Abstract:Herein, a facile in situ sulfation strategy was employed for modifying Cu/TiO2 catalysts using CuSO4 as the precursor to enhance the performance of dichloromethane (DCM) catalytic combustion. The experimental results revealed that the modified samples exhibited superior DCM conversion and COx yield compared to the pristine Cu/TiO2 catalyst. Among these, the 1CuSO(4)/TiO2 sample showed the best activity with near 90% conversion during 50 h of reaction at 275 degrees C. Characterization results showed that the in situ sulfation modification could considerably improve the catalyst acidity, benefiting the dissociative adsorption of DCM with C-Cl rupture. Notably, the surface sulfate groups provided abundant Bronsted acidic sites that release surface Cl species in the form of HCl at relatively low temperatures, preventing the surface Cu species from chloride poisoning. With excess CuSO4 addition, the intermediates derived from DCM dechlorination could not be decomposed in time due to the decreased reducibility, leading to their deactivation due to coke deposition. The superior performance of 1CuSO(4)/TiO2 is attributed to the balance achieved between acidity and redox capacity for DCM catalytic decomposition. Moreover, it was found that CuSO4/TiO2 could partially replace noble-metal Ru/TiO2 catalysts and achieve comparable performances. The findings of this study will aid the development of CVOCs catalytic combustion catalysts with good activity and stability.

Abstract:In this work, modified Ru/Ti catalysts with support sulfation by the introduction of solid superacid Ti(SO4)(2) were employed for the catalytic combustion of dichloromethane (DCM). The experimental results showed that the optimal Ru/TiS0.05 sample yielded a near 100% DCM conversion at 275 degrees C, which was almost 30% higher than that of the pristine Ru/Ti catalyst. After a series of sample characterizations, it was found that there existed strong interactions between Ru species and sulfated TiO2 support, which would improve the dispersion of Ru species, thereby generating more active sites for DCM deep oxidation. Furthermore, the enhanced acidity derived from sulfation modification would facilitate DCM dissociation, and the generation of Bronsted acidic sites improved HCl selectivity. As such, both the enhancements in acidity and Ru dispersion after sulfation modification resulted in its superior performance of DCM catalytic abatement. Moreover, excessive Ti(SO4)(2) addition would lead to the blockage of the pore structure and significantly decrease in the reducibility of the catalyst, leading to the loss of the activity.

Abstract:The MgAlFe mixed oxides derived from hydrotalcite-like compounds was impregnated with copper and tested for SO2 removal under conditions similar to those of FCC units. By XRD, TG-DTG, BET and IR analysis, the sulfur transfer catalysts with 0.5–3.0% copper exhibited a better dispersion of copper in the precursor. The results of SO2 adsorption–reduction test showed that the novel Cu/MgAlFe catalysts with 0.5–5.0% copper oxide achieved high oxidative adsorption rate and sulfur absorptive capacity, and did not affect the rate of reductive reaction and reducibility.
Rational Design of a Novel Core-Shell Cu-ZSM-5@Ru/S-1 Tandem Catalyst for the Catalytic Combustion of Dichloromethane

Abstract:To achieve a well synergistic effect between dissociative adsorption and deep oxidation during the dichloromethane (DCM) catalytic combustion process, a novel tandem catalyst, Cu-ZSM-5@Ru/S-1, was developed by rationally designing the catalyst structure. Activity experiments revealed that the Cu-ZSM-5@Ru/S-1 catalyst achieved a DCM conversion and mineralization rate of over 90% under a 5% H2O atmosphere at 290 degrees C with a low Ru loading of 0.2 wt %. The mineralization rate of the Cu-ZSM-5@Ru/S-1 was approximately 78% higher than that of the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst, and the activity was approximately 55% higher than that of the Ru/ HZSM-5 catalyst. Furthermore, the in situ characterizations and simulation results indicated that the DCM catalytic reaction followed a tandem reaction mechanism. The initial dissociative adsorption and conversion of DCM primarily occurred in internal Cu-ZSM-5 active sites, and the deep oxidation of the intermediates was subsequently achieved on the Ru/S-1 shell. The two steps mentioned above acted synergistically to enhance both DCM dechlorination and deep oxidation. In addition, the PCDD/F emission of Cu-ZSM-5@Ru/S-1 catalyst at 350 and 400 degrees C met the national standard for municipal solid waste incineration (0.1 ng I-TEQ Nm-3). Overall, this study provides new strategies for developing highly active and cost-effective catalysts for CVOC catalytic combustion.

