Abstract:In this work, silicon photonics structures for the optical addressing of trapped ion is developed for quantum computing applications. Grating-waveguide-grating structures of various designs are designed, and fabricated for various radius curvatures of 12, 15, 25 and 30 µm, respectively. From the optical measurements, gratings with radius of curvature of 25 and 30 µm exhibit lower power loss of 36.5 and 33.9 dB with better-focused beam profiles as compared to those with radius of curvature of 12 and 15 µm. The beam width from these gratings ranges between 17.31 to 41.54 µm, which provides the feasibility to perform optical addressing on 2 to 4 Sr+ ions trapped along the ground electrode of the ion trap.

Abstract:Mixed pitch gratings are developed for the optical addressing of trapped 88Sr+ ion by means of simulation and experimental-measurement approaches. Meanwhile, Python-based data analysis techniques were developed to analyze simulated and measured beam profiles. A fixed pitch grating with a pitch of 1.2 µm was used as a reference, and a mixed pitch grating with pitches of 1.1/1.2 µm of various ratios are investigated. The Python-based data analysis codes demonstrates highly-automated capability in processing both simulated and measured beam profile data to compute key parameters, including beam waist and Gaussian fitting. Mixed pitch grating delivers light beam with smaller beam waist (17.4 µm) compared to the fixed pitch grating (26.4 µm), exhibiting ~34% beam waist reduction.

Abstract:In this work, we report the design and optimization of photonics interposer for addressing trapped ion in a quantum computing system. The interposer is built on commercial SOI platform comprising of grating couplers and waveguide. 1,092 nm light beam can be coupled into the input coupler and propagates along the waveguide, which is eventually directed towards the trapped 88Sr+ ion qubit. Considering the coupling efficiency of both input and output coupler, the power efficiency reaching the trapped ion can be estimated to be ∼ 16%, and the output 1,092 nm light can be coupled onto the trapped ion qubit for addressing.

Abstract:Physical systems in the time domain may exhibit analogous phenomena in real space, such as time crystals, time-domain Fresnel lenses, and modulational interference in a qubit. Here we report the experimental realization of time-domain grating using a superconducting qutrit in periodically modulated probe and control fields via two schemes: Simultaneous modulation and complementary modulation. Both experimental and numerical results exhibit modulated Autler-Townes (AT) and modulation-induced diffraction (MID) effects. Theoretical results also confirm that the peak positions of the interference fringes of AT and MID effects are determined by the usual two-level relative phases, while the observed diffraction fringes, appearing only in the complementary modulation, are however related to the three-level relative phase. Further analysis indicates that such a single-atom time-domain diffraction originates from the correlation effect between the two time-domain gratings. Moreover, we find that the widths of the diffraction fringes are independent of the control-field power. Our results shed light on the experimental exploration of quantum coherence for modulated multi-level systems and may find promising applications in fast all-microwave switches and quantum-gate operations in the strong-driving regime.
Low Cross-Talk Optical Addressing of Trapped-Ion Qubits Using a Novel Integrated Photonic Chip

Abstract:Individual optical addressing in chains of trapped atomic ions requires generation of many small, closely spaced beams with low cross-talk. Furthermore, implementing parallel operations necessitates phase, frequency, and amplitude control of each individual beam. Here we present a scalable method for achieving all of these capabilities using a novel integrated photonic chip coupled to a network of optical fibre components. The chip design results in very low cross-talk between neighbouring channels even at the micrometre-scale spacing by implementing a very high refractive index contrast between the channel core and cladding. Furthermore, the photonic chip manufacturing procedure is highly flexible, allowing for the creation of devices with an arbitrary number of channels as well as non-uniform channel spacing at the chip output. We present the system used to integrate the chip within our ion trap apparatus and characterise the performance of the full individual addressing setup using a single trapped ion as a light-field sensor. Our measurements showed intensity cross-talk below $10^{-3}$ across the chip, with minimum observed cross-talk as low as $O\left(10^{-5}\right)$.

Abstract:The chip-fiber grating coupler is a fundamental building block in integrated photonics, providing convenient on-wafer testing and packaging. Couplers based on a silicon nitride (SiNx) material platform can achieve wider bandwidths than silicon-based couplers, but suffer from lower efficiency due to the relative low material refractive index. The efficiency of the SiNx grating coupler can be improved by using high-reflectivity silicon grating reflectors underneath. However, such a silicon grating reflector requires several fabrication steps, including lithography, etching, high precision alignment (HPA), and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). In this Letter, we demonstrate an easy-to-fabricate SiNx-on-SOI transverse-electric mode grating coupler requiring only one patterning step (grating alone), and without the need for HPA and CMP. A coupling coefficient of -2.5 dB and 1-dB-bandwidth of 65 nm has been experimentally measured.

