Abstract:This paper demonstrates the feasibility of a simple multigigabit-per-second (Gbps) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing multilevel orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal modulation at 60 GHz and a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this paper, the impact of fiber chromatic dispersion and OFDM beat noise on the performance of the RoF system are investigated by theoretical analysis, VPI WDM-TransmissionMaker simulation and experimental demonstration. A 13.875-Gb/s QPSK OFDM signal occupying the full 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz with frequency multiplication for the RoF link is demonstrated. After 3 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission with no dispersion compensation, the power penalty is less than 3 dB.

Abstract:In this letter, we present a scalable high-speed W-band (75-110-GHz) fiber wireless communication system. By using an optical frequency comb generator, three-channel 8.3-Gb/s/ch optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OOFDM) baseband signals in a 15-GHz bandwidth are seamlessly translated from the optical to the wireless domain. The W-band wireless carrier is generated from heterodyne mixing the OOFDM baseband signal with a free-running laser. A W-band electronic down-converter and a digital signal processing-based receiver are used. Three-channel QPSK-OFDM W-band wireless signals are transmitted over 0.5- and 2-m air distance with and without 22.8-km single-mode fiber, respectively, with achieved performance below the forward error correction limit.

In this system, a Fabry-Perot (FP) frequency interleaver is designated to suppress optical carriers for 60GHz signal generation. Abstract:This work describes a proposed 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing a frequency sextupling optical up-conversion scheme. Based on the modified single sideband modulation scheme, spectrally efficient vector signals were transmitted with no performance degradation due to dispersion-induced fading. Wavelength-division- multiplexed optical up-conversion can be realized using the proposed system. Since the required transmitter bandwidth is significantly reduced, radio-frequency components with lower bandwidth and higher reliability can be utilized. Both 13.75-Gb/s QPSK-OFDM and 20.625-Gb/s 8QAM-OFDM signals were experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25-km of standard single mode fiber, no significant received power penalty was observed.

Abstract:The increasing demand for wireless video-based interactive and multimedia data services explains why 60-GHz millimeter-wave wireless system is a promising candidate to provide multi-gigabit-per-second wireless services. While attempting to generate and transmit 60 GHz signals in a wireless system cost effectively and increase the spectral efficiency to facilitate multi-gigabit-per-second services, this work reviews three radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on optical frequency multiplication (up to 6 times) to reduce the bandwidth requirement of optical transmitters. Additionally, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with multi-level modulation formats (16 QAM) are utilized to achieve an ultrahigh data rate of 28 Gbps within the 7-GHz license-free band and compensate for an uneven frequency response of 60-GHz RoF systems. Negligible power penalty following 25-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission is observed, capable of significantly extending the service range to various applications within a building or campus.

Abstract:This study proposes a full duplex 60-GHz band radio-over-fiber (RoF) link using a modified tandem single sideband (TSSB) modulation scheme with frequency doubling. Based on the modified TSSB modulation scheme, no dispersion induced fading is observed; high spectral efficiency vector signal can be utilized; and wavelength reuse can also be achieved. Both single carrier 8-QAM and QPSK-OFDM signals for down-link transmissions are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission of 50-km SSMF, no significant receiver power penalties are observed. Wavelength reuses with 1.25-Gb/s OOK using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) for up-link transmission are also demonstrated. After transmission of 50-km SSMF, no significant receiver power penalties are also observed.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 60-GHz bidirectional radio-over-fiber system with downstream orthogonal frequency division multiplexing address (OFDMA) and wavelength reuse upstream single-carrier frequency division multiple address (SC-FDMA). In the downstream, a 3-dB optical coupler is used for two-carrier injection-locking a distributed feedback (DFB) laser in order to realize the single-sideband modulation. In the upstream, the weakly modulated one of the two downstream carriers is filtered out for wavelength reuse. Transmission of 9.65-Gb/s 16-QAM downstream OFDMA on 60-GHz carrier and 5-Gb/s QPSK upstream SC-FDMA (2.5 Gb/s for each user) are both successfully demonstrated over 53-km standard single mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation. The crosstalk between the downstream OFDMA and the upstream SC-FDMA can be neglected.

Abstract:In this paper, we have proposed a novel scheme of the radio-over-fiber (ROF) link carrying two 10Gbit/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) electrical millimeter (mm) wave signal streams. Since the 40GHz dual-tone optical carrier is generated by frequency quadrupling via a LiNbO3 modulator and the two 10Gbit/s QAM signal streams are modulated on each tone by single sideband (SSB) modulation with a 10GHz local oscillator, the frequency requirement of the radio frequency (RF) local oscillators and the optical modulators is reduced to 10GHz. Because the mm-wave signals in the photocurrent are generated by beating the two second-order sidebands, the 40GHz optical mm-wave signal has great resistance to the fiber chromatic dispersion. Moreover, the ROF link with the optical mm-wave carrier carrying two 16-QAM 10Gbit/s data streams has higher spectrum efficiency. To verify our proposed scheme, a ROF simulation link with two 10Gbit/s 16-QAM SSB optical mm-wave signals is built. The simulation results, including the constellation diagrams, the eye diagrams and the error vector magnitudes (EVMs), show that the transmitted signals keep good performance even after 39km fiber transmission.

Abstract:A full-duplex radio over fiber link scheme with 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) 10 Gb/s downstream and 2.5 Gb/s upstream signals is proposed. In the downlink, the 60 GHz dual-tone optical millimeter-(mm-) wave signal carrier is generated by the 15 GHz local oscillator via a Mach-Zehnder modulator with frequency quadrupling. The 16-QAM 5 GHz IF signal is up-converted to 65 GHz by modulating it on one of the two tones with single-sideband (SSB) modulation at the central station. At the remote base station, the 65 GHz SSB optical mm-wave signal is detected by a high-speed photodiode. After the 60 GHz uplink dual-tone optical mm-wave carrier is abstracted by optimized filtering, the uplink 63 GHz mm-wave signal is modulated onto it to down-convert to the 3 GHz SSB optical IF signal. Since both the down- and uplink optical mm-wave signals have SSB spectra with the signal modulated on one of the two tones, they suffer little from the fiber dispersion. The simulation results show that the bidirectional signals have good performance even after being transmitted over 30 km standard single mode fiber.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated the transmission performance of orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals in a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber system over up to 100-km standard single-mode fiber employing an adaptive bit-loading algorithm. Considering dispersion-induced phase noise, the maximum capacities after different fiber distances are investigated with and without a phase noise suppression (PNS) algorithm for the first time. When a distributed-feedback (DFB) laser with the linewidth of 1.3 similar to 4.1 MHz is modulated to carry the radio signals, the PN will result in more than 21.5% capacity decrease after 100-km fiber and 3-m wireless link, and the PNS algorithm which needs no bandwidth-consuming pilot tones can accomplish more than 15.3% capacity increase.