Abstract:Cu/Ti-MCM-41, Cu/Ti-HMS mesoporous molecular sieves have been successfully synthesizd by hydrothermal synthesis. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and BET techniques. The results show that the molecular sieve has the favourable crystal structure and Ti is located in framework of the molecular sieve, Cu element in the form of oxide CuO exists in molecular sieves, which makes the distribution of molecular sieve surface channel diameter more concentrated. Cu/Ti-MCM-41 and Cu/Ti-HMS were used as heterogeneous catalyst for the oxidative desulfurization reaction with H2O2as oxidant, the experimental results show that the complexing coordinate adsorption of the CuO π bond can effectively improve the desulfurization performance of Cu/Ti-MCM-41 and Cu/Ti-HMS and the desulfurization rate can reach 92.8% and 88.5%, respectively. After regeneration, the desulfurization rate of molecular sieves decreases, and both the CuO leaching and molecular sieve structure collapse are the cause of the decrease of sulfur removal by using Cu/Ti-MCM-41, Cu/Ti-HMS as catalysts.
In-situ One-Pot Synthesis of Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 Catalysts with Highly Efficient NH3-SCR Catalytic Performance as Well as Superior H2O/SO2 Tolerability

Abstract:Series of Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts with variable Ti content were prepared via convenient in-situ one-pot synthesizing strategy. Systematic evaluations of the NH 3 -SCR catalytic performance over the obtained catalysts were conducted. Results show that Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 with appropriate Ti content (in the current work Ti 0.81 /Cu 2.15 -SSZ-13) could serve as capable candidate for NH 3 -SCR application, as it exhibits highly efficient catalytic activity with expanded operation temperature window width from 140 to 540 °C, nearly 100% N 2 selectivity, as well as superior tolerability against water vapor and SO 2 . Further structural/physicochemical characterizations demonstrate that the obtained Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts possess well-crystallized characteristic chabazite (CHA) structure. Isolated Cu 2+ and monomeric Ti 4+ are recognized as the primary active species, as the former mainly contributes to SCR reaction at low temperatures, while the latter are conducive for improving the high temperature SCR activity. Ti over doping would result in partial destruction of the zeolite structure, occupation of Cu 2+ cation sites and formation of surface aggregated TiO x , thus leading to unsatisfactory NH 3 -SCR performances. Moreover, formation of agglomerated CuO x species during hydrothermal ageing and blockage of surface active sites by sulfate species formed during SO 2 pretreatment are considered responsible for activity deterioration in the tolerability tests.

Abstract:Catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low temperatures is still an urgent issue to be solved. Herein, low-temperature combustion of toluene over Cu-doped SmMn2O5 mullite catalysts via creating highly active Cu2+-O-Mn4+ sites has been originally demonstrated. Cu-doped SmMn2O5 mullite catalysts exhibited 90% conversion of toluene at 206 degrees C and displayed robust stability even in the presence of water. It has been demonstrated that Cu doping created Cu2+-O-Mn4+ active composite sites that were more exposed after removing surface Sm species via acid-etching. Benefiting from this, the redox and oxygen activation ability of catalysts was significantly enhanced. The consumption of benzaldehyde and benzoic acid as intermediate species and the CO2 generation ability were apparently promoted, which were the direct reasons for the enhanced low-temperature combustion of toluene. This work provides novel ideas for the development of high-performance catalysts for low-temperature VOC combustion, which has great industrial application prospects.
A Facile and Controllable in Situ Sulfation Strategy for CuCeZr Catalyst for NH3-SCR

