Abstract:Optical scanning holography (OSH) involves the principles of optical scanning and heterodyning. The use of heterodyning leads to phase-preserving, which is the basic idea of holography. While heterodyning has numerous advantages, it requires complicated and expensive electronic processing. We investigate an off-axis approach to OSH, thereby eliminating the use of heterodyning for phase retrieval. We develop optical scanning theory for holographic imaging and show that by properly designing the scanning beam, we can perform coherent and incoherent holographic recording. Simulation results are provided to verify the proposed idea.

Abstract:The optical scanning holography (OSH) technique can capture all the three-dimensional volume information of an object in a hologram via a single raster scan. The digital hologram can then be processed to reconstruct individual sectional images of the object. In this paper, we present a scheme to reconstruct sectional images in OSH with enhanced depth resolution, where a spatial light modulator (SLM) is adopted as a configurable point pupil. By switching the SLM between two states, different Fresnel zone plates (FZPs) are generated based on the same optical system. With extra information provided by different FZPs, a depth resolution at 0.7 μm can be achieved.

Abstract:A method for selective edge extraction in an optical scanning holography system is proposed based on annular pupil filters, in which a single two-dimensional optical scan is used to acquire the holographic information of a three-dimensional object based on the two-pupil heterodyne scanning technique. First, a small aperture filter and an annular pupil filter are used as two pupils to form a composite light field for scanning an object and extracting the edge information of an object. Then, the selective extraction of the anisotropy of an object is achieved by moving and destroying the symmetry of an annular pupil filter and simultaneously selecting two identical annular pupil filters. The computer simulation results show that the selective edge extraction of isotropy and anisotropy can be well achieved by using annular pupil filters in an optical scanning holography system.

Abstract:Limited by the property of charge-coupled device (CCD), the recording optical path of in-line digital holography is commonly used to take full advantage of the CCD sampling space, which is in order to improve the performance of digital holographic measurement. But the reconstructed image of in-line digital holography is overlapped by the direct wave and the conjugate image, which is hard to be separated. To achieve the real-time high-resolution measurement of in-line digital holography, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography is put forward, which is based on the single phase-shifting cepstrum technology. Then two key technical schemes of this technology, including the method of adjusting dual-CCD's mirroring overlapping position and the optical structure of dual-CCD single-exposure π/2 phase-shifting, are given. Finally, the experimental results show that, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography can solve the overlapping problem well. Moreover, the real-time recording and reconstruction of in-line digital holography are initially realized.

Abstract:A panoramic optical annular staring imaging technology was presented,which could be used to image the surrounding 360° scene at one time without rotating the optical system.Imaging characteristics of the panoramic annular lens was analyzed and a design example was given.According to the design,a prototype of the panoramic annular staring optical system had developed and panoramic ring images could be obtained.With digital image processing,the panoramic image could be expanded with self-written software.Potential application of this technology in industry and defense was discussed.

Abstract:Employing a single-pixel digital holographic recording technique called optical scanning holography (OSH), we accomplish the formidable task of sectioning with edge extraction in three-dimensional (3D) optical incoherent imaging. OSH is a special variant of generalized two-pupil heterodyning image processing, where one of the pupils used is a delta function with the other being a uniform function. In this study, we investigate the use of an annular pupil and a random-phase pupil for edge extraction during sectioning of a 3-D object. Novel simulation results indicate excellent edge extraction of a multi-section object with good sectioning capability, i.e., with each focused edge-extracted section out-of-focused haze has been eliminated. Abstract:We have built a system for off-axis optical scanning holography (OSH) and for the first time experimentally demonstrated the recording of a hologram without heterodyning or a spatial light modulator for temporal frequency shifting. To solve the problem of phase fluctuation, a phase monitoring module is included in the system. Single sideband filtering together with phase compensation is performed for the reconstruction without the zeroth-order light and the twin image. Properties and practical issues in the coherent-mode and incoherent-mode of off-axis OSH are also discussed.

Abstract:Phase retrieval method can determine pupil phase directly from image formed by the optical system with no extra hardware. This method has attracted more and more attentions for its unique advantage, and has been successfully applied in many domains such as large telescope alignment, X-ray imaging and so on. In this paper, we propose a hybrid phase retrieval method for annular pupil, which is composed of two steps. In the first step, the estimated spot images is computed with analytic expression, while fast Fourier transform is used in the second step. This method can achieve high retrieval speed without sacrificing the retrieval accuracy. Numerical simulation is performed to validate this phase retrieval method.

