Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) measures the dynamic strain by extracting the phase of the scattering signal. However, the dynamic strain measurement range in conventional Phi-OTDR is restricted by the phase unwrapping algorithm. In this letter, a new phase unwrapping algorithm, combining the phase and polarization information, is proposed and demonstrated to enlarge the dynamic strain measurement range in Phi-OTDR based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array. By correcting the phase signal with the assistance of polarization signal, the large dynamic strain can be recovered. In experiments, the dynamic strain measurement range is demonstrated to increase by about three times, which cannot be achieved by the conventional unwrapping algorithm. Further, the proposed method has the potential to achieve a large amplitude range determined by polarization signal and a good sensitivity determined by phase signal at the same time.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) has been widely used in various applications for its distributed measurement capability of dynamic disturbance along the entire length of sensing fiber. However, traditional Phi-OTDR cannot make high-precision measurement on the external disturbance-induced strain due to the randomly distributed position and reflectivity of scattering points within the optical fiber. In this paper, ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array has been proposed to generate strong and controllable reflections while providing acceptable insertion loss. Active laser frequency sweeping and unwrapping algorithms were included to set up a definite relationship between strain value and variation of interference power between neighboring reflection lights. With the assistant of UWFBG array, the capability of F-OTDR has been upgraded to be able to take high-precision measurement on strain. In the experiment, multi-point mu epsilon level dynamic strain variation has been fully captured at the end of a 5-km long sensing fiber with 2 m spatial resolution. The measured strain value was compared to the calibrated one obtained with Mach-Zehnder Interferometer method. These two values fit with each other quite well with a maximum deviation of 6.2 n epsilon, which confirmed the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.

Unfortunately, the spatial resolution in this system is not satisfactory, since spatial resolution is equal to UWFBGs interval and the interval cannot be too small. We have proposed an enhanced system to realize quantitative strain measurement and high spatial resolution monitoring by combining ordinary Phi-OTDR system with the UWFBG array-based Phi-OTDR system. Experimental results showed that quantitative strain measurement at the end of a 5-km long sensing fiber could be realized with a spatial resolution of 4 m while the interval between adjacent UWFGBs was 50 m. Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.

However, the performance is challenged by the trade-off between spatial resolution and sensing distance. In this paper, we propose a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) Φ-OTDR based on a cross-arranged dual-wavelength UWFBG array to overcome this limitation. By combining the vibration positioning results of two wavelengths, high resolution and long sensing distance can be achieved at the same time.

Abstract:Phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been widely used in many applications for its distributed sensing ability on weak disturbance all along the sensing fiber. However, traditional Φ-OTDR cannot make quantitative measurement on the external disturbance due to the randomly distributed position and reflectivity of scatters within the optical fiber. Recently, some methods have been proposed to realize quantitative measurement of dynamic strain. In these literatures, the fiber with or without FBGs in practice was easily damaged and with difficulty of maintenance. PZT is employed to generate strain event in the fiber. There is a large gap compared with the real detecting environment, which will not reveal the full performance of the sensing system. In this paper, a distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system for dynamic strain measurement based on artificial reflector is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The fiber under test (FUT) is composed by four 20-meter long single mode optical fiber patch cords (OFPCs), which are cascaded with ferrule contactor/physical contact (FC/PC) connectors via fiber flanges. The fiber facet of FC/PC connector forms an artificial reflector. When the interval between the two reflectors is changed, the phase of the interference signal will also be changed. A symmetric 3×3 coupler with table-look-up scheme is introduced to discriminate the phase change through interference intensity. In our experiment, the center 10m section of the second OFPC is attached to the bottom of an aluminum alloy plate. An ordinary loudspeaker box was located on the top of the aluminum alloy plate. The dynamic strain generated by the loudspeaker box is transmitted from the aluminum alloy plate to the OFPC. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a good frequency response characteristic up to 3.2 kHz and a linear intensity response of R2=0.9986 while the optical probe pulse width and repetition rate were 100ns and 10 kHz respectively. Meanwhile, triangle and cosine amplitude-modulated (AM) dynamic strain applied on the fiber are successfully discriminated. The artificial reflectors based on FC/PCs were easily assembled and maintained, and the method of vibration transmission closely resembled the real circumstance than PZT. Therefore, these advantages will extend the potential of this Φ-OTDR technology in structure health monitoring.
Enhanced range of the dynamic strain measurement in phase-sensitive OTDR with tunable sensitivity

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) realizes quantitative measurement of the dynamic strain employing phase demodulation. Unfortunately, it is difficult to measure the large dynamic strain with the conventional Φ-OTDR due to the restriction of the unwrapping algorithm. In this work, an approach based on two-wavelength probe is proposed and demonstrated to improve the measurable range of the dynamic strain in Φ-OTDR. By utilizing the difference between the two phases acquiring with two different lasers, the large dynamic strain can be recovered. In experiments, dynamic strains with peak values from 10.32 uɛ to 24.08 uɛ are retrieved accurately, which cannot be recovered with the conventional Φ-OTDR. Moreover, the tunable sensitivity is also demonstrated through adjusting the wavelengths of the probe. With the increment of the wavelength interval from 9.06 nm to 23.06 nm, the normalized sensitivity increases from 0.4 to 1 accordingly. That agrees well with the theoretical prediction. Foreseeably, the proposed method will extend the scope of application fields for Φ-OTDR, which requires large dynamic strain recognition.