Abstract:The Cu-based transition-metal-oxide catalysts were widely applied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR), but limited in practical application because of the inferior catalytic performance at high temperatures. To counter this issue, we designed a facile in situ strategy to obtain sulfated CuCeZr catalysts, on which the sulfation degree could be precisely controlled without any further post-treatment. The sulfated CuCeZr catalysts not only show broader SCR reaction temperature window and promoted N-2 selectivity, but also demonstrate satisfactory tolerance to H2O and SO2. The outcomes indicate that stronger surface acidity, weaker reducibility and excellent stability for adsorbing NH3 on the sulfated CuCeZr catalysts greatly suppress the undesired excessive oxidation of NH3 at high temperatures, which enhance the high-temperature activity and N-2 selectivity. Furthermore, the transient in situ DRIFT and steady-state kinetic studies reveal that both unsulfated and sulfated catalysts mainly follow the Eley-Rideal mechanism.
Surface In Situ Doping Modification over Mn 2 O 3 for Toluene and Propene Catalytic Oxidation: The Effect of Isolated Cu δ+ Insertion into the Mezzanine of Surface MnO 2 Cladding

Abstract:Heterocation insertion and substitution in tunnels and mezzanines of MnO2 present significant influences on the microchemical environment at the surfaces and interfaces. An innovative surface in situ doping modification method via Cu2+-H+/KMnO4 treatment was applied onto the Mn2O3 surface to provide Mn2O3@MnO2 nanospheres. Cu was stabilized into resulting MnO2 cladding substituting original K+ during a mild comproportionation reaction between Mn(VII) and Mn(III). The Cu25 (Cu(II): Mn(VII)atomic = 25%) catalyst shows significant promotion of the catalytic performance compared with bare Mn2O3 and Cu0 (without Cu involving). Isolated Cuδ+ was predominantly inserted into the mezzanine of the [MnO6]δ- layers in MnO2 instead of K+, leading to slight electron transfer from Cuδ+ to outermost Mn(4-ε)+ and a decrease of interlayer spacing as well as crystallinity. Such a configuration facilitates the formation of additional oxygen vacancies, promoting the redox ability and oxygen mobility at relatively low temperatures. The mechanistic study reveals that Cuδ+ in MnO2 cladding boosts the activation of toluene (methyl) to form benzoates and propene (methyl and double bonds) to form carboxylates, enhancing the chemical adsorption of reactants. Moreover, it also inhibits the unfavored accumulation of incomplete oxidized intermediates on the surface at high temperatures.

Abstract:Supported metal catalysts play a pivotal role in the production of fuels and chemicals and environmental remediation. However, identification and tailoring of the active metal sites on these catalysts still remain a formidable challenge, primarily due to their dynamic nature in catalytic reactions. Here, we report a simple and effective strategy for tuning supported Cu nanoparticles via controllable in situ surface restructuring to form coordinatively more unsaturated Cu sites, which exhibit a 4-fold increase in catalytic turnover rate and high stability, as probed by the ethanol dehydrogenation reaction. In situ measurements by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal intense phase transformation and consequent dynamic restructuring of Cu nanoparticles, induced by oxidation with temporarily added nitrous oxide and subsequent reduction under reaction conditions. Such restructuring is precisely controlled at the Cu surfaces without altering Cu dispersion, oxidation state, etc., enabling us to unambiguously identify the active sites during catalysis. This strategy, an alternative to many sophisticated synthesis methods, has been shown to be effective for engineering different Cu catalysts and in turn markedly enhancing their catalytic activity for a wide range of reactions varying from alcohol dehydrogenation to methanol steam reforming.
One-Step Synthesis of Nanostructured Cu–Mn/TiO 2 via Flame Spray Pyrolysis: Application to Catalytic Combustion of CO and CH 4

