.89dB/µm at 785-nm wavelength in a 210-nm-diameter gold nanowire. We have also investigated the dependences of propagation losses on the nanowire diameter and light wavelength, and shown that the propagation loss is averagely increased with decreasing diameter and wavelength. Our results from direct measurements offer an unambiguous loss information of gold nanowires, as well as a helpful reference for gold-nanowire-based plasmonic circuits and devices.
Experimental Demonstration of Plasmon Propagation, Coupling, and Splitting in Silver Nanowire at 1550-nm Wavelength

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate silver-nanowire-based plasmonic devices including the nanowaveguide, the nanocoupler, and the nanosplitter at optical communication wavelength of 1550 nm. The plasmon propagation loss in a 300-nm diameter silver nanowire is measured to be 0.3 dB/μm and the effective propagation length is 14.5 μm. This loss is comparatively lower than that at 980 nm. Two types of plasmonic functional devices based on the coupling between two silver nanowires, nanocouplers, and nanosplitters, are realized. For the nanocoupler, the experimental results show that the plasmonic modes can be efficiently coupled between two closely positioned nanowires. While for the nanosplitter, the plasmonic mode is split with a power ratio of 2.6:1. These demonstrations experimentally prove the feasibility of extending the operating wavelength of silver-nanowire-based plasmonic devices to current optical communication wavelength with a lower loss, which are thus important steps for potentially utilizing low-loss nanowire-based plasmonic components for photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Nanoplasmonic devices have received much attention in recent years due to their ability to confine light beyond the diffraction limit. Manipulating the propagation of surface plasmons (SPs) is of vital importance for the creation of nanometer-scale integrated photonic devices. In this work we exploit the photothermal property of a silver nanowire (NW) to optically modulate the propagation of SPs on it. Under the excitation of a control laser beam, the rise of local temperature induced by the photothermal effect of silver NW results in the dramatic increase or decrease of the intensity of the transmitted SPs generated by a probe laser beam, depending on the Fabry-Perot resonance conditions of the SPs on the NW. The amplitude of the photothermal modulation depth is found to be strongly dependent on the focal position, polarization, and power of the control beam. The simulations reveal that the high modulation depth at the NW end is mainly caused by the additional heat generated by the propagating SPs on the NW. The analytical solutions for the transmissivity and modulation depth are presented. Both numerical simulations and theoretical analysis agree well with the experimental results. Our work provides not only a new kind of all-optical modulation method for the propagating SPs in ultracompact plasmonic devices, but also the basic understanding about the influence of environmental temperature on the propagating SPs.
Quantum Yield of Single Surface Plasmons Generated by a Quantum Dot Coupled with a Silver Nanowire

Abstract:The interactions between surface plasmons (SPs) in metal nanostructures and excitons in quantum emitters (QEs) lead to many interesting phenomena and potential applications that are strongly dependent on the quantum yield of SPs. The difficulty in distinguishing all the possible exciton recombination channels hinders the experimental determination of SP quantum yield. Here, we experimentally measured for the first time the quantum yield of single SPs generated by the exciton plasmon coupling in a system composed of a single quantum dot and a silver nanowire (NW). By utilizing the SP guiding property of the NW, the decay rates of all the exciton recombination channels, i.e., direct free space radiation channel, SP generation channel, and nonradiative damping channel, are quantitatively obtained. It is determined that the optimum emitter-NW coupling distance for the largest SP quantum yield is about 10 nm, resulting from the different distance-dependent decay rates of the three channels. These results are important for manipulating the coupling between plasmonic nanostructures and QEs and developing on-chip quantum plasmonic devices for potential nanophotonic and quantum information applications.

Abstract:Electron microscopy techniques such as electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) facilitate the spatio-spectral characterization of plasmonic nanostructures. In this work, a time-dependent perspective is presented, which significantly enhances the utility of EELS. Specifically, silver nanowires offer the material and geometric features for various high-quality plasmonic excitations. This provides an ideal illustrative system for combined experimental-theoretical analyses of the different plasmonic excitations and their real-time dynamics. It is demonstrated how the plasmonic excitations propagating inside the wire repeatedly interact with the swift electrons in an EELS configuration. In addition, the role of azimuthal modes, often overlooked for very thin wires, is observed and analyzed in both the energy-loss spectrum and the dynamical perspective. Such a complete understanding of the interaction of electrons and plasmonic excitation is key for the design of efficient plasmonic sensors, the study of hot electron dynamics in metals, and applications in the context of electron quantum optics, where full control of the spatial and temporal characteristics of the fields at the nanometer and femtosecond scales is highly desirable.

Abstract:Leaky plasmon modes (LPMs) in metal nanowires (NWs), which combine the physical characteristic of both "plasmonics" and "leaky radiation", present distinguished performances in terms of guiding and radiating light. In contrast to traditional light-guiding in metal NWs with one single LPM, multiple LPMs are crucial for advanced uses such as augmenting data transmission channels, enhancing sensing performance, manipulating polarization and converting mode. Here, we demonstrate experimentally the control over multiple LPMs in pentagonal silver NWs. By combining far-field real-space imaging and leakage radiation microscopy, the three typical LPMs with fields mainly concentrating in corners surrounded by air are specifically identified. By manipulating excitation wavelengths and NW diameters, the number of the excited LPMs can be controlled. These findings reveal the physics of LPMs in silver NWs, thereby paving the way towards applying the high-order leaky modes in silver NWs for photonic integrated circuits, nanoscale confinement, plasmonic sensing, QD-nanowire coupling, etc.
Plasmonic Wave Propagation in Silver Nanowires: Guiding Modes or Not?