Abstract:Holographic techniques are indispensable tools for modern optical engineering. Over the past two decades, research about incoherent digital holography has continued to attract attention. Optical scanning holography (OSH) can obtain incoherent holograms using single-pixel detection and structured illumination with Fresnel zone patterns (FZPs). Particularly by changing the size of a detector, OSH can also obtain holograms under coherently illuminated conditions. Since 1979, OSH has continuously evolved. According to the evolution of semiconductor technology, spatial light modulators (SLMs) come to be useful for various imaging fields. By using SLM techniques for OSH, the practicality of OSH is improved. These SLM-based OSH methods are termed computational OSH (COSH). In this review, the configurations, recording and reconstruction methods, and proposed applications of COSH are reviewed.

Abstract:In this Letter, an autofocusing method in optical scanning holography(OSH) system is proposed. By introducing Lissajous scanning into multiple signal classification(MUSIC) method in time-reversal(TR) OSH, the axial locations of the targets can be retrieved with better resolution and the peak prominence increases from 0.21 to 0.34. The feasibility of this method is confirmed by simulation as well as experiment.

Abstract:The recording of the hologram in the optical scanning holography(OSH)proposed by T.C.Poon in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is to use the Fresnel Zone Plate to scan the object,but as the interval between two adjacent fringes of the FZP in the center is greater than that in the edge,and as that of the circular grating (CG) is the same everywhere,in order to use the resolution of the system fully,we proposed the circular grating optical scanning holography (CGOSH).According to the linear system theory,the optical transfer function (OTF) of the system is the Fourier transfer of the image intensity distribution of the real-time circular grating,and the point spread function of the system is δ function.And also in this paper we give out the theories and the computer simulations of the OTF and PSF.

Abstract:Off-axis optical scanning holography (OSH) has been recently proposed to perform scanning holography without the use of heterodyning. In the present work, we combine the principle of off-axis scanning holography operating in the coherent mode with the idea of a layer-based method to achieve a new computational imaging technique for optical tomography. The point cloud data of a complex three-dimensional (3D) scene is layered along the depth direction as the 3D object is divided into a series of planar layers parallel to the hologram along the optical axis direction. The data of each layer generates a single-layer hologram under coherent off-axis scanning holography. Finally, the hologram of a complex three-dimensional object is obtained by superimposing all the single-layer holograms. We use a single-sideband filter to extract the hologram spectrum to obtain a positive first-order reconstruction and demonstrate numerical reconstruction with different diffraction distances. Also, optically reconstructed images are displayed by a spatial light modulator. The results indicate that the proposed method can realize the holographic recording and reconstruction of a complex three-dimensional object without the zeroth-order beam and the twin image, providing a new computational method for the generation of holograms of large-scale and long-depth 3D objects.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the influence of two kinds of deviation errors on sectional image reconstruction for an optical scanning holography system using a random-phase pupil. The first deviation occurs in the lateral pixel position while the second occurs in the pixel value of the decoding function. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that these two deviations may lead to noise in the reconstructed image. Additional discussions include the signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed image.

Abstract:Optical scanning holography (OSH) is a single-pixel digital holographic technique where real-time holographic recordings of a threedimensional (3D) object can be acquired by utilizing two-dimensional (2D) active optical heterodyne scanning without the need of a low-resolution 2-D pixel array sensor as in conventional digital holography for passive 3D imaging. Indeed, applications of the technique include cryptography, fluorescence holographic microscopy, 3D pattern recognition, 3D holographic TV, and 3D optical remote sensing. In this presentation, I will first provide an overview of OSH. I will then describe how OSH can be used as a digital holographic technique for 3D optical remote sensing applications. Successful demonstration of infrared OSH could open doors for novel digital holographic remote sensing applications such as in automated driving. BIOGRAPHY Ting-Chung Poon is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, Virginia, USA. His current research interests include 3D image processing and optical scanning holography (OSH). Dr. Poon is the author of the monograph Optical Scanning Holography with MATLAB (Springer, 2007), and is the co-author of, among other textbooks, Introduction to Modern Digital Holography with MATLAB (Cambridge University Press, 2014). He is also editor of the book Digital Holography and Three-Dimensional Display (Springer, 2006). Dr. Poon served as Topical Editor/Division Editor of Applied Optics from 2004 to 2014. He was also associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. Currently Dr. Poon is associate editor-in-chief of Chinese Optics Letters. Dr. Poon is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Physics (IOP), the Optical Society (OSA), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).