Abstract:Catalytic combustion has been widely applied to remove the trace combustible pollutants. However, the earth-abundant and high-performance nanocatalysts are still the main research focus on promoting catalytic efficiency. Herein, the Cu and Mn mixed oxides supported on TiO2 nanoparticles with various Cu and Mn molar contents synthesized via the flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) technique are utilized in the catalytic oxidation of lean CO and CH4. Initially, the Cu–Mn/TiO2 nanocatalysts are composed of spherical structures with a diameter of about 20 nm, whose specific surface area is between 60 and 90 m2/g. The Cu element is more evenly distributed on the TiO2 surface than the Mn element, owing to the distinctly different ion radii. Both the copper and manganese cations could incorporate into the TiO2 lattice, which generates oxygen vacancies and enhances the diffusion of oxygen ions, causing the transformation of the antanse to rutile phase. When the molar content of the Cu–Mn increases to less than 30 mol %, the temperature of its reduction peak keeps decreasing due to the hydrogen spillover effect. Moreover, the catalytic performances of the Cu–Mn/TiO2 with 12 mol % loading (12CMT) are all optimal during the low-temperature and the high-temperature stages, which are superior to the FSP-made copper manganese or copper titanium oxides. This is attributed to the small crystal particles, highly dispersed active components of CuOx and MnOx, and the higher ratios of Cu1+/Cu and Mn4+–Oads Lewis acid–base pairs. In addition, the strong interaction between Cu–Mn components and rutile phase support can tremendously promote the activity of catalytic combustion. Under the simulated flue gas, the catalytic properties of 12CMT decreases in comparison with those of CO and CH4 mixed gas due to the introduction of CO2. Ultimately, the Cu–Mn/TiO2 samples exhibit the outstanding water resistance, thanks to the hydrophobization of the catalyst surface.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A series of flower-like CuxMnyCez mixed oxides catalysts for soot removal were prepared via a facile co-precipitation approach followed by calcination. The structural and surface properties of these catalysts were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, oxygen temperature-programmed desorption and NO temperature-programmed oxidation. Superior soot oxidation performance was obtained over these ternary mixed oxides catalysts and the corresponding mechanism was explored. In particular, the Cu1Mn1Ce1 catalyst showed a remarkable improvement in soot oxidation activity in both NO + O-2 and O-2 atmospheres. The reusability and durability of these catalysts were assessed, and these materials showed high soot oxidation activity after the hydrothermal stability test.

Abstract:A novel CFCl2CF2Cl(R113)/H2 gas treatment process was proposed and successfully applied for the redispersion of a sintered alloy PdCu/AC catalyst. The redispersion process was initiated by the formation of an oxidative PdCuClx intermediate, which can easily migrate to a nearby catalyst surface and then be reduced to smaller PdCu NPs.
Oxidation–Reduction Treatment Initiated in Situ Redispersion of the Supported Cu/Al2O3 Catalyst

Abstract:Achieving a high dispersion of the supported catalyst is crucial for heterogeneous catalysts. However, such a goal is difficult to attain for copper-based catalysts with conventional preparation methods, especially at higher yet industrial-related loadings. In this study, we explore an oxidation–reduction treatment for in situ reconstruction of supported copper catalysts, promoting the redispersion of large Cu nanoparticles. Oxidation of the reduced Cu/Al2O3 catalyst turns large Cu nanoparticles into a hollow structure, which is attributed to the Kirkendall effect. The following reduction step produces reduced Cu nanoparticles with smaller diameters and an increased number of active sites. Such an oxidation–reduction treatment results in a remarkable two-fold increase in the activity of the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst, as compared to the untreated one, toward the methanol steam reforming reaction. Our findings present an innovative approach for the in situ improvement of the catalyst dispersion, holding great promise for heterogeneous catalytic applications.
Effect of Titania Polymorph on the Properties of Cuo/Tio2 Catalysts for Trace Methane Combustion

