Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an 100 Gbit/s hybrid optical fiber-wireless link by employing photonic heterodyning up-conversion of optical 12.5 Gbaud polarization multiplexed 16-QAM baseband signal with two free running lasers. Abstract:We present a simple architecture for realizing high capacity W-band (75-110 GHz) photonics-wireless system. 42.13 Gbit/s 16QAM-OFDM optical baseband signal is obtained in a seamless 15 GHz spectral bandwidth by using an optical frequency comb generator, resulting in a spectral efficiency of 2.808 bits/s/Hz. Transparent photonic heterodyne up-conversion based on two free-running lasers is employed to synthesize the W-band wireless signal. In the experiment, we program an improved DSP receiver and successfully demonstrate photonics-wireless transmission of 8.9 Gbit/s, 26.7 Gbit/s and 42.13 Gbit/s 16QAM-OOFDM W-band signals, with achieved bit-error-rate (BER) performance below the forward error correction (FEC) limit.

Abstract:In this letter, we present a scalable high-speed W-band (75-110-GHz) fiber wireless communication system. By using an optical frequency comb generator, three-channel 8.3-Gb/s/ch optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OOFDM) baseband signals in a 15-GHz bandwidth are seamlessly translated from the optical to the wireless domain. The W-band wireless carrier is generated from heterodyne mixing the OOFDM baseband signal with a free-running laser. A W-band electronic down-converter and a digital signal processing-based receiver are used. Three-channel QPSK-OFDM W-band wireless signals are transmitted over 0.5- and 2-m air distance with and without 22.8-km single-mode fiber, respectively, with achieved performance below the forward error correction limit.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate THz photonic wireless communication systems with 16-QAM modulation in the 375-450 GHz band. The overall throughput reaches as high as 80 Gbit/s by exploiting four THz channels with 5 Gbaud 16-QAM baseband modulation per channel. We create a coherent optical frequency comb (OFC) for photonic generation of multiple THz carriers based on photo-mixing in a uni-travelling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD). The OFC configuration also allows us to generate reconfigurable THz carriers with low phase noise. The multiple-channel THz radiation is received by using a Schottky mixer based electrical receiver after 0.5 m free-space wireless propagation. 2-channel (40 Gbit/s) and 4-channel (80 Gbit/s) THz photonic wireless links with 16-QAM modulation are reported in this paper, and the bit error rate (BER) performance for all channels in both cases is below the hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8e-3 with 7% overhead. In addition, we also successfully demonstrate hybrid photonic wireless transmission of 40 Gbit/s 16-QAM signal at carrier frequencies of 400 GHz and 425 GHz over 30 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) between the optical baseband signal transmitter and the THz wireless transmitter with negligible induced power penalty.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic up-converted 25 Gbit/s fiber-wireless quadrature phase shift-keying (QPSK) data transmission link at the W-band (75-110 GHz). By launching two free-running lasers spaced at 87.5 GHz into a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at the central office, a W-band radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal is generated and distributed to the remote antenna unit (RAU). One laser carries 12.5 Gbaud optical baseband QPSK data, and the other acts as a carrier frequency generating laser. The two signals are heterodyne mixed at a photodetector in the RAU, and the baseband QPSK signal is transparently up-converted to the W-band. After the wireless transmission, the received signal is first down-converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) at 13.5 GHz at an electrical balanced mixer before being sampled and converted to the digital domain. A digital-signal-processing (DSP)-based receiver is employed for offline digital down-conversion and signal demodulation. We successfully demonstrate a 25 Gbit/s QPSK wireless data transmission link over a 22.8 km SSMF plus up to 2.13 m air distance with a bit-error-rate performance below the 2 × 10-3 forward error correction (FEC) limit. The proposed system may have the potential for the integration of the in-building wireless networks with the fiber access networks, e.g., fiber-to-the-building (FTTB).

