Abstract:In order to improve the imaging quality of ghost imaging and solve the problem of high distortion factor under low sampling ratio, we propose a compressive sensing ghost imaging method based on neighbor similarity (NSGI). The neighbor similarity embodied in the correlation between image pixels contains abundant information regarding the spatial structure of the object. We analyze the principle of compressive sensing ghost imaging and use the neighbor similarity to evaluate undetected targets. According to the principle of greedy algorithm, we adopt the neighbor similarity to optimize the process of image reconstruction, and set up the threshold value of the correlation coefficient to reduce computation load and improve precision. The simulation and experimental results show that compared with the traditional ghost imaging, NSGI can obtain high-quality images based on a low sampling frequency, which will further facilitate the practical application of ghost imaging.

Abstract:As a new imaging mechanism, ghost imaging has become a hot area of research in optical imaging field. In this paper, the effect of intensity correlation order on lensless ghost imaging system is investigated. We demonstrate that the image quality of Nth-order ghost imaging and Nth-order ghost imaging with background subtraction can be affected by the different intensity correlation order of test light and reference both theoretically and experimentally. The result indicates that the image quality will not be certainly increased with the increasing of the intensity correlation order, and here will be very useful for choosing an appropriate intensity correlation order in practice.

Abstract:The theory that light can transmit information in a unique way has been proved by the experiment and theory of correlated imaging. In this paper, the principles of correlated imaging were discussed in semi-classical interpretations. In the view of pseudo-thermal light field, photoelectric detection and correlated computation, the imaging process was analyzed. Field of view, spatial resolution and contrast of the system were given. On this basis, the traditional linear correlation algorithm was improved to make the ghost image a mean square convergence unbiased estimation of the object transmission function. The corresponding computational ghost imaging experiment measurement indicates that under the same number, especially less than the Nyquist frequency, the PSNR is significantly improved and background noise is effectively suppressed compared with the traditional algorithm.
Computational Ghost Imaging Using a Dynamic Scattering Medium by the Point-by-Point Compensation Method

Abstract:Computational ghost imaging (CGI) can easily penetrate a static scattering medium. However, when the scattering medium changes dynamically, the measured light intensity is subject to nonlinear changes caused by the medium; as a result, the light intensity of each measurement exhibits a drift, and the reconstructed image contains lot of noise due to the interference. To improve imaging results penetrating a dynamic scattering medium, this study proposes a method to correct the measured value of each point. In this method, patterns with the reflectivity of 1 arc added to a measurement matrix. The attenuation factor is obtained at each time by recording the change of light intensity after projecting the pattern, and the compensation coefficient at the middle time is calculated. According to the compensation coefficient, the light intensity distortion caused by the change of the medium's attenuation factor is corrected for each point, and finally, the transformed values arc restored and calculated. The reconstruction results show that the proposed method can effectively deal with the aforementioned noise problem of the CGI technology encountered while penetrating a dynamic scattering medium.

Abstract:Compressive sensing ghost imaging has made great progress in recent years because it has the characteristics of less number of samples. Aiming at optical field distribution change in ghost imaging,the propagation process of light field was analyzed. The size of the lens makes the diffraction effect more obvious. The facula superposition makes actu-al light field become fuzzy and deviate from the preset value. The light intensity spread function of the diffraction limit-ed system was calculated and the preset light field was revised. However,the revised light field acting as observation matrix can still be reconstructed under the condition of mutual coherence. Experimental results indicate that the re-vised light field is similar to actual light field and observation matrix can reconstruct high-grade picture. So it is sig-nificant to revise preset light field by using light intensity spread function.

Abstract:Experimental data with digital masks and a theoretical analysis are presented for an imaging scheme that we call time-correspondence differential ghost imaging (TCDGI). It is shown that by conditional averaging of the information from the reference detector but with the negative signals inverted, the quality of the reconstructed images is in general superior to all other ghost imaging (GI) methods to date. The advantages of both differential GI and time-correspondence GI are combined, plus less data manipulation and shorter computation time are required to obtain equivalent quality images under the same conditions. This TCDGI method offers a general approach applicable to all GI techniques, especially when objects with continuous gray tones are involved.