Abstract:Propagation modes and single-guiding-mode conditions of one-dimensional silver nanowires based surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguides versus the operating wavelength (500-2000 nm) are investigated. For silver nanowires immersed in a SiO(2) matrix, both short-range SPP (SRSPP)-like modes and long-range SPP (LRSPP)-like modes can be guided. However, only the LRSPP-like modes have cutoff radii. For silver nanowires on a SiO(2) substrate, the LRSPP-like modes cannot be supported due to asymmetry. While for the SRSPP-like guiding mode, it has a cutoff radius for wavelength longer than 615 nm. For wavelength shorter than 615 nm, there is no cutoff radius for the guiding modes due to the appearance of the interface modes and thus the single-guiding-mode operation is always satisfied.

Abstract:Single-mode plasmonic waveguiding properties of metal nanowires with dielectric substrates are investigated using a finite-element method. Au and Ag are selected as plasmonic materials for nanowire waveguides with diameters down to 5-nm-level. Typical dielectric materials with relatively low to high refractive indices, including magnesium fluoride (MgF2), silica (SiO2), indium tin oxide (ITO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2), are used as supporting substrates. Basic waveguiding properties, including propagation constants, power distributions, effective mode areas, propagation distances and losses are obtained at the typical plasmonic resonance wavelength of 660 nm. Compared to that of a freestanding nanowire, the mode area of a substrate-supported nanowire could be much smaller while maintaining an acceptable propagation length. For example, the mode area and propagation length of a 100-nm-diameter Ag nanowire with a MgF2 substrate are about 0.004 μm2 and 3.4 μm, respectively. The dependences of waveguiding properties on geometric and material parameters of the nanowire-substrate system are also provided. Our results may provide valuable references for waveguiding dielectric-supported metal nanowires for practical applications.

Abstract:We study the surface plasmon modes in a silver double-nanowire system by employing the eigenmode analysis approach based on the finite element method. Calculated dispersion relations, surface charge distributions, field patterns and propagation lengths of ten lowest energy plasmon modes in the system are presented. These ten modes are categorized into three groups because they are found to originate from the monopole-monopole, dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole hybridizations between the two wires, respectively. Interestingly, in addition to the well studied gap mode (mode 1), the other mode from group 1 which is a symmetrically coupled charge mode (mode 2) is found to have a larger group velocity and a longer propagation length than mode 1, suggesting mode 2 to be another potential signal transporter for plasmonic circuits. Scenarios to efficiently excite (inject) group 1 modes in the two-wire system and also to convert mode 2 (mode 1) to mode 1 (mode 2) are demonstrated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.
Optical properties of a single-chain of elliptical silver nanowires

Abstract:The optical response in visible wavelengths of a single-chain of elliptical silver nanowires is investigated for different separation distances and illumination directions. The efficient and simple method, surface integral equation, is used to characterize the above arrays. The results show that the occurrence and magnitude of plasmon resonances as well as the field intensity are depended on these parameters. Strong field enhancement can be observed in the gap between nanowires of the single chain.

Abstract:The surface integral equation (SIE) method is utilized to characterize plasmonic waveguide made of two parallel chains of silver nanowires with radius of 25nm fed by a V-shaped funnel at a working wavelength of 600nm. The efficiency of energy transport along the waveguide due to surface plasmonic coupling is investigated for different dimensions and shapes. The opening angle of the V-shaped funnel region for optimum light capturing is included in the investigation as well. Abstract:We demonstrate surface plasmon (SP) excitation in silver nanowires directly deposited on the emission facet of a laser diode (LD) chip. Evident light output from the silver nanowires is observed. The output is linear-polarized and is strongly dependent on the nanowire orientation. SP excitation at the central part of a silver nanowire is also observed. The possibility of direct SP excitation on an LD chip may open opportunities for realizing plasmonic and photonic circuits or components with high compactness.

Abstract:We report the first experimental demonstration of plasmon-exciton coupling between silver nanowire (NW) and a pair of quantum dots (QDs). The resolving of single surface plasmons (SPs) generated in the NW-QD pair system is achieved. The accurate positions of the two QDs and NW ends are obtained by using a maximum likelihood single molecule localization method, and the separation distances between the two QDs range from microns to 200 nm within the diffraction limit. Parameters including the SP propagation length and the wire terminal reflectivity are experimentally determined and taken into account. The efficiency of plasmon generation due to the exciton-plasmon coupling is obtained for each QD.

Abstract:In this paper, surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes on silver nanowire (AgNW), with different field symmetric, are studied by different near field methods, respectively. In the experiment, the excitation and detection of SPPs are performed by two probes of near field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) simultaneously, which realizes the study of SPPs in complete near field. By controlling the experimental conditions, two of the fundamental SPP modes are detected separately and their intensity distributions on AgNW are given by the NSOM images. In the discussion, creeping wave (CW) is introduced to analyze the experimental results, which improves the coincidence of the experimental results and the theoretical calculations. A detailed characterization of SPPs modes in near field, which gives a further insight into optical properties of AgNW, will benefit integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:The propagation performances of a double-chain splitter waveguide consists of coupled silver nanowires are investigated for different structures. We show that the efficiency of energy transport along the waveguide and split at a Y-junction due to surface plasmonic coupling is significantly depends on the parameters chosen for the structure such as radius of nanowire, opening angle of splitter and illuminating wavelength. The optimal structure for efficiently guiding and splitting the light at 600 nm is discussed in detail.