Abstract:Recently, remarkable efforts have been made in developing wireless communication systems at ultrahigh data rates, with radio frequency (RF) carriers in the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) and/or in the terahertz (THz, >300 GHz) bands. Converged technologies combining both the electronics and the photonics show great potential to provide feasible solutions with superior performance compared to conventional RF technologies. However, technical challenges remain to be overcome in order to support high data rates with considerably feasible wireless distances for practical applications, particularly in the THz region. In this work, we present an experimental demonstration of a single-channel THz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system operating at 350 GHz, achieving beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate over a 10-km fiber plus a >20-m wireless link, without using any THz amplifiers. This achievement is enabled by using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal with a probabilistic-shaped 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation format, a pair of highly directive Cassegrain antennas, and advanced digital signal processing techniques. This work pushes the THz RoF technology one step closer to ultrahigh-speed indoor wireless applications and serves as an essential segment of the converged fiber-wireless access networks in the beyond 5G era.

Abstract:To accommodate the demand of exponentially increased global wireless data traffic, the prospective data rates for wireless communication in the market place will soon reach 100 Gb/s and beyond. In the lab environment, wireless transmission throughput has been elevated to the level of over 100 Gb/s attributed to the development of photonic-assisted millimeter wave and terahertz (THz) technologies. However, most of recent demonstrations with over 100 Gb/s data rates are based on spatial or frequency division multiplexing techniques, resulting in increased system's complexity and energy consumption. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a single channel 0.4 THz photonic-wireless link achieving a net data rate of beyond 100 Gb/s by using a single pair of THz emitter and receiver, without employing any spatial/frequency division multiplexing techniques. The high throughput up to 106 Gb/s within a single THz channel is enabled by combining spectrally efficient modulation format, ultrabroadband THz transceiver and advanced digital signal processing routine. Besides that, our demonstration from system-wide implementation viewpoint also features high transmission stability, and hence shows its great potential to not only decrease the system's complexity, butalsomeet the requirements of prospective data rates for bandwidth-hungryshort-range wireless applications.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the feasibility of a simple multigigabit-per-second (Gbps) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing multilevel orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal modulation at 60 GHz and a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this paper, the impact of fiber chromatic dispersion and OFDM beat noise on the performance of the RoF system are investigated by theoretical analysis, VPI WDM-TransmissionMaker simulation and experimental demonstration. A 13.875-Gb/s QPSK OFDM signal occupying the full 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz with frequency multiplication for the RoF link is demonstrated. After 3 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission with no dispersion compensation, the power penalty is less than 3 dB.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex bi-directional transmission optical wireless-over fiber integration system at W-band with the speed up to 15 Gb/s for both 95.4 GHz link and 88.6 GHz link for the first time. After 2 m wireless delivery and (20+20) km SMF-28 transmission, the BER for 15 Gb/s bi-directional links is below the FEC threshold when the OSNR is above 13.8 dB in the link of 95.4 GHz and 15.8 dB in the link of 88.6 GHz.

Abstract:Record 35-Gb/s wireless signal transmission is experimentally demonstrated using a Radio-over-Fiber system employing the single-carrier modulation format and 32-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The total occupied spectrum of the transmitted 60 GHz signal was 7-GHz, representing a spectral efficiency of 5 b/s/Hz. A decision feedback equalizer (DFE) was utilized to compensate for the signal distortion caused by fiber dispersion and self-inter-symbol interference. After transmission over 25-km single-mode fiber and 3 m wireless distance, the power penalty was less than 1dB.