Quantified Advantage of Ghost Imaging over Regular Imaging

Abstract:Ghost imaging is a remarkable technique where light that never interacts with an object is detected with a camera and still the image of the object is recorded. The method relies on the use of correlated light and an additional bucket detector. Ghost imaging has been used in archaeology, bio-medicine, for seeing through turbid media, and promises X-ray imaging improvements, amongst many other applications. However, the advantage of ghost imaging over regular imaging can be difficult to quantify. For classical ghost imaging of a single pixel aperture (the object), we find a closed analytic expression for the signal-to-noise ratio using basic statistics. We find that this signal-to-noise ratio can exceed that of regular imaging with the same exposure of the aperture when the detectors are sufficiently noisy, illustrating a simple and quantifiable advantage. Numerical simulation confirms the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Imaging through strong scattering media is still one of the difficult challenges in the optical imaging field since the intensity information of target objects can be severely destroyed and heavily reduced by scatterers. The ghost imaging technique only using a single-pixel detector offers compelling advantages for detecting such weak signals. Here we propose a novel kind of imaging proposal, named asynchronous computational ghost imaging (ACGI), which is capable of capturing the ghost image of an unknown object by using the asynchronous detection. The theoretical explanation and experimental examples are given to show the influence of parameters of the asynchronous detection on the image quality of the ACGI system. To improve the image quality, we introduce a kind of algorithm based on compressed sensing into the ACGI system, where sharp ghost images can be reconstructed with much fewer measurements. More importantly, we experimentally investigate the robustness of the ACGI system through strong scattering media and the ghost image can still be reconstructed by means of the asynchronous detection. Our work offers a new way to realize ghost imaging through strong scattering media in the asynchronous detection way, where the requirement of the synchronous detection in the time and intensity aspects can be largely reduced, which may be very useful for real applications of ghost imaging in X-ray or weak light environments.

Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) is an intriguing imaging technology which achieves the object images through intensity correlation between reference patterns and bucket signal. Here, we propose a probability model to explain the imaging mechanism of this modality, by assuming that the reference patterns fulfill an arbitrary identical distribution and that the objects are of gray-scale. We have proven that the probability of the reconstructed pixel values in the pixel region of the same original gray value obeys a Gaussian distribution, no matter which functional form of the reference patterns is used in correlation calculation. Both simulation and experiments have demonstrated that the probability of recovered pixel values are highly consistent with their Gaussian theoretical distribution, while their variance explains the appearance of reconstruction noise. In addition, we have also extend this theory to other classic correlation functions, e.g., normalized GI and differential GI. The results have shown that there is a linear relationship between reconstruction means in specified pixel regions and original gray values, which might provide a unified explanation for GI with thermal light.

Abstract:A recent thermal ghost imaging experiment by Wu's group constructed positive and negative images using a novel algorithm. This algorithm allows to form the images with use of partial measurements from the reference arm, even which never passes through the object, conditioned on the object arm. In this paper, we present a simple theory which explains the experimental observation, and provides an in-depth understanding of conventional ghost imaging. In particular, we theoretically show that the visibility of formed images through such an algorithm is not bounded by the standard value 1/3. In fact, it can ideally grow up to unity (with reduced imaging quality). Thus, the algorithm described here not only offers an alternative way to decode spatial correlation of thermal light, but also mimics a "bandpass filter" to remove the constant background such that the visibility or imaging contrast is improved. We further show that conditioned on one still object present in the test arm, it is possible to construct its image by sampling the available reference data.

Abstract:Different from conventional imaging methods, which are based on the first-order field correlation, ghost imaging (GI) obtains the image information through high-order mutual-correlation of light fields from two paths with an object appearing in only one path. As a new optical imaging technology, GI not only provides us new capabilities beyond the conventional imaging methods, but also gives out a new viewpoint of imaging physical mechanism. It may be applied to many potential applications, such as remote sensing, snap-shot spectral imaging, thermal X-ray diffraction imaging and imaging through scattering media. In this paper, we reviewed mainly our research work of ghost imaging via sparsity constraints (GISC) and discussed the application and theory prospect of GISC concisely.

