Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a high data rate visible light communication system by employing 450-nm Gallium Nitride laser diode. An achievable information rate of 10.23 Gbps over a 1.2m indoor free space transmission with normalized generalized mutual information above 0.92 is reported. Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a high-speed visible light communication system employing a 520-nm green laser diode. A recorded data rate of 15.004 Gbps is reported by utilizing an adaptive bit-loading discrete multitone (DMT) modulation scheme with a measured bit error ratio (BER) of $3.724 \times 10^{-3}$, which satisfies the forward-error-correction (FEC) criteria. The results suggest the system has a high spectral efficiency of 5.456 bit/s/Hz at 2.75 GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising technology for next-generation high-speed optical wireless data links. Among various transmitters, GaN-based superluminescent diodes (SLDs) show interesting characteristics, including a large modulation bandwidth, droop free and low speckle noise, which makes them attractive for VLC applications. In this work, we design and fabricate a blue-emitting SLD utilizing tilted facet configuration. Using SLD as the light source, a VLC system is experimentally demonstrated. A record data rate of 4.57 gigabit per second (Gbps) is achieved with adaptive bit-loading discrete multiple tone (DMT) modulation, while the highest modulation format reaches 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The corresponding bit error rate (BER) is ~3.5 × 10−3, which is below the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully packaged 10-λ WDM integrated module based on visible light laser diodes. A data-rate of 110.79Gbps can be achieved in 17.5cm free-space and 1.5m fiber link. The experimental results show the potential applications in high-speed indoor access networks and data center interconnect.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) based on laser diodes demonstrates great potential for high data rate maritime, terrestrial, and aerial wireless data links. Here, we design and fabricate high-speed blue laser diodes (LDs) grown on c -plane gallium nitride (GaN) substrate. This was achieved through active region design and miniaturization toward a narrow ridge waveguide, short cavity length, and single longitudinal mode Fabry - Perot laser diode. The fabricated mini-LD has a low threshold current of 31 mA and slope efficiency of 1.02 W/A. A record modulation bandwidth of 5.9 GHz ( - 3 dB ) was measured from the mini-LD. Using the developed mini-LD as a transmitter, the VLC link exhibits a high data transmission rate of 20.06 Gbps adopting the bit and power loading discrete multitone (DMT) modulation technique. The corresponding bit error rate is 0.003, satisfying the forward error correction standard. The demonstrated GaN-based mini-LD has significantly enhanced data transmission rates, paving the path for energy -efficient VLC systems and integrated photonics in the visible regime. Abstract:The free-space optical communication of high-speed 120 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) QPSK signals is demonstrated in an outdoor atmospheric channel with a distance of about 1 km. A pair of optical terminal systems with the capture and tracking functions is used to establish the atmospheric channel. The power fluctuation through the atmospheric turbulence agrees well with the exponentiated Weibull distribution. At the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3), the required receiving powers for the three WDM channels are similar, which are all <-15.4 dBm.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), combining wireless communication with white lighting, has many advantages. It is free of electromagnetic interference, is rich in spectrum resources, and has a gigabit-per-second (Gbps) data rate. Laser diodes (LDs) are emerging as promising light sources for high-speed VLC communication due to their high modulation bandwidth. In this paper, we demonstrate a red/green/blue (R/G/B) LDs based VLC system with a recorded data rate of 46.41 Gbps, employing discrete multitone (DMT) and adaptive bit-loading technology to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE). The emission characteristics and transmission performance of R/G/B-LDs are discussed. The optimal data rates of R/G/B-LDs channels are 17.168/14.652/14.590 Gbps, respectively. The bit-error-ratio (BER) of each channel satisfies the 7% forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold (3.8×10-3) and greatly approaches the channel Shannon limit.

Abstract:III-nitride superluminescent diode (SLD) has emerged as a promising light emitter in visible light communication systems. Abstract:The escalating demand for greater transmission capacities in the forthcoming 6 G communication landscapes necessitates the investigation of upper segments of the electromagnetic spectrum by both academic institutions and the industrial sector. This effort aims to circumvent the impending spectrum resource limitations. Against this backdrop, laser diodes (LDs) emerge as a critical technology for high-speed visible light communication (VLC), owing to their significant modulation bandwidth potential. This paper details what we believe to be a novel visible light laser communication (VLLC) system powered by red/green/blue (RGB) tricolor laser diodes. It highlights a successful 100-meter free-space transmission achieved through a time domain hybrid huffman coding (TDHHC) technique. The system's performance review unveiled impressive data transmission rates for the red, green, and blue laser diodes channels at 16.852 Gbps, 14.442 Gbps, and 15.755 Gbps, respectively, culminating in a cumulative transmission rate of 47.049 Gbps while maintaining a bit error rate (BER) beneath the stringent threshold of 3.8E-3, mandated by 7% hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) standards. As far as we known, this marks the highest data rate documented in a long-distance tricolor VLLC system.

Abstract:There exists a demand for radiation-safe and high-speed communication systems available to public users in the fifth-generation (5G) communication and beyond. In this regard, visible light communication (VLC) stands out offering multi-Gigabit-per-second (Gbit/s) data transmission, energy efficiency and illumination, while being free from electromagnetic interference. Here, we report a high-speed VLC link by using a 443-nm GaN-based superluminescent diode (SLD) and bit-loading discrete-multiple-tone (DMT) modulation. Analysis of the device characteristics and modulation parameters shows a feasible bit allocation of up to 256-QAM while obtaining up to 3.8 Gbit/s data rate. These results, together with the electro-optical properties of the SLD such as being droop-free, speckle-free and high-power, make it an attractive solution for the future of public communications and smart lighting, while complementing traditional fiber-based and millimeter-wave technology.

Abstract:Advanced multi-level modulation formats have shown their great potential in high-speed and high-spectral-efficiency optical communications. Using quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format for free-space optical (FSO) communication, a bidirectional high-speed FSO transmission link with the bit rates of up to 40 Gbit/s over ∼1 km, between two buildings in the campus of Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, China, is experimentally demonstrated cooperating by capture and tracking systems. The eye-diagrams and constellation diagrams of the transmitted QPSK signals are clearly observed. By comparing the bit error rate (BER) curves before and after transmission, one can find that the receiving powers are both less than −16.5 dBm for the forward and backward transmissions of the bidirectional 20, 30, and 40 Gbit/s FSO links, and their power penalties due to the phase fluctuation of the atmospheric channel are both less than 2.6 dB, at the BER of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the high-speed free-space optical (FSO) transmission over 1 km using 20 Gbit/s advanced coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals. The constellation diagram and the bit error rate (BER) are measured. The receiving sensitivity of the FSO transmission is about-23.9 dBm at the BER of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:This paper gives an experimental demonstration of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) visible light communication (VLC) using a single 80 μm gallium nitride (GaN) based micro-light-emitting diode (micro-LED). This device shows a 3-dB electrical-to-optical modulation bandwidth of 92.7 MHz. IEEE 802.11ac modulation scheme with 80 MHz bandwidth, as an entry level of the fifth generation of Wi-Fi, was employed to use the micro-LED bandwidth efficiently. These practical techniques were successfully utilized to achieve a demonstration of line-of-sight (LOS) VLC at a speed of 433 Mbps and a bit error rate (BER) of 10−5 with a free space transmit distance 3.6 m. Besides this, we demonstrated directed NLOS VLC links based on mirror reflections with a data rate of 433 Mbps and a BER of 10−4. For non-directed NLOS VLC using a print paper as the reflection material, 16 QAM, 195 Mbps data rate, and a BER of 10−5 were achieved.