Abstract:Phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) has been widely used in various applications for its distributed measurement capability of dynamic disturbance along the entire length of sensing fiber. In our previous research, the capacity of Phi-OTDR sensing system has been enhanced with ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array for high-precision quantitative measurement on the external disturbance. Multipoint ne level dynamic strain variation has been fully captured with 2m spatial resolution. However, only 5 identical UWFBGs were used in the demonstration. For large-scale sensing network, the detectable fiber length would be limited by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the dynamic range of the reflection signal. In this paper, the performance limit of the UWFGB array enhanced Phi-OTDR sensing system has been investigated. A numerical simulation was performed to illustrate the relationships between the SNR, sensing length, spatial resolution and the UWFBG reflectivity. The simulation results have shown that when the reflectivity is relatively low, the noise is mainly contributed from Rayleigh scattering. On the other hand, the multiple reflections will dominate the overall noise characteristic with the growing of UWFBG reflectivity. The requirement of detection dynamic range was also analyzed. Simulation has shown that lower UWFBG reflectivity will lead to smaller signal dynamic range, making the selection of detector more practicable. The analysis result is quite useful for designing large-scale sensing network based on UWFGB array enhanced Phi-OTDR sensing system in practical situation.

Abstract:We demonstrate a stable homodyne phase demodulation method with a double pulse based on an ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array. The technique divides one of the probe pulses into three sections and introduces suc-cessive 2 pi/3 phase differences into each section. By using a simple direct detection scheme, it can achieve distributed and quantitative vibration measurement along the UWFBG array. Compared to the traditional homodyne demodulation technique, the proposed technique is more stable and easier to accomplish. Moreover, the reflected light from the UWF-BGs can provide a signal that is modulated uniformly by the dynamic strain and multiple results for averaging, resulting in a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We experimentally demonstrate the technique's effectiveness by monitoring dif-ferent vibrations. The SNR for measuring a generic 100 Hz, 0.08 rad vibration in a 3 km UWFBG array with a reflectiv-ity of -40 to -45 dB is estimated to be similar to 44.92 dB. (c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:A distributed vibration sensing technique using double optical pulse based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and ultra-weak FBG (UWFBG) array is proposed for the first time. The single mode sensing fiber is integrated with UWFBG array which has uniform spatial interval and ultra-weak reflectivity. The relatively high reflectivity of the UWFBG, compared with the Rayleigh backscattering(RBS), gains a high SNR for the signal, which can make the system achieve the maximum detectable frequency limited by the round trip time of the probe pulse in fiber. A corresponding experimental Φ-OTDR system with a 4.5 km sensing fiber integrated with UWFBG array was setup for the evaluation of the system performance. Distributed vibration sensing is successfully realized with spatial resolution of 50 m. The sensing range of the vibration frequency can cover from 3 Hz to 9 kHz.

Abstract:A phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry sensing system based on Ultra-weak FBG Array using double pulses is proposed. The principle of this sensing system is elaborated. A series of simulations are carried out to optimize the parameters to increase the sensing distance of this system. The parameters contain reflectivity of UWFBG, the interval between adjacent UWFBGs and pulse width. The optimal reflectivity and pulse width corresponding to different grating space are found out to achieve a longer sensing distance.

Abstract:In distributed fiber-optic sensing based on optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), Doppler frequency shifts due to the changes of disturbances during one sweep period introduce demodulation errors that accumulate along both the distance and time, impairing the sensing performance. Here, we report distributed dynamic strain sensing using Doppler-shift-immune phase-sensitive OFDR based on frequency-tracking and spectrum-zooming with ultra-weak reflection array. Theoretical study has been carried out with the introduction of mismatch coefficient, unveiling quantitatively the impact of Doppler shift. Following a numerical analysis of the proposed method, a retained precision has been experimentally verified regardless of the position mismatch due to the Doppler effect. Doppler-shift-immune sensing for dynamic strains covering continuous spatial resolution over a distance of 1000 m with a 2.5 cm sensing spatial resolution has been demonstrated, verifying the high fidelity promised by the proposed method.

