Abstract:A novel type of microring assisted by subwavelength reflection unit is studied. By adding well-designed subwavelength reflection unit to the waveguide, the SRAMRR shows enhanced group delay, flat top, shape factor and out-band suppression.

Abstract:Considering the requirement of monochromaticity and tunability for resonator used in on-chip optical interconnect source,we design and make a tunable silicon reflection cavity mirror based on microring resonator,using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology and silicon material on insulating substrate.The performance of the reflection cavity is analyzed by the transfer-matrix method,and we find that the reflection cavity shows good properties in sharpness and extinction ratio.The experimental results show that the reflectivity of the reflection cavity can reach 90％ at the wavelength of 1549 nm,the quality factor is 3 × 104,and the free spectral range (FSR) is 9.6 nm.By applying the thermo-optic modulation to the microring resonator,the wavelength tunability in FSR can be realized within the power range of 0-40.5 mW.
Angular characters of enhanced resonance in an active microcavity embedded in dielectric Bragg reflectors

Abstract:Microcavity structures are widely utilized as resonators in many optoelectronic devices to improve their optical performance. We present an analytic approach to study the angle-dependent properties in active microcavities with dielectric Bragg reflectors. Based on the hard mirror (HM) model and paraxial propagation approximation, the angle dependent resonance properties can be expressed analytically in virtue of the cavity parameters and incident angle. Making use of these expressions, we found both the position of the active layer and the configuration of dielectric Bragg mirrors contribute to the angular characteristics of resonance in the active microcavity. The varying trend of the standing wave effect, intracavity electrical field and the degradation of quantum efficiency due to different incident angle are discussed in detail. It's found that there exists an optimal cavity configuration where the enhanced intracavity resonance can keep high value within a broader incidence range. Then further performance optimization of the whole devices can be performed.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate continuously tunable optical time delay and advance using coupling-modulated microring resonators (CMR) with a 15-mu m radius. By modulating the coupling coefficient through thermo-optical effect based on micro-heater, the coupling state of the microring is flexibly controlled; as a result, a large dynamic time tuning range (from time advance to delay) is achieved. The CMR device based on SOI is fabricated with commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. A novel micro-heater structure was firstly used to thermally tune the coupling state of the micoring. Pulse delay and advance from -15 ps to 85 ps is experimentally realized.

Abstract:We report our latest experimental and numerical work on silicon microresonator passive and electro-optic active devices. On the passive device front, we demonstrate an electrically tunable silicon microring notch filter for converting 3.6-Gbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data format to return-to-zero (RZ)-like data format. We show that the converted RZ-like data quality highly depends on the notch filter extinction ratios. On the active device front, we demonstrate a silicon microring modulator using a double-coupled U-bend waveguide as a feedback and a pair of laterally integrated injection-type p-i-n diodes for bias/signal modulation. We show that the microring modulator extinction ratios are electrically controlled by applying a DC-bias across either the feedback-waveguide or the microring while applying a modulation signal across the other p-i-n diode. We also propose silicon microdisk modulators with selectively integrated depletion-type Schottky diodes. Our numerical simulations suggest that the microdisk structures can be advantageous compared with microring structures. We show that electrical rise time on the order of a few ps is feasible using microdisks. We also allude to on-going work on extending the microresonator devices discussed here to building functional silicon optoelectronics integrated circuits.

Abstract:Compact all-pass and add-drop microring resonators (radius=10 μm) integrated with grating couplers working at 2 μm wavelength are designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial 340-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator platform. They are suitable for high-volume integrated optical circuits at 2 μm wavelength as the fabrication process involved are uncomplicated and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-process compatible, thus making them more convenient to be utilized. The performance of the grating couplers, based on four most important parameters, has been simulated and optimized. The simulation and experimental results of grating couplers show the lowest coupling loss of 4.5 dB and 6.5 Db, respectively. By utilizing the grating couplers to couple light in and out from the chip, the designed microring resonators have been tested. The experimental results of microring resonators show that an extinction ratio of 12 dB and a quality factor of 11,200 can be achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is thus far the smallest microring resonator ever demonstrated at this wavelength.

Abstract:We theoretically study the group-delay characteris- tics of a silicon microring resonator based on the coupled mode theory, and experimentally demonstrate error-free operations of an on-chip delay line using a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) microring resonator with a 20- m radius. Four signals of different modula- tionformatsareexaminedat5Gb/s,includingreturn-to-zero(RZ), carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ), return-to-zero duobi- nary (RZ-DB), and return-to-zero alternate-mark-inversion (RZ- AMI). Bit error rate (BER) measurements show that the maximal delaytimeswitherror-freeoperationsare80,95,110,and65ps,re- spectively,correspondingtoafractionalgroupdelayof 0.4, 0.5, 0.55, and 0.35. The differences in delay and signal degrada- tionshavebeeninvestigatedbasedonthesignalspectraandpattern dependences.Althoughthedelaysaredemonstratedinasinglering resonator, the analysis is applicable in slow-light resonance struc- tures such as all-pass filters (APF) and coupled resonator optical waveguides (CROW).

