Abstract:Integrated optical tunable filters are key components for a wide spectrum of applications, including optical communications and interconnects, spectral analysis, and tunable light sources, among others. Compared with their thermo-optic counterparts, integrated acousto-optic (AO) tunable filters provide a unique approach to achieve superior performance, including ultrawide continuous tuning ranges of hundreds of nm, low power consumption of sub-mW and fast tuning speed of sub-mu s. Based on suspended one-dimensional (1D) AO waveguides in the collinear configuration, we propose and theoretically investigate an innovative family of integrated AO tunable filters (AOTFs) on thin-film lithium niobate. The AO waveguides perform as tunable wavelength-selective narrow-band polarization rotators, where highly efficient conversion between co-propagating TE0 and TM0 modes is enabled by the torsional acoustic A1 mode, which can be selectively excited by a novel antisymmetric wavefront interdigital transducer. Furthermore, we systematically and quantitatively explore the possibilities of exciting modulated acousticwaves, which contain multiple frequency components, along the AOwaveguide to achieve independently reconfigurable multi-band operations, with tunable time-variant spectral shapes. By incorporating a complete set of ultrawide-band polarization-handling components, we have proposed and theoretically investigated several representative monolithic AOTF configurations, featuring different arrangements of single or cascaded identical AO waveguides. One of the present AOTF designs exhibits a theoretical linewidth of similar to 8 nm (similar to 4 nm), a sidelobe suppression ratio of similar to 75 dB, and theoretically no excess loss at the center wavelength of 1550 nm (1310 nm), with an ultrawide tuning range of 1.25-1.65 mu m (from O-band to L-band), a fast tuning speed of 0.14 mu s, and a low power consumption of a few mW. Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is a new photonic integrated platform that provides high optical confinement and retains the inherent excellent properties of lithium niobate (LN). Tunable filters are one of the indispensable devices for integrated optics. Here we design and fabricate a thermo-optic (TO) tunable optical filter using two cascaded racetrack microring resonators (MRRs) based on LNOI. The filter shows a narrow and flat top passband with intra band ripple less than 0.3 dB, 3 dB bandwidth of 4.8 GHz and out-of-band rejection of about 35 dB. The insertion loss of the filter is about -14 dB, including grating coupling loss about -6.5 dB and on-chip loss less than -1 dB. The heating power for center wavelength shift of the filter is about 89.4 mW per free spectral range (FSR). Relevant applications of such filters include optical information processing and microwave photonics.

Abstract:Tunable optical filter at the chip scale plays a crucial role in fulfilling the need for the reconfigurability in channel routing, optical switching, and wavelength division multiplexing systems. In this letter, we propose a tunable double notch filter on thin-film lithium niobate using dual micro-ring architecture. This unique integrated filter is essential for complex photonic integrated circuits, along with multiple channels and various frequency spacing. With only one loaded voltage, the device demonstrates a wide frequency spacing tunability from 16.1 GHz to 89.9 GHz by reversely tunning the resonances of the two micro-rings while the center wavelength between the two resonances remains unaltered. Moreover, by utilizing the pronounced electro-optic properties of lithium niobate, associated with the tight light confinement nanophotonic waveguides, the device demonstrates a spacing tunability of 0.82 GHz/V and a contrast of 10~16 dB. In addition, the device has an ultracompact footprint of 0.0248 mm2.

Abstract:We propose a long-period grating assisted directional coupler in lithium niobate (LN) for the realization of electro-optic tunable mode filtering functionality. Our typical device, fabricated with the annealed proton-exchange process and designed for filtering out the fundamental mode in a two-mode LN waveguide, achieves a maximum mode extinction ratio of 29 dB at 1551.7 nm wavelength and a -20 dB bandwidth of ~2.5 nm with an electrical wavelength tuning sensitivity of 0.182 nm/V.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an electrically controlled tunable narrowband filter based on a thin-film lithium niobate two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. The filter incorporates a photonic crystal microcavity structure within the straight waveguide, enabling electronic tuning of the transmitted wavelength through added electrode structures. The optimized microcavity filter design achieves a balance between high transmission rate and quality factor, with a transmission center wavelength of 1 551.6 nm, peak transmission rate of 96.1%, and quality factor of 5 054. Moreover, the filter can shift the central wavelength of the transmission spectrum by applying voltage to the electrodes, with a tuning sensitivity of 13.8 pm/V. The proposed tunable filter adopts a simple-to-fabricate air-hole structure and boasts a compact size (length: 11.57 μm, width: 5.27 μm, area: 60.97 μm 2 ), making it highly suitable for large-scale integration. These features make the filter promising for broad applications in the fields of photonic integration and optical communication.