Abstract:Higher capacity wireless access networks are required to serve the growing demands for mobile traffic and multimedia services. The use of sub-THz carrier frequencies is a potential solution for the increased data demands. This paper proposes and demonstrates experimentally the photonic generation of a multiband signal for sub-THz wireless-over-fiber transmission at up to 100 Gbit/s (20 Gbit/s in each band) using the full spectrum 220- 280 GHz for downlink wireless transmission and an uplink with 10 Gbit/s on-off keying. By using an optical frequency comb generator (OFCG), five optical tones spaced by 15 GHz are selected and split into odd and even optical subcarriers modulated separately using 10 Gbaud quadrature phase shift keying with Nyquist bandwidth achieved by using root raised cosine filtering with 0.01 roll off factor. These optical subcarriers are combined and transmitted over 10 km of fiber to the remote antenna unit (RAU). The optical bands are then filtered and transmitted separately at the RAU in a wireless channel. The received sub-THz band is down-converted to the intermediate frequency and digital signal processing (DSP) is employed at the receiver to measure the bit error ratio (BER). The performance is also evaluated to investigate the impact of the uplink on the downlink optical transmission. The receiver link budget and wireless distance for acceptable BER are also explored. The proposed system aims to distribute sub-band THz signals for short range indoor mobile units. The overall transmission capacity is increased by transmitting it as a multiband, which also reduces the bandwidth requirements on opto-electronic devices.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber‐wireless integration system at W‐band (75–100 GHz), and 80‐Gbps polarization division multiplexing 16‐ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal is transmitted in an optical‐wireless‐optical system for the first time. After 50‐km single‐mode fiber‐28 (single‐mode fiber (SMF)‐28) transmission, the millimeter‐wave signal at 84‐GHz is delivered over a 4‐m 2 × 2 multiple‐input multiple‐output wireless link, and finally up‐converted to optical signal for another 50‐km SMF‐28 transmission. With the optical signal‐to‐noise ratio of 30 dB, the bit error rate is below the forward‐error‐correction threshold of 3.8 × 10−3 using cascaded multimodulus algorithm equalization at the receiver. The experimental results indicate that high‐order QAM signal can be well suitable for long‐haul large‐capacity optical‐wireless‐optical transmission in the proposed system. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 60-GHz bidirectional radio-over-fiber system with downstream orthogonal frequency division multiplexing address (OFDMA) and wavelength reuse upstream single-carrier frequency division multiple address (SC-FDMA). In the downstream, a 3-dB optical coupler is used for two-carrier injection-locking a distributed feedback (DFB) laser in order to realize the single-sideband modulation. In the upstream, the weakly modulated one of the two downstream carriers is filtered out for wavelength reuse. Transmission of 9.65-Gb/s 16-QAM downstream OFDMA on 60-GHz carrier and 5-Gb/s QPSK upstream SC-FDMA (2.5 Gb/s for each user) are both successfully demonstrated over 53-km standard single mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation. The crosstalk between the downstream OFDMA and the upstream SC-FDMA can be neglected.

Abstract:This study extended the transmission distance of a 100-GHz DD-OFDM-RoF system through the reduction of chromatic dispersion-induced phase noise. The implementation of a pilot-aided phase noise suppression (PPNS) scheme enabled the transmission of distance-insensitive 16.97-Gbps QPSK OFDM over 0~150-km fiber and 2-m air transmission via a DFB laser with linewidth of 1~10-MHz. We applied a bit-loading algorithm in conjunction with PPNS to maximize spectral efficiency, resulting in a 93% improvement in the data rate from 11.53 to 22.27 Gbps at a fiber transmission of 150 km.

Abstract:We experimentally realized a 320-GHz 320-Gbps/λ terahertz (THz) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system based on a photonics-aided scheme with the help of polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) technology and multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. In this system, the low-complexity MIMO single-carrier frequency-domain equalizer (SCFDE) is implemented to compensate for the polarization-related impairments of the PDM signal, and the demultiplexing performances between SCFDE and the commonly used constant modulus algorithm (CMA) are also compared in this proposed system. After 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and 3-m 2 × 2 MIMO wireless link transmission, the bit error rate (BER) of the received 46-GBaud PDM 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal satisfies the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold with 15% overhead, which corresponds to a record-breaking net bit rate of 320 Gbit/s.
