Abstract:The functional corticomuscular coupling (FCMC) between the cortex and the contralateral muscle can reflect and assess the motor function in sensorimotor system. Considering the inherently highly nonlinear and directional biological systems, the transfer entropy (TE) technique was applied to quantitatively analyze the functional connection between electroencephalogram (EEG) and surface electromyogram (EMG), while EEG over the scalp and EMG from flexor digitorum surerficialis / extensor digitorum were recorded simultaneously during performing grip task with steady-state force in nine stroke patients and nine healthy controls. The results showed that the interaction strength on stroke-affected hand was weaker in comparison with that on the unaffected hand and healthy controls. There, however, were no significant differences between two directions for stroke patients, while the FCMC in descending pathway was dominant at high beta-band (25–35Hz) than that in ascending direction for healthy controls. These differences might derive from the structural lesion which may disorder the function of oscillation, coordination, feedback and transmission between the efferent control and the afferent feedback. This study suggests that the FCMC between the brain and the contralateral muscle in interaction strength and information flow can be estimated by the TE method.