Abstract:In signal processing of the growing semaphore, a microwave photonic filter (MPF) is capable of dealing with high-frequency signals, offering the advantages of high bandwidth, easy tuning, and more. This paper presents an efficient tunable microwave photonic filter that features a wideband tuning capability and narrow-band filtering effect based on the lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) material platform. A multi-mode waveguide race-track type microring resonator has been designed, along with a thermal electrode that utilizes the thermo-optical effect of lithium niobate to adjust the microring resonator. The packaged device has been tested, with a wideband tunable range of 4.7~38.2 GHz achieved. This allows for cross-band continuous tuning across the C-band to Ka-band range. When supplied with 29.1 mW of electric power, the thermal tuning efficiency reaches 9.2 pm/mW, enabling high-frequency tuning of up to 38.2 GHz. The filter possesses a high resolution, exhibiting a 3 dB bandwidth of 662 MHz.

Abstract:A tunable dual-wavelength filter is experimentally demonstrated in domain-engineered lithium niobate. Application of an electric field on the y-surfaces of the sample results in the optical axes rotating clockwise and anticlockwise, which makes selective polarization rotation. The quasi phase-matching wavelengths could be adjusted through suitable domain design. A unique dual valley spectrum is obtained in a periodically poled lithium niobate structure with a central defect if the sample is placed between two parallel polarizers. The expected bandwidth could be varied from ∼1 nm to ∼40 nm. Moreover, both the spectral response and group delay dispersion could be engineered.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a tunable optical filter with a high Q factor based on photonic crystal technology, achieving a Q factor of 442.85 using thin film lithium niobate technology. By proportionally adjusting the dimensions of the unit structure, this filter enables coarse tuning across the 1520–1570 nm range (C band). Furthermore, by utilizing the thermo-optic effect of lithium niobate, we can achieve fine-tuning of the optical filter within a temperature range of 300 K to 600 K, allowing for a center wavelength tuning capability of up to 3.7 nm. This design not only enhances the filter's performance but also broadens its potential applications in optical communication and optical signal processing.

Abstract:A suspended thin-film lithium-niobate-on-insulator nano-waveguide (NanoLN) is designed, and tunable mid-infrared dispersivewave generation of high-efficiency and broadband is numerically studied on this designed platform. By hollowing out the silicon dioxide substrate between the NanoLN core and silicon wafer, the loss issue induced by mode leaking at mid-infrared region is eliminated. The second zero-dispersion wavelength of the suspended NanoLN is tailored to locate around 2 mu m wavelength, so that mode-locked fiber laser pump sources in this waveband can be conveniently leveraged to generate dispersive wave beyond 3 mu mwavelength. We show that dispersive wave at 3.16 mu m with high conversion efficiency up to 36.26% and bandwidth (at 10 dB level) of similar to 471 nm can be achieved at the pump pulse energy of 0.23 nJ. The central wavelength of the dispersive wave can be flexibly tuned up to 5 mu m with a maximum 10 dB bandwidth of similar to 2 mu m by lithographic control of the waveguide geometry, which is naturally at the expense of degraded conversion efficiency. Our results show the suspended NanoLN can provide a versatile chip-scale platform for cost-effective mid-infrared targetable, broadband, and coherent sources generation. Using fiber laser pump sources gives the advantages of compactness, free-maintenance, and long-term stability, which suit field applications.

Abstract:We propose a tunable filter with cascaded compound gratings based on lithium niobate (LN). Herein, the reflectivity spectrum with a narrow-band and flat-top line shape can be obtained by using the quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) and selecting the appropriate grating offset. Simultaneously, we apply a voltage on LN to modulate the refractive index to achieve wavelength tunability. The demonstrated structure is sensitive to the incident angle, which can be used for angle sensing. Interestingly, an accidental BIC occurs by varying the length of the Fabry–Perot cavity to achieve phase shift conditions between the two grating layers. The presented tunable flat-top filter structure has promising applications in integrated sensing and communication.