Abstract:One of the most effective ways to advance the performance of quantum computers and quantum sensors is to increase the number of qubits or quantum resources in the system. A major technical challenge that must be solved to realize this goal for trapped-ion systems is scaling the delivery of optical signals to many individual ions. In this paper we demonstrate an approach employing waveguides and multi-mode interferometer splitters to optically address multiple $^{171}\textrm{Yb}^+$ ions in a surface trap by delivering all wavelengths required for full qubit control. Measurements of hyperfine spectra and Rabi flopping were performed on the E2 clock transition, using integrated waveguides for delivering the light needed for Doppler cooling, state preparation, coherent operations, and detection. We describe the use of splitters to address multiple ions using a single optical input per wavelength and use them to demonstrate simultaneous Rabi flopping on two different transitions occurring at distinct trap sites. This work represents an important step towards the realization of scalable integrated photonics for atomic clocks and trapped-ion quantum information systems.

Abstract:An on-chip multi-grating device is proposed to interface single-atoms and integrated photonic circuits, by guiding and focusing lasers to the area with 10um above the chip for trapping, state manipulation, and readout of single Rubidium atoms. For the optical dipole trap, two 850 nm laser beams are diffracted and overlapped to form a lattice of single-atom dipole trap, with the diameter of optical dipole trap around 2.7um. Similar gratings are designed for guiding 780 nm probe laser to excite and also collect the fluorescence of 87Rb atoms. Such a device provides a compact solution for future applications of single atoms, including the single photon source, single-atom quantum register, and sensor.

Abstract:Abstract The control of large-scale quantum information processors based on arrays of trapped ions requires a means to route and focus multiple laser beams to each of many trapping sites in parallel. Here, we combine arrays of fibres, 3D laser-written waveguides and diffractive microlenses to demonstrate the principle of a micro-optic interconnect suited to this task. The module is intended for use with an ion microtrap of 3D electrode geometry. It guides ten independent laser beams with unique trajectories to illuminate a pair of spatially separated target points. Three blue and two infrared beams converge to overlap precisely at each desired position. Typical relative crosstalk intensities in the blue are 3.6 × 10 −3 and the average insertion loss across all channels is 8 dB. The module occupies ∼10 4 times less volume than a conventional bulk-optic equivalent and is suited to different ion species.

Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:The design, fabrication, and demonstration of a planar two-dimensional-crossed reflective diffractive grating are proposed to construct a novel optical configuration, to the best of our knowledge, potentially applied for atom cooling and trapping in a magneto-optical trap. Based on the proposed single-beam single-exposure scheme by means of an orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirrors interferometer, we rapidly patterned a ∼1µm period grating capable of providing a uniform intensity of the diffracted beams. The key structural parameters of the grating including the array square hole's width and depth were determined, aiming at providing a high energy of the diffracted beams to perform the atom cooling and trapping. To guarantee the diffracted beams to be overlapped possibly, we adopted a polarized beam splitter to guide the optical path of the incident and zero-order diffracted beams. Therefore, one zero-order diffracted beam with a retroreflected mode and four first-order diffracted beams with appropriate optical path constructed a three-dimensional optical configuration of three orthogonal pairs of counterpropagating beams. Finally, three pairs of the counterpropagating cooling laser beams with 9 mm diameter and >10% diffraction efficiencies were achieved, and the circular polarization chirality, purity, and compensation of the desired diffracted beams are further evaluated, which preliminarily validated a high applicability for the magneto-optical trap system.
Individually Addressed Entangling Gates in a Two-Dimensional Ion Crystal

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) ion crystals have become a promising way to scale up qubit numbers for ion trap quantum information processing. However, to realize universal quantum computing in this system, individually addressed high-fidelity two-qubit entangling gates still remain challenging due to the inevitable micromotion of ions in a 2D crystal as well as the technical difficulty in 2D addressing. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates between any ion pairs in a 2D crystal of four ions. We use symmetrically placed crossed acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) to drive Raman transitions and achieve an addressing crosstalk error below 0.1%. We design and demonstrate a gate sequence by alternatingly addressing two target ions, making it compatible with any single-ion addressing techniques without crosstalk from multiple addressing beams. We further examine the gate performance versus the micromotion amplitude of the ions and show that its effect can be compensated by a recalibration of the laser intensity without degrading the gate fidelity. Our work paves the way for ion trap quantum computing with hundreds to thousands of qubits on a 2D ion crystal.