Abstract:Structural strain is one of the important parameters of representing structural health condition. Fiber-optic strain sensors have a number of inherent advantages, such as high sensitivity to external environment, small size, light weight, resistance to electromagnetic interference, ability for absolute measurement, superior stability, easy multiplexing and compatibility of being embedded in structures, etc.. In this paper, a novel strain monitoring method using optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor has been applied to the urban bridge cluster monitoring system, the principle, design and application in the structural health monitoring system are described, two years of normal operation has shown that this kind of strain monitoring and control method is feasible and useful.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a technique using a composite-double-probe-pulse (CDPP) to eliminate the influence of polarization fading for Ultra-weak FBG (UWFBG) array-based phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). The CDPP is composed of two optical pulses whose spatial interval is equal to twice the spatial interval of adjacent UWFBGs in the UWFBG array. The first optical pulse has a long duration, and the second one is composed of two continuous short pulses with orthogonal polarization states. The width of the short pulses is half of the long pulse, and their modulation frequencies are different from the long pulse. Using the proposed approach, we experimentally demonstrated that distributed quantitative measurements can be realized with high sensitivity based on only direct detection scheme, while the influence of polarization fading is effectively mitigated.

Abstract:Phase optical time domain reflectometer (Phi-OTDR) is capable of quantitatively gauging the perturbations on the fiber based on the linear relationship between the phase change and the strain of the fiber. However, various noises in the coherent Phi-OTDR system may deteriorate the accuracy of quantitative measurement. In this letter, the characteristic of the phase evolution along fiber is analyzed and the phase change is recovered through differential calculations in the direction of both fiber length and time. According to the linear characteristic of phase change, the accurate measurement result is finally obtained by fitting the trace of phase change with the method of total least square. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis and five sets of measurements for the sinusoidal vibration are exceedingly consistent with each other. The variation coefficients of amplitude and frequency are 0.1931% and 0.0127%, respectively. And the minimum value of R-square representing the similarity between the measured waveform and the driving signal is 0.9999.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an enhanced quasi-distributed accelerometer array based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( $\phi $ -OTDR) and ultraweak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG). By utilizing a transducer cylinder, the vibration can be easily converted to an axial strain of the sensing fiber, which enables a high sensitivity in vibration measurement. Furthermore, a UWFBG array that contains backscattering enhanced points along the fiber is employed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Consequently, quasi-distributed vibration sensing with a resolution of 0.03 g and a flat sensitivity of 1.4 rad/g in a frequency range from 50 to 800 Hz is realized over 500-m long UWFBG. The proposed sensing system offers high-sensing sensitivity, large multiplexing capacity, and anti-interference fading, which can be applied for structural health monitoring of large buildings and machinery.

Abstract:The phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometers (Phi-OTDR), which can realize distributed acoustic sensing, has been widely applied in health monitoring of civil structures. To break through the limit of the frequency response bandwidth (FRB) and to reduce the fading positions of traditional Phi-OTDR systems, we propose an Phi-OTDR system based on the ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array and the frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM) scheme. Taking advantage of UWFBGs, the probability of fading positions occurred on the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) waveforms can be dramatically reduced, which means the visibility of the system can be enhanced. The FDM structure can enhance the sampling rate by interleaving algorithm, which helps the Phi-OTDR system to expand its FRB. The experimental results show that the frequency of vibration up to 440 kHz can be detected along 330 m UWFBGs, which is approximately three times higher than the upper limit of the FRB of traditional systems. When compared with the traditional scheme that adopts ordinary single-mode fiber as the sensing part, the probability of fading occurrence in the proposed system has been reduced from 10(-2) to 10(-10). The proposed sensing system in this paper reveals a promising option for the performance enhancement of the Phi-OTDR system, which can offer wider FRB as well as the enhanced visibility characteristic.

Abstract:The multi-parameter sensing is in great demand for comprehensive recognition in various application scenarios. We demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) for simultaneous vibration and temperature/strain sensing based on the integration of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). A double heterodyne detection configuration is set up to receive the Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering simultaneously, which can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce the polarization fading noise for the Brillouin signal at the same time. Most components in the setup are multiplexed for the Brillouin and Rayleigh signals. The overall cost is much lower than the summation of the BOTDR and the Φ-OTDR setup. In experiments, the setup is capable of measuring temperature change near the end of the 49.9 km long fiber with 0.381 MHz measurement uncertainty and restore different vibration patterns correctly by demodulating the phase variation of Rayleigh scattering signal, owning a 20 m spatial resolution. The sampling rate of the vibration measurement is 1.8 kHz, and the achieved dynamic strain resolution is 1.235 nɛ/√Hz with 100 Hz vibration.