Abstract:Anatase and rutile have the same chemical composition as TiO2 but different crystalline structures and surface structures, which draws effect on the properties of their supported catalysts. Additionally, titania mixture, e.g., Degussa P25, which consists of both anatase and rutile, presents different physicochemical properties with anatase and rutile. In this work, P25-, anatase- or rutile-supported copper oxide catalysts (signed as CuO/P25, CuO/A and CuO/R) were prepared and characterized to study the titania support effect on the physicochemical properties and catalytic properties for the trace CH4 combustion. It is found that the activity of CuO/R is better than the corresponding CuO/A sample when their pore size and specific surface area are comparable, which is attributed to the different chemical states of the copper oxide caused by the different TiO2 support polymorphs. The loading of CuO and subsequent calcination promotes more significant sintering and anatase to rutile transform for CuO/P25 than those for CuO/A. Thus, CuO/R shows better stability than CuO/P25. Abstract:The catalytic performance and the promotional mechanism of sulfation for selective catalytic reduction of NO by CH4 over sulfated titanium-loaded In (In/STi) were investigated. An enhancement of catalytic activity was obtained over the In/STi catalysts. Sulfation influenced the existent state of surface indium species and determined the activation species of CH4. Py-IR analysis showed that the sulfated In/STi catalyst had strong Brønsted acid sites, which were beneficial to the formation of active InO+ species. DRIFTS studies further revealed the distinguish reaction intermediates of CH4-SCR of NO over the sulfated and unsulfated catalysts. On the In/TiO2 and TiO2 catalysts, the activation species of CH4 was the fully oxidized products of CO2 and H2O, while on the STi and In/STi catalysts, HCOO-, the real reluctant for CH4-SCR of NO, was detected as the main intermediate species. In addition, the formation of HCOO- was the rate-determining step in CH4-SCR of NO on the In/STi catalyst.
Constructing surface oxygen defects at CuO–Co3O4 interface to boost toluene oxidation over CuO/Co3O4 catalysts

Abstract:As a typical heterogeneous catalytic process, the catalytic combustion of toluene over Co3O4-based catalysts is strongly depends on the surface properties of catalysts, especially the concentration of surface oxygen defects. Here, a novel way was proposed to construct chemically bonded CuO-Co3O4 interface by chemical deposition of CuO onto Co3O4 nanoflowers. The interfacial refinement effect between CuO and Co3O4 support disrupted the ordered atomic arrangement and created countless unsaturated coordination sites at CuO-Co3O4 interface, inducing a significant generation of surface oxygen defects. Surface-rich oxygen vacancies enhanced the capacity of 20%CuO/Co3O4-R to adsorb and activate oxygen species. Benefiting from this, 90 % toluene conversion was reached at 228 °C over 20%CuO/Co3O4-R, which was much lower than that over 20%CuO/Co3O4-S prepared by impregnation method and CuO/Co3O4-mix obtained by mechanically mixing way. In-situ DRIFTS analysis revealed that toluene could be directly decomposed into benzaldehyde at the highly defective CuO-Co3O4 interface, leading to toluene oxidation following the path of toluene → benzaldehyde → benzoate → maleic anhydride → water and carbon dioxide over 20%CuO/Co3O4-R, which was significantly different from decomposition mechanism over 20%CuO/Co3O4-S. Additionally, 20%CuO/Co3O4-R displayed terrific recyclability and outstanding stability, showing good application potential.

Abstract:There emerges an urgent stipulation towards the enhanced toluene catalytic combustion nanocatalysts for whittling down the footprint of toluene, a notorious air pollutant. Unfortunately, Few materials which are currently made accessible both present the high catalytic performance lower than 250 °C and keep durable at elevated temperatures. Herein, we demonstrate an expeditious salt hydrolysis-driven redox-precipitation protocol wherein H+ donated by the hydrolysis of copper salt was used to initiate the regioselective reduction of KMnO4 by H2O2 under controlled redox kinetics in order to assemble the homogeneous mixed solid solution hollow microsphere Cu-Mn-based structure. Manifold characterization technologies unveil that in this unique nanbomicrosphere the abundant microscaled pores are successfully created across Cu-Mn bulks with fine-modulating the chemical properties. In sharp contrast with the compact counterparts without tailed porosity, the tuned crystallinity, accessed edge sites with the unsaturated coordination, fast redox chemistry, and boosted gaseous diffusion during reactions synergize to result in the signally good toluene oxidation, with the complete elimination activity at 252 °C, T90 at 237 °C, and prominent long-term durability under the stringent reaction atmospheres. Our current study ushers in an alternative and tractable arena to excogitate the porous oxide materials for multifarious catalysis implementations.