A low-crosstalk double-side addressing system using acousto-optic deflectors for atomic ion qubits

Abstract:The ability to individually and agilely manipulate qubits is crucial for the scalable trapped-ion quantum information processing. A plethora of challenging proposals have been demonstrated with the utilization of optical addressing systems, in which single ions is addressed exclusively by individual laser beam. However, crosstalk error in optical addressing systems limits the gate fidelity, becoming an obstacle to quantum computing, especially quantum error correction. In this work, we demonstrate a low-crosstalk double-side addressing system based on a pair of acousto-optic deflectors (AODs). The AODs addressing method can flexibly and parallelly address arbitrary ions between which the distance is variable in a chain. We employ two 0.4~NA objective lenses in both arms of the Raman laser and obtain a beam waist of 0.95~$\mu\mathrm{m}$, resulting in a Rabi rate crosstalk as low as $6.32\times10^{-4}$ when the neighboring ion separation is about 5.5~$\mu\mathrm{m}$. This agile and low-crosstalk double-side addressing system is promising for higher-fidelity gates and the practical application of the quantum error correction.

Abstract:Experiments with trapped ions and neutral atoms typically employ optical modulators in order to control the phase, frequency, and amplitude of light directed to individual atoms. These elements are expensive, bulky, consume substantial power, and often rely on free-space I/O channels, all of which pose scaling challenges. To support many-ion systems like trapped-ion quantum computers or miniaturized deployable devices like clocks and sensors, these elements must ultimately be microfabricated, ideally monolithically with the trap to avoid losses associated with optical coupling between physically separate components. In this work we design, fabricate, and test an optical modulator capable of monolithic integration with a surface-electrode ion trap. These devices consist of piezo-optomechanical photonic integrated circuits configured as multi-stage Mach-Zehnder modulators that are used to control the intensity of light delivered to a single trapped ion on a separate chip. We use quantum tomography employing hundreds of multi-gate sequences to enhance the sensitivity of the fidelity to the types and magnitudes of gate errors relevant to quantum computing and better characterize the performance of the modulators, ultimately measuring single qubit gate fidelities that exceed 99.7%.

Integrated scalable metalens array for optical addressing

Abstract:The scalability of optical addressing is one of the key challenges for the large-scale trapped-ion quantum computing (QC). Metasurfaces is a promising solution due to excellent optical performance, integration, and miniaturization. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate a design of integrated scalable metalens array (ISMA) working in the UV 350nm range for optical addressing. These ISMAs can focus the collimated individual addressing beams array into diffraction-limited spots array, featuring crosstalk below 0.82%, focusing efficiency as high as 36.90%. For various applications, the x-polarized, polarization-insensitive and right-handed circularly polarized ISMA are designed. The design proposed in this paper can also find applications in optical trapping.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are theoretically known to possess infinite lifetimes and Q factors. However, due to the difficulties in achieving it in reality, symmetry breaking is often introduced in the structure to transform symmetrically protected BICs (SP-BICs) into quasi-BICs (q-BICs) with extremely high Q factors. Therefore, q-BICs can be utilized to enhance the Q factors of optical sensors. In this paper, we propose the design of a double-layer composite one-dimensional grating with a high Q factor. The structure consists of a double-layers silicon (Si) grating on a silicon dioxide (SiO2) substrate. By introducing a displacement in the upper-layer grating to break the symmetry, quasi-BICs (q-BICs) are induced. The induced q-BICs achieve a Q factor of 2248 for TM waves, enabling enhanced optical sensing capabilities. The proposed q-BICs sensor, exhibiting anisotropy for both TM and TE polarized light, holds great potential for narrowband polarizers and sensing applications.

Abstract:In this work, we report ion trap fabrication using prevailing foundry copper back-end-of-line process on a 300mm Si platform. Surface electrodes comprising of ~3.7 µm thick Cu and ~0.2 µm thick of Au surface finish are electroplated above a ~3 µm thick of SiO2 layer on a high-resistivity Si substrate. The innovative process, which is fully compatible with CMOS back-end, enables a fine gap trench structure between the electrodes, such that the exposed dielectric area to the trapped ions is reduced. By optimizing the electroplating process, a relatively flat Cu surface is created with a thin Au layer deposited as an effective protective layer to prevent surface oxidation. The fabricated trap is wire-bonded in a CPGA package for DC and RF testing. Small size Si traps show a good RF dissipation property which is a prerequisite for ion trapping. The further integration of TSV and Si photonics shows a promising prospect in terms of electrical and optical performance enhancement of ion trap.

Abstract:Ion trap is a promising approach to realizing scalable quantum computer as it presents high coherence time. Silicon, due to its manufacturability, is being considered as a potential substrate to fabricate complex ion-trap designs towards trap miniaturization and on-chip integration of electronics and optics. However, Si ion traps need proper structural design to reduce the substrate RF loss. In this paper, high-resistivity Si substrate materials has been utilized to fabricate surface electrode ion trap. Its DC and RF properties has been investigated and compared to the ion trap fabricated on sapphire substrate, which is one of the most established substrate material for trap fabrication.