Abstract:Several applications in modern photonics require compact on-chip optical filters with a tailored spectral response. However, achieving sub-nanometric bandwidths and high extinction ratios is particularly challenging, especially in low-footprint device formats. Phase shifted Bragg gratings implemented by sidewall modulation of photonic nanowire waveguides are a good solution for on-chip narrowband operation with reasonable requirements in fabrication and scalability. In this work we report on their implementation and optimization in thin film lithium niobate, a photonic platform that affords reconfigurability by exploiting electrooptic effects. The phase-shifted Bragg grating filters have a footprint smaller than 1 {\mu}m x 1mm and operate at telecom wavelengths, featuring extinction ratios up to 25 dB. We demonstrate transmission bandwidths as narrow as 14.4 pm ($Q = 1.1$ x $10^5$) and 8.8 pm ($Q = 1.76$ x $10^5$) in critically coupled structures and multi-wavelength Fabry-Perot configurations, respectively, in full agreement with theoretical predictions. Moreover, by taking advantage of the strong electrooptic effect in lithium niobate, in combination with the tight light confinement of nanophotonic wires and the ultranarrow spectral resonances of optimized grating structures, we demonstrate a tunability of 25.1pm/V and a record modulation of the filter transmission amounting to 1.72 dB/V at CMOS voltages. The results pave the way for reconfigurable narrowband photonic filters in lithium niobate with small footprint and low consumption, to be exploited towards on-chip quantum and nonlinear optics, as well as optical sensing and microwave photonics.

Abstract:A high-performance optical filter is proposed and realized with multimode waveguide grating (MWG) and two-mode multiplexers on the x-cut lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The present optical filter is designed appropriately to avoid material anisotropy as well as mode hybridness, and has a low excess loss of 0.05 dB and a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR) of 32 dB in theory with Gaussian apodization. The fabricated filters show a box-like response with 1-dB bandwidth of 6-23 nm, excess loss of -0.15 dB, sidelobe suppression ratio of >26 dB. The device performance is further improved with a sidelobe suppression ratio as high as 48 dB and a low excess loss of -0.25 dB by cascading two identical MWGs.(c) 2022 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:Channel-select filtering technology is a very promising solution for realizing reconfigurable demultiplexing components required in a flexible coarse wavelength-division multiplexing system. Here, we propose and demonstrate an electro-optic tunable broadband filter based on an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed on lithium niobate for this application. The counter-tapered directional coupler is introduced to replace the conventional one formed with uniform waveguides so that a splitting ratio of 50%:50% is much easier to be realized over a wide wavelength range and, hence, increase bandwidth of the filter. In addition, to reduce the bending loss in the long-wavelength region, the waveguide width and the height of the involved S-bend waveguides are optimized experimentally. Our fabricated filter, which has a total length of similar to 30 mm, exhibits an extinction ratio of similar to 15 dB and a wide tuning range of >40 nm with an electrical wavelength tuning sensitivity of similar to 4.5 nm/V. Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-narrow-band optical filter based on a hybrid-microsphere consisting of a coated SiO2 microsphere. As compared to the SiO2 microsphere, the hybrid-microsphere produces a quality factor of >10(8), a transmission spectrum bandwidth of <1 pm, and an increased side-mode suppression ratio. The microsphere surface roughness and whispering gallery mode (WGM) transmission spectra are measured experimentally. A 0.01 nm bandwidth, single-wavelength fiber laser output is achieved with a tunable wavelength, using the SiO2 microsphere as the mode selector. The optical field distribution and WGM transmission spectrum of the hybrid-microsphere with different coating parameters are theoretically investigated by the finite-difference time-domain method.

Abstract:In order to accomplish tunable filter with broad continuous tuning range,a design of multiple-stage tunable filters utilizing the electrooptic effect of liquid crystal was developed and the device was made.One liquid crystal cell was inserted into the traditional Lyot filter.The tuning could be achieved by using the electro-birefringence effect of liquid crystal.Four tunable liquid crystal filters were assembled with their integral ratio phase retardations.The simulation showed that the tunable range was 450～550 nm and the spectral resolution was 10 nm.A four-stage tunable liquid crystal filter was made and tested.The results indicated the main performance index was in accord with the design requests.The research results can be applied as reference for the study of broad spectrum multiple-stage tunable filters.

Abstract:We report on on-chip electro-optic tuning of high-Q lithium niobate microresonator with integrated in-plane microelectrodes fabricated by femtosecond laser. Due to the compact spatial arrangement, high electro-optical tuning coefficient of 3.41 pm/V was demonstrated.