Abstract:We present an experimental comparison between different iterative ghost imaging algorithms. Our experimental setup utilizes a spatial light modulator for generating known random light fields to illuminate a partially-transmissive object. We adapt the weighting factor used in the traditional ghost imaging algorithm to account for changes in the efficiency of the generated light field. We show that our normalized weighting algorithm can match the performance of differential ghost imaging.

Abstract:Correlation is widely used to reconstruct the object image in ghost imaging (GI). But it only offers a linear proportion of the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) to the number of measurements. We develop a Gerchberg-Saxton-like technique for GI image reconstruction in this manuscript. The proposed technique takes the advantage of the integral property of the Fourier transform, and treat the captured data as constraints for image reconstruction. We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the technique, and observe a nonlinear growth of the SNR value with respect to the number of measurements in the simulation. The proposed technique provides a different perspective of image reconstruction of GI, and will be beneficial to further explore its potential. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Abstract As an indirect and computational imaging approach, imaging reconstruction efficiency is critical for ghost imaging (GI). Here, we compare different GI algorithms, including logarithmic GI and exponential GI we proposed, by numerically analysing their imaging reconstruction efficiency and error tolerance. Simulation results show that compressive GI algorithm has the highest reconstruction efficiency due to its global optimization property. Error tolerance studies further manifest that compressive GI and exponential GI are sensitive to the error ratio. By replacing the bucket input of compressive GI with different bucket object signal functions, we integrate compressive GI with other GI algorithms and discuss their imaging efficiency. With the combination between the differential GI (or normalized GI) and compressive GI, both reconstruction efficiency and error tolerance will present the best performance. Moreover, an optical encryption is proposed by combining logarithmic GI, exponential GI and compressive GI, which can enhance the encryption security based on GI principle.

Abstract:Most ghost imaging reconstruction algorithms require a large measurement time to retrieve the object information clearly. But not all groups of data play a positive role in reconstructing the object image. Abandoning some redundant data can not only enhance the quality of reconstruction images but also speed up the computation process. Here, we propose a method to screen the data using two threshold values set by a proportional parameter during the sampling process. Experimental results show that the reserved data after screening can be used in several reconstruction algorithms, and the reconstruction quality is enhanced or at least remains at the same level. Meanwhile, the computing time costs are greatly reduced, and so is the data storage.

Abstract:The underwater environment is extremely complex and variable, which makes it difficult for underwater robots detecting or recognizing surroundings using images acquired with cameras. Ghost imaging as a new imaging technique has attracted much attention due to its special physical properties and potential for imaging of objects in optically harsh or noisy environments. In this work, we experimentally study three categories of image reconstruction methods of ghost imaging for objects of different transmittance. For high-transmittance objects, the differential ghost imaging is more efficient than traditional ghost imaging. However, for low-transmittance objects, the reconstructed images using traditional ghost imaging and differential ghost imaging algorithms are both exceedingly blurred and cannot be improved by increasing the number of measurements. A compressive sensing method named augmented Lagrangian and alternating direction algorithm (TVAL3) is proposed to reduce the background noise imposed by the low-transmittance. Experimental results show that compressive ghost imaging can dramatically subtract the background noise and enhance the contrast of the image. The relationship between the quality of the reconstructed image and the complexity of object itself is also discussed.

Abstract:Nowadays the world has entered into the digital age, in which the data analysis and visualization have become more and more important. In analogy to imaging the real object, we demonstrate that the computational ghost imaging can image the digital data to show their characteristics, such as periodicity. Furthermore, our experimental results show that the use of optical imaging methods to analyse data exhibits unique advantages, especially in anti-interference. The data analysis with computational ghost imaging can be well performed against strong noise, random amplitude and phase changes in the binarized signals. Such robust data data analysis and imaging has an important application prospect in big data analysis, meteorology, astronomy, economics and many other fields.