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the enhancement in the filtering quality (Q) factor of an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) by embedding it in an integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity formed by cascaded Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs). By utilizing coherent interference within the FP cavity to reshape the transmission spectrum of the MRR, both the Q factor and the extinction ratio (ER) can be significantly improved. The device is theoretically analyzed, and practically fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. Experimental results show that up to 11-times improvement in Q factor, together with an 8-dB increase in ER, can be achieved via our proposed method. The impact of varying structural parameters on the device performance is also investigated and verified by the measured spectra of the fabricated devices with different structural parameters.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate resonance-splitting and enhanced notch as a result of the mutual mode coupling in silicon ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions, wavelength multicasting and optical up-converter are demonstrated in the split silicon ring resonator. A temporal differentiator and format conversion from NRZ to AMI are demonstrated utilizing the filtering effect of ring resonator. Photonic phase shifter and delay line are demonstrated utilizing the phase shift of ring resonator.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a subwavelength hole defect assisted microring resonator (SHDAMR) structure. With the manipulated modal coupling between two degenerate counterpropagating modes induced by a subwavelength hole defect embedded in the microring waveguide, the SHDAMR structure shows a rectangular resonance lineshape instead of the Lorentzian resonance lineshape of a conventional microring. As a proof of concept, the SHDAMR structure is fabricated on the Si3N4 waveguide platform, for achieving a rectangular filter with a 3-dB bandwidth of 2.03 GHz and an improved shape factor. The demonstrated SHDAMR structure shows the advantages of compact footprint, simplified tunability, and large tolerance of fabrication errors, showing great potential for various applications.

Abstract:A photonic-assisted microwave signal generator based on a silicon microring modulator is demonstrated. The microring cavity incorporates an embedded PN junction that enables a microwave signal to modulate the lightwave circling inside. The DC component of the modulated light is trapped in the cavity, while the high-order sideband components are able to exit the cavity and then generate microwave signals at new frequencies in a photodetector. In our proof-of-concept experiment, a 10 GHz microwave signal is converted to a 20 GHz signal in the optical domain with an electrical harmonic suppression ratio of 22 dB. An analytic model is also established to explain the operation mechanism, which agrees well with the measured data. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Compact microring resonator devices are realized by using a small SU-8 polymer strip waveguide that has an SU-8 polymer core (n ~ 1.573), an SiO2 buffer (n ~ 1.445), and an air cladding. Due to the high index contrast of the optical waveguide, a small bending radius ( ~ 150 mum) is used for the MRR. To enhance the coupling between the access optical waveguides and the microring, 2 times 2 multimode interference couplers are used. The measured spectral response of the through port shows a high extinction ratio of over 15 dB and a 3-dB bandwidth of about 0.38 nm (corresponding to a moderate Q-value of ~ 4500).

Abstract:For a complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) etched on one screen of two infinite and perfectly conducting plates under cylindrical plane wave illumination, the transmission coefficients analysis were performed through finite-difference time-domain simulations. For the single slot ring CSRR, two transmission dips are observed for the direction parallel to aperture at resonance whereas two enhanced transmission for the direction normal to the aperture. For double slot ring CSRR, the transmission coefficients appear more anisotropic. The results provided considerable insight into the electromagnetic response of CSRR and would be very helpful for developing new electronic devices such as filters.

Abstract:We systematically investigate the optical effects and the optical functions of coupling-modulated microring resonators (CMR) based on interleaved p-n junctions. The optical effect of coupling-induced frequency shifts (CIFS) is firstly observed experimentally. Due to the CIFS and thermal-optical effect, the resonance spacing is tuned as large as 0.182 nm (corresponding to 22.8 GHz), the extinction ratio is continuously modulated between 0 dB to as large as 35 dB.

Abstract:An integrated dual-ring ratio-metric wavelength monitor (DR-RMWM) with ultra-high wavelength resolution and compact size is demonstrated. Two microrings are used as the edge filters and designed to achieve an "X-type" spectral response in a particular wavelength range. It is fabricated with the CMOS-compatible fabrication process on the silicon-on-insulator. The measured wavelength resolution is 5 pm in a 1.2 nm wide wavelength range. By tuning the resonant wavelength thermally, the functional wavelength range can be shifted. The DR-RMWM can find applications in wavelength monitoring systems, especially the on-chip systems.

Abstract:In terms of the coupled mode theory, novel formulas of the transfer functions are presented for a microring resonator array, which consists of multiple series-cascaded filter elements, and each of them contains double parallel-cascaded identical microrings. By using these formulas, we can analyze transmission characteristics for such a polymer device. Simulated results show that when some parameters are selected properly, the box-like spectral response can be formed, which is flat and steep, and the sidelobes and the cross talk can be dropped efficiently. The effects of manufacturing tolerances on the transmittance are discussed, which result in the shift of the transmission spectrum of the device. Abstract:In terms of the coupled mode theory, novel formulations of the transfer functions are presented for a series-cascaded microring resonator (MRR) array. Using these formulas, transmission characteristics are analyzed and some parameters are optimised for such a polymer device. Simulation results show that when several microrings are serially cascaded to form a MRR array, the passband becomes steep, and the nonresonant light and the crosstalk become weak.

Abstract:The demultiplexing function of microring resonant wavelength multiplexer(MRRWM) is realized by the frequency-selected function of microring resonator,which select the desired wavelength from different output channels transmission characteristics.Because of configuration particularities of the type of microrinmgs,more rigorous designation and analysis is essential for MRRWM despite its basis on MRR.In this paper,appropriate parameter optimization are present for the polymer microring resonant wavelength multiplexer(MRRWM) with 1×8 channels based on silicon,which include refraction index profile,waveguide sizes,resonance order,the thickness of the coupling layer,and so on.By this means,not only mode birefraction is eliminated theoretically,but also the means of reducing fabrication difficulty for the device is given.
